What You Need to Know About the Sneakiest New Online Tracking Tool

What do the White House and YouPorn have in common? Their websites both use canvas fingerprinting, a newer form of online tracking designed to make it hard to hide. ProPublica investigated the pervasive shadowing method, developed as an insidious alternative to cookies so websites can keep tabs on where their visitors browse online.

How Do Airline Pilots Respond After A Crash?

by Paul Thompson on flightclub, shared by Robert Sorokanich to Gizmodo

How Do Airline Pilots Respond After A Crash?

After the tragic crash of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 on Thursday, and amid the wall-to-wall news coverage, I began to wonder about something we don't typically see on the news — How do these incidents affect pilots? I reached out to my pilot friend, Mike to find out.

Cosmologists Show Negative Mass Could Exist In Our Universe

by Unknown Lamer
KentuckyFC (1144503) writes The idea of negative mass has fascinated scientists since it was first used in the 16th century to explain why metals gain weight when they are oxidized. Since then, theoretical physicists have shown how it could be used to create exotic objects such as wormholes and the Alcubierre warp drive. But cosmologists' attempts to include negative matter in any reasonable model of the cosmos have always run into trouble because negative mass violates the energy conditions required to make realistic universes with Einstein's theory of general relativity. Now a pair of cosmologists have round a way round this. By treating negative mass as a perfect fluid rather than a solid point-like object, they've shown that negative mass does not violate the energy conditions as had been thought and so must be allowed in our universe. That has important consequences. If positive and negative mass particles were created in the early universe, they would form a kind of plasma that absorbs gravitational waves. Having built a number of gravitational wave observatories that have to see a single gravitational wave, astronomers might soon need to explain the absence of observations. Negative mass would then come in extremely handy.

Yikes, these animal hybrids are so hilariously terrifying

Don't be surprised if in the future crazy scientists will have tampered with genetics so much that they'll create insane animal hybrid mashups. And not just designer dogs but psycho frigs, horsquirrels, eagluanas and chinchillapotamuses. They'll probably look a lot like these excellent photoshopped animals.

UK sculptor Robin Wight creates dramatic scenes of wind-blown fairies clutching dandelions, clinging to trees, and seemingly suspended in midair, all with densely wrapped forms of stainless steel wire. The artist currently has several pieces on view at the Trentham Gardens and sells a number of DIY wire sculpting kits from his website where he also discusses in great detail how each piece is built. Mt. Fuji Volcano In 'Critical State' After Quakes

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader writes: Mount Fuji, in addition to being a picturesque landmark and an important part of Japanese culture, is also an active volcano. Its last eruption was just over 400 years ago, but its location — where the Eurasian, Pacific, and Philippine tectonic plates meet — mean it will always have potential for eruption. A new study (PDF) has examined the pressures around Mount Fuji in the wake of several recent earthquakes, including the magnitude 9 tremor that unleashed the destructive tsunami in 2011. The researchers now say the volcano is in a "critical state." According to the study's lead author, "The volcanic regions are the ones where the fluids trapped in the rock – boiling water, gas, liquid magma, which cause an eruption when they rise to the surface – exert the greatest pressure. The seismic waves add to this pressure, causing even more disturbance." They have no way of predicting when an eruption might happen, but the potential seems greater than ever.

Sony Forgets To Pay For Domain, Hilarity Ensues

by samzenpus
First time accepted submitter Dragoness Eclectic writes Early Tuesday, gamers woke up to find out that they couldn't log in to any Sony Online Entertainment games--no Everquest, no Planetside 2, none of them. Oddly, the forums where company reps might have posted some explanation weren't reachable, either. A bit of journalistic investigation by EQ2Wire came across the explanation: SOE forgot to renew the domain registration on SonyOnline.net, the hidden domain that holds all their nameservers. After 7 weeks of non-payment post-expiration, NetworkSolutions reclaimed the domain, sending all access to Sony's games into an internet black hole. Sony has since paid up. SOE's president, John Smedley, has admitted that the expiration notices were being sent to an "unread email" address.

Why Tesla's Model 3 Could Be the Most Important Electric Car Ever

Tesla's next electric car officially has a name: The Model 3 . It seems like an all-around average sedan, no crazy up-swinging falcon doors or other outlandishness. Even the $35,000 price is pedestrian. It's also what could make it as important to automotive history as the Model T.

Norway's Turning Power Plant Emissions Into Fish Oil

by Sarah Zhang

Norway's Turning Power Plant Emissions Into Fish Oil

With millions of tons of carbon dioxide billowing into the atmosphere from our power plants, one possible solution to the pollution is carbon capture—sequestering the greenhouse gas before it ever leaves the plant. But then what do you do with all that carbon? Norway has a interesting new plan: farm salmon.

New ALICE COOPER Guitarist NITA STRAUSS: 'Nobody Tells Me I'm Not Good Because I'm A Girl'

Revolver magazine asked THE IRON MAIDENS guitarist Nita Strauss, who recently joined Alice Cooper's touring band, for her opinion on where women stand in the music industry and metal. "I read about a lot of female musicians and read interviews and they have all these horror stories," she said. "And really, when you look at someone like Lita Ford or Joan Jett, they did have it a lot harder than we do now. They were the ones that blazed the trail for us." She continued: "I can't remember the last time someone said to me, 'You're pretty good for a girl.' People just don't say that anymore. I've also spent a lot of time making sure that my chops are where they need to be so nobody can say that. Nobody tells me I'm not good because I'm a girl, because they don't see me going out there and not playing well. "I'm always interested in other girls' responses, too. Sure, you'll still have people that still have the outdated stereotype that girls can't play guitar, but you look at Jennifer Batten and there's so many incredible female players out there like Courtney Cox and Orianthi. People who have this idea that girls can't play guitar just need to do a little bit of homework. "It's not like you're going to ask your doctor, 'What's it like being a female doctor?' or 'What's it like being a female auto mechanic?' It might be mostly guys but there are girls that excel in every field, whether it's playing guitar, writing about metal or being a proctologist. Actually, I'm sure most guys would rather have a female proctologist." Asked how much she practices or plays guitar a day, Nita said: "It really depends on what I'm doing. There's not a day that goes by where I don't play for a while. For instance, this [Alice Cooper] tour I treat like a normal job. I get up in the morning and have my coffee and then I sit down and play guitar for six to eight hours. Sometimes I actually have to stop myself from playing because my hands will get fatigued if I play for more than a certain amount of hours. I stop at 10 at night and say, 'OK, I can't play again until tomorrow,' so I will be able to play the next day. "I think the most important thing is to just keep your hands in shape. A lot of guitar players will go for weeks without playing and I think that's like if you're a runner and you go a couple weeks without doing any cardio. You just want to keep your chops up."
