#Euromaidan: Must-see photos and stories from the front lines

An amazing post on Livejournal from Ilya "Zyalt" Varlamov gives a glimpse of life behind the barricades at the #Euromaidan uprising in Kiev, Ukraine. Zyalt's photos and text convey the diversity of the rebel lines -- "from students to pensioners" -- and the ingenuity they display in everything from homebrewed catapaults to morale-boosting drumming ("When casual stone- and grenade-throwing takes place, the knock is monotonous, in order to set rhythm and keep the morale. When Berkut attacks, drumming becomes louder and everyone hears that – for some it is a signal to run away, for some, on the opposite – defend the barricades.") At the end, we see the moment when the smoke clears and the truce begins. This is nailbiting, engrossing, terrifying stuff.
Here's hoping that all our readers in Ukraine are safe, especially Daniel, who wrote our first post on #Euromaidan.
I would like to dispel the most common myths about Maidan.
1."They destroyed the whole city" Not true. All of the action you see in the pictures are happening on a small square near the entrance to a Dinamo stadium. This is a government sector, there is no intereference in peaceful life outside of this area. If you make an analogy with Moscow, imagine that the barricades are someone in the area of Ilinka or Varvarka, near the president's administration. Sure, it's the center, but regular Moscovites wouldn't notice. There is dark smoke and fire on all pictures: those are mostly burning tires. There is not tangible damage to the buildings. Unfortunately one store burned down last night near the barricades, resulted from a poorly thrown molotov cocktail. Even the statue of Lobanovsky, located in the epicenter of fighting has been covered with cloth to prevent damage. Overall, the protesters are very careful regarding property. They've take apart fences and benches, but no windows are broken, noone is vandalizing, and all looters are caught and beaten. So the picture is pretty apocalyptic, but things are not so bad.
2. "This is not a revolution, nothing horrible is happeneing"
Also not true. This is a real revolution. Decide for yourselves: it's been two months since the center of Kiev has been in the hands of the opposition. Several government buildings are seized. The work of many government offices is paralyzed. The opposition has created barricades, which the authorities have not be able to take. Despite the freezing temps, tens of thousands of people are on the streets for the last two months. The system of defense and supply chain are established. There is perfect order at the protestor HQ, people are fed, dressed, people are pooling money to gather supplies. The most important thing: the people in power are unable to restore order. The police has failed several times at try to storm the barricades. I'll make a separate post about this, but trust me, the only way to dismantle this is with heavy artillery, or drop in commandos. Every day the opposition is securing more territories. What is this if not a revolution?
3. "The entire Kiev is paralyzed, there is no peaceful life for the regular people."
Kiev is living its own life. All stores and cafes are working, people are going to work, study in universities, get married, divorce and even die their own death. Most of the Kiev populace are not inconvenienced. Imagine if Navalny took over the Red Square and set up his camp there. What would change for you, Moscovites? Nothing. So the only people who are inconvenienced are toruists. A few stores and cafes had to close down in the very center. Also, those living in the center have troubles with logistics. But the entire Kiev is not paralyzed.

Homemade English Muffins
daniprettoWHAT? i such at anything remotely close to baking.. but may need to try.
We've made bagels together before (a couple times, actually). But we've never enjoyed an english muffin together. Did you know that english muffins are even easier to make than bagels, or at least I think so.
My favorite thing about english muffins: egg + cheese sandwiches! It's like an Egg McMuffin but homemade. You can also just lightly toast them and top them with butter, jam or cream cheese + lox. Oh the possibilities! But first we have to make them.
English Muffins, *makes six. Adapted from The Bread Baker's Apprentice.
2 1/4 cups bread flour
1/2 tablespoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon shortening (or butter at room temperature)
1 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
3/4 cup milk
Combine the yeast with the warm water. I like to add just a pinch of sugar to the water before pouring in the yeast, just really get things going.
In a large mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Stir in the shortening, this will be a little clumpy and that's ok. Now pour in the yeast water and milk. Stir until a dough ball forms. If you are using a stand mixer and dough hook to knead the dough, this will take about 6 minutes until the dough becomes elastic like. If you knead by hand it will probably take 8-10 minutes (and a lot more muscles). Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and allow to rise until doubled in size (about 60-90 minutes).Plop the dough out on a floured work surface. Yes, you must plop. Divide the dough into six equal parts. *The orginal recipes encourages this, although I think this could easily make eight muffins as it yeilds pretty big english muffins if you stick with six.
Anyway, roll each muffin into a ball. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and a little bit of cornmeal (or flour). Cover, and allow to rise for an additional hour.Heat a cast iron skillet (or other oven safe pan) over medium heat. Add a teaspoon of oil. You don't want too much as our goal isn't to fry the dough, but we don't want it to stick to the pan either. Cook for 5-6 minutes on each side. You want each side to get very brown, but not burnt.
Once you've cooked each side pop the skillet in the oven at 400°F for 10-12 minutes until the english muffins are cooked through.
If you do not have an oven safe pan, or you don't have one large enough for all the muffins, you can remove the muffins after cooking on each side to the baking sheet (still lined with parchment paper and cornmeal) and bake on there. Either way. These are wonderful just out of the oven the day they are made. If you have leftovers, just place the cooled muffins in a Ziplock bag and seal it up. These will easily last a few days on the counter, or up to a week in the refrigerator. Make an Egg McMuffin for me! xo. Emma

