Voz dos Alienados 64

by André

Jose Antonio DE Oliveira Oliveira
jaoliverrah@bol.com.br

satanás, eu te ordeno! Sai do André!

1. Nunca houve escravos no Egito.

Mentira?

http://ceticismo.net/category/religiao/islamismo-religiao-ceticismo/

Kerby Rosanes Transforms Moleskin Notebooks Into Explosions Of Dragons And Doodles [Art]

by Lauren Davis
kerbyrosanes.deviantart.com

Kerby Rosanes is a doodler in the best sense of the word. His notebooks and sketchbooks burst with swords, lizards, tendrils, clouds, squid, airships and homunculi—a bizarre mashup of the natural and the surreal, the adorable and the macabre. And while the pieces tend to be similar in style, each one comes with its own surprises.

If you like Rosanes’ work, head over to his Tumblr and deviantART gallery, where you can see them at higher resolutions. He also sells his inky designs through Society6.

Burger King Japan’s newest hamburger is a black ninja with a bacon tongue

by Gwynn Guilford
 Burger King Japan

The global success of McDonald’s shows that, like politics, fast food is local. Though that often involves little more than slapping a “Mc” on the local favorite—e.g. McSpicy Paneer in India, McMollete in Mexico, Le Croque McDo in France—that seemingly foolproof formula helped it keep growing through the global downturn (pdf, p.11).

Burger King is one-upping McD’s, though, as reported by RocketNews 24. Instead of bastardizing national foodstuffs, Burger King is going a step further. With the rollout of Kuro Ninja (“Black Ninja”) (pdf), BK Japan is burger-ifying a national icon (complete with an inexplicabe protruding tongue):

 Burger King Japan

How does a fast food chain fashion a ninja out of a burger? First, naturally, by blackening the bun. This is achieved not by leaving the toaster on too long, but by coloring the dough with bamboo charcoal. BK’s approximation of a ninja tongue is a long slab of bacon flopping lewdly out of the burger (again, we’re baffled by the idea that long tongues are typical of ninjas.) The rest is a hash brown patty and the regular fixings, topped off with Chaliapin sauce (named after a Russian opera singer), as RocketNews24 explains. As of October 25, Kuro Ninja can be had for ¥680 ($6.93).

This may be part of BK’s “commitment to menu innovation,” which management emphasized in its Q2 earnings call. The company seems intent on grabbing market share from the far more popular McDonald’s. BK added 20 stores in Japan in 2012, bringing the total to 64.

That commitment probably explains why Kuro Ninja isn’t a totally new invention. If its sire was the Kuro Burger—a ebony-bunned Whopper slathered in “Black Flavored Ketchup” (ketchup plus garlic and squid ink)—the dam appears to have been Big Bacon Whopper (that’s where the “tongue” originated). BK Japan’s menu of out-there items also includes its “Garlic Meat Beast” and Double Garlic Cheese line, BK RiNGO, a beef hamburger dressed with cinnamon-dashed apple chunks, and the fried pumpkin, bacon, beef and mixed-nut sauce melange that was BK Pumpkin.

But given how frequently it’s been rolling out wacky new sandwich concepts, BK Japan might have a problem with taking innovation too far. This time? Well, you be the judge.

BEFORE THEY PASS AWAY

"in 2009, i planned to become a guest of 31 secluded and visually unique tribes. i wanted to witness their time honoured traditions, join in their rituals and discover how the rest of the world is threatening to change their way of life forever. most importantly, i wanted to create an ambitious aesthetic photographic document that would stand the test of time, a body of work that would be an irreplaceable ethnographic record of a fast disappearing world. i didn’t start this project anticipating that i could stop the world from changing. i purely wanted to create a visual document that reminds us and generations to come of how beautiful the human world once was." - jimmy nelson

the tribes seen here (in only ten of the over 500 photos found in his book) are: (1) the peoples of the vanuatu islands, found southeast of the solomon islands; (2) the samburu of northern kenya; (3) the maori of new zealand; (4) the kalam of eastern new guinea; (5) the huli of the new guinea highlands; (6) the maasai, who live in kenya and tanzania; (7) the karo, who live on the eastern banks of ethiopia’s omo river; (8) the himba of the kunene region of northern namibia; (9) the kazakhs of western mongolia; (10) the yali of the baliem valley region of papua indonesia.

