"When I was a freshman, my sister was in eighth grade. There was a boy in two of her periods who..."

“When I was a freshman, my sister was in eighth grade. There was a boy in two of her periods who would ask her out every single day. (Third and seventh period, if I remember correctly.) All day during third and seventh she would repeatedly tell him no. She didn’t beat around the bush, she didn’t lie and say she was taken—she just said no.
One day, in third period, after being rejected several times, he said; “I have a gun in my locker. If you don’t say yes, I am going to shoot you in seventh.”
She refused again, but right after class she went to the principal’s office and told them what happened. They searched his locker and there was a gun in his backpack.
When he was arrested, some of my sister’s friends (some female, even) told her that she was selfish for saying no so many times. That because of her, the entire school was in jeopardy. That it wouldn’t have killed her to say yes and give it a try, but because she was so mean to him, he lost his temper. Many of her male friends said it was “girls like her” that made all women seem like cockteases.
Wouldn’t have killed her to say yes? If a man is willing to shoot someone for saying no, what happens to the poor soul who says yes? What happens the first time they disagree? What happens the first time she says she doesn’t want to have sex? That she isn’t in the mood? When they break up?
Years later, when I was a senior, I was the only girl in my Criminal Justice class. The teacher, who used to be a sergeant in the police force, told us a story of something that had happened to a girl he knew when she was in high school. There was a guy who obviously had a crush on her and he made her uncomfortable. One day he finally gathered up the courage to ask her out, and she said no.
The next day, during an assembly, he pulled a gun on her in front of everyone and threatened to kill her if she didn’t date him.
He was tackled to the ground and the gun was taken from him. When my teacher asked the class who was at fault for the crime, I was the only person who said the boy was. All the other kids in the class (who were all boys) said that the girl was, that if she had said yes he would’ve never lost it and brought a gun and tried to kill her. When my teacher said that they were wrong and that this is what is wrong with society, that whenever a white boy commits a crime it’s someone else’s fault (music, television, video games, the victim) one boy raised his hand and literally said; “But if someone were to punch me and I punched him back, who is at fault for the fight? He is, not me. It’s self-defence. She started it, so anything that happens to her is in reaction to her actions .It’s simple cause and effect.”
Even though he spent the rest of the calss period ripping into the boys and saying that you are always responsible for your own actions, and that women are allowed to say no and do not have to date them, they left class laughing about how idiotic he was and that he clearly had no idea how much it hurt to be rejected.
So now we have a new school shooting, based solely on the fact some guy couldn’t get laid, and I see men, boys, applaudin him, or if they’re not applauding him, they’re laying blame on women as a whole. Just like my sister’s friends did. Just like the boys in my Criminal Justice class did.
This isn’t something that’s rare. This isn’t something that never happens, or that a select group of men feel as if they are so entitled to women that saying no is not only the worst possible thing a woman can do, but is considered a form of “defence” when they commit a crime upon them (whether it be rape or murder-as-a-reaction-towards-rejection).
Girls are being killed for saying no to prom invites. Girls are being killed for saying no to men. They are creating an atmosphere where women are too scared to say no, and the worst part is? They are doing it intentionally. They want society to be that way, they want women to say yes entirely out of fear. Even the boys and men who aren’t showing up to schools with guns are saying; “Well, you know, I wouldn’t do that, but you have to admit that if she had just said yes …”
If you are a man and you defend this guys’ actions or try to find an excuse for it, or you denounce what really happened, or in any way lay blame on women, every girl you know, every woman you love, has just now thought to themselves that you might lose your shit and kill them someday for saying no. You have just lost their trust. And you know what? You deserve to lose it.”

Walmart holds food drive...for Walmart employees (again!)

Walmart holds food drive...for Walmart employees (again!):

whitegirlsaintshit:

Once again, a Walmart store has set out a collection box for food donations to support its own employees, who are paid so little that they depend upon social assistance (and public generosity) to survive.

When you shop at your local Walmart, you support the profitability of a business…

literally fuck Walmart, and to anyone who shops there after reading this you are A PART of the problem

if you think you need to shop at Walmart, you are a slave to the marketing and business strategy they have built to convince you this, do not give your money to the CEOs who make millions while paying their employees shit wage

but where is the solution? where else can one find cheap things in communities where there’s no other store? Petition to stop Walmart and find a better solution. Stop condemning people who have nowhere else to go.

