Make Momma Proud This Mother's Day

OMG! Snap Dragon!

Moms may not always be good with technology, but they were good at putting up with your crying ass at 4:30 in the morning for like two years, so have a little patience when they ask you how to send an email.

Can Women Find Balance in Today’s Business World?

by Gerri
Andrew Lansford

Very interesting graphical account of women at home vs. women in the workplace.

It’s still not easy being a woman these days.

Even though women are earning more college degrees than ever, finding the balance between career climbing and happy mothering still remains a tough challenge. Women’s wages have been steadily climbing over the last few decades, but their salary is still only 77 percent of their male peer’s salary. When families are deciding who stays home with the children, stay-at-home dads are still a small minority compared to the percentage women who stay at home with their children.

Today’s women are high achievers working hard in the workplace and at home. Compared to men they choose to take fewer breaks at the office. They’re less likely than their male peers to take a walk or go out for lunch. According to Pew Research in 2011, mothers are still completing more housework in the home than fathers.

The saying “the grass is always greener on the other side” applies to working mothers and stay at home mothers, statistically speaking. Almost half of the stay at home moms want to work outside the home, but they can’t afford the child care it costs to do so. Likewise, almost half of working mother wish they could stay home but they need the extra income for the household budget.

Less than 5 percent of women hold Fortune 500 CEO positions, compared to their male counterparts. Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook, thinks this imbalance is because of sexism and discrimination in the workplace. The author of “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead” also says that there’s an ambition gap between men and women today. Once a woman begins to think about having children, she doesn’t compete the way her male peers do.

Anne-Marie Slaughter’s article, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” featured in The Atlantic stirred up a heated discussion in the summer of 2012. She reflects back on her experience saying our society must value a fulfilling home life the way we value a fulfilling professional life.

Ukrainian Attack Dolphins Are On the Loose

by Unknown Lamer
Hugh Pickens writes "The Ukrainian Navy has a small problem on their hands. The Atlantic reports that, after rebooting the Soviet Union's marine mammal program last year with the goal of teaching dolphins to find underwater mines and kill enemy divers, three of the Ukrainian military's new recruits have gone AWOL. Apparently they swam away from their trainers ostensibly in search of a 'mate' out in open waters. It might not be such a big deal except that these dolphins have been trained to 'attack enemy combat swimmers using special knives or pistols fixed to their heads.' Dolphins were trained at Sevastopol for the Soviet Navy as far back as 1973 to find military equipment such as sea mines on the seabed as well as attacking divers and even carrying explosives on their heads to plant on enemy ships. The U.S. has its own dolphin program in San Diego with 40 trained dolphins and sea lions and another 50 in training. U.S. Navy dolphins were deployed in Bahrain in 1987 during a period when Iran was laying down mines in the Persian Gulf to disrupt oil shipments. No word yet on whether 'sharks with frickin' laser beams attached' have been added to the U.S. arsenal."

Scientists May Have Found Fossils from Space in Sri Lankan Meteorite

by Kimber Streams

2013-03-12_1213

In a recent study, astrobiologists claim to have found fossilized algae-like structures in a Sri Lankan meteorite that landed on December 29th 2012, MIT Technology Review reports. If the research is accurate, the findings would provide support for the theory of panspermia, the idea that life exists elsewhere in the universe and is spread through comets and asteroids. The research, led by Jamie Wallis at Cardiff University, claims to have “clear and convincing evidence that these obviously ancient remains of extinct marine algae found embedded in the Polonnaruwa meteorite are indigenous to the stones and not the result of post-arrival microbial contaminants.” However, critics remain skeptical that the findings aren’t the result of contamination or that the rocks even came from outer space. One possibility is that the rocks in question were formed on Earth by lightning strikes, the other is that they started on Earth, were ejected from the planet by an earlier asteroid impact, and re-entered the atmosphere.