Architects of Air Luminarium - Levity III

Amococo Luminarium, Pier Approach, Bournemouth, Dorset

The idea of designing inflatable environments to display the beauty of light and color started with a structure called “Eggopolis” — a project built in 1990 that led to the creation of the Architects of Air (AoA) company. Today, AoA staff have designed and constructed six luminariums, or walk-in mazes of domes and tunnels. The plastic monuments have been featured in hundreds of events and are currently taking tours through locations worldwide.

Ornamental (wood & metal) turning in late 18th century France was an art form most associated with the upper ranks of society and particularly the royal court. Publishing a how-to manual on turning under your own name in the 1790s against the backdrop of the French Revolution wouldn't have been the most sensible of life choices because the author's association with the hated aristocracy would be printed in black and white for all to see.

So the true author of The Turner's Manual - 'Manuel du Tourneur' - (the eminent lawyer, Louis Georges Isaac Salivet) decided against using his own name on the title pages of the first two volumes when they were released in 1792 and 1796, respectively (together making up the 1st edition).

Instead, Salivet employed two allonyms (like pseudonyms, but real people), Louis-Eloy Bergeron and his son-in-law, Pierre Hamelin-Bergeron, with whom Salivet was said to be at least acquainted, if not actual friends. There is no record as to whether or not the substitutes agreed to their names being used in this way. Citations online are divided between authors Salivet and Bergeron, but the latter probably dominates.

Salivet (or perhaps one of the Bergerons) was said to have owned a Paris firm "that sold rose engines, tools, lathes and materials for turning. This seminal work contains numerous engravings of various objects and patterns from which to model both turning equipment and turned objects." [source]

There appears to be only occasional commentary available online with respect to the technical qualities of the volumes. There are sparse references to its having merit in the first half of the 19th century both because it was an assiduous chronicle of continental development in the field of lathe-work and turning, and because there was no comparable literature available at the time in England (in fact, I don't think Salivet's Manual was fully translated** until just a few years ago). The 'Manuel du Tourneur' was specifically aimed at the amateur craftsman with the machines, models and techniques outlined relating to woodworking (most) and metalwork, with modest primers on glass engraving and ivory work.

A musical instrument journal article - predominantly a translation of text - about the flute and related instrument machining (illustration plate seen above) found inconsistencies in some of Salivet's descriptions and measurements. They conclude he wasn't a flautist himself, but very probably had obtained descriptions from (a) Parisian flute-maker(s), and he didn't have the background to adjust the information for context.

The revised 2nd edition of 'Manuel du Tourneur' (1816) was enlarged to include an atlas volume containing engravings by Nicolas Louis Rousseau from drawings by Gallet. The earlier edition had a smaller series of illustrations after designs by Louis-Jacques Goussier (known for his technical drawing contributions to Diderot's 'L'Encyclopédie' and illustration redesigns for 'Les Anatomies' by Vesalius). The atlas contains more than seventy regular and hand-coloured engravings in total.

**Just prior to posting this entry I found details about the 2010 translation of the Bergeron/Salivet 'Manuel du Tourneur' into English, and the following quote is found here (it's only mentioned at a couple of sites, both listed among the bullet points down below):
"The Society of Ornamental Turners has released in hardback a translation of Bergeron's 'Manual du Tourneur'. Volumes I and II are text only and contain no plates; the third volume often (called the 'Atlas') contains all the Plates referred to in Volumes I and II. Editor Jeremy Soulsby has translated the previously un-translated 239 pages as well as extensively revising the style and content of the earlier works so as to clarify obscure terminology and techniques. He has fully indexed the volume and provided a glossary and extended notes.
As described from the SOT website: 'First published during the turbulent times of the French Revolution, Bergeron's Manuel du Tourneur or The Turner's Manual has been admired for over two hundred years as a comprehensive record of all the tools, machinery and techniques required by an eighteenth century amateur wishing to establish a fully equipped workshop for the hobby of turning. This, the second volume of text which uses the 1816 revised and expanded second edition by P. Hamelin-Bergeron, is available for the first time in an English translation. It deals with the more elaborate elements of the subject and gives instruction in the use of the complex lathes of the period which were used to make many of the artefacts now to be seen in museums'."

Crafting scenes of iconic Americana

by Ameya Pendse

Like photographs pulled from an old shoebox in a dusty attic, Michael Paul Smith’s photostream is filled with images echoing warm memories of mid-twentieth century America. Many who view his photos of vintage cars and familiar buildings are often hit with nostalgia. That feeling, however, quickly leads to bewilderment upon learning the truth: Michael’s pictures aren’t real!

