Scientists have 3D printed the most advanced artificial cornea ever using human cells

by Rachel Becker

Scientists have 3D printed the thin protective film over the eye, called the cornea, using human cells — and it’s the most advanced version of an artificial cornea yet. Should the technology improve, it could help millions of people see again.

It was tricky to find the right recipe for an ink that’s thin enough to squirt through a 3D printer’s nozzle, says Che Connon, a tissue engineer at Newcastle University who was one of the creators of the artificial cornea. This bio-ink didn’t just have to be thin — it also had to be stiff enough that it could hold its shape as a 3D structure. To get the right consistency, the researchers added a jelly-like goo called alginate and stem cells extracted from donor corneas, along with some ropy...

Diver Captures Rare Footage of Orca Deftly Using Tail to Stun Stingray

by twistedsifter

Jorge Cervera Hauser captures a rare and spectacular moment as an orca whale uses its tail to stun a stingray.

You can read the full story of this amazing encounter with divers aboard Pelagic Fleet’s Solmar V at Dive Photo Guide.

For nearly 7 years Jorge Hauser has boarded a plane to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula twice per month in hopes of swimming with a pod of orca whales. Finally, he not only realized his dream but got more than he could have ever bargained for.

Bored Commuters Can Ride This Bike and Knit a Scarf With 5 Minutes of Cycling

by twistedsifter

cyclo knitter by george barratt jones 1 Bored Commuters Can Ride This Bike and Knit a Scarf With 5 Minutes of Cycling

Cyclo Knitter is a project by design student George Barratt-Jones. The goal? To make waiting for your train in the winter more enjoyable by making a human-powered machine that creates scarfs in 5 minutes. George adds:

“Imagine Its the midst of winter. You are cold and bored waiting for your train at the station. This pedal powered machine gets you warm by moving, you are making something while you wait and in the end you are left with a free scarf! That you can decide to keep yourself or give to someone who needs it more.”

Below you can find a video of the Cyclo Knitter in action along with a gallery detailing the making of the machine.

Started with an assignment to make something with a weaving technique for the Design Academy Eindhoven. I like making projects that are useful and make people smile. So I decided on making waiting for your train in the winter more enjoyable.

Why emergency braking systems sometimes hit parked cars and lane dividers

by Timothy B. Lee

The National Transportation Safety Board on Thursday provided new details about a March crash in Mountain View, California, that claimed the life of engineer Walter Huang. The Model X had its Autopilot driver assistance system engaged, and, according to the NTSB, the car "began a left steering movement" seven seconds before the crash that put it on a collision course with a concrete lane divider. Then, in the last three seconds before the crash, "the Tesla’s speed increased from 62mph to 70.8mph, with no precrash braking or evasive steering movement detected."

This isn't the only recent case where Autopilot steered a Tesla vehicle directly into a stationary object—though thankfully the others didn't get anyone killed. Back in January, firefighters in Culver City, California, said that a Tesla with Autopilot engaged had plowed into the back of a fire truck at 65mph. In an eerily similar incident last month, a Tesla Model S with Autopilot active crashed into a fire truck at 60mph in the suburbs of Salt Lake City.

A natural reaction to these incidents is to assume that there must be something seriously wrong with Tesla's Autopilot system. After all, you might expect that avoiding collisions with large, stationary objects like fire engines and concrete lane dividers would be one of the most basic functions of a car's automatic emergency braking technology.

This Artist Keeps the Most Beautiful Sketchbooks I Have Ever Seen

by twistedsifter

Artist José Naranja is a self-professed notebook maker and his incredible sketchbooks have earned him a passionate following online.

A former aeronautic engineer, Naranja’s sketchbook adventures began in 2005 when he purchased his first pocket-sized Moleskine. Since then he’s been using the books to write, sketch, collage and remember his daily experiences while travelling or just living everyday life.

These days, José now makes his own sketchbooks, a bookbinding process that he has laid out how to do yourself on his blog.

He’s also compiled his favorite works into a ‘best of’ sketchbook called ‘The Orange Manuscript‘ which is available for sale on his website.

For more, check out José’s work at the links below.