High Speed Rail Line Proposed to Connect Texas and Mexico
daniprettoyeah because border control will ever let this one happen. totally a good idea. will also improve the drug trade.
High speed rail photo / Shutterstock
Texas and Mexico could soon have an improved connection across the Rio Grande with a new proposed high speed rail line. The line would connect San Antonio, Texas with Monterrey in northern Mexico as a way to reduce travel time between the two large metropolises. The high speed rail line would help improve trade, reduce travel time (and emissions!) and increase tourism to both regions.

Cheap, Biodegradable Sugar Batteries Could Power Gadgets Within Three Years
daniprettowe will see... we will see.
A research team from Virginia Tech led by Y.H. Percival Zhang just developed a battery that runs on natural sugar that could replace conventional batteries within three years. The sugar battery is cheap, refillable, and biodegradable, and it could be used to power cell phones, tablets, video games and other electronic gadgets in the future. “Sugar is a perfect energy storage compound in nature,” Zhang said. “So it’s only logical that we try to harness this natural power in an environmentally friendly way to produce a battery.”

Do Not Need: A 3-D Printed Replica Of Your Unborn Baby
daniprettoNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
3D Babies will print a replica of your unborn baby using the 3-D ultrasound from a doctor's visit (previously: these ones from Japan based on MRI scans). 3D Babies come in three sizes: a $200 mini, a $400 half-size, and a $600 full size (8-inch) version. They also come in three shades (light, medium and dark) and two poses: arms and legs crossed, or arms and legs flailing and penis staring right at you. Alternatively, just wait till the baby is born and take it to Sears Portrait Studio like a normal person. "That's not 3-D." YOU DON'T NEED 3-D.
Keep going for a size comparison and a shot of the two poses in case you though I was joking about the YEP, DEFINITELY A BOY.Alabama Family Tries To Burn Toilet Paper Out Of Tree After Getting TP'd, Burns House To Ashes
daniprettochez fail
The Crausewell family of Dora, Alabama, had their lawn and trees toilet papered over the weekend by neighborhood kids. So what did they do? Clean up the best they could and wait for the next rain to dissolve the remaining toilet paper? NOPE, they decided to burn the toilet paper out of the trees. A little bit of Alabama ingenuity as I like to call it (I lived there for 10 years and have experienced it firsthand -- including the time a neighbor wanted to build a bigger garage and decided to try to demo the one he had by driving his truck through the walls). ROLL TIDE. Just kidding, WAR EAGLE. Kidding again -- let's go Hokies!
[Cheryl Crausewell] said they lit a piece of toilet paper on the magnolia tree with a lighter in an attempt to remove it, but wind blew the piece into the yard, setting the grass ablaze. "It just popped out into a little patch and we tried to put it out and it just kept going, so I was trying to keep it from going down the front porch and came down the bank and around the back of the house," she said. Within seconds, Crausewell said the fire spread to the backyard where the propane gas tank from a grill may have added fuel to the fire. "I just realize life is really precious. I mean, you know that already but it just brings it home how precious life is and all these things really don't matter," Crausewell said.Heck yeah, there's nothing like burning your own house to the ground trying to set toilet paper on fire to realize just how precious life is. Reminds me of the time I realized how precious life is when I blasted myself off the shitter after dropping a match in there with a toilet bowl full of cleaning products. You ever tasted a towel bar before? Every time I swallow. Thanks to lilco, who agrees getting somebody to burn their own house down definitely ranks up there with the best pranks of all time.