“When I tell people my photos are actually models — just little cars on a table that I’ve recreated — they’re shocked,” Michael tells The Weekly Flickr in the accompanying video. “It’s a great moment. I really do love it!”

Motivated by a fascination with the mid-twentieth century era and a desire to catalog the past, Michael set out to build and photograph fictional, miniaturized scenes from the 1950s.

North Main Street - Elgin Park [circa 1930's ]

First Warm Day in Early Spring - 1933

“The ’50s and ’60s had a sense of hope about them,” Michael says. “Television had come in, new cars came out every year and everyone avidly looked at science fiction hoping to get a glimpse of what the future was going to be like. The future was tangible, and it just made it worth while getting up in the morning to see what was going to come down the pipe next. It was an amazing time.”

As a kid, Michael was an avid model car collector. He’s started out building cheap model cars and later advanced to diecasts and truck models. Over time, he became aware of how cars changed; this evolution fascinated him and piqued his interest even further.

Teen Idol Slips into Town

Giant Head oversees accident

“As I began collecting cars, I became curious to see where it all came from,” Michael recalls. “It was mainly from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. And after awhile, I could identify the things that changed. So I started collecting as many tangible objects as I could from the past – wallpaper, linoleum and rugs – mainly as a keepsake. When my collection got so large, I started making models and setting them up as realistic as possible. Photography naturally started to come in when I wanted to document everything. And that’s how it all started!”

Today, Michael’s model car collection consists of over 300 cars — most of them prominently displayed in Elgin Park, the fictitious town he created for his series.

Velma Kelley's 1955 Studebaker SPEEDSTER

Pontiac for 1951!

The town consists of a dozen or so scale model buildings, which Michael mixes and matches to create many different sets. He carefully inserts his model cars into specific scenes and photographs them against outdoor backdrops in and around his hometown of Winchester, Massachusetts.

“The process of creating a photo is interesting,” Michael says. “I like to mix the old with the new and sort of juxtapose everything. For example, I’ll have a ‘57 Mercury and set it up against a carwash model I created. Honestly, it’s just kind of playing. It’s creative play.”

Elgin Park has everything: a train station, a supermarket, even a movie theater. One thing, however, it does not have are people — an intentional move on Michael’s part.

1958 Packard Hawk Glamor Shot

Packard Hawk Photo Setup

“From the very beginning, I decided that there will be no people in Elgin Park,” Michael explains. “I felt that having people interfere in the photograph, and the rest of the scene sort of disappears. I didn’t want that. Now, viewers can get involved in the photograph itself.”

And viewers have gotten involved — millions in fact! They’ve made Elgin Park into a tourist destination, attracting over 20 million views, all via cyberspace, since January 2010. A number, even today, Michael still can’t believe.

Color vs Black and White

“For a long time, I never showed my photographs to anyone,” Michael says. “I just thought people wouldn’t get it. Seemed kinda quirky to me, you know? Here’s a grown man with little model cars and buildings that he’s creating. But after a couple years, stuff was just languishing on my computer. It was brought to my attention that Flickr existed, and so I posted them, and within a couple months, there were about one million hits. It’s unreal.”

The reactions have also been overwhelming. Many of them citing nostalgic memories of “coming home” and “good times.” Michael received touching messages from viewers saying they started crying while looking at his photos — all of them happy tears.

East Main Street-1951

Slide 2 Vacation at the Lake

“There was a doctor who contacted me who said he showed my photographs to Alzheimer’s patients,” Michael says. “And what they did, much to his surprise, was it started a dialogue between the patient and the doctor. These images would trigger an emotion or a memory, and it was one of the first times these people were coherent. So I’m clearly touching very deep nerves and cords, and that was not my original intent.”

“Overall, this entire process thrills me, and it fills my heart,” Michael admits. “It just fills my heart to put this out there for everyone, and they enjoy it.”

Visit Michael’s photostream to see more of his photography.

As part of an absurdly clever advertising campaign orchestrated by ad agency M&C Saatchi Milano for insurance firms Europ Assistance IT and Genertel, a giant submarine was installed near the city center as if it had suddenly burst through the street. The carefully orchestrated stunt which unfolded on October 1st was complete with a live reenactment meant to reinforce the idea of safeguarding yourself and posessions against unforseen events.