Walmart works very hard to drive out local competition and in many markets, most other options in the same cost range closed long ago - especially when you take into account the reduced job/income situations a lot of people have gone through in the past several years (writing from the U.S.).

Individuals cannot spend their way out of corrupt capitalism.

gohoneycocolove:

Chris Rock just said the most insightful thing on race

So, to say Obama is progress is saying that he’s the first black person that is qualified to be president. That’s not black progress. That’s white progress. There’s been black people qualified to be president for hundreds of years. If you saw Tina Turner and Ike having a lovely breakfast over there, would you say their relationship’s improved? Some people would. But a smart person would go, “Oh, he stopped punching her in the face.” It’s not up to her. Ike and Tina Turner’s relationship has nothing to do with Tina Turner. Nothing. It just doesn’t. The question is, you know, my kids are smart, educated, beautiful, polite children. There have been smart, educated, beautiful, polite black children for hundreds of years. The advantage that my children have is that my children are encountering the nicest white people that America has ever produced. Let’s hope America keeps producing nicer white people.”

borntosing22:

dglsplsblg:

on the issue of racism, this is a great illustration.

minority racism towards white people is at most an inconvenience. a singular experience where their race works against them. a truly escapable type of experience because after it, they return to a society tilted in their favor. in fact, even during the experience, they never leave it. they never lose the advantage.

white racism towards minorities is systematic and destructive. we get jailed, shot dead, have our rights ignored, our rights slashed, neighborhoods targeted, job opportunities decreased, healthcare options constrained and more. all these things work together to create a understandable hatred towards whites. a hatred born out of pain, experience, oppression and disenfranchisement. a hatred that makes way more sense than white racism which is born out ignorance. a hatred that is fueled by the  knowledge that whites, even those who swear to not be racist, by their actions and words perpetuate the system of oppression. their words of solidarity ring hallow.

i for one have never trusted easily but white people have a even harder time gaining my trust. very very few do. what’s most disheartening is when you extend that trust only to be betrayed. i had that happen to me a few months ago. that cut was deep but it was a learning experience. 99.99999% of whites are programmed to hate us. that’s just the truth.

As a white woman I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share this because it made me sad and uncomfortable. Then I realized that’s exactly why I need to share it.

01 Dec 17:43

"White people get so angry at the phrase, “You cannot be racist towards white people.” I will never..."

ThePrettiestOne

You can't be racist against white people.

You can have prejudices about us.

You can make assumptions about me because I'm white. Some of those assumptions will be true, some will not. If I'm lucky, I can act enough like a decent human being that you bother taking time to get to know me as an individual.

You can distrust white people. You can avoid white people. You can hate white people.

But "being racist against" white people just means that there is a sociological hierarchy based on race, and I'm lucky enough to be at the top. Which means I get loads of benefits just for walking through the door. (I also get demerits for being female, for being non-neurotypical, for being mentally ill, and for not fully complying with gender norms in dress and behavior).

My theory about people who get upset at the phrase is that it is the result of loss aversion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_aversion). Any time a human observes somebody receiving a perceived benefit that they themselves are told that they cannot have, it triggers this irrational part of our brains. And because losing something affects us so much more than gaining something does, our brains are able to want to say that we are victims of a system that in fact benefits us every day... not because we actually want to experience the bad side, but because we are upset that we don't get the benefits that we perceive that the people who do experience the bad side get.

tl;dr – Some people want to have their cake and eat it too. Even though eating the cake means they don’t have the cake anymore.

White people get so angry at the phrase, “You cannot be racist towards white people.”

I will never understand why.

Why are you so angry that you are being treated as actual human beings? You are not reduced to caricatures, but portrayed as characters. You are treated fairly, judged not by your skin tone, but by the ways that you carry yourselves, by your actions.

Why do you want to experience racism so badly? It is not fun to be mocked, dehumanized, attacked, killed, incarcerated simply for daring to exist. It is not fun to know nothing of your history or family because it was torn apart, whether through distance or death. It is not fun to hear, at every turn, comments reminding you of your lesser status as humans.

Do you really want to turn on the tv, open a magazine, watch a movie, play a video game, and not see yourself? Or, even better, to only see yourself as a criminal, as a drunk, a mocking stereotype, or as someone to be killed off? Or would you rather see fleshed out, well-written characters with lives and personalities and feelings? I know which I’d rather pick.