Designer Bicycles from Martone Cycling Co.
daniprettocute but those baskets are so useless. my purse never stays in them.
Designer Lorenzo Martone began a lifelong obsession with bicycles when he received his very first one at Christmas in 1985. Thanks to Santa, that day was permanently etched into his brain and so was the love of his first bike he called “Fina” (Portuguese for skinny). 28 years later, Martone Cycling Co. was born as a fashion and design driven bike company with city bikes that make a bold statement.
The first collection has been released, each with a signature red chain and basket – one style, available in a men’s or women’s frame, and each comes in five colors: red, gold, white, silver, and black.
The bike isn’t all about looks, though. Each bike is powered by their innovate duomatic gear system which adjusts automatically and changes gears based on the speed you’re cruising at.

12 photos that reveal why Target Canada is in big trouble
daniprettothat post did not have to be nearly as long. 2-3 photos would have sufficed.
Target opened more than 100 stores in Canada last year.
But the discount chain’s expansion up north has been a bumpy one. Company executives admitted that inventory didn’t sell as quickly as they expected, which hurt profits.
Wall Street analyst Brian Sozzi at Belus Capital Advisors recently published photos of Target Canada that indicate why the business could be struggling.
Related
His images portray understocked shelves and disorganized displays.
Take this freezer, which is looks understocked and empty:
“Look at the dominant clearance signs on the cheap chic items Target is known for in the U.S.,” Sozzi writes.
This emptiness is also apparent in the beauty section:
And in home goods, one of the greatest triumphs of Target U.S.
“It looks as if workers are being told to push up merchandise on the shelves because the store is unsure on when new shipments will arrive,” Sozzi writes.
These empty shelves are pretty bad in the apparel section.
“Why have a display wall at all?” he asks.
Where there should be multiple rows of products, Target Canada is thinly displaying just one or two bottles of detergent at a time:
The shoe display is no better:
Meanwhile, the clearance section offers products for 90% off. ”That type of discount is alarming at a newly opened business,” Sozzi said.
Some shelves, like those in the paper towel aisle, appear empty:
And that emptiness even extends to food:
“One almost is overcome with this creepy feeling (at least we are given our close tracking of the situation) that Target will go the way of many U.S. brands that ventured into Canadian retailing…extinct,” Sozzi writes.

Splayed across a giant paper canvas with pieces of charcoal firmly grasped in each hand, Heather Hansen begins a grueling physical routine atop a sizeable paper canvas. Her body contorts into carefully choreographed gestures as her writing implements grate across the floor, the long trails resulting in a permanent recording of her physical movements. Part dance and part performance art, the kinetic drawings are a way for Hansen to merge her love for visual art and dance into a unified artform. The final symmetrical patterns that emerge in each pieces are reminiscent of a Rorschach test, or perhaps cycles found in nature.
Hansen most recently had a group exhibition, The Value of a Line, at Ochi Gallery in Ketchum, Idaho which runs through March 31, 2014. HARDCORE: Guy Tapes Himself Eating Two Spiky Cacti
daniprettowhy would you ever?
I was going to post this video last week but then I thought I would tape and upload a video of myself eating three cacti to show the world just how much manlier/stupider I am. Unfortunately, Home Depot didn't have any cacti that were spiky enough to satisfy my ass's lifelong dream of trying to pass nails. Maybe I'll eat a porcupine. This is a video of competitive eater L.A. Beast eating two prickly cacti. It's kind of painful to watch. I honestly don't know how much money you'd have to pay me to try something like this, but you can start by opening your wallet. "I've got $6." Done, tell my @$$hole I'm going to miss it.
Keep going for the video, but check out L.A. Beast's Youtube channel for a bunch more insane eating, including 150 McNuggets, 5,000 calories in five minutes, the world's hottest peppers, etc. etc. Then there's always that nutjob Shoenice, who chugs entire bottles of liquor, drinks glue, eats deodorant and tampons, and should definitely be institutionalized.São Paulo Set to Unveil New Monorail Just in Time for the 2014 World Cup
São Paulo is currently testing trains for a brand new monorail system that is scheduled to open this March in time for the World Cup. The test runs come three years after São Paulo hired a consortium of contractors and suppliers to build the monorail, and it’s just in time for 3.6 million soccer fans to descend on the city.
