Weekly update: June 24-30

image

Good news everyone. It looks like we can finally show some result of what we have been doing for the last couple of months, namely our mobile API. We have been running it on our test server for a week, gathered some initial feedback from several awesome mobile developers, and we think it’s now ready to be tested by the general public.

What does it mean to you? It means that there is now technical possibility to use The Old Reader with your favorite RSS app.

You can already try The Old Reader in Feeddler – free version already supports it, and the Pro version should get updated any time soon. Kudos to Che-Bin Liu for being extremely helpful in testing the API and getting Feeddler integrated so fast.

The documentation for the API is available in a separate github repo. It’s not the best piece of docs we’ve ever seen, but it seems to cover the basic use cases. You are welcome to improve it, just send us a pull request with your adjustments. Please note that even though you can use API both via http and https, we highly encourage you to use https for security reasons.

If you find any bugs or feel that something is not working as expected, please feel free to create a github issue or contact us at api@theoldreader.com.

And last, but not least, spread the word. Let the developer of your favorite RSS app know about The Old Reader API, and ask them to get integrated. We would really like to see more and more apps working with the site bringing native mobile experience to the users of all platforms.

Some of Japan's Cutest and Most Amusing Twitter Pics

Twitter doesn't only inform at 140 characters a tweet, but it also amuses and delights with pictures. Here's a look at some, certainly not all, of Japan's most adorable, entertaining, and interesting photos found on Twitter.

As with these things, be aware that people in Japan also find these images unusual—hence, them being retweeted numerous times. Many of them were retweeted thousands of times.

Some of the photos are riffs one well-known memes, while others (such as the top image) can be easily explained(it's Halloween). And many of the photos are just people screwing around. You know, hijinks.

Then, there are simply the surprising sights people have encountered and shared online.

Map the iPhone Users In Any City, And You Know Where the Rich Live

by Emily Badger

Our stuff often says a lot about us, whether we own a hybrid car or a station wagon, a MacBook Pro or an ancient desktop. And this is no less true of our smart phones, sold on a sharply divided market between iPhones, Androids, and Blackberries.

Among other things, cell phone brands say something about socio-economics – it takes a lot of money to buy a new iPhone 5 (and even more money to keep up with the latest models that come out faster than plan upgrades do). Consider, then, this map of Washington, D.C., which uses geolocated tweets, and the cell phone metadata attached to them, to illustrate who in town is using iPhones (red dots) and who's using Androids (green dots):

That picture comes from a new series of navigable maps visualizing some three billion global, geotagged tweets sent since September of 2011, developed by Gnip, MapBox and dataviz guru Eric Fischer.* They've converted all of that data from the Twitter firehose (this is just a small fraction of all tweets, most of which have no geolocation data) into a series of maps illustrating worldwide patterns in language and device use, as well as between people who appear to be tourists and locals in any given city.

The locals and tourists map scales up a beautiful earlier project from Fischer. You could kill a few hours playing with all of these tools, built on the same dataset. But we particularly liked looking at the geography of smart phone devices. As in Washington, above, iPhones are often more prominent in upper-income parts of cities (and central business districts), while Androids appear to be the dominant device in lower-income areas.

These maps are also a blank canvas with nothing on them other than tweets. To the extent that you can easily make out the Washington Beltway above, or plenty of other roadway networks throughout the rest of these maps, that means people are tweeting while driving (or, preferably, sitting in the passenger seat).

Here is New York City, which has a smattering of Blackberries in Manhattan (yes, it's possible to tweet from a Blackberry). That green patch to the left is Newark:

Here is Chicago:

And Houston:

Atlanta:

Los Angeles:

And one place that really loves Blackberries? Jakarta.

Correction: This article initially misspelled Eric Fischer's name.

Happy Birthday, Baby—The 65th anniversary of computer software

by Sean Gallagher
A replica of the Manchester SSEM, aka "Baby"—now at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, England.

On June 21, 1948, at what was then known as the Victoria University of Manchester, software was born. On that day 65 years ago, a proof-of-concept computer called "Baby"—officially designated as the Manchester Small Scale Experimental Machine—ran the first "program" retrieved not from paper tape or hard-set switches, but from random-access memory.

Designed by Frederic C. Williams, Tom Kilburn, and Geoff Tootil, Baby wasn't the first programmable computer. But the technology proven in Baby, with its 1,024 bits of cathode-tube based RAM, would become the basis of the first commercial computers.

In celebration of Baby's birthday, here's a look back at the first decade of computing and the computers that led to the birth of software and the computing revolution that would follow.

Animal Crossing's Smash Bros. Crossover: Food For Thought

by Luke Plunkett

Animal Crossing's Smash Bros. Crossover: Food For Thought

After the PS4 beatdown, the next-biggest thing amongst internet gif makers last week was the announcement of the Animal Crossing villager for the new Smash Bros. game.

