Classic Nude Paintings Remixed With Consenting Camgirls

by Marina Galperina
Classic Nude Paintings Remixed With Consenting Camgirls

“It’s been a lot of explaining,” Vanessa Omoregie told The Guardian when her camgirlsproject first got picked up. “Explaining that I’m not stealing pictures or pulling pictures of girls off random sites. These are real girls who want to contribute to what the project discusses.”

The submission project paired famous paintings of nude muses – Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus (1486), Amedeo Modigliani’s Nudo Sdraiato (1917) and Guerin Pierre Narcisse’s Morpheus and Iris (1811) — with overlaid crops of camgirl-style self-portraits. The project has now ended, but its influence persists, particularly in the theme of agency. Like Addie Wagenknecht and Pablo Garcia‘s Webcam Venus project, camgirlsproject simultaneously addresses the nuances of a posing, self-presenting participant of an online interaction and how provocative bodies have been used in art through history.

What is especially interesting here is Omoregie’s emphases on the agency, the consent, the fully participatory self-evaluation that is happening — all in a fun and aesthetically enjoyable context. Considering the rolling changes in today’s online culture, as the perpetrators of revenge porn and other creepy hijackers of identity are finally being punished for their crimes, it’s nice to see a project focusing on an exchange like this.

Of course, there were some issues with the project, as The Guardian pointed out: “An almost complete reflection of the subject matter of the originals, the modern day nudes are mostly pale, nearly all white, and have stereotypically ‘good’ bodies (skinny, hairless – you know the drill). Omoregie, herself a black woman, is disappointed, although she has herself participated in the project and is proactive in trying to encourage more women to join in: ‘I was hoping that women who are not usually represented by the media would see this as a way to get their voice out there,’ she says.” (Images: camgirlsproject)

Found photos from Kansas City’s 1960s drag scene

Vintage drag is always a treasure, but my excitement over these gorgeous pictures increased exponentially upon learning they come from the Midwest and they were only recently discovered, by total chance. In 2006, an undergrad named Robert Heishman was rummaging through a Kansas City salvage yard in hopes of finding a subject for...

There Is No Real Need For This Robot Kangaroo. I’ll Take Twenty.

by Bea Kaye

Every year German engineering firm Festo develops a new robotic animal to try and learn from nature how to create a more efficient killing machine. Or, to build better industrial robots. Whatever you want to believe, poindexter.

This year it was the robot kangaroo, in order to figure out how kangaroos work because science. (Australian readers, this robot is more of a wallaby, because it’s smaller than a kangaroo, and also it’s more adorable.)

Apparently kangaroos (wallabies) are super good at jumping because they’re magically imbued with demon powers. And that’s how the robot works.

Okay, no it isn’t. Kangaroos have special tendons that recover energy when they’re mid-air, so they can keep jumping without asking coach for a water break. Festo did the same thing using an elastic spring and pneumatic cylinders. This robo-roo weighs 7 kilograms and is a meter high, and can jump 0.4 meters vertically and 0.8 meters horizontally.

In order to jump as far as possible, the kangaroo pulls its legs forward during the flight phase. This creates torque at the hip, for which the artificial animal compensates with a movement of its tail. The top of the body thereby stays almost horizontal.

According to IEEE Spectrum:

Of course, an internal power source is necessary as well, and BionicKangaroo relies on either a small compressor or a storage tank to provide high pressure air for the pneumatic muscles that power the jumping. Lightweight batteries drive everything, and a sophisticated kinematic control system keep the robot from toppling over. Control, as you might have noticed in the video, is gesture-based, via a Thalmic Labs Myo armband.

The Germans are calling it BionicKangaroo? That is just so boring. Robo-roo (Ro-ballaby?) needs a name.

Coming Soon: Juggalo Bitcoin

by Andy Cush
Coming Soon: Juggalo Bitcoin

The image above should really require no explanation, but just in case: the Juggalos, a proud and noble group of facepaint and off-brand soda pop enthusiasts from the midwestern United States, are debuting their own cryptocurrency to compete with the likes of Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and Coinye. The Juggalos behind JuggaloCoin explain why on their website:

1. Keeping funds in the family. The most important thing to understand about Juggalo culture is that it is all about Family and helping each other out. By spending Juggalo Coins, Juggalos can be certain that their money is going to someone who is “down with the clown.”

2. Promoting the positive aspects of the Juggalo lifestyle. Juggalos receive a lot of bad press, and our goal is for Juggalo Coin is to present the message that you shouldn’t believe all the hysteria you may read, and that we are a community standing together to help and support our own. This could actually produce some positive news stories about Juggalos for once.

