Production Methods: CNC Wire Machines Can Cut Crazy Shapes Out of Stone

0cncwirestone-001.jpg

After reading our entry on multi-bladed jigsaws, Art Director and Coroflotter Juan Cano tipped us off to a similar machine, this one used to cut stone. By swapping out jigsaw blades for diamond-crusted wires, and switching the axis of cut from vertical to horizontal, the massive GoldBreton 2000 Multi-Wire Machine can cut massive chunks of granite into neat slabs.

0cncwirestone-002.jpg

0cncwirestone-003.jpg

That was cool enough, but it turns out Breton makes more machines than the relatively basic 2000. By attaching a cutting wire to pulleys that can swivel, then mounting those pulleys on arms that can move, they've created some very bad-ass CNC stone-cutting machines, like this two-axis model:

Philips Figures Out How to Make a Cheaper LED Bulb: Go Skinny

0philipsslimstyle-001.jpg

In design school in the '90s, they taught us that products about to become obsolete change their form factor to imitate their successors shortly before dying out. In other words, the lesson went, landline telephones would start to look like cell phones in a desperate attempt to stay relevant, and then they would disappear.

Twenty years later, we see an almost opposite phenomenon with LED bulbs, which have oddly tried to mimic the physical appearance, in broad strokes, of the incandescent bulb. But finally Philips has realized this is silly—and expensive, as LEDs occupying a lightbulb-sized volume require pricey heat sinks. Thus they've designed these cool, new SlimStyle LED bulbs.

0philipsslimstyle-002.jpg

They've got the efficiency you've come to expect from LEDs—a 60-watt equivalency wrung from just 10.5 watts—and because they're so skinny, and made from plastic rather than glass, the bulky heat sink can go away. That's good news for consumers' wallets, as the price-per-bulb has finally dropped below the $10 threshold. And yep, they're dimmable.

This machine can sequence your DNA for just $1,000

by Daniel Cooper
Even a decade ago, sequencing a genetic code would set you back around $250,000. The target, of course, has been to crunch that figure down to a more reasonable sum, and now a company believes that it can do it for just $1,000 a go. Illumina Inc. has ...

Just a cursory glance at a few storm photos by Mike Hollingshead and it’s clear this guy has probably seen it all, and probably put his life at risk to do so. The intrepid storm chaser has been enduring foul weather since the late 90s, clocking some 20,000 miles a year in his car as he stalks thunderstorms and other extreme weather occurrences waiting to capture the perfect shot. Hollingshead shares his story with Jakob Schiller over at Raw File, and you can see hundreds of his photos, many available for purchase as prints, over on his website. All images courtesy the artist. Beginning about 2,000 years ago, the unique cultural tradition La Vijanera is held on the first Sunday of every year. It’s an annual masquerade festival celebrated in Cantabria, Spain, where costumed characters embody symbolic roles in folkloric acts to welcome the new year and review the passing year.

The Backyard Falcon

by nobody@flickr.com (Avanaut)

Avanaut posted a photo:

The Backyard Falcon

Many people have asked me how do I do these spaceship photographs. My answer is this: I take a camera and I photograph what I see. This is on our backyard in April 2013.

No, I wish it was that simple. This is a shot that I did not know how to process at the time I shot it and I abandoned it. I found it this weekend but I could not find the RAW format originals anymore, I guess I tossed them in frustration. So, I thought it might be a good idea to try to salvage this using what I had. And bingo! I realized what I'd done wrong almost a year ago, and after that epiphany this was not that difficult a composite anymore.

The lesson we learn from this: never throw out anything, buy more memory instead.

Influenced by the work of Cédric Delsaux.

I'm also in FB and Twitter if you're into that sorta thing.

Making Music with a Bike

by Christopher Jobson

Making Music with a Bike music video bicycles

Composer Johnnyrandom just released a new track recorded entirely by sampling sounds from a bicycle and its related components. Titled Bespoken, the track was created without the aid of synthesizers, samplers or drum machines (if you’re skeptical he even provided every sound broken down into component parts over on SoundCloud). The video above is just a teaser, but you can downloaded the whole thing off iTunes and it’s actually pretty great. If you’re a fan of ambient/electronic music it’ll be up your alley. If you liked this, also check out the work of Diego Stocco.

Update: A number of you wrote to mention Frank Zappa’s famous bit from the Steve Allen show where he makes music live on stage using a bicycle bsck in 1963.

Our #TwitterTuesday’s hero Green is the color of growing grass and leaves, of emeralds, and of jade. In the continuum of colors of visible light, it is located between yellow and blue. It is most commonly associated with nature, the environmental movement, Ireland, Islam, spring, hope and envy, according to Wikipedia. Here’s the selection of some of our favorites.

We thank everyone who submitted a photo. You can check out all of them and follow us on Twitter to see the next challenge directly in your feed. We will be back next Tuesday with the new #TwitterTuesday theme.
