Greeting Cards for Antisocial Pessimists

by Dorothy

There are a few extra sad cards for baby left over from Fun Club’s end run. While these cards are very appropriate for babies they are also appropriate for graduates, newlyweds and your mailman at Christmas. (“You’re Going to Disappoint Us / But Not As Much As We’re Going to Disappoint You” did not make the cut).

Screenprinted on heavy paper and built to last so no one can forget that terrible thing you did. In the confusing mix and match card aisle of the attic shoppe.

Why Do So Many People in Arkansas Not Believe Tom Cotton Is Straight?

by gguillotte
Arkansas senator Tom Cotton ignited a firestorm yesterday when he said on CNN that gays who were complaining about anti-gay legislation in Indiana and Arkansas should shut up because, hey, at least they weren't being killed like in Iran. So how come nobody in Arkansas believes he's straight?

Multnomah ESD Fires 2014 Oregon Teacher Of The Year . News | OPB

by gguillotte
It started last year, when teacher Brett Bigham claimed the district pushed him to stop publicly discussing his sexual orientation. Bigham’s allegations of discrimination and retaliation triggered two Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries investigations into the service district. Bigham was placed on administrative leave last month. District spokeswoman Laura Conroy said he was fired Friday after he declined mediation.

Why Women Don’t Negotiate Their Job Offers

firehose

via ThePrettiestOne
"we love it when women negotiate assertively for others. It’s just when women are negotiating assertively for themselves — particularly around pay — where we find a backlash. Unsurprisingly, research also shows that women perform better (e.g., negotiate higher salaries) when their role is to advocate for others as opposed to negotiating for more for themselves"

Why Women Don’t Negotiate Their Job Offers:

misandry-mermaid:

In repeated studies, the social cost of negotiating for higher pay has been found to be greater for women than it is for men. Men can certainly overplay their hand and alienate negotiating counterparts. However, in most published studies, the social cost of negotiating for pay is not significant for men, while it is significant for women.
The results of this research are important to understand before one criticizes a woman — or a woman criticizes herself — for being reluctant to negotiate for more pay. Their reticence is based on an accurate read of the social environment. Women get a nervous feeling about negotiating for higher pay because they are intuiting — correctly — that self-advocating for higher pay would present a socially difficult situation for them — more so than for men.
But here’s a twist: we love it when women negotiate assertively for others. It’s just when women are negotiating assertively for themselves — particularly around pay — where we find a backlash. Unsurprisingly, research also shows that women perform better (e.g., negotiate higher salaries) when their role is to advocate for others as opposed to negotiating for more for themselves. Men’s behavior and the ensuing social effects don’t shift much depending on whether they are advocating for themselves or others.

The science of why whiskey tastes so good

by Joseph Stromberg
firehose

via Ibstopher: "How to teach college chemistry?"

What makes whiskey so delicious?

Andy Brunning, the chemistry teacher behind the blog Compound Interest, has an excellent new graphic that details the liquor's complex chemistry:

For a larger version, click here. (Andy Brunning/Compound Interest)

As Brunning points out, these flavorful compounds come from a number of different parts of the production process.

Lactones and aldehydes come from precursor molecules present in oak, which are then transferred into the liquor as it's aged in oak barrels.

Many Scotch whiskies also have a characteristic smoky flavor that comes from phenol compounds. These phenols result from the peat moss that's burnt to dry out barley before it's fermented.

Bob Odenkirk & David Cross Sketch Comedy Gets Netflix Series Order

IT'S HAPPENING

EXCLUSIVE: They’re back! Frequent collaborators and longtime friends Bob Odenkirk and David Cross have teamed for a new sketch comedy series, With Bob and David, which has been picked up by Netflix. The streaming service has ordered four half-hour episodes and one hourlong “making-of” special from the project, which has just started production.

Here is how Odenkirk and Cross describe With Bob and David: After being dishonorably discharged from the Navy SEAL, Bob and David are back serving our country the way they do best: making sketch comedy. Four half-hours of brand-new comedy featuring all new characters, all new scenes and, most importantly, all new wigs.

It's the powerlessness, dummy!

firehose

via Jfiorato

Yesterday Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, said this: "There is a third political party emerging in this country called: 'CEOs.' More than 100 are already involved in turning Indiana around!"

Something about that didn't feel right, so I said so. A discussion ensued.

What is it that doesn't feel right? Well, who owns the other two political parties, if he's starting the third one? Same people. So if we're going to start another political party, shouldn't it be one where my voice matters?

It's so fucked up. Here's a guy who is interviewed on TV, has a conference that takes over the city of SF. He donates to hospitals and they change the name to Benioff, as if it were a member of his family. He is one of the most listened-to people there are. And now he's boasting, on Facebook of all places (one of the few places it feels like my voice might matter just a bit, I know it's an illusion, planned by psychiatrists) that he's formed the third party and guess who it represents? The same people as the other two.

You could say that's just the way it is, and that's the way it always has been, but it doesn't mean I have to like it, and it doesn't mean it's always going to be that way.

I don't like tech, for this reason. They've so simplified the world, it's just what matters to them that matters. 100 CEOs signed the petition. That's the size of the world for Benioff. I know his PR people say otherwise, but I think a little truth just leaked out there.

One more thing: You want a real crusade Mr Benioff -- let's get rid of Citizens United and restore some of the power to the people. That would show real conviction.

PS: Liz Gannes calls out the tech leaders for hypocrisy. She makes a good point. While they're taking political action against Indiana discriminating against gays, they're not doing much about gender discrimination in tech. However, no mention of age discrimination in her piece, and in another piece by the same author today she refers to seniors as "old fogies." Tech, including reporters, needs to learn something more basic -- respect for people.

Can cocktails de-throne beer? - Yahoo Finance

by gguillotte
Beer is the undisputed king of alcohol, making up nearly half of the alcoholic beverage market. But one company is trying to help the cocktail make a comeback. And not just cocktails – which would be a somewhat easy feat, given that spirit sales are on the rise – but pre-made cocktails, which have traditionally been a sector of the alcoholic beverage market about as popular as non-alcoholic beer. The company is Austin Cocktails, and over the past three years they have developed four vodka based, pre-mixed cocktails using all-natural ingredients like mint, coconut water and agave. Several more, including a few tequila-based varieties, are currently in the approval process.

Carrie Brownstein beat

That's about all the additional info they get once they arrive at the CIA's lab in New Mexico, where Slater nearly pummels Archer, who can't resist antagonizing him, to Cyril's annoyance ("Cyril ... are you jealous? I'm gonna make it up to you, buddy!" "Please don't.") A crisp female CIA scientist with a complicated name (and Carrie Brownstein's voice) makes sure everyone knows that "Dr. Kovacs and I are lovers" before revealing the vessel they'll be piloting through Kovacs' bloodstream: the Nereus, a submarine that more resembles a spaceship.

Prison Inmate Emails His Own Release Instructions To the Prison - Slashdot

A fraudster used a mobile phone while inside a UK prison to email the prison a notice for him to be released. The prison staff then released him. The domain was registered in the name of the police officer investigating him, and its address was the court building. The inmate was in prison for fraud — he was originally convicted after calling several banks and getting them to send him upwards of £1.8 million.
