The Low Down on Production Lead Times

by crelyea

production lead times

Can I get those doors in White instead of Black?  How long do I have to change my order?  My customer changed their mind, can I cancel my order?

We hear these questions often! In the past you’ve had 24 hours to review your order and make changes.  In the interest of speeding up production to get products to you quickly, we have recently changed this policy.  If you’ve received an order confirmation, your order is in production.  If you’d like time to review your order, we ask that you submit a quote for approval.

If you need to make a change after receiving an order confirmation, fees will be assessed depending on where your order is in our process.  The earlier you let us know, the less the fees will be, so make sure to give us a heads up as soon as possible!

While we’re on the topic of lead times, we’d like to clarify some of our product lead times.  The majority of our thermofoil styles and colors are a one-week lead time. If an order is placed by 10:00 am EST, it will ship one week later. If it is after 10:00 am EST, it will ship a week and a day later. IE: If we receive the order at 9:45 am EST on Monday, it will ship the following Monday. If we receive the order at 10:15 am EST on Monday, the order will ship the following Tuesday. The only exceptions to this are the following:

  • N700 (True Square Corners) Profile — this is a two week lead time
  • Glazing — this is a three week lead time
  • Artisan Series (TFL Edge Banded Components) – these are a two week lead time

If you would like a lead time shorter than the published lead time, please contact us. We will do our best to accommodate your needs. We also offer a rush service in which most orders can ship within a day or two of us receiving them. This service is $100 for any orders that are under $250, $250 for orders between $250-$1,000, and 20% for orders over $1,000.  We are very flexible and will work with you as needed. Here at JB Cutting, our focus is on the customer and we strive to meet your expectations without compromising quality or service!

This Epic Chart Shows The Wages Of Nearly Every Job In America

by James Kosur

Employment Jobs Report In America

Reddit user Dan Lin has created an epic chart that shows the mean-wage breakdown for every single profession in America tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Most of the top wages are owned by people working in the medical field while the lowest wages are paid to people working in the food and hospitality fields.

The numbers in parentheses are the mean wages, in thousands. The different shapes show the range of salaries available in that field.

Here’s the top 20 fields followed by the much harder to read chart.

Every Wage In America - Top 20

And here is the full chart, you might need to zoom in on your browser to get the full effect.

Lumber Liquidators Under Fire By EPA For Home Testing Methods

by James Kosur

Lumber Liquidators and the EPA

Lumber Liquidators Holdings Inc. has come under fire by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its home testing methods. The company was recently found to be using laminate flooring from China that contains an excessive level of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.

Lumber Liquidators sent thousands of do-it-yourself tests to people who’d purchased the products. The product is meant to measure toxic levels over a 24-hour period.

The EPA said on its website that the tests “may not provide useful information due to the uncertainties” of the method.

The tests used by Lumber Liquidators rely on air samples which the EPA says does not necessarily “pinpoint the specific source of a contaminant.”

In an email statement the flooring company said, “Lumber Liquidators agrees with the EPA in that home testing cannot identify the source of formaldehyde in consumers’ homes… We also believe, however, that indoor air testing can provide guidance on the presence or absence of elevated levels of formaldehyde in the home –- which helps determine whether further testing is warranted.”

The EPA also took issue with a letter that Lumber Liquidators sent to customers in which the company quoted a “recent study” by the EPA. That research was an outside study that was referenced in an agency document and doesn’t represent an EPA conclusion, the regulator said. The EPA is hoping to pass regulations over formaldehyde level before the end of 2015, the agency issued a proposal way back in 2013.

In the meantime, Lumber Liquidators is facing dozens of lawsuits since a “60 Minutes” report revealed the company’s use of formaldehyde in its laminate flooring. The company’s Chief Executive Officer Robert Lynch also resigned.

Shares at the flooring company are down 50 percent.

In a page called “Questions and Answers Regarding Laminate Flooring,” on the EPA website, the agency admits that a large portion of laminate flooring is likely to contain some formaldehyde and that emissions from the products has been reduced by as much as 90 percent from levels in the 1980s.

As of May 1 more than 3,400 test kits have been sent to customers by Lumber Liquidators. The company claims that 97 percent of those tests were found to be within acceptable levels as set forth by the World Health Organization. WHO guidelines require formaldehyde to be lower than about 0.08 parts per million, regardless of exposure time. Lumber Liquidators claims that most tests were within a “normal” range of 0.02 to 0.10 ppm.

Doing what gets rewarded

by Seth Godin

If you're not happy with how institutions or people act, take a look at what they get rewarded for.

Until we change the rewards, we're not going to change the behavior, because people always have a reason. Even if the reason isn't our reason.

[Rewards don't always come in the form of cash, of course. And sometimes, non-cash rewards are internal narratives, not ribbons or praise.]

The four horsemen of mediocrity

by Seth Godin

Deniability--"They decided, created, commanded or blocked. Not my fault."

Helplessness--"My boss won't let me."

Contempt--"They don't pay me enough to put up with the likes of these customers."

Fear--"It's good enough, it's not worth the risk, people will talk, this might not work..."

The industrial age brought compliance and compliance brought fear and fear brought us mediocrity.

The good news about fear is that once you see it, feel it and dance with it, you have a huge opportunity, the chance to make it better.

