How We Teach Our Kids That Women Are Liars:
Two weeks ago a man in France was arrested for raping his daughter. She’d gone to her school counselor and then the police, but they needed “hard evidence.” So, she videotaped her next assault. Her father was eventually arrested. His attorney explained, “There was a period when he was unemployed and in the middle of a divorce. He insists that these acts did not stretch back further than three or four months. His daughter says longer. But everyone should be very careful in what they say.” Because, really, even despite her seeking help, her testimony, her bravery in setting up a webcam to film her father raping her, you really can’t believe what the girl says, can you?
Everyone “knows” this. Even children.
Three years ago, in fly-on-the-wall fashion of parent drivers everywhere, I listened while a 14-year-old girl in the back seat of my car described how angry she was that her parents had stopped allowing her to walk home alone just because a girl in her neighborhood “claimed she was raped.” When I asked her if there was any reason to think the girl’s story was not true, she said, “Girls lie about rape all the time.”
She didn’t know the person, she just assumed she was lying.
No one says, “You can’t trust women,” but distrust them we do. College students surveyed revealed that they think up to 50% of their female peers lie when they accuse someone of rape, despite wide-scale evidence and multi-country studies that show the incident of false rape reports to be in the 2%-8% range, pretty much the same as false claims for other crimes. As late as 2003, people jokingly (wink, wink) referred to Philadelphia’s sex crimes unit as “the lying bitch unit.” If an 11-year-old girl told an adult that her father took out a Craigslist ad to find someone to beat and rape her while he watched, as recently actually occurred, what do you think the response would be? Would she need to provide a videotape after the fact?
It goes way beyond sexual assault as well. That’s just the most likely and obvious demonstration of “women are born to lie” myths. Women’s credibility is questioned in the workplace, in courts, by law enforcement, indoctors’ offices, and in our political system. People don’t trust women to be bosses, or pilots, or employees. Pakistan’s controversial Hudood Ordinance still requires a female rape victim to procure four male witnesses to her rape or risk prosecution for adultery. In August, a survey of managers in the United States revealed that they overwhelmingly distrust women who request flextime. It’s notable, of course, that women are trusted to be mothers—the largest pool of undervalued, unpaid, economically crucial labor.
Pop culture and art are just the cherry on the top of the icing on a huge cake. The United States is among the most religious of all countries in the industrialized world. So, while some people wring their hands over hip hop, I’m more worried about how men like Rick Santorum and Ken Cuccinelli explain to their daughters why they can’t be priests. I know that there is hip hop that exceeds the bounds of taste and is sodden with misogyny. But, people seem to think that those manifestations of hatred are outside of the mainstream when, in reality, it’s just more of the same set to great beats. Hip hop has nothing on religious misogyny and its political expression.
An entire political party’s “social policy” agenda is being pursued under a rubric that insists women need “permission slips” and “waiting periods.” The recent shutdown? Conservatives holding the country hostage because they want to add anti-abortion “conscience clause” language to legislation. Whose consciences are we talking about? All the morally incompetent and untrustworthy men who need abortions?
It’s no exaggeration to say that distrust of women is the driving force of the “social issues” agenda of the Republican Party. From food stamps and “legitimate rape,” to violence against women and immigration policy. “We need to target the mother. Call it sexist, but that’s the way nature made it,” explained the man who penned Arizona’s immigration law. “Men don’t drop anchor babies, illegal alien mothers do.” I could do this ad infinitum.

Outro dia alguém recomendou, em algum post, um artigo de Alyssa Goldstein sobre como o estereótipo de que homens gostam de sexo, e mulheres não, é algo bastante recente (e obviamente falso). Escrevi um pouco sobre isso depois de ler Promiscuidades, da Naomi Wolf, mas já faz um tempinho.
Então pedi para que uma leitora que já colaborou com uma tradução linda traduzisse o texto da Goldstein pro português. Lígia é professora de inglês e tradutora (o email dela, pra quem precisar, é ligets@gmail.com). E este artigo pode abrir a cabeça de muita gente.