3. Supporting Juggalo charities. There are already Juggalo-specific charities, and we’re hoping that Juggalo Coin will become the preferred way to donate to them. To facilitate this, we are offering an enormous reward to the first two certified Juggalo Charities that sign up to accept Juggalo Coin. See details in the “bounties” section.

4. Promoting recognition of February 17 as international “Juggalo Day.” The first Juggalo Day was celebrated in 2012, and in a couple of short years it has grown into a huge event featuring special shows by ICP and several days of madness. Of course, we understand that Juggalo Day is probably never going to become an official national holiday. That’s not the goal. The goal is for recognition, in the same way that 4/20 is recognized as a marijuana holiday.

Whoop whoop, ninjas.

The last photo is on my left arm.  A lot of people  miss that it is abstract, and not anatomically correct.

This thursday I am going to have my leg sleeve worked on for the first time in almost 4 years. I am really excited!

Newswire: Johnny Rotten will star in Jesus Christ Superstar with members of ’N Sync and Incubus

by Josh Modell
bernot

OH MY GOD YES

John Lydon, the erstwhile Johnny Rotten of Sex Pistols fame, will play King Herod in a North American touring version of Jesus Christ Superstar, the ’70s Broadway sensation about some awesome singer/King Of The Jews guy. Much like Rotten himself, Jesus Christ Superstar was once seen as subversive and even dangerous, but is now something that your parents can mostly enjoy. Joining Lydon in this touring company will be Brandon Boyd of Incubus (as Judas Iscariot), JC Chasez of ’N Sync (as Pontius Pilate), and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child (as Mary Magdalene). On the scale of strange things that Lydon has done in recent years, this is somewhere near the top, though not quite at the level of that butter commercial he did. The tour will play for 50 shows, and those inclined to believe this is actually happening, and not just some poorly timed April Fool ...

An astute Redditor in Europe came across a lovely painting of a handsome young lady and immediately shared with their internet friends saying, “Found this painting in a museum in Spain, Michael Cera’s Doppelganger.”

Arrested Development fans quickly pointed out that image more accurately depicts what George Michael Bluth and Maeby Fünke’s love child would look like. Here’s a full look at why their love is so forbidden:

“Human Barbie Doll” Is Actually “A Racist Space Alien”

by Marina Galperina
“Human Barbie Doll” Is Actually “A Racist Space Alien”

Just two years ago, as Valeria Lukyanova rose to viral notoriety, the combination of her extreme physical appearance “justified” by New Age-ish rambling seemed almost quirky. Tabloids turned her into a walking world-wide trend piece with an internet army of copycats and fans and a trailer of hate blogs. V Magazine flew the “controversial” and “extraordinary” micro-waisted, giant-breasted, blank-faced girl in from Ukraine for a photo shoot and had her blab about her “spiritual practice.” Vice did a solid video profile, letting the self-dubbed “Amatue” — the self-professed alien who communicates with the 22nd dimension through dreams and visions – go all out with cheesy special effects, then let her crazed posing and neuroticism bleed hilariously through. And now, GQ just published the definitive Lukyanova profile by Michael Idov (of the Pussy Riot prison interview).

I realize that just like everyone reading about Human Barbie, I had had a simple narrative prepared in my head: A small-town girl grows up obsessed with dolls, etc. Instead, I get a racist space alien.

His first Amatue encounter went “from nails to eugenics in about two minutes flat.”

When seated across the table from a living Barbie and stuck for topics, by all means go for collegiate bullshit. “But Amatue seems to be all about the Eastern philosophy of reincarnation,” I say. “And the beauty that you embody is very Western. American, even.”

Valeria grows pensive, which in her case means rolling her eyes slightly upward without changing anything else about her face. “I wouldn’t say so. Everyone wants a slim figure. Everyone gets breasts done. Everyone fixes up their face if it’s not ideal, you know? Everyone strives for the golden mean. It’s global now.”

“But that’s a relatively new thing,” I reply. “The ideal of beauty used to be different.”

“That’s because of the race-mixing.”

Initially, Idov’s reaction to the “real” Amatue (and every detail of her particular brand of extreme artificiality) seems almost a tinge harsh, until Amatue starts cracking trans jokes, poo-poo’ing feminism and going on about her little theory on the “degeneration” of white beauty.

“For example, a Russian marries an Armenian,” Valeria elaborates helpfully. “They have a kid, a cute girl, but she has her dad’s nose. She goes and files it down a little, and it’s all good. Ethnicities are mixing now, so there’s degeneration, and it didn’t used to be like that. Remember how many beautiful women there were in the 1950s and 1960s, without any surgery? And now, thanks to degeneration, we have this. I love the Nordic image myself. I have white skin; I am a Nordic type—perhaps a little Eastern Baltic, but closer to Nordic.”

