Have you heard of the sooty owl? They are frightening and their eyes are probably hell portals.

i DID actually while i was looking up owls a while back oh MAN they have incredible faces, like some kinda confused ghost who ended up in a bird and now just has to live with it

image

looks like they come in lesser and greater sooty flavors, and theyre both pretty similar except for their sizes (about 43 cm for the greater, 37 for the lesser)

image

theyre like someone took a barn owl and just lowered the brightness, threw some speckles in there, made their eyes a direct portal to the infinite nightmarish abyss, called it a day

image

the YOUNG SOOTY OWLS on the other hand dont even look like real animals. they look like someone made a dodo out of felt and accidentally left it in a dryer. owls are great

In UK Study, Girls Best Boys At Making Computer Games

by timothy
New submitter Esteanil writes Researchers in the University of Sussex's Informatics department asked pupils at a secondary school to design and program their own computer game using a new visual programming language. The young people, aged 12-13, spent eight weeks developing their own 3D role-playing games. The girls in the classroom wrote more complex programs in their games than the boys and also learnt more about coding. The girls used seven different triggers – almost twice as many as the boys – and were much more successful at creating complex scripts with two or more parts and conditional clauses. Boys nearly always chose to trigger their scripts on when a character says something, which is the first and easiest trigger to learn.

Laverne Cox weighs in on Ferguson on The View

Laverne Cox uses her platform with such care and precision. I think we’re very fortunate that she has become a prominent figure in American public life.

Also sometimes I see her in interviews and think, “I once sang karaoke with her,” and feel the strangeness and wonder of life. (She is, predictably, as beautiful a karaoke singer as I am a terrible one.)

Pastafarian services advertised at German town limits

by Cory Doctorow

A reader writes, "In Germany, churches promote the times of their masses on signs at the town entrances. Now, for the first time, the 'Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster' in Templin/Germany was allowed to put sign there as well: 'Fridays, 10am: Noodle mass'." (more…)

Twitter Push Led to Five Figures' Worth of Donations to Ferguson's Public Library Today

by Megan Burbank

This isn't new information: one way to support Ferguson is to donate to the city's public library, which has provided all manner of community support, including maintaining normal hours and bringing in teachers and volunteers when the city's public schools closed. But since yesterday's grand jury decision, there's been a huge outpouring of public support for the library on Twitter.

It started with this tweet Buzzfeed's Ashley Ford:

ICYMI: @fergusonlibrary is open tomorrow, but school are not. We all know books save lives. Please donate: http://t.co/OPJTnOD7qg
— Ashley Ford (@iSmashFizzle) November 25, 2014

Then Roxane Gay weighed in:

I have to believe we are going to be better and do better by one another even if I cannot yet see how. If I don’t believe that, I, we, have nothing.

On Twitter last night, Ashley Ford shared that she donated to the Ferguson Public Library, which inspired me and many others to do the same. I hope you can donate, too. We have words and we can make sure the people of Ferguson have them too.

One of Ford's tweets was shared 266 times, and many famous (Neil Gaiman) and less-famous (Anne Helen Peterson) writers tweeted about donating to the library. By the end of the day, Ford reported that donations to Ferguson's public library had reached five figures.

This isn’t because Burger King is nicer in Denmark. It’s the law, and the US is actually the only so-called “developed” country that doesn’t mandate jobs provide a minimum amount of paid vacation, sick leave, or both.

kinda debunks that claim that they can’t afford to pay their workers those sort of wages and still make a profit

Uber's Android App Caught Reporting Data Back Without Permission

by timothy
Zothecula writes Security researcher GironSec has pulled Uber's Android app apart and discovered that it's sending a huge amount of personal data back to base – including your call logs, what apps you've got installed, whether your phone is vulnerable to certain malware, whether your phone is rooted, and your SMS and MMS logs, which it explicitly doesn't have permission to do. It's the latest in a series of big-time missteps for a company whose core business model is, frankly, illegal in most of its markets as well.