Hoje em dia, no entanto, a crença de que homens se interessam por sexo mais do que mulheres está tão completamente disseminada que poucos ousam questioná-la. Seja por causa de hormônios, ou por parte da "natureza humana", homens simplesmente precisam se masturbar e consumir pornografia muito mais do que as mulheres (e se a mulher também tem essa necessidade, é porque há algo de errado com ela). De acordo com o senso comum, mulheres têm que ser convencidas a fazer sexo, devem ser persuadidas ou até forçadas até toparem, porque, afinal, fazer sexo não é algo que elas gostam tanto assim. Para as mulheres, sexo é algo ligeiramente desagradável, algo que elas fazem em busca de aprovação, apoio financeiro, ou para manter uma relação estável. E, já que as mulheres não são -- ao contrario dos homens -- escravas de seu desejo, cabe a elas a responsabilidade de evitar que "tirem proveito delas".
A ideia de que homens são naturalmente mais interessados em sexo é tão difundida que fica difícil imaginar que as pessoas em algum momento pensaram diferente. Ainda assim, por grande parte da historia do mundo ocidental, desde a Grécia Antiga ate o início do século 19, eram as mulheres que se acreditavam serem guiadas por um desejo sexual desenfreado. Em um mito da Grécia antiga, Zeus e Hera discutem sobre quem gosta mais de sexo, o homem ou a mulher. Eles então consultam o profeta Tirésias (a quem Hera havia uma vez transformado em mulher), para dar sua opinião. "Se o desejo sexual fosse dividido em dez partes, apenas uma delas caberia ao homem. As nove restantes pertencem à mulher", respondeu o profeta.
Tempos depois, a mulher passou a ser vista como herdeira de Eva: sedutora e traidora. Seu ímpeto sexual era visto como um sinal de sua irracionalidade, de sua inferioridade moral e intelectual, e justificava o controle acirrado de pais e maridos. Os homens, não sendo consumidos pelo desejo carnal, e muito mais dotados de autocontrole, eram naturalmente mais adequados para posições de poder e influência.
O médico e psicólogo Havelock Ellis pode ter sido o primeiro a documentar a mudança ideológica que havia acontecido. No seu livro de 1903, Psicologia do Sexo, ele discorre sobre várias épocas e culturas, e praticamente todas atestam o maior desejo sexual das mulheres. Nos anos 1600s, por exemplo, foi escrito que as mulheres não se sujeitariam a passar pelo parto, não fosse o prazer que obtinham do ato sexual não fosse muito maior que o dos homens. Na mesma época, foi dito ainda que as mulheres eram muito mais aptas ao sexo e muito mais ardentes que os homens. E mais: acreditava-se que as mulheres, durante determinados períodos, eram completamente dominadas pelo impulso sexual.
Mas os tempos estavam mudando. Em 1891, H. Fehling tentou ir contra o senso comum: "a ideia de que o desejo sexual feminino é tão intenso quanto o masculino é completamente equivocada. O surgimento do interesse sexual no amor de uma jovem é patológico". Em 1896, Windscheid escreveu: “na mulher normal, especialmente aquela das camadas sociais mais elevadas, o instinto sexual é adquirido, não inato. Quando é inato, ou surge por si só, é uma anormalidade. Como as mulheres não conhecem esse instinto antes do casamento, elas não sentem falta".
É claro que as ideias a respeito de gênero e sexualidade não são as mesmas em todos os lugares e que, em cada lugar, há sempre debates e diferentes pontos de vista. A história dessa inversão de paradigma não é fácil de traçar, não aconteceu de maneira uniforme, nem de uma hora para outra. A historiadora Nancy Cott aponta a ascensão do protestantismo como motor dessa mudança, pelo menos na região americana da Nova Inglaterra. Ministros protestantes, cujas congregações eram cada vez mais formadas por mulheres brancas de classe média, passaram a considerar prudente descrever suas fiéis como seres morais, prontas para responder ao chamado da religião (ao invés de “sedutora e traidora herdeira de Eva”).
