Japanese voiceover pack coming to Tomb Raider PC ... for $30

by JC Fletcher
firehose

nnh

Square Enix charging $30 for Tomb Raider Japanese VO packRather than waiting to localize Tomb Raider into Japanese, Square Enix will sell a Japanese voiceover pack for the Steam version already available in Japan through the Western stores. That part is cool and kind of forward-thinking.

The part that's less cool: the pack costs $30, on top of the full-price purchase of the game. The massive upcharge brings the US Steam version into price parity with the Japanese retail release, which shares an April 25 release date with the VO pack, and retails for ¥7,980 ($80). Yes, video games are always too expensive in Japan. And Square Enix is artificially ensuring that's the case for Tomb Raider.

It's hard to figure out who this Japanese Language Pack is for, if it comes out the same day as the localized PC release for the same effective price. We suppose it's for people in Japan who want to play Tomb Raider now, but don't mind missing out on all the dialogue for a couple of weeks.

Got a question you’d like us and the readers to answer? E-mail us at avcqa@theonion.com.

Now that the news about Jimmy Fallon replacing Jay Leno at The Tonight Show is official, we’re left to speculate about who will take Fallon’s spot on Late Night. The leading contender appears to be Seth Meyers, but the whole thing has us wondering: Who would you choose to replace Jimmy Fallon at Late Night if you were the type of God-person who makes those decisions?

HAVE YOU EVER FUCKING SEEN the Hamburger Helper? That shit is...

HAVE YOU EVER FUCKING SEEN the Hamburger Helper? That shit is terrifying. What’s worse than that? The sodium content. Get off the salt lick and grub on some real food.

Seriously someone in HH marketing should be fired.

TUCSON TEMPEH PASTA

1 block tempeh (~8 oz.)

1 yellow onion

1 bell pepper

2 carrots

3-4 cloves of garlic

1 teaspoon olive oil

2-3 teaspoons soy sauce or tamari

2 tablespoons chili powder

2 teaspoons dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon liquid smoke (It is near the BBQ sauce at the store I swear. You haven’t even looked yet so stop fucking complaining.)

14 ounce can of tomatoes (make sure you don’t buy some brand full of salt)

1 pound of pasta (whole wheat, rice, quinoa, whatever the fuck you want)

juice of 1 lemon

1 cup of green peas or other vegetable

Optional: add some steamed broccoli, spinach, roasted sweet potatoes, whatever you got that you need to use up.

Cook the pasta how the box tells you to. You got this.

Chop up the onion, bell pepper, and carrots. Mince the garlic cloves up nice and small. Heat up the oil over a medium heat in a big skillet or a wok. Crumble the tempeh into little pieces with your hands and toss into the skillet. Add the veggies and cook them until the onion begins to look all golden and the tempeh bits start to brown. Add the soy sauce, spices, and garlic and cook them for about a minute. Your place should smell fucking awesome by now. You’re welcome. Now add the liquid smoke and tomatoes and let the mixture start to bubble a little. Let this all stew together for a minute or two.

Add the cooked pasta, lemon juice, and any additional veggies you picked out to the tomato mixture. Mix everything together until the pasta is nice and coated. Add more spices if you think it needs it. I like to serve mine topped with red onion, jalapenos, and cilantro but you add your favorite shit.

Serves 4-6 people as a meal (or one bad mother fucker with leftovers)

Film: Newswire: The Point Break remake has a director, is still happening

by Sean O'Neal

It’s been nearly two long years since we first learned of plans to remake Point Break—years we’ve spent only living to get radical, secure in knowing that news of its further development would someday roll in like the next tasty, symbolic wave. Today’s that day, with the announcement that Ericson Core, director and No. 1 trainer-recommended abdominal machine, has been hired to bring the film’s “Zen meditation on testosterone-fueled action and manhood” into the 21st century, where both the manhood and the meditation are far more extreme and possibly also involve parkour.

As previously reported, the film will once again find an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring set inside the world of “international extreme sports”—sports that are no longer limited to just surfing, though surfing will remain “very, very prominent,” so as to justify keeping the title. Core’s sole feature directing ...

TV: Newswire: Riff Raff to get even with James Franco for playing Riff Raff by playing James Franco

by Sean O'Neal
firehose

what

Confirming that revenge is a dish best served conceptually, on a papier-mâché plate fashioned out of old Tiger Beat clippings and semen, rapper Riff Raff will get even for James Franco’s alleged theft of his personality on Spring Breakers by, fittingly, playing James Franco. Or rather, “Jamie Franko,” a Miami art dealer who appears on an upcoming episode of One Life To Live, in an obvious mockery of Franco’s own artist character “Franco” on General Hospital. It’s a bit of hall-of-mirrors vengeance that’s been months in the making, ever since Riff Raff began pointing out the similarities between himself and Spring Breakers’ Alien and accusing Franco of lying about the source of his inspiration. Of course, it’s possible James Franco only denied portraying Riff Raff because he knew it would someday lead to Riff Raff playing James Franco. We’ll have to wait for ...