He was portrayed as everything from a psycho to a...psycho, something which may have made you laugh, but did anyone think of his feelings? He's just a kid, working hard to pay off his mortgage, sending letters to his mum, and you turned him into a monster.

A trip through gaming history: the Videogame History Museum at E3

by Andrew Cunningham

The bulk of any Electronic Entertainment Expo is spent paying attention to the new—the upcoming games, all-new or redesigned consoles, and new services (or policies) that will soon change the way you play.

Tucked away in a corner of the south convention hall, though, is the antithesis of E3. It's an assemblage of old arcade cabinets, classic consoles hooked to standard-definition TVs, and gaming curios that you may never have heard of let alone seen. It's an exhibition of hardware, software, and collectibles put together by the Videogame History Museum. Even if the next big high-definition shooter games hold no appeal for you, you'll get a kick out of all the great stuff they've gathered together here. Take a look at just a small subsection of what they had at the show.

Sit for a spell

Large portions of the Videogame History Museum's sprawling booth were dedicated to playable old-school console games. The authenticity of that horrible 70s couch is impressive.

Here’s a sad picture of Real Madrid’s unused Copa del Rey champions bus

by Brooks Peck

Real Madrid were understandably confident going into Friday's Copa del Rey final. Atletico Madrid had not beaten them in over a decade and Jose Mourinho had to win in order to avoid the first season of his top-flight career without a trophy. But then Mourinho was sent off. And so was Cristiano Ronaldo. And Atletico ended up winning the Copa del Rey in extra time.

As a result, Real Madrid didn't get to use their customized open-topped bus, which was spotted in the city on its lonely trip back to the garage.

Atletico did use their bus as they paraded through the streets on Friday, though. Here it is in all its glory...

Microsoft may award achievements for watching TV and ads by monitoring you with Kinect

by T.C. Sottek
Abdulaziz Alhamidi

Oh, wow...

Microsoft_patent_large

A patent application filed in 2011 has revealed that Microsoft may plan on bringing achievements to TV watching — including use of its Kinect camera system to monitor the behavior of TV viewers. As an application, the patent doesn't provide any definitive evidence that Microsoft plans to bring TV achievements or viewer monitoring to the Xbox 360 or the Xbox One, but it's an example of where the company's thinking could be headed as it expands its focus on the living room television experience.

Microsoft has already used Kinect to let viewers interact with ads; the company unveiled its NUads program more than a year ago, which is designed to use the sensor to let users share ads on social networks or control other aspects of advertisements. Responding to privacy concerns over NUads, Microsoft told The Verge that it has "strict policies in place that prohibit the collection, storage, or use of Kinect data for the purpose of advertising."

In the application, Microsoft notes that "traditional television viewing experiences tend to be passive and do not frequently provide opportunities for a viewer to engage with programming." Microsoft presumably thinks that adding achievements for TV watching is a way to increase engagement — specifically mentioning the value this could provide for advertisers. "To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content," Microsoft writes.

Harnessing Kinect to detect how you watch TV isn't far-fetched

"Producers, distributors, and advertisers of the video content may set viewing goals and award a viewer who has reached the goals," the application notes. Those awards could include anything from digital gifts, like a score or some flair for your avatar, or promotional rewards from third-parties, like coupons or products.

Microsoft's examples include achievements or awards that could be offered for watching an entire television series from start to finish, for watching enough commercials during a program, or for "an action performable by the viewer." How Microsoft thinks it can achieve the last bit is the most interesting, because it would require monitoring TV watchers as they sit on the couch — something the company is poised to possibly implement with the Xbox One, which will ship with a Kinect camera.

We already know that the Kinect can be configured to monitor motion, depth, and audio data in its range — indeed, the peripheral will even listen to you while it's turned off — so harnessing its capabilities to detect how you watch TV isn't far-fetched. (As Microsoft demonstrated to us this month, the new Kinect will even be able to know when you're looking at or away from the screen.) The patent application states that the system "may be configured to track the viewing behaviors of one or more viewers," and "may then compile one or more user-specific reports of the viewing behaviors."

There's no guarantee Microsoft will actually implement the details of the patent, but it wouldn't come as a huge surprise. The company focused heavily on the Xbox One's television capabilities during its reveal event this month, with a heavy emphasis on voice and motion control integration with the TV watching experience. We've asked the company to comment on its plans, but so far Microsoft has been tight-lipped about the biggest mysteries surrounding its newest console.

Mario Mandzukic’s Champions League winner’s medal fell off, was saved by Franck Ribery

by Brooks Peck
Abdulaziz Alhamidi

Quite funny, lol.

As soon as Bayern Munich lifted the Champions League trophy after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1, striker Mario Mandzukic, who scored his side's first goal of the night, lost his winner's medal. After going up the steps at Wembley collect their medals and trophy, Mandzukic couldn't help but jubilantly bounce around. But as soon as Bastian Schweinsteiger lifted the cup, Mandzukic's medal popped off its necklace.

The striker was too happy to notice it was gone, but Franck Ribery saw it drop down into the stands below them. Ribery alerted Mandzukic to the missing medal and Mandzukic responded with a look of surprise and confusion.

Here's the video...

Ribery somehow managed to catch the medal before it fell down to the lower level, though. And he put it back where it belonged. Though the match included some amazing saves, that might have been the save of the day.

Xbox One Q&A

by Endless

Xbox One: Your Top Questions Answered
Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?

A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Q: How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?

A: The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible. Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud:

    • Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences.

    • Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates.

    • Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One. • Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another.

    • You can play multiplayer games with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the community and social features of Xbox Live.

    • Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you.

You can discover what your friends are playing, watching and listening to if they choose to share. These are just a few examples of how customers benefit from our platform being connected to the Internet. It brings the future of TV and games to our consumers—and it’s designed for today and the decade ahead.

Q: When will Xbox One launch and in what markets?

A: Xbox One will launch in markets around the world later this year. We’ll have more to share later.

Q: Can I use my current gamertag on Xbox One and will my Gamerscore and Achievements transfer?

A: Yes. Your current Xbox Live Gamertag will stay with you on Xbox One if you choose to keep it, and your hard-earned Gamerscore and Achievements will indeed carry over from Xbox 360.

Q: Will Xbox One be backward compatible with my existing games?

A: Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games. We designed Xbox One to play an entirely new generation of games—games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud. We care very much about the investment you have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future.

Q: Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?

A: We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

Q: Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?

A: You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Q: Why require Kinect with every Xbox One?

A: The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you.

Q: Do I need to have a specific cable or satellite TV provider to watch live TV on Xbox?

A: Our goal is to enable live TV through Xbox One in every way that it is delivered throughout the world, whether that’s television service providers, over the air or over the Internet, or HDMI-in via a set top box (as is the case with many providers in the US). The delivery of TV is complex and we are working through the many technologies and policies around the world to make live TV available where Xbox One is available.

Q: Xbox One is a more powerful product compared to Xbox 360, but does it also use more power?

A: No. By providing multiple power states in Xbox One, we’ve balanced energy efficiency with functionality. We’ve taken a completely different approach to how Xbox One consumes power. It only uses the power it needs at that particular moment for the task at hand.

Stop Signs Projected onto Water Curtains

by John Farrier

water curtain

Many tunnels in Sydney, Australia aren't tall enough to permit tractor trailers to move through safely. This animated gif shows a warning system that informs truck drivers when they're about to crash into a tunnel entrance. When sensors detect a vehicle that is too tall, the system pours water across the entrance to the tunnel and projects a stop sign onto that water curtain.

Man dribbling a ball from Seattle to Brazil for 2014 World Cup hit by car and killed in Oregon

by Brooks Peck

A man attempting to dribble a ball from Seattle to Sao Paulo, Brazil in time for the 2014 World Cup was hit by a car and killed in Lincoln City, Oregon just 14 days into his journey. Richard Swanson, a 42-year-old Seattle Sounders fan, began his trip on May 1 and planned visit 11 countries during his year-long adventure. He maintained a website dedicated to the experience at breakawaybrazil.com. Sadly, he didn't make it very far.

From The News Guard:

According to police, Swanson was walking south along the south bound shoulder of Highway 101 near the south city limits of Lincoln City. Swanson was struck from behind by a 1995 Nissan pickup operated by Scott Van Hiatt, 52, of Neskowin. Mr. Hiatt remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation.

Medics from Pacific West Ambulance transported Swanson to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, where Swanson was declared deceased.

According to The Oregonian, the blue ball pictured right was found with him.

In a video introduction on his website, Swanson said he was a father of two adult sons and lost his job as a graphic designer last year. Unable to find work, he decided to carry out his dream of going to the World Cup, but since he had no income, he decided to walk. "Screw what happens, I don't even care," Swanson said of the plan. "As crazy as the idea sounds, that idea spurred on to the next leg of 'Well, since I'm going to the World Cup, I should honor it by dribbling a soccer ball.' Which even makes the trip even more crazy."

Swanson initially dismissed the idea as "lunacy," but later decided that "It felt natural. It felt like I was doing what I should be doing. That this was the next leg of my life." He sold his house and felt he was in a unique position free of responsibilities to make the trip. He was looking for sponsors, donations and places to stay along his route.

Here's the video:

Swanson was hoping to support the One World Futbol project, which made the indestructible ball he was using along the way. For every ball purchased through One World, another is donated to "disadvantaged communities around the world." If you'd like to help the cause, you can purchase a ball here.

