Hackers apparently broke into at least two of North Korea's government-run online sites Thursday, as tensions rose on the Korean Peninsula.

Google remains the undisputed king of search, with about two-thirds of the market. But the nature of search is changing, especially as more people search for what they want to buy, eat or learn on their mobile devices.

League of Legends is notorious for a lot of things: a steep yet rewarding learning curve, a sometimes less-than-cuddly community, making all the money and stealing all your friends and leaving you painfully alone/playing Heroes of Newerth, etc. And then, of course, there’s that other thing people don’t talk about nearly enough: shamelessly exposed, highly impractical female character designs. Yes, it’s fantasy. Yes, it’s fiction. It doesn’t matter; this stuff alienates people, and that’s a fact. But while calling out people who see women exclusively as chainmail bikini stands is important, there’s an equally key flipside to the coin: encouragement. So good on Riot for beginning to take baby steps in the right direction with Sejuani. Her gigantic boar, however, continues to parade about trouser-less, a picture of frolicking filth.

Here’s the basic idea behind the redesign, courtesy of Riot:

“Sejuani’s lightly-armored, skin-flaunting, fleshy apparel didn’t mesh with the idea of a dominating ice warrior. Now heavily armored atop Bristle, this visual rework clearly conveys the core of our concept for the champion. She’s powerful, capable of conquering the Freljord and leading the Winter’s Claw to victory.”

It’s a much appreciated change, but Sejuani’s leap forward doesn’t stop at simple looks. Modified skills have fairly substantially upgraded her range of roles early, mid, and late game. The full list of changes is available for your perusal here, but the general idea was to “add enhanced utility to her skills, allowing her to go head-on as a massive, tanky initiator. With a powerful armor-generating passive, a potent knock-up, AoE damage and slow to go along with a tweaked version of Glacial Prison, the Winter’s Wrath is now even more angry.”

Riot’s in the process of revamping quite a few champions, so it’ll be interesting to see where everyone ends up. Hopefully Sejuani sets the pace, although Karma‘s literal disrobing has me feeling somewhat doubtful. I mean, if nothing else, consistent internal logic is nice, no matter how ridiculous the setting. I don’t want to see everyone up to their eyeballs in parkas (with their eyeballs, in turn, donning smaller parkas of their own), but let me invest in a setting that makes sense for everyone – not just a lucky few.

Actually, it’d be pretty nice if that statement applied to the real world, too. Just saying.

As if there weren’t enough #reasonswhy, recent figures published by Game Developer Magazine have shown that women in the games industry are routinely paid significantly less than men. As spotted by The Border House blog, the numbers show that men are on average paid around 25% more than women for equivalent jobs.

With the exception of programmers, where the ludicrously tiny 4% of positions filled by women show a very slight higher payment than men (less than 5%, and explained as The Border House points out likely by their being paid to retain them), the figures are terrible.

Of artists and animators, the average salary for men is $77,791. For women, $60,238. Because, er, women don’t draw as well? Making up 16% of all positions, women are paid 22% less. Then designers. Male employees average $76.6k, whereas female employees bring in $62k. 11%, making 19% less. For producers, men make an average 8.3% more. In audio, men are making an enormous 65% more. SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT. Even in QA, the 93% of male employees earn 25% more than female. And lastly, there’s business and legal, where the 18% of women are making 24% less than men, seeing their average number at around $82k, compared to men’s at $108k.

There will be factors, certainly. The hugely larger numbers of men in the industry means by nature there will be many more of them who have worked for longer, and thus secured ultimately higher salaries. But there are women who have been involved for a long time too, and this absolutely doesn’t explain away these massive discrepancies.

It’s despicable, and the only valid response is for those in senior positions at publishers and developers to not pretend it isn’t them, to look at their own figures, and to rectify discrepancies.

Sometimes it’s hard being a Juggalo. The media hates you. The band you love is, to many, nothing but a laughing stock. And recently, even the FBI classified your kind as a criminal gang.

When it comes to allowing drones to fly over US soil, Americans are of two minds: embrace domestic drones for such uses as crop dusting, high wire inspection, search and rescue, and border security, or run screaming and seek shelter from the surveillance state in the sky. Those dueling views were on display yesterday during a "public engagement session" hosted online yesterday by the US Federal Aviation Administration to gather input from citizens on the coming swarm.

The two-hour-long livestreamed conference call was open to any member of the US public to participate, providing citizens another opportunity to comment on the agency's newly proposed privacy policy on drones. But it quickly devolved into a massive venting session for and against the FAA's proposed drone privacy policy, and drones themselves. Many callers complained they couldn't even find the draft privacy policy document online.

For the record, the policy is located right here, although it is not readily apparent how to find this link from the FAA's main page. Perhaps the confusion is the agency's use of the moniker "unmanned aerial systems (UAS)," its preferred term for drones, also the one favored by drone industry lobbyists.