"In my fantasy, I am Daenerys Stormborn Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, and Rightful Heir to the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms. After crossing the Narrow Sea and defeating the forces of Westeros, it is within my power and right to slay all of those who betrayed my family and denied me my rightful place for so many years. Film: Newswire: Scary Movie's David Zucker sees no reason not to reboot The Naked Gun now that he's had all the life sucked out of him

by Sean O'Neal

Director David Zucker all but defined the spoof movie with films like Airplane!, Top Secret, and The Naked Gun, then entered a hilariously meta phase of his career where he began spoofing the inherent emptiness of spoof movies via the Scary Movie franchise. Or, at least, that’s what fans of his earlier work tell themselves. As it turns out, no, Zucker actually tries to make genuine comedy, and in this interview with Hollywood.com, he offers a fascinating glimpse of how your spoof movie sausage gets made: Basically, Bob and Harvey Weinstein see another sausage, then they demand it be ground up into their own sausage, no matter how that might taste.

Confirming most suspicions, Zucker dispassionately describes how every Scary Movie is conceived first by “rounding up all the ideas that must be in the movie, and piecing them together into something watchable”—a backwards approach that means ...

Film: Newswire: Dana Carvey and Mike Myers to end the feud they keep denying they ever had

by Sean O'Neal

For nearly two decades now, Dana Carvey and Mike Myers have been bitterly divided by an ongoing feud—a Wayne’s World war that, like the Battle of the Bulge, also involved funny words for erections. Myers, it was gossiped, had tried to prevent Carvey from tagging along on the movie version of their popular SNL skit, worried he might be upstaged. That jealousy reportedly grew even more intense during actual filming, allegedly leading to Myers trying to minimize Carvey’s role in the sequel. Shortly thereafter, Carvey supposedly expressed indignation over Myers stealing his Lorne Michaels impression for Dr. Evil. Various frustrations were vented. Wigs were probably tossed. Johnny Carson impressions were deployed sarcastically. In other words, it was war.

Of course, said “feud” was primarily characterized by Carvey and Myers’ repeated denials, dating all the way back to 1993, that it ever existed. (Indeed, if the two did ...

Rhode Island considering defaulting on 38 Studios debt

by Samit Sarkar

By Samit Sarkar on Apr 11, 2013 at 6:45p

Rhode Island legislators are considering a proposal that would have the state default on the debt it owes as a result of 38 Studios' collapse last spring, AP reports.

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation gave 38 Studios a $75 million loan in 2010 in an agreement under which the game developer would create 450 jobs over the subsequent three years. But the studio failed to make its first payment on the loan last May, and during the next month laid off its entire staff before declaring bankruptcy.

That left the state of Rhode Island on the hook for approximately $100 million, and Gov. Lincoln Chafee's current budget plans for a $2.5 million payment this year and annual payments of $12.5 million thereafter. Chafee opposes the new proposal because he believes the state should be responsible for its debts. The Economic Development Corporation agrees — according to chief of staff John Pagliarini, defaulting on the debt could harm the state's bond rating and make it more difficult to finance future projects. According to AP, the plan is unlikely to win much support in the state legislature.

But the default proposal does have backers, including state representative Karen MacBeth, who told the state House of Representatives' Finance Committee, "The state of Rhode Island cannot afford to put this burden on the backs of the taxpayers." MacBeth suggests the insurance company that underwrote the loan should pay instead.

Twitter officially buys music discovery site We Are Hunted

by Adi Robertson

great

Twitter has been expanding its reach over the last year, and it's now moving into music: the company has just confirmed that it's acquired the team behind music discovery site We Are Hunted. The move was rumored by CNET last month and bolstered after We Are Hunted was taken offline; now, the team confirms that the site will be shutting down for good. Instead, the team will start working with Twitter on a new, undisclosed project. "We will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team," the site's main page now reads. "There's no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day."

CNET reported in March that Twitter was buying We Are Hunted in order to launch a standalone music streaming app based on the technology; according to sources, it would offer personalized music recommendations and stream music through SoundCloud. Now, the acquisition is a sure thing, but we still can't say with certainty what's coming. For now, neither Twitter nor We Are Hunted has anything to announce. "We wish we could say but we're not yet ready to talk about it," says the We Are Hunted team. "You'll hear more from us when we are."

Update: As TechCrunch has pointed out, we've got at least one hint that a Twitter music app is coming. Ryan Seacrest has posted the following tweet, suggesting that it's in testing now.

““There is a whole new sort of group of individuals now…that never hunt at all,” he said. “But they own guns for one of two reasons — self-protection, or they just like the feel of that AR-15 at the range.” “They like the way it feels,” Biden continued. “It’s like driving a Ferrari, you know. And so my impression is there’s not the same sort of cultural norm about gun ownership with a lot of people who are buying guns now.””

DuckTales Remastered runs on more than nostalgia

by Bob Mackey
firehose

"Game designer Warren Spector's preoccupation with Mickey Mouse ranks up there with some of the more notable wastes of time in recent memory."
ouch

In a new weekly column, writer Bob Mackey will alternate between two of his passions: the Japanese RPG genre and classic games. This week Mackey discusses the recently revealed DuckTales revival.