If I were a white person, the phrase, “You cannot be racist towards white people,” would be the best thing I could ever hear.

Wondering how the word gypsy is a racial slur? Why are you referring to it as the G word when it literally means a free spirited traveller. What is so offensive about that?

image

Let me tell you a story, ignorant one.

Once upon a time, there were a group of people migrating from northern India and Pakistan after the invasion “of the Persian Muslims who have since settled in Trukey, all of Europe, and the Americas These people are called the Rromani.” (x)

Once the pale bird feces people of Europe came into contact with the Rromani, they believed them to hail from Egypt, thus calling them Gypsies.

Now about what disgusting white people like you have been trying to turn this racial slur into. There is nothing about being a free spirited traveller if you’re called such a word. What is up with white people romanticizing everything to make it seem all nice and rainbows for them?

"They were not nomadic by choice. They moved around because they had to… they were persecuted everywhere they went, and still are, to this day. They were persecuted alongside the Jews in the Holocaust – the Roma & Sinti". They were forced to have this sort of nomadic lifestyle because "no country wanted them there". (x)

Let’s not forget these lovely things Rromani people did and still go through because of who they are:

  • "Forced sterilization (yes, it is still happening)
  • Eviction
  • Harassment (by law enforcement as well as civilians)
  • Fingerprinting (this is happening in Italy right now – all Romani people are being fingerprinted, simply because our race is considered ‘criminal’)
  • Concentration camps
  • Starvation
  • Exclusion from public schools and welfare programs
  • Bombings (it is not uncommon in places like the Czech Republic for people to throw molotov cocktails into the windows of Romani homes)” (x)

“First and foremost: THE WORD “GYPSY” IS AN ETHNIC SLUR. It is a pejorative. It is an exonym that is hurtful and offensive. You need to accept this, period.

We are NOT your halloween costume. We are NOT your flowy skirt. We are NOT your fashion sense. We are NOT your wanderlust. We are NOT ‘boho.’

Gypsy is not fashion. Gypsy is not traveling. Gypsy is not a headband or a costume, or boho, or a long skirt.

Gypsy is a hurtful ethnic slur used to refer to the Romani people.

We cannot seem to emphasize this enough to people. This word is a slur. It was created to be a slur. Its meaning does not change. It will always be a slur. It will always be offensive.

'The word is not yours. It’s ours. We can use it as we see fit. You cannot.’ - biggadjeworld

We are a real people, with traditions, culture, and colorful heritage that spans centuries.” (x)

The “x”s in the post refer to sources you can click on and educate yourself with. On those pages, there are more links to become familiar to this slur and the Rromani people.

Also, don’t forget to stop by thisisnotromani!

dynastylnoire:

writeswrongs:

By now I hope at least some of you have heard of Javier Payne, a 14-year-old black boy from the Bronx who was attacked by the NYPD last weekend as he was walking home from a hookah shop in his neighborhood.

Cops said he was fighting with another boy, a 13-year-old neighbor in the area.

So what do you do when two boys are fighting?

Well, if you’re the NYPD, and the boys in question are black, you throw one of them through a window, puncturing his lung. As he lies there with blood filling his lungs, you handcuff him and refuse to call an ambulance. When you do call an ambulance, you enter the protocol for an adult drunk, instead of a dying child. When the ambulance comes, you refuse to let the paramedics uncuff him. Even as the paramedics explain that this boy is dying, you argue that he’s faking it and that he deserves to die there on the street for fighting with another boy.  When you finally do let the paramedics uncuff him and take him to the hospital, you fail to report that you threw him through a glass window despite dozens of eye-witnesses reporting the opposite.  When you are called upon by the community to account for your actions, you decide to do an “internal investigation” - therefore being accountable to no one outside your division. You encourage the deregulation of police conduct and refuse to let outsiders investigate how you train your officers.

And what do you do, if you’re a concerned citizen who is tired of seeing this? You write Bill de Blasio and you ask him to start an outside investigation into police brutality.  Or at least that’s what I did. And if you want to cosign what I wrote him, you can do that here. And if you want to signal boost that for Javier Payne, you can do that too. You can sign my petition letter here.