"What you're doing here is a sham," said a woman from Prescott, Arizona, to the FAA, frustrated about being unable to locate the policy and what she deemed to be poor advance notice of the call. She said that if the FAA were serious about privacy, "you would not have placed tiny brief in our newspaper and devised this circuitous response scheme," later blasting the FAA's refusal to use the term "drone," to describe the aircraft. "A drone is a drone," she said.

Prescott is among the places around the country where local government officials have submitted applications to an FAA program to test commercial drones at six locations for a variety of uses, from police and agricultural surveillance to weather monitoring to firefighting. The FAA is aiming to finalize the sites by the end of the year, delaying the process by a year from its original timeline. In total, organizations from 37 states have applied, but the FAA hasn't released a list of all the applicants for the new sites. It has, however, published information online on a few of them thanks to Freedom of Information Act requests.

Another woman from a would-be drone test site near Brookesville, Florida, was concerned about potential drone crashes and surveillance in her "tight community." "Drones have crashed in other countries, and we're right in the middle of a populous area," she said, referring to military drones.

But the call brought out staunch drone proponents of these sites and of commercial drones, too. A self-identified lawyer from St. Louis, Missouri, made the (false) assertion that private drone ownership was protected under the US Constitution for the purposes of "self-defense."

"The right to deploy drones in your surrounds to protect yourself is a Constitutional right," the man said. "It will allow us to eliminate weapons of all other sorts." He also noted he was working on a "business model" for a commercial drone fleet that would fly over urban areas at night and monitor them for lights left on so the energy-inefficient buildings could be identified.

"[Drones] will allow us to eliminate weapons of all other sorts."

A representative from the drone lobbying group the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) touted the economic benefits of drones and said "we do not believe the FAA should govern UAS based on privacy concerns."

The FAA didn't answer any questions and didn't participate much in the call at all, except for a brief opening statement by deputy Transportation Department secretary John Porcari. "This is designed to be a forum to allow the FAA to hear form the public on this approach," Porcari said. After that, the call moderators tried to maintain order by giving each caller three minutes to speak their peace, and asked for them to remain polite. Still, many callers vocally shamed one another and the agency itself.

The reason the FAA found itself in this position is due entirely to Congress. In a bill last year, lawmakers specifically mandated that the FAA figure out a way by 2015 to allow drones to fly safely through US airspace higher than 400 feet above ground, the ceiling for model aircraft. The FAA has granted about 1,000 waivers to local agencies to fly drones underneath this height since 2009, but only about 300 are active today. In order to get drones into US airspace at higher altitudes, the FAA first needs to understand how they will communicate with other aircraft, avoid violating people's privacy, and minimize risk to other piloted aircraft and those on the ground.

"[Drones] must operate in accordance with federal, state and other laws" on privacy

The test sites program is designed to do just that, and the current draft privacy policy is supposed to be part of the FAA's legally binding contract with selected test site operators. But as it stands right right now, the privacy policy reads fairly broadly, with only four major points, including such common sense regulations as that the test sites must "operate in accordance with federal, state and other laws regarding the protection of an individual's right to privacy," and that they must "ensure that there are privacy policies governing all activities," on their site.

"My concern is about safety issues."

Many of the callers questioned whether the FAA should be in charge of making privacy policies in the first place, a duty not spelled out in its official operating responsibilities. Instead, many callers — including many private pilots — said that the FAA should focus mainly on the safety issues posed by having drones of all sizes flying through airspace already crowded by manned aircraft.

As one pilot on the call put it: "my concern is about safety issues. How will they regulate or control safety around airports? We should be getting a flight briefing of any UAV activity in the area." The FAA will have to come up with answers to his and the other myriad questions about drones by the time it announces the first six test sites later this year, well before the swarm hits skies in 2015.

DC Comics' popular magic wielder and part-time stage magician Zatanna is making the move from "Justice League Dark" to "Justice League" with July’s Issue 22, and she’ll bring with her a new costume.

Not long after LinkedIn introduced a new, streamlined search tool, it's filled another obvious gap. Starting today, users can start typing a name in updates or comments to see an auto-populated list of connections. Once someone is mentioned in a post, they'll be notified, just as they would be on Facebook or Twitter. While this looks to be mostly for first-degree connections, it's also possible to mention other people by name in comments sections on public posts.

The impetus for this is somewhat obvious: LinkedIn has been working on turning itself from a resume-swapping tool to a more robust social network and news source, leveraging its over 200 million members. While some moves, like its rumored acquisition of Pulse news reader, are indicative of a larger change in direction, adding mentions is basic housekeeping. The feature is set to roll out to US users today, with a global expansion in the near future. Also, while it's currently only available on the Home section of LinkedIn, the company says it may soon start showing up elsewhere as well.