Game designer Warren Spector's preoccupation with Mickey Mouse ranks up there with some of the more notable wastes of time in recent memory. You can't say Spector didn't have his heart in the right place, though; while much of his love for Disney's mascot seems to be informed largely by his generation's exposure to the character as more than just a soulless corporate brand, both of Junction Point's Epic Mickey games carried forth the noble mission of teaching a new generation about Disney's often-overlooked catalog of animated shorts.

I found myself on board after hearing the premise of Spector's original Epic Mickey, mostly because Disney held nearly all of their shorts hostage on a premium cable channel during my childhood. If I wanted to soak up knowledge about the studio's earlier works, why not do it in Spector-engineered video game form?

According to critics and consumers, the experiment didn't turn out so well. Epic Mickey didn't aspire to greater heights than "competent N64 platformer," and gamers regarded the series as such. Tragically enough, Spector had been sitting on a much better - though not necessarily more popular - property while developing Epic Mickey: Disney's Uncle Scrooge comics, best known to children of the '80s as the animated adaptation DuckTales.

Spector had written for the newly launched DuckTales comic between Epic Mickey installments, and during a PAX Prime 2012 interview, I managed to sneak in a few questions that confirmed his interest in making a game that starred Disney's crankiest curmudgeon. His vague, non-committal statements didn't exactly set the Internet on fire, but they at least gave us all a moment to pause and fantasize about what a modern DuckTales game would look like.

Rockstar recreates Grand Theft Auto radio stations as iTunes and Spotify playlists

by Michael McWhertor

By Michael McWhertor on Apr 11, 2013 at 8:00p

Rockstar Games has made it easier than ever for fans of the Grand Theft Auto series to listen to the tunes that populate the virtual airwaves of the series' radio stations. The developer has replicated the stations from seven games (and two episodes) in the GTA franchise on Spotify and iTunes as playlists.

Playlists built from the many radio stations featured in Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Episodes from Liberty City are available from Rockstar's official website.

Granted, not every song from every radio station in Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City is available on Spotify and iTunes, but Rockstar says it hopes to add songs "within our control where possible soon."

"And for those nostalgic for some of the commercials from these games," the developer says, "be sure to check out The Advertising Council repository if you haven't before — a proper collection of radio adverts from the archives of LC, VC and SA's historical radio dials."

Rockstar's next GTA game, Grand Theft Auto 5, is now dated for Sept.17.

Disappearing legal files lead to computer ban for Pentagon defense lawyers

by Jacob Kastrenakes

A series of mysterious and troubling computer breaches at the Pentagon has led to an order for military and civilian defense lawyers to cease use of their computers when working with sensitive information, reports Reuters. The order came last night following the gradual disappearance of three or four weeks worth of confidential documents, as well as the discovery that 500,000 legal files of varying sensitivity were made accessible to parties not authorized to view them. It's unclear why these events have occurred, but they've all revolved around the legal proceedings of inmates being held at Guantanamo Bay, some of whose cases were about to begin pretrial hearings.

Both the prosecution and defense now want these hearings postponed until this issue can be resolved. Reuters reports that the incidents all involved the defense attorneys' files, many of which are protected by attorney-client privilege. The disappearances began in February, and evidence has been discovered suggesting that third parties had monitored the defense's emails and internet searches. The impact of these security breaches remains to be seen, but there's currently no indication of wrongdoing on the prosecution's part.

There are signs that the defense was monitored

However, Guantanamo's handling of the inappropriate file access has only raised further issues. Reuters reports that the detention camp's legal advisor noted that hidden microphones had been present during private discussions between inmates and their lawyers, but that the conversations — which would be protected by attorney-client privilege — were not monitored. It's not clear what the further developments around the defense's privacy will mean for the inmates legal proceedings, but one hearing has already been pushed back two months, into June.

What's cooler than a million dollars? Winklevoss twins claim to own 1 percent of all Bitcoin

by Carl Franzen

speaking of the Winklevii (this time, not the Onion)

They may not have invented Facebook, but twin tech entrepreneurs Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss — better known to the world as the Winklevoss twins, or Winkelvii — are deep into the next big online trend. The brothers claim to have amassed one of the largest portfolios of Bitcoin in the world, worth around $1.3 million, or about 1 percent of the entire currency's dollar value equivalent, as the New York Times Dealbook reports.

That staggering amount comes in a little less than a year, as the brothers are only reported to have begun "dabbling" in Bitcoin starting last summer. “We have elected to put our money and faith in a mathematical framework that is free of politics and human error,” Tyler Winklevoss told Dealbook. The 31-year-old brothers also seem unfazed by the market's tumult in the past few days: “People say it’s a Ponzi scheme, it’s a bubble,” Cameron said. “People really don’t want to take it seriously. At some point that narrative will shift to ‘virtual currencies are here to stay.’ We’re in the early days.”
