You know what? It is a really good time for awesome fantasy comics about warrior women. Here are some of the ones I’m loving:

  • Rat Queens, by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch
  • The Legend of Bold Riley, by Leia Weathington, Marco Aidala, Konstantin Pogorelov, Vanessa Gillings, Kelly McClellan, and Jason Thompson
  • Red Sonja, by Gail Simone and Walter Geovanni
  • Princeless, by Jeremy Whitley and M. Goodwin
  • Princess Ugg, by Ted Naifeh

Do you have others you’re liking?

These are great books to be mentioned with…love them all!

You probably can’t get these amazing Sega items ⊟

The Mega Drive doll (with controllers for hands, oh my god) and the Game Gear pen case will be sold by Cospa at Tokyo Game Show 2014.

[Update: As Matty pointed out, they’re available to preorder at AmiAmi!]

I’m really enjoying the image of a journalist at TGS, conducting interviews, navigating the cramped show floor, and introducing themselves to executives… while awkwardly carrying around a giant Mega Drive. I totally would have been that guy. Via Miki800.

NFL Network thinks the Eagles run 24 plays per second

by Bill Hanstock

Give me the fastest team you have. No, that's too fast.

Everyone knows that Chip Kelly likes his teams to play fast. But there's "hurry-up offense" fast and then there's "Barry Allen" fast.

According to NFL Network, Chip Kelly's offense plays even faster than you thought possible pic.twitter.com/la9tiVH8yB

Hostess CupCake

In the early 1990s, a commercial featuring a shark aired. The commercial begins with a shark swimming through the ocean until something near the surface catches his attention. He thinks a Hostess CupCake is at the surface. As he swims closer, the CupCake turns out to be a woman sitting in an inner tube. The shark bumps the lady into the air, then says, “Hey! Where’s the cream filling?” as the woman falls into the ocean. In 1998, a commercial featuring a doll aired. In 2000, a commercial featuring a rhinoceros aired. The commercial begins with the grasslands of Africa and a rhinoceros is grazing until something gets his attention. He thinks it’s a Hostess CupCake. The rhino gets ready to charge, and the CupCake turns out to be a spare tire on the front of a safari jeep. Tourists are viewing the grassland just as the rhino charges. The tourists scream as the rhino charges at the jeep. The rhino says, “Hey! Where’s the cream filling?” as the jeep is seen stuck on his horn. In 2002, a commercial featuring Dracula aired. The commercial begins in Transylvania, where Dracula is getting ready to bit a woman’s neck and suck her blood until something catches his attention. He turns into a bat and flies out the window. He thinks he sees a Hostess CupCake. But as flies closer, the Cupcake turns out to be a neon hotel sign. He crashes into the sign and turns back into Dracula. He faints after he says, “Hey! Where’s the cream filling?” In 2004, a commercial featuring a dragon aired. The commercial begins with a knight guarding a castle. Then, a green dragon is seen flying through the clouds until he sees a Hostess Cupcake, but when he flies toward it, the Hostess CupCake turns out to be Rapunzel in her tower. The dragon and Rapunzel crash through the tower and the dragon says, “Hey! Where’s the cream filling?”

California Bans 'Gay Panic' Defense

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

California Bans 'Gay Panic' Defense:

invisiblelad:

California is the first state to pass a ban on using the “gay panic” defense to reduce a murder charge.

You can no longer wiggle out of a murder charge in California by saying you were frightened by a scary lesbian.

Current California law allows a murder charge to be reduced to manslaughter if the killing happened in the heat of passion - the so-called “panic defense”. Defendants charged with murdering members of the LGBT community have been able to claim they acted in a “moment of passion” upon discovering the victim was LGBT, and therefor their crime met the requirements for a reduced charge of manslaughter. The bill that passed the Assembly this week will bar defendants from using their victim’s gender or sexual orientation to support a panic defense. An identical bill passed the state senate in May.

Democratic Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla (right) sponsored the bill, which passed on a 50-10 vote. Ms. Bonilla told reportersthat such defenses legitimize violence against LGBT people.

Though The American Bar Association advocates curtailing the use of the “gay panic” defense, California is the first state to ban using the “heat of passion” defense because the victim was LGBT.

The bill now heads for Governor Jerry Brown’s desk for his signature.

I’ve been so busy lately I forgot to share this.

The Los Angeles Pobladores, or “townspeople,” were a group of 44 settlers and four soldiers from Mexico who established the famed city on this day in 1781 in what is now California. The settlers came from various Spanish castes, with over half of the group being of African descent.

Ex-Iron Maiden Guitarist Says He Was Fired for Liking the Eagles

by djempirical

Are the Eagles indirectly to blame for one of Iron Maiden‘s earliest lineup changes?

That’s the allegation made by former guitarist Dennis Stratton, whose brief tenure with the band lasted just long enough for him to contribute to their 1980 self-titled debut album. Following a series of tour dates in support of Kiss and Judas Priest, Stratton was fired and replaced with Adrian Smith, who joined in time to play on the 1981 follow-up, ‘Killers.’ As Stratton sees it, it was his fondness for what he calls “easy listening music” that prompted manager Rod Smallwood to call for his dismissal.

“I always take a little stereo away with me,” he recalled during an appearance on the Gary Bushell Talk Show (which you can listen to below via Classic Rock Magazine). “The stuff I was playing at the time was Whitesnake, the Eagles, George Benson, Steely Dan — easy-listening music, just to relax to. I was playing it in my hotel room and Rod heard it. He came in and started bawling and shouting. He said, ‘If anyone walks past this door and heard the Eagles coming out of this room, it’s going to cause trouble with the band.’ I went, ‘Don’t be stupid’ – but these silly little things started to niggle him. He would never give me credit for being responsible for my own actions. It went on and on and on.”

That kind of thing was par for the course in a situation where, according to Stratton, “There wasn’t a lot of friendship … there was no bond,” but he still ended up being part of a project in the ’90s with his fellow Maiden alum, singer Paul Di’Anno. As he relates in the interview, that attempt at working together also ended in disaster, with Di’Anno allegedly committing an assault that Stratton says he’s never forgiven him for — and is the reason he tries not to even speak his former bandmate’s name today.