The first (very small) nail in the coffin for misleading retouching.

by Drew Gardner
Andrew Lansford

This is why Drew is a leader in his field; He considers the social implications of his work.

I have written about misleading retouching before and how photographers really do not know how their model is going to look, if they rely purely on the models portfolio which is frequently chock full over over retouched images.

There is a much bigger issue though, and that is how models, particularly women are portrayed in photographs.

The impact of dishonestly representing models to the general public is corrosive and damaging.

It leaves girls and young women chasing idealised body forms which they can never catch, because they simply do not exist, or would not without retouching.

Many of us, myself included, have been complicit, perhaps under pressure from the client but I we still went ahead with it.

Let me state right here, right now I'm not against retouching.

What I am against is bodies being presented as perfect without a 'health warning' acknowledging that there has been some post production work.

Having an 11 years old daughter I am particularly aware of the challenges facing girls and young women and I feel sure that the constant drip drip of perfect retouched bodies does take its toll on some young women playing at least some part in eating disorders, poor self esteem  and low confidence.

Take a look at these shots of Britney Spears and consider the potential impact.

Step forward high street retailer Debenhams who have taken the brave step of ditching retouching from their lingerie images.

Here is their press release in full along with a two images from Debenhams, one retouched, the other unretouched.

Unretouched

Debenhams has broken ranks with the rest of the high street by using un-airbrushed lingerie photography.
This is not the first time Debenhams has shown its commitment to promoting positive body image - the store has run trials with size 16 mannequins in windows, worked with disabled models and paralympians.
This move is just another step which highlights the responsible retailer’s long standing commitment to encouraging positive body-image through minimal digital retouching and is an extra element to Debenhams’ inclusivity campaign.
The use of some digital photography techniques to create unrealistic body shapes and flawless skin can make men and women feel more insecure about their natural looks and size.
The retailers campaign is all about making women feel fabulous about themselves rather than crushing their self-esteem by using false comparisons.
Says Sharon Webb, Head of Lingerie buying and design for Debenhams: “We want to help customers feel confident about their figures without bombarding them with unattainable body images.
“As well as being a positive from a moral point of view, it ticks the economic boxes as well. Millions of pounds a year are spent by organisations retouching perfectly good images.
“As a rule we only airbrush minor things like pigmentation or stray hair and rely on the natural beauty of models to make our product look great.
Caryn Franklin, fashion commentator and co-founder of All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, says: “Fashion and beauty imagery that is honest, is absolutely crucial for all women to see. Retailers have the power to take a stance on digital manipulation, so, I’m delighted that Debenhams has taken the lead here and customer feedback will no doubt validate this important step.”
The model is naturally gorgeous and doesn’t need any retouching but the before and after images show an example of just how much the image could have been altered; including all of the following:
  • Face and neck slimmed
  • Under-eyes smoothed and lightened
  • Teeth whitened
  • Eyes whitened
  • Waist pulled in
  • Arms slimmed
  • Tidy hands
  • Underarms tidied
  • Legs made thinner
  • Stray hairs tidied
  • Skin tone changed, smoothed and brightened
  • Cleavage enhanced
Comments lingerie designer, Aliza Reger: “Airbrushing and other trickery are not necessary in order for women to look beautiful.
“Hopefully this act will demonstrate that products such as lingerie modelled by real women who have not been retouched can sell just as well as products advertised with extensive airbrushing, which has become the norm.
“Men and women can feel good about themselves knowing that beauty is not about achieving the unachievable."
70% of women and 40% of men report that they have felt pressure from television and magazines to have a perfect body image.*
Rosi Prescott, Chief Executive, Central YMCA comments "Digital manipulation contributes to the unattainable "body ideal" portrayed in the majority of media and advertising.
“Millions of young people want to look like the pictures of models they see everywhere and the fact that 95% can't makes them feel bad about themselves.*"
Other advertisers regularly use digital techniques to slim waists, lengthen legs, perfect teeth, and even change eye colour and skin tone.
Continues Sharon Webb, “We’ve been showing natural beauty for years and will continue to present women in a natural and positive way.”

Difficult to argue against and I applaud their move.

It will need many more to follow suit if it is to have real impact and we as photographers need to play our part too.

I would be interested to know what you think.

Let's start with "sorry"

by Seth Godin
Andrew Lansford

Let's add some responsibility in there to make the customer know that you personally are invested in fixing their issue. If, as a manager, I'm responsible for causing the problem, I'm also responsible for creating the solution.

By the time the phone rings, there's already trouble. When that manager is called or this department is reached, it's because someone is disappointed, angry or stuck. Illness, broken promises or a real urgency have led to this new conversation even taking place.

So don't start with, "[Name of company] mumble mumble" as if there's a blank slate just waiting to be written on. There's already a lot of writing on that slate. Don't demand to know the record number or begin with doubt and an edge of dismissal. Be on our team.

"It sounds like we've got a situation on our hands..." is a fine way to disarm the person you're about to talk with. He won't have to spend the first six sentences expressing his anger and urgency, because in less than ten words, you've done it for him. Or perhaps, "I'd like to help, if you'll bring me up to speed..."

It's not easy being on the receiving end of a days'-long parade of blame, but no one said it was easy. We asked you to do it because you're good and because it's important, not because it's fun.
