Alton Brown Shows How to ‘Perfectly’ Barbecue a Steak by Removing the Grill and Cooking Directly on the Coals
Food expert Alton Brown demonstrates his trick for cooking the “perfect” steak that involves taking the grill off the barbecue and placing the meat — in this case, skirt steak — directly on top of the charcoal.
Yes, some of the charcoal is going to stick, no that’s not a problem. A little ash never hurt anybody, it’ll turn into a relish sauce.

Mother of Pearl Shell Skull Carvings by Gregory Halili

Born and raised in the Philippines, New Jersey-based artist Gregory Halili is deeply influenced by the vegetation and wildlife he experienced as a child. His latest series of work involves a fusion of the human form with the natural world in these amazing bas-relief shell skulls. Halili carves and then paints with oil on raw, gold-lip and black-lip mother of pearl found in shells collected from the Philippines. The pieces will soon be exhibited at Silverlens Galleries in Manila and Nancy Hoffman Gallery in NYC, but for now you can see much more in this Facebook gallery. (via Junk Culture, Skullspiration)

Scott Hove at Hashimoto Contemporary.
Opening this Saturday, May 31st and Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco, California is Scott Hove’s solo show, “Master of Rapacity.” Brand new, masterful taxidermy cake sculptures will be on full display to discuss the show’s theme which is the people pulling the strings behind the curtains. In Scott’s words: “America is currently undergoing a very decisive and quiet transition to corporate oligarchy, the government becoming more and more acquiescent to corporate policy. Corporate policy is by nature rapacious, and could not give a fuck about nature or your feelings. So, I wondered what kind of art might be in an oligarch’s house… and then I made those pieces. I was partly inspired by Mexican cartel boss aesthetics, late Roman empire decadence, and regular old Americana. This imaginary oligarch is the Master of Rapacity.” See more work from the show below:

Guy Makes Pyro Backpack, Shoots Flames Everywhere

Pyro from X-Men isn't one of the best known characters in the Marvel universe, but that doesn't mean his backpack mounted flamethrower isn't cool as all heck. And for our amusement, one tinkerer decided to bring it to life.
Watch inventor Colin Furze (the same guy who made retractable wolverine claws) takes on a nerdy tinkering challenge and sets stuff on fire in the process . Throw some space marine armor and that could also pass as a sweet Terran Firebat costume.
It should be noted that strapping a tank of propane to your back and having wrist-activated flamethrowers is probably incredibly dangerous and stupid, so whatever you do don't try this at home. Unless that is you're really, really cool and want to impress all your friends, in which case I'm not gonna narc on you, man. Here's how Colin did it:
You got my attention, Colin!

ISEE-3
Randy LaueHoly shit.
Back in early March, I posted comic #1337, Hack, about a wayward spacecraft. ISEE-3/ICE was returning to fly past Earth after many decades of wandering through space. It was still operational, and could potentially be sent on a new mission, but NASA no longer had the equipment to talk to it—and announced that reconstructing the equipment would be too difficult and expensive.
ISEE-3 is just a machine, but it’s a machine we sent on an incredible journey; to have it return home to find our door closed seemed sad to me. In my comic, I imagined a group of internet space enthusiasts banding together to find a way to take control of the probe—although I figured this was just a hopeful fantasy.
I wasn’t the only one who liked the idea of “rescuing” ISEE-3. In April, Dennis Wingo and Keith Cowing put up a crowdfunding project on RocketHub to try to learn how the lost communications systems worked, reconstruct working versions of them, obtain use of a powerful enough antenna, and commandeer the spacecraft. It seemed like an awfully long shot, but I contributed anyway.
Well, yesterday, Cowing and his team announced, from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico, that they are now in command of the ISEE-3 spacecraft.
Congratulations to the team, and good luck with your new spaceship! Watch out for hackers.

Nick Sheehy’s “Metamorphosis.”
Australian artist Nick Sheehy’s (Previously on Supersonic) debut solo show opens in London at Atomica Gallery on June 12th, 2014. Nick’s skeletal focused work is inhabited with flowing strokes of graphite and highlighted with instances of watercolor. The effect that this gives is that the work is in the process of changing, a theme which Sheehy pursues and puts on air within the show’s title, “Metamorphosis.” See more of his work below:
