Last week on November 29th the Grand Canyon experienced a rare temperature inversion where cool air began to rise from the bottom of the canyon and met warm air above creating low level clouds. Apparently this type of thing happens once or twice a year, but almost never with clear skies which provided an unprecedented once-in-a-decade view of the canyon filled to the rim with fog. Several photographers were on hand including Ben Mayberry who captured some amazing panoramic shots, and Paul Lettieri managed to shoot a timelapse of the event. (via My Modern Met)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Introducing the 2014 Color of the Year

It is with great pleasure that the Pantone Color Institute announces that “Radiant Orchid” has been named the 2014 Color of the Year. According to Pantone, the color—that uninformed, non-color-institute-attending amateurs may refer to as “sorta purply”—is “an invitation to innovation” and will be used by all of the hottest designers in 2014 to create, new orchid-inspired garments that glow radiance. Narrowly beating out other favorites like “blue” and “green”, Radiant Orchid is—according to Patone’s executive director—“creativity and originality” blended into one glorious shade of pinkish purply …

Merry Christmas From Sunny Obama

Whoops. Oh, well. There's a lot to take in in this shot of a Christmas decoration unveiling at the White House, and a lot to learn. For example, just because Sunny's the First Dog (well, one of the First Dogs. The first First Dog, Bo, certainly wouldn't do anything like this.) doesn't mean she can't get a little hyped up on holiday joy. Poor Mrs. Obama—trying to rein in that which cannot be reined: the Christmas spirit. Fortunately, Sunny's victim—a young military child named Ashtyn Gardner—was only the recipient of some overeager licking and didn't seem too taken aback. Nevertheless, there's pretty much no ceiling on what she can ask for this Christmas ...

Take Your Wedding Cake to the Next Level by Giving It a Playable Video Game

Hey Cake Boss, you’re doing it wrong. If your wedding cake doesn’t feature a playable version of Pac-Man, Candy Crush or Donkey Kong, then clearly, you’re not doing something right. These amazing cakes from Posh Entertainment and Meals for Reals catering use “projection mapping” to create fully edible cakes that guests can actually play their favorite video games on. Very sweet ...

Just in Time for Christmas: Two Unicorns on Craigslist for $1.8M

Looking for the perfect gift for that special someone who’s just so hard to find presents for? Got an extra $2 million lying around? Well we’ve got great news! A “fully licensed unicorn breeder” in New Hampshire is selling a pair of the majestic beast for the low sum of $925,000 each! Unfortunately, if you only have the need for one rare unicorn, you are saddly out of luck. The ad clearly specifies that the unicorns must go as a package deal. It also says (in all caps) “SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE”, so unless you’ve got the cash to actually make the purchase, don’t waste these people’s time. They’ve clearly got better things to do than goof around on Craigslist ...

Herb Lester's super cool illustrated city maps, chock full of insider recommendations. Four pounds each.
Grippy pad, $11.49, so he can stick his phone onto the dashboard for GPS and tunes.
Monogrammed cocktail muddler for mixing up stiff drinks for friends. $18.

A donation in his name to World Bicycle Relief, which provides simple, sustainable bikes for people in the developing world, where the power of bicycles can change lives and transform communities. $25 for a set of wheels, $50 for a mechanics toolkit, $134 for one bike, $670 for five bikes and $1340 for ten bikes. (So inspiring!)

It’s fascinating to know while looking at these desaturated images of the Czech Bohemian Forest that the person who shot them, Cologne-based photographer Kilian Schönberger, is color blind. One can’t help but wonder if the condition leads to a greater appreciation for light and composition present in these mysterious, fog-soaked landscapes. That said, these particular monochromatic photos from Schönberger’s Cloud Forest series are more of an exception, as he generally shoots in full color, but the results are equally as magical. You can see much more of his work over on Facebook and Behance. (via Faith is Torment)

Miley Cyrus Is Currently Dominating ‘Time’ Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ Poll

Draw your own conclusions concerning what this says about culture, the news media and the state of our world in 2013: Pop star Miley Cyrus is currently dominating Time Magazine’s reader poll of who should be named 2013's “Person of the Year,” with nearly 24% of all votes. Considering there are more than 40 candidates—anging from authors, politicians and religious leaders—that number may strike a combination of fear and sorrow into your heart. Other notable names including Pope Francis (1.1%), HealthCare.gov overseer Kathleen Sebelius (.3%), Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan (.5%) and Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer (.4%) don’t stand a chance …

A Reminder to Create Secure Passwords: For 20 Years the Nuke Launch Code Was 00000000

There are generally two rules for maintaining a secure password: 1) Change it frequently 2) Use a hard-to-guess combination of letters, numbers and characters. Considering that fact, let’s add, “We never went to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union” to our list of things to be thankful for. The team at TodayIFoundOut.com have posted this story about how for two decades during the Cold War, the passcode to launch nukes out of every silo in the United States was eight zeros. “The Strategic Air Command went out of their way to make launching a nuclear missile as easy, and quick, as possible.” That meant making the password extremely easy to remember. There’s also a high likelihood that there was a hastily written sticky note on the president’s computer monitor that read “PW: 00000000” ...