Look, we have established definitions of what women are attracted to.  These are tried-and-true models that are absolutely guaranteed to make women receptive to being fucked while also making men feel powerful.  They’re easy to make and we surely churn out enough of them that you should be satisfied.

If you keep finding the wrong things attractive and finding stuff sexy without permission and taking the stuff we made for ourselves and getting off on it without our approval, that makes us really uncomfortable.  You’re implying that we’re doing our job badly and accidentally manufacturing lady-stuff when we’re actually working very hard to make the best first-class man-stuff.

Until you’re into the things we say adult women like, by definition you’re not an adult woman, so we will continue to shame you for your childishness until you behave.

“As early as the 1920s, researchers giving IQ tests to non-Westerners realized that any test of intelligence is strongly, if subtly, imbued with cultural biases… Samoans, when given a test requiring them to trace a route form point A to point B, often chose not the most direct route (the “correct” answer), but rather the most aesthetically pleasing one. Australian aborigines find it difficult to understand why a friend would ask them to solve a difficult puzzle and not help them with it. Indeed, the assumption that one must provide answers alone, without assistance from those who are older and wiser, is a statement about the culture-bound view of intelligence. Certainly the smartest thing to do, when face with a difficult problem, is to seek the advice of more experienced relatives and friends!”

I didn’t see this on my dash at all yesterday or the day before, which made me sad, so I’m posting about it now.

That handsome young man right there? That’s Kwasi Enin, a high school student who was accepted to all eight Ivy League schools. Not one or two, but ALL OF THEM.

The 17-year-old violist and aspiring physician applied to all eight [Ivy League schools], from Brown to Yale.

The responses began rolling in over the past few months, and by late last week when he opened an e-mail from Harvard, he found he’d been accepted to every one. School district officials provided scanned copies of acceptance letters from all eight Monday. Yale confirmed that it was holding a spot for Enin. (x)

Kwasi is 11th in a class of 647 at William Floyd in New York, meaning he’s in the top 2% of his class. He scored 2,250 out of 2,400 points on the SAT. And by the time this kid graduates, he’ll have taken 11 AP courses. He’s also a musician who sings in his school’s a capella group and volunteers in his local hospital’s radiation department.

I just wanted to highlight this kid and his amazing achievements. He’s the kind of future our world needs.

bukkake-windmill:

revolutionary-mindset:

Earlier this week, authorities released video of a Cleveland police officer fatally shooting 12-year-old Tamir Rice. He was killed within two seconds of the cop’s arrival at a park where he was seen holding an airsoft gun. On the same day the video was released, Northeast Ohio Media Group published a report titled “Tamir Rice’s father has history of domestic violence.”

The article, which has so far been shared on Facebook over eight thousand baffling times, reports that Tamir Rice’s father has a history of violence against women, including Rice’s mother. Although it never explains the significance of this fact, it is preceded by an update:

(Update: A line has been added to this story to give insight into the motivation to investigate the parents’ background)

That line—added after the fact, presumably due to questions about the article’s relevance—doesn’t give the insight promised: “People from across the region have been asking whether Rice grew up around violence.” Oh, have they?

Assuming it is true that “people from across the region” have been asking whether a child mistakenly killed by police while holding a toy “grew up around violence” (and there is obviously interest in the answer, seen in the incredible amount of social sharing), it is hard—impossible, really—to justify taking seriously, and acting upon, the clear search for blame in an innocent child.

12-year-old Tamir Rice was killed by police in two seconds. His parents’ backgrounds, violent or not, had no bearing on his death.

y’all are we just not going to talk about this? this 20 year old was found murdered inside a car at the same apartment complex Mike Brown was killed in front of. he had been shot in the head & set on fire. he was the best friend of Dorian Johnson—the guy who was with Mike Brown when he was killed & key eyewitness. y’all think this is a coincidence? mainstream media has barely covered it; there’s almost no information; it’s unclear whether an investigation is actually even happening and if it is, what the fuck it’s revealing. y’all seen the reports going around of how many KKK members there probably are in the ferguson police department. this doesn’t sound outside their ballpark. we need to boost this, to draw attention to the strategic murder of this young man, and, god, demand some kind of safety measures be taken for not only the leading figures of the movement in ferguson but their loved ones as well—because apparently it’s fucking open season on black people here.