Opera, which only recently decided to replace its own Presto rendering engine for WebKit, has confirmed with TNW that it will be following suit. 'When we announced the move away from Presto, we announced that we are going with the Chromium package, and the forking and name change have little practical influence on the Opera browsers. Howell sponsored the bill in reaction to reading an article on Google Glass and said: "I actually like the idea of the product and I believe it is the future, but last legislature we worked long and hard on a no-texting-and-driving law. It is mostly the young that are the tech-savvy that try new things. They are also our most vulnerable and underskilled drivers. We heard of many crashes caused by texting and driving, most involving our youngest drivers. I see the Google Glass as an extension."

"QUANTUM SHOT" #824 Link - article by Simon Rose and Avi Abrams The Bohemian Realm of Absinthiana Absinthiana are the trappings and accessories associated with the drinking of absinthe. This anise-flavoured spirit is made from the flowers and leaves of wormwood, green anise, sweet fennel and other herbs. Absinthe has a natural green colour and was referred to as the Green Fairy, although it can also be colourless. Absinthe has a high alcohol level and is normally diluted with water for drinking. It’s also very bitter and was often poured into a glass of water over sugar on a perforated spoon. (images via 1, 2, 3) Absinthe was invented in 1797 and by the 1850’s it had become a firm favourite with the upper classes. It was originally a wine-based drink, but the Great French Wine Blight of the mid-19th century destroyed many of the French vineyards. Absinthe was based instead on grain alcohol. This made it more affordable and the Green Fairy became very popular as an alcoholic drink in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the early eighteenth century, absinthe would be served in an ordinary glass, with water added from a standard jug or similar container. With the increasing popularity of absinthe, specialty glassware, elaborate spoons, carafes and fountains made their appearance. (images via 1, 2) Absinthe was said to be both a narcotic and an aphrodisiac. It was adopted by the bohemian culture and Parisian authors and artists claimed that absinthe stimulated creativity. Well-known absinthe drinkers include Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway, Charles Baudelaire and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Just as the modern alcohol industry engages in brand advertising, many absinthe spoons were stamped with brand names or logos as advertising. Spoons were also marketed for the tourism trade. Some of the most famous absinthe spoons were made for the opening of the Eiffel Tower during the Exposition Universelle or World’s Fair held in Paris from May 6 to October 31, 1889. There are many counterfeit versions of these spoons and it can be hard to determine whether or not they are genuine. Usually the real ones from 1889 have the mark of the manufacturer stamped on the spoon. The craftsman added punched in holes reading the date of 1914 and his initials on the handle. The spoon on the right was quite an expensive one in its day, probably being used in fancy restaurants or luxury hotels: (images via) Adding ice-cold water to absinthe causes the liquid to become cloudy, a process known as the “louche” or the ouzo effect in different types of drinks. The adding of the water in exactly the right way was considered almost as an art form. Some establishments had specialists on hand to show new absinthe drinkers how to delicately add the water, one careful drop at a time, from a carafe or pitcher. Here are a few absinthe pitchers. This can be poured slowly into the absinthe through the hole in the mouth. A large glass container with between two and six spigots was suspended above the table. A small group of drinkers could prepare their absinthe all at the same time, with a slow drip of cold water, rather than having to really focus on getting the droplet exactly right when poured from a carafe. The link to the bohemian culture inevitably made absinthe a target for prohibitionists and social conservatives. Here’s another victim of the Green Fairy, in Viktor Oliva’s The Absinthe Drinker, from 1901: (image via) Chronic use of the spirit was said to lead to absinthism, which was widely believed to cause addiction and even hallucinations. Considered to be a leading source of numerous social evils and a general menace to modern society, absinthe was banned in many countries just prior to World War I, including the United States in 1912 and even France itself, the home of absinthe, in 1914. This lead to the popularity in France of other anise-flavoured spirits devoid of wormwood, such as pastis and ouzo. After World War I, the Pernod Fils brand was still produced in Spain, which had not banned absinthe, but production stopped in the 1960s. (images via 1, 2) In Switzerland, absinthe production went underground, with people distilling the drink at home as a colourless drink, which was much easier to keep secret from the powers that be. The fabled Green Fairy had never been banned in the UK and in the 1990s became popular when absinthe was imported from the Czech Republic. Other absinthes were made in Spain and Portugal, although true connoisseurs weren’t impressed, since they felt the modern versions simply weren’t the same as the classic drink from absinthe’s golden era. In 2000, commercial absinthe was finally distilled and bottled in France for the first time since 1914 and there are now numerous different brands to choose from. Aficionados of this method drop some crushed ice in the bottom of the glass, then add the absinthe, before sipping the drink through the glass tube.