As mulheres, por sua vez, abraçaram esse papel, e ajudaram a construí-lo. Esse era o caminho para um certo nível de igualdade com os homens, ou até mesmo de superioridade. Por meio dos evangelhos, mulheres eram exaltadas como seres acima da natureza humana, criadas como anjos. Se as mulheres seriam o novo símbolo da devoção religiosa dos protestantes, elas teriam de abrir mão de reconhecer seus desejos sexuais. Apesar de os puritanos acreditarem ser aceitável, tanto homens quanto mulheres, ter desejos sexuais, as mulheres agora poderiam admitir fazer sexo apenas como ferramenta de manutenção de seus casamentos, e para permitir a realização de seu desejo de maternidade. A supressão dos instintos carnais, diz Nancy Cott, foi o passaporte das mulheres à igualdade moral.
Se posicionando como castas e virtuosas, as mulheres protestantes podiam agora tentar ser vistas como moral e intelectualmente iguais aos homens. Podiam tentar encontrar um lugar na vida política, advogando por causas como a caridade e a proibição do álcool. Além disso, numa época em que os maridos podiam legalmente estuprar suas mulheres (algo que só mudou nos Estados Unidos em 1933), a castidade e a falta de desejo pelo menos dava às mulheres uma desculpa para tentar escapar do sexo indesejado com seus maridos.
Esses benefícios, no entanto, estavam restritos apenas a um grupo de mulheres. A ideia da castidade e virtude feminina se aplicava apenas às mulheres brancas e de classe média. Proletárias, imigrantes e mulheres negras continuavam a ser vistas como dotadas de instinto sexual e, portanto, como disponíveis sexualmente. Mulheres brancas e de classe média podiam enfatizar suas similaridades com os homens e, assim ter acesso a alguns de seus privilégios. Sua posição dependia fundamentalmente da sua distinção em relação aos outros tipos de mulheres.
Mas se as mulheres puderam se elevar a um status de quase anjos, por serem desprovidas de desejo, agora a queda era muito maior caso se entregassem a seus instintos. Antes, as mulheres que pecavam, desde que se arrependessem, podiam ser reintegradas à comunidade. Agora, se pecassem, estariam marcadas por toda a vida. Essas “mulheres decaídas” eram afastadas de suas famílias e muitas vezes acabavam trabalhando como prostitutas para se manterem.
Anteriormente, o desejo sexual feminino era prova da inferioridade das mulheres, mas assim que o estereótipo se inverteu, ninguém argumentou que a lascívia masculina era sinal de irracionalidade, algo que pudesse impedir homens de participar de negócios e da vida política. Não só não era um defeito, como um grande apetite sexual passou a ser considerado positivo, quando virou uma característica masculina. Agora as mulheres, desprovidas de desejo sexual, não possuíam a ambição que leva ao sucesso.
Assim como o sexo, a vida profissional era considerada suja e desagradável, dificilmente compatível com a delicadeza feminina. Já que seus instintos eram maternais ao invés de sexuais, era melhor que as mulheres ficassem em casa, cuidando de seus filhos. Mulheres negras e pobres, no entanto, ficaram de fora dessa idealização. Ainda eram vistas como apropriadas tanto para o trabalho, quanto para satisfazer os impulsos sexuais dos homens brancos, que não podiam contar mais com suas esposas angelicais para supri-los.
Porém, a mais duradora consequência da ideia da mulher sem desejo foi o surgimento de um sexismo sorrateiro, cujas evidências aparecem a todo o momento em comerciais de fast-food e cerveja, em que homens são retratados como meninos de cinco anos em corpos de adulto. Mulheres são mais espertas, mais carinhosas, mais responsáveis, mais prestativas; homens, pelo contrário, são guiados pelo instinto e pelos desejos carnais.
