WATCH: rise of the super drug tunnels: California's losing fight against smugglers
Joe Garcia is a deputy special agent with the Department of Homeland Security and head of the San Diego Tunnel Task Force. His task force has found over 200 tunnels under the California-Mexico border since 1990. But every time they close a tunnel, smugglers build a new, better tunnel. "You can't fight markets," says David Shirk, associate professor of international relations and director of the Justice in Mexico project at the University of San Diego.

In Soviet Russia, Accent Speaks You
(The phone rings.)
Cashier: “Hello, [Name] Pizza… Oh, f***, not again.”
(She hangs up. A few customers come and go, and the phone rings again.)
Cashier: “Hello, [Name] Piz— f*** this!”
Customer: “Hey, lady, problem with the phone?”
Cashier: “Some sicko keeps calling from a blocked number and making creepy comments.”
Customer: “Hang on. I gotta go find my friend.”
(He pays and leaves… and comes back with a 6’8″ NYPD cop.)
Cop: *with a minor Russian accent* “I hear you’re having a problem with a caller?”
Customer: “No, no. Do the accent! Make it f***in’ scary!”
Cop: *in a deeper voice with a thick accent* “Excuse me. I hear you have problem with caller?”
(The cashier explains. The cop orders a slice of pizza and he and his friend sit and chat for a few minutes. Then the phone rings.)
Cashier: “It’s a blocked number!”
Cop: *on the phone, with the accent* “Hello…. You are thinking my body is what? I am thinking your body probably very fragile. Very easy to— Oh, he hung up.”
(They stare at the phone a few minutes.)
Customer: “Problem solved?”
Cashier: *to customer* “So… is your buddy there single?”
Cop: *in accent* “Boris have many women. All are love him!”
Customer: “You’re married and your name isn’t Boris!”
Cop: “Boris is name of accent. Has life of its own.”

Toilet Paper Rolls Squished into Funny Faces by Junior Fritz Jacquet
French paper artist Junior Fritz Jacquet created this fantastic series of weird masks made from toilet paper rolls. Inspired by the craft of origami, each mask is made from a single paper roll which is folded and squished into an expressive face. The pieces are then finished with a coat of shellac and different pigments. These masks are just one small facet of Jacquet’s artwork, you can see more of his functional paper lights and other paper creations over on Facebook. Photos here by Matthieu Gauchet. Dry Western U.S. May Not Get Help From El Niño, Forecasters Say
Dry Western U.S. May Not Get Help From El Niño, Forecasters Say
A NOAA map shows the forecast for sea-surface temperatures for the months of December-February, 2014-2015. Climatologists say there's a 65 percent chance of an El Nino forming.
The chances that an El Niño weather pattern will bring much-needed rains to parched areas of the West have fallen from 80 percent to 65 percent, according to a new analysis by weather experts. They add that if the warm-water system does appear, it would likely be a weak one.
Some Californians had been hoping that El Niño would break the state out of a three-year drought. But as member station KQED reports, government climatologist Bill Patzert says of the prospect of a strong El Niño this fall and winter, "It's a flop."
He added, "That El Niño that was really coming on like gangbusters in the spring has virtually disappeared at this point. Unless we see a miraculous resurgence, any hope for an El Niño soaking this winter is pretty much in the rearview mirror."
On the positive side, forecasters see even less of a chance that El Niño's opposite number — La Niña, which would bring more dryness — will form. And the West Coast could also get some help from Pacific storms, they say, if a high-pressure system stays out of the way.
"We could have one wet, cold storm after another making its way down the length of California," Patzert says, "and that would certainly be sweet."
From a statement issued Thursday by NOAA's Climate Prediction Center:
"A strong El Niño is not favored in any of the ensemble averages, and slightly more models call for a weak event rather than a moderate event. At this time, the consensus of forecasters expects El Niño to emerge during August-October and to peak at weak strength during the late fall and early winter (3-month values of the Niño-3.4 index between 0.5°C and 0.9°C). The chance of El Niño has decreased to about 65% during the Northern Hemisphere fall and early winter (click CPC/IRI consensus forecast for the chance of each outcome)."
Sand-sational Creations
Celebrate Play in the Sand Day by enjoying these skillful sand creations. There are sand sculpture competitions all over the world, but you don’t need to be a professional to give it a try!
It’s hard to say exactly when sand sculpting originated but there is conjecture that even the ancient Egyptians made sand models of the pyramids.
The Australian Sand Sculpting team opened their largest exhibit yet, called “Story Land,” which ran this year and featured hand-crafted sculptures from classic and modern stories.
The tallest sandcastle was made in October 2013 in Point Pleasant, NJ commemorating the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy by artist Ed Jarrett, who has broken the Guiness World Record for the tallest sandcastle four times. This latest creation was 38 feet, two inches tall.
Not all sand is created equal. Experts recommend using fine sand to create sculptures. Dig an inch or two below the surface to find the ideal grains.
Drip Sandcastles, like the creation shown here, are made by mixing sand with water then dribbling the mixture onto existing structures by hand.
Going to the beach and building sand sculptures is a fun activity for all ages. Have a blast creating your favorite animal, building, or design!

Cooper GriggsJohnny 5 is ALIVE!
Here’s few fun pieces by UK street artist JPS who creates small and lage-scale stencil works, paintings, and installations in urban areas. While most of his work seems greatly influenced by pop culture icons, horror movie characters, and comic book heroes, I tend to enjoy these one-off pieces a bit more. You can see more over on his Facebook page.