What’s next for Lukyanova?

“The next step is to cut off Ukraine entirely, because all I get here is shit. Why waste myself on this?”

Lesbian-Only Cemetery To Open In Berlin

by Matt Staggs

Safia, an organization for older lesbians, is creating a final resting place for the women of their community.

Via Raw Story

The burial ground is part of the 200-year-old Georgen Parochial cemetery in Prenzlauer Berg, a district in the east of the once-divided city near Alexanderplatz square.

“The idea emerged four years ago in the lesbian group Safia, whose members, advancing in age, asked themselves where they want to be buried,” said Osterland, 69.

“We wanted to stay together, to be close to those with whom we lived, we loved, we worked, we fought,” she told AFP, adding that she has already reserved a burial plot for herself.

The 400-square-metre (4,300-square-feet) section of the cemetery, newly landscaped with a winding sand path, has space for 80 bodies or urns containing cremated ashes.

“We had surveyed several cemeteries, but we decided on this one because we knew it and we knew it was beautiful,” Osterland said about he project, financed by the women’s housing association Sappho.

Buffalo’s Mighty Taco Has Gone Ahead And Banned Vladimir Putin From All Of Their Restaurants

Vladimir Putin has been through a lot recently, including a divorce and a lot of weird business involving the Ukraine. If there’s one thing the guy could use in a time of stress, it’s a delicious taco.

But not so fast, Vlad. Don’t come looking for any tacos from Mighty Taco in Buffalo, NY because you’re not welcome. You’ve been banned. From Huffington Post:

Mighty Taco, a Buffalo-based chain of Mexican fast-foot restaurants, has banned Russian President Vladimir Putin from all of the company’s 23 locations in western New York.

The company known for its quirky ads announced on social media this week that effective immediately, Putin is banned from Mighty Taco for seizing Crimea from Ukraine. Mighty Taco’s posting says Putin may be ordering around Crimea, but he won’t be ordering a Super Mighty, one of the chain’s most popular menu items.

This could very well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for Putin. He might be able to survive sanctions from western nations and public condemnation of his actions, but there’s little he can do against taco based warfare.

You might remember how Taco Bell came out on top during the Franchise Wars, showing the taco’s strength and resolve. This might be the fight of your life Putin.

Everyone’s favourite giant penises will be popping out again at this year’s festival of phalluses

by Cara Clegg

willy2

It’s that time of year again! Spring is in the air, the cherry blossoms are blooming, and everyone’s feeling a little bit randy. What better way to celebrate life than with the Kanamara Matsuri, better known as the Penis Festival, to be held on April 6th from 11am to 6pm.

The phallic festivities take place around Kanayama Shrine, located in a place called Wakamiyahachimanguu in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. While it might seem like one of those zany new ‘Cool Japan’ things, this bizarre festival has actually been held since the Edo period in honor of Kanamara, the god of…blacksmithing?

Kanamara originally seems to have been a patron of the smiths, but at some point along the way moved over into sex-related work and became busy answering prayers for prosperity in business, fertility, easy childbirth, marriage, protection from venereal disease, and harmony between husband and wife. In recent times the festival has also become a popular event for AIDS-prevention awareness.

The highlight of the event is the portable shrine, or mikoshi, procession. There are three main shrines paraded around town on peoples’ shoulders as onlookers chant excitedly.

▼ First up is the Kanamara Boat Mikoshi, with its huge iron rod.

willy3

▼ Next comes the Elizabeth Mikoshi, the luridly pink and proud shaft.

willy1

▼ And last but not least is the ancient Kanamara Big Mikoshi, which doesn’t quite measure up to the others and looks like a tree trunk with an oddly shaped protrusion. But remember, it’s not how big it is…

willy20

▼ As well as feasting your eyes on more peen than you can probably handle, you can also get your hands and lips on some edible phalluses.

willy5

▼ Even the vegetables are penis-shaped today.

willy10

▼ It’s all good, clean fun.

willy15

▼ Blast off!

willy17

▼ Probably the only day of the year it’s acceptable to stand around in public with your wang in your hand.

willy11

Let us know if you’re lucky enough to be attending this year! Weird photo opportunities don’t get much better than this.

Mentally Unfit

by Zachary McDermott

Mentally Unfit

When the police found me I was standing on a subway platform, somewhere in Brooklyn, barefoot, wearing only soccer shorts in October, and crying. My hands were folded behind my head like a captured soldier. For the previous 12 hours I had wandered the streets of New York, convinced that I was being videotaped, Truman Show-style, by hidden cameras. I made my living as a public defender in Brooklyn, but I did standup at night. I'd recently met with a network executive to discuss a pilot for a reality show based on my act; now I thought the city was my set.