Como homens são incapazes de ajudar a criar seus próprios filhos (já que eles mesmos são crianças), esse papel deve recair sobre a mulher. Como homens são incompetentes demais para fazer o trabalho doméstico, ele deve ficar a cargo das mulheres. Como é impossível para um homem se conter, cabe à mulher se resguardar, usando saias compridas, ficando longe da bebida e da paquera. Para as mulheres, o fracasso por ter parecido puras demais agora significa que elas são responsáveis se forem estupradas. "A pureza das mulheres é a fronteira eterna contra a qual a maré da natureza sexual masculina explode", como disse um reformista do século 19. Essa atitude dura até hoje.
Mesmo quando os papéis de gênero se invertem, o sexismo tem uma capacidade impressionante de se adaptar, e a amnésia histórica colabora para isso. A associação do homem com apetite sexual é uma construção social recente, tanto quanto a associação de meninos com azul e meninas com rosa (menos de cem anos atrás, o papel das cores também era invertido).
Mas mesmo com todas essas inversões, algumas coisas continuam surpreendentemente iguais. Quando as mulheres eram vistas como sexuais, seu lugar era em casa, como cuidadoras e mães. Quando as mulheres se tornaram sem desejo, seu papel continuou sendo em casa, como cuidadoras e mães. Não é engraçado como isso funciona? Os papeis de gênero ganham sua força pelo fato de parecerem naturais e eternos. Olhando para o passado, podemos observar como de fato são essas categorias: criadas por pessoas, e passíveis de serem mudadas por pessoas.

The philosopher Susan Sontag has written achingly about the way in which men are allowed to age and women are not.
The great advantage men have is that our culture allows two standards of male beauty: the boy and the man. The beauty of a boy resembles the beauty of a girl. In both sexes it is a fragile kind of beauty and flourishes naturally only in the early part of the life-cycle. Happily, men are able to accept themselves under another standard of good looks — heavier, rougher, more thickly built…
There is no equivalent of this second standard for women. The single standard of beauty for women dictates that they must go on having clear skin. Every wrinkle, every line, every gray hair, is a defeat.
Perhaps nowhere is this more plain than in the movies, where men’s love interests stay the same age as they get older, and @sphericalfruit sent in a fantastic example. The four posters below are part of a new marketing plan for the forthcoming movie, The Counselor.
Notice anything?
What a stunning example of Sontag’s observation. The men are not considered unattractive by virtue of the fact that you can tell they have skin. The women, in contrast, have faces that are so smooth that they look inhuman; their images are halfway between photograph and cartoon. Amazingly, this treatment of images of men and women is so ubiquitous that it now looks more or less normal to us.

He pointed a gun at a white woman.
Let me be REALLY clear here: I am white, and I am a woman. I am not, in any way, shape, or form, saying that domestic violence isn’t a massive fucking problem. I am not saying that Samantha Scheibe wasn’t absolutely right to fear for her life, call the police, and press charges. I am 100% on Samantha Scheibe’s side—but the point I am making is not about her.
This is a man who, as I’m sure you can all *recite* by now, saw a black teenage boy named Trayvon Martin walking down the street, at which point Zimmerman followed Martin in his car, called the police, stopped his car and got out, taking his loaded gun with him, to follow Martin, and shot him to death. Martin was walking home from the store with Skittles and an iced tea.
Shot him to death. Police couldn’t give a shit. They let him go. You all know the rest of the disgusting story, racist story.
The guy points a gun at a white woman? He’s arrested, booked, and held without bail.
C’mon, FOX News, hold another fundraiser for the guy’s legal expenses!
I DARE YOU.
This articulates EVERYTHING I have been feeling about this. The issue here isn’t that this white woman called the police because she feared for her life - that is legitimate and the police acted appropriately. The issue is that the police did not act appropriately the last time this violent aggressor harmed someone. The issue isn’t that the police picked him up in less than 44 minutes, it’s that for Trayvon they didn’t bother to arrest this asshole for 44 days.