Want to Make Sure Your Texts Don’t Sound Angry? Don’t Do This …

Your penchant for proper punctuation may be sending the wrong messages in your texts. According to this story in The New Republic, ending a sentence with a period may signal aggression, anger or passive aggressiveness. The article sites a study from America University, which found that college students only use “sentence-final punctuation” in 39% of texts. (Presumably, when they are mad(!), wanting a reply (…) or being aggressive(.). In the article, a linguistics professor at the University of Pennsylvania said, “In the world of texting and IMing … the default is to end just by stopping, with no punctuation mark at all … choosing to add a period also adds meaning because the reader(s) need to figure out why you did it.” So stop using punctuation, or you’re going to sound angry! End of story. Share your thoughts …

Part architectural intervention and part optical illusion, Lucid Stead is a recently unveiled installation by artist Phillip K Smith III in Joshua Tree, California. The artist modified an existing 70-year-old homesteader shack by introducing mirrors to create the illusion of transparency, as the structure now takes on the lighting characteristics of anything around it. LED lighting and other custom electronic components were further installed within the building’s interior to illuminate from the interior at night. Smith says of the installation, “Lucid Stead is about tapping into the quiet and the pace of change of the desert. When you slow down and align yourself with the desert, the project begins to unfold before you. It reveals that it is about light and shadow, reflected light, projected light, and change.”

Breaking Down 'Twilight,' 'The Hunger Games' and 'Harry Potter' By Their Most Common Sentences

The people at Slate have done what sounds like a very complicated job and turned up some very interesting results—essentially, they've distinguished Twilight, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games by each individual author's unique tics to try to figure out what makes each different and why they've had different cultural impacts. The whole article is well worth reading for those of you that like to keep up on your YA phenomenons, but probably nothing tells more than this chart. It's easy here to see Katniss' stark, pragmatic character, Harry's investigative magic sleuthing and Bella Swan's—well, it seems like she's keeping busy too. So, if you're still wondering which Young Adult Fiction train to board, let this chart be your guide ...

Interactive Billboards Display the Destination or Origin of Airplanes Overhead interactive flight advertising

Created by the team at Ogilvy 12th Floor for British Airways, these awesome billboards installed in London’s Piccadilly Circus and Chiswick interactively display information about the flight that appears immediately overhead. Using custom-built surveillance technology the billboards display the flight number and route information in sync with a recorded video of a child who appears to be pointing at each plane as it soars above. In this ongoing collaboration between make-up artist Valeriya Kutsan and Russian photographer Alexander Khokhlov, the faces of models are seemingly transformed from three dimensional paintings and designs using face paint. The first series of black and white photos titled Weird Beauty was released last year, and the duo brought on digital artist Veronica Ershova who helped retouch a new collection of images inspired by poster art titled 2D or not 2D. These new color images seem to have a bit more digital assistance but are still amazing to look at. See much more here.

You May Soon Be Allowed to Make Phone Calls While Flying

The FCC is set to propose new rules that would allow passengers to make in-flight cell phone calls once the plane reaches 10,000 feet. Though airlines could equip their fleets with the necessary technical upgrades relatively easily, the new rule is facing a different hurdle—etiquette concerns. Southwest, Delta and Virgin America have said that even if the FCC allows in-flight calls, they would probably still prohibit them because customers don’t want to be sitting next to someone talking on their phone for an entire flight. A Delta spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal, that according to “years of customer feedback … the overwhelming sentiment is to continue with a policy that would not allow voice communications while in flight." Maybe airlines could just take a cue from this restaurant owner, and offer a discount if customers turn off their phones and actually employ the concept of face-to-face conversations …

Japanese embroidery artist Hiroko Kubota was in the process of making custom sized clothes for her smaller-framed son when he made a small request: could some of the shirts have cats on them? Kubota explains her son was somewhat obsessed with cats and had collected a small library of adorable images found around the web.

After making a few cat shirts the artist posted photos of the pieces online and unsurprisingly they quickly went viral, spurring Kubota to open an Etsy shop under the brand Go!Go!5 where she started selling the shirts at an impressive price tag of around $250-$300 apiece. But price was no object for internet cat fanatics and the shirts have been snapped up almost as quickly as Kubota embroiders them.

You can see many more shirts here. All photos courtesy the artist. (via Spoon & Tamago)
