Maybe I should learn to skateboard someday. I feel like I think about skateboarding more frequently than most.

I’m back from ConBravo and it was great! Met some fans, made some new fans and had some great chats. I even did a Webcomics panel with some other great webcomic artists! Great times!

I’ll see you next year, ConBravo!

Los soldaditos del yoga

by La Gusa

by noreply@blogger.com (David Piñeiro)

Scientists discover seaweed that tastes just like fried bacon

by Cat DiStasio

Scientists have discovered a new strain of seaweed that tastes like bacon. Not even kidding. The strain is a type of dulse, which is actually a common sea vegetable popular in Asian cooking because of its high protein content and umami flavor. Researchers at Oregon State University created a brand new strain that, when fried, doesn’t taste like seaweed at all. Instead, it takes on the coveted smoky deliciousness of a food many people just can’t quit. This bacon-mimicking seaweed is also twice as nutritious as kale (as if you needed a second reason to want some).

Amaro and Walden's Joyride

London’s hottest day of the year did not stop the familiar faces from heading down to central soho for the evening debut of Amaro and Walden’s Joyride.

Hosted by the talented creators The Line, the short went down a storm, no one left disappointed.

reapersun:

reminder series: bleak yet comforting thoughts.

i specifically chose animals that are (or believed to be) extinct due to human influence: thylacine, great auk, baiji, west african black rhino, golden toad, dodo, passenger pigeon, and quagga. there are many other species i could have included. the plants are also based on extinct species, but i found much less information about extinct plants, unfortunately.

the text doesn’t necessarily relate to each animal or their extinction. it’s all basically the same idea: let’s all be nice to each other, because today, the universe is vast and incomprehensible, we are all suffering, we are all going to die, and we’re all in this together. for today.

i’m busy for a couple weeks with conventions, but after that i’m considering a companion series with ancient extinct animals, so feel free to send me your favorites :)

Long-Exposure Photographs of a New Zealand Cave Illuminated by Glowing Worms

by Christopher Jobson

lumin-7

lumin-2

The twinkling lights dotting the ceiling of this dazzling cave system are the work of arachnocampa luminosa, a bioluminescent gnat larva (also called a glowworm) found throughout the island nation of New Zealand. It is believed that the light, emitted mostly from females, is how the insects find mates. These long-exposure photos by local photographer Joseph Michael capture small communities of worms amongst 30 million-year-old limestone formations on North Island. You can see more shots from the project titled Luminosity, here.

How Machine Vision Solved One of the Great Mysteries of 20th-Century Surrealist Art

The great Belgian surrealist Magritte painted two versions of one of his masterpieces, and nobody has been able to distinguish the original from the copy. Until now.

In 1983, a painting by the Belgian surrealist René Magritte came up for auction in New York. The artwork was painted in 1948 and depicts a bird of prey morphing into a leaf which is being eaten by a caterpillar–perhaps an expression of sorrow for the Second World War, which Magritte spent in occupied Belgium.