You need to see this incredible music video from the International Space Station

by Sean Ludwig

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has charmed us from the International Space Station with music before. But his latest (and last) song from the ISS is a rousing cover of David Bowie’s classic “Space Oddity,” and the visuals alongside it match the tune perfectly.

Hadfield has been commanding the ISS during the past five months, and he’s taken some stunning photos, participated in fun science experiments, and shown how you sleep in space. Sadly, he handed over control of the ISS to Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov on Sunday eventing and will be returning to Earth shortly.

On top of the music video, Hadfield also recorded some final thoughts before he departs the station.

Proof That There's No Such Thing As Too Many Video Game Composers

by Kirk Hamilton

Sure, it's cool when a talented musician makes an album paying tribute to video game music. But what about when a whole bunch of composers assemble, locking their various musical tics and tricks in place for a single grand collection? That's more or less what's happened with World 1-2, a video game tribute album featuring compositions by video-game greats like Mega Man's Manami Matsumae, Journey's Austin Wintory, and Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.

Leo Messi weaves through Bilbao defenders, scores masterful goal

by Brooks Peck

When Bayern Munich thumped Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal earlier in the week, Lionel Messi was largely made irrelevant as he dealt with the lingering effects of a hamstring injury. But in Barca's match against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, Messi's hamstring seemed just fine as he weaved through defenders and fired a shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

Eccentric commentator/Messi-related nonsense shouter Ray Hudson once again reacted with his usual yelps of praise. "He emasculates them individually, collectively — he literally disperses the atoms inside of his body on one side of the defender and then collects them on the other," Hudson claimed.

In a match that could've sealed Barcelona's La Liga title had they won, Messi's 67th-minute goal made it 1-1. Two minutes later, Alexis Sanchez but Barca ahead, but Bilbao delayed the party with an Ander Herrera equalizer in the 90th minute.

Patrice Evra mocks Luis Suarez by pretending to bite fake arm after Man Utd win title

by Brooks Peck

Manchester United completed their leisurely stroll to a record 20th league title with an all too easy 3-0 win over relegation threatened Aston Villa. After the match, Man United players and staff celebrated their title clinching win with the excitement of an accountant after realizing a new way to decrease his client's tax bill.

In the subdued mix of it all, a fan tossed a fake severed arm onto the pitch, which a smiling Patrice Evra picked up and pretended to bite. It seemed to be a reference to Luis Suarez's second opponent biting incident during the Liverpool-Chelsea match a day earlier from the man Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing last season. Either that or it was the result of the human sacrifices that have brought Alex Ferguson and Man United their success.

Coincidentally, Evra has now won a Premier League title for each of the five fingers on that hand during his time with Man United.

How an accountant created an entire RPG inside an Excel spreadsheet

by Casey Johnston
A communique from the emperor, above, expresses interest at my formidable skill in killing bunnies and koalas with rocks.

Sometimes it's not always easy (or possible) to install your favorite games on your work computer. Sometimes, some Solitaire or maybe a little collaborative Bomberman is as much as you can get away with when you can't install anything downloaded from the Internet. And you'd better make sure whatever you're playing actually looks like work to any nearby screen snoopers around the office.

Throughout a few months ending this past February, Cary Walkin created the perfect solution to this problem: an entire RPG made of a spreadsheet and many macros. The game, called Arena.Xlsm, is a turn-based RPG encompassed entirely in an Excel file. Users can download that and use it to progress through levels, collect items, and battle enemies and bosses with melee and ranged attacks as well as spells.

Hands-on with the Pebble watch: A handy device with a lot of potential

After several months of patient waiting, I finally received my Pebble in the mail a few weeks ago. This Pebble is not the kind that gets stuck in your shoe (hopefully). It's a brand-spankin'-new, Kickstarter-funded "smart watch"—an e-paper bracelet that connects to your iOS and Android devices, which means you can tell the time and do some other cool stuff too.

The "other cool stuff" is the part that had Kickstarter backers excited in early 2012—excited to the tune of $10.2 million. During the fundraiser (which ended in May of last year), backers who pledged $99 or more were promised one Pebble watch, which now retails for $150. While the device is not perfect, it's a rather interesting step forward that should culminate in a healthy platform later this year.

First impressions

At its most basic level, Pebble tells the time. You may scoff at that—it's a watch; of course it tells the time. But it does its time-telling really well. It currently ships with three default watch faces, and there are 12 others that you can load onto the watch through the companion app (free on iOS and Android). By far my favorite custom watch face is "Fuzzy Time," which rounds the current time to the nearest 5-minute interval and translates that number to what you might say if your friend asked you the time. While perhaps trivial, I love this rough approximation of time. Rarely do I need to know that it's 5:13:23 pm, but seeing that it's "quarter after five" is awesome.
