40 Emotional and Powerful Photos From 2013 That You Must See Before The Year End

by admin

powerful-photos-2013-20

2013 was a year filled with triumph, drama, disasters, and successes. Since we are rapidly approaching the end of 2013, we decided to take a look back at some of the most dramatic photographs of the year. Pictures snapped by a variety of photographers that embody the drama of 2013. We see the horror of a tornado in Moore Oklahoma, wildfires in Dunalley Australia, flood in Manila and Athens, and typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. We see the drama of war and conflict in Rio De Janeiro, Bangkok, Cairo, Pakistan, and other corners of the world.

We look back and see the drama of Nik Wallenda’s amazing cable walk in Arizona. The thrill of Superman visiting children in Sao Paulo Brazil. We see the courage of Garrett McNamara surfing the massive waves of Portugal to break a world record. We see the joy of a new Pope leading the Catholic Church.

2013 was a year of amazing stories and amazing work by the world’s photographers and we thank you.

20 Breathtaking Winter Landscapes That Will Give You the Chills, Literally

by admin

winter-landscapes-29

Winter has crashed down upon us and settled in for a long stay, but that does not mean nature’s beauty has faded away. As you can see in this series of winter landscape photographs, nature plays no favorites with beauty. She is just as cunning of an artist with ice and snow as she is with green grass. flowers, and trees. She paints the trees with a dusting of frost. She creates icy mirrors from the still lakes to reflect the beauty of her creations. She creates sculptures with her icicles and snow drifts. She intermixes snow covered trees and ground with open waters filled with wild geese. She floats snow through the nighttime air creating twinkling flakes reflecting lights. Nature’s elegance stretches through the seasons. We are thrilled that some photographer dare the cold to capture some of nature’s most dramatic scenes.

For over two decades street artist SpY has been creating humorous and thought-provoking interventions in urban spaces. Already established as a graffiti artist in the 1980s, SpY next turned his attention to the endless palette of objects and materials available in public places to create clever, non-destructive installations. From his website:

SpY’s pieces want to be a parenthesis in the automated inertia of the urban dweller. They are pinches of intention, hidden in a corner for whoever wants to let himself be surprised. Filled with equal parts of irony and positive humor, they appear to raise a smile, incite reflection, and to favor an enlightened conscience.

The artist was extremely active this year with new works popping up in his native Spain, Switzerland, France, Italy and Germany. Above is just a quick glimpse of his well-documented interventions, you can see much more on his website. (via Lustik)

having stayed up late watching ‘scrooged’, we slept in, made coffee, lounged about and finally rolled outta bed around 3 to get some tapas at the mercado de san miguel (open every day of the year).

the mercado is a magical, food-filled heaven where you walk around with a glass of wine, pointing and por favoring at fresh snacks to sample, one after the other. they’re typically a euro a piece and all of them have been delicious.

when i am back home, in the middle of a work day and feeling stressed - i will remember that the mercado exists, and that at that moment there are people drinking wine and eating tapas and that all is actually right with the world.

christmas eve art

spent several hours at the prado museum, but as you’re not allowed to take any photographs inside, i’ve included some wikicommons images of the represented masterpieces that we were able to see in person.

the other snaps are some street scene pics as we walked back along the gran via. it was a rainy day and the light was oddly bright and filtered.

the prado, by the way, is awesome. as expected.

Step into the world of Final Fantasy in real life Lebanon

by Rona Moon

A waterfall dramatically plunging from the wide chasm in the Jurassic limestone cavern roof, down to the moss green rocks and valley below: a scene so breathtakingly fantastic and beautiful you’d expect to ride a Chocobo there. A garden fountain, a well of living water, and flowing streams from Lebanon.

But this is not CG or a fantasy, this is a real place. This is the Baatara gorge waterfall in the Tannourine, Lebanon. Dropping 255 metres into the Baatara pothole or “Cave of the Three Bridges”, this seasonal waterfall is famed as one of the most beautiful in the world. Recently this natural wonder sparked interest in Japan as a waterfall “from the world of Final Fantasy”, the wildly popular video game franchise.

Some compared its beauty to Pinnacle Rocks of Final Fantasy IX, mentioning that it should be a great place to bump into an Eidolon.

▼See the tiny person standing on the rock bridge? Probably waiting for a Moogle.

About 75 km north of capital city Beirut, the dizzying Baatara sinkhole can be found by the village of Balaa. The 90m waterfall is created in spring by the snow melt.

“Discovered” in 1952 by French bio-speleologist Henri Coiffait and fully mapped by the Spéléo club du Liban in the 1980s, in drier seasons without the spectacular waterfall and abundant greenery it appears a lot less romantic and more like… a huge hole in the ground ready to swallow us up.

▼I feel a base jump coming on…

▼The view from above…

▼Uh-oh, it seems to have sprung a leak. Don’t worry, it happens every spring!

Inspired to visit Lebanon? Sadly, this is a region which has been wracked with turmoil. If you’re in the area, make sure you avoid the border with Syria, the southern suburbs of Beirut and Tripoli. Travel safe… as beautiful as this area is, don’t make it your final “Final Fantasy”!

LG's HomeChat will let you command its latest smart appliances via SMS

by Steve Dent

LG really, really wants you to have a good chat with your washer/dryer and robotic vacuum cleaner. It just announced you'll soon be able to use the Line messaging app and a new service called HomeChat to give natural language commands to its 2014 Smart Appliance lineup. If you tell the system "I'm going on vacation," for instance, it'll put your refrigerator into power-savings mode and program the robotic vacuum cleaner. The app will also update you as to what's in the fridge, show a history of your robotic vacuum's cleaning trips and recommend recipes via the smart oven, to name a few other features. LG also announced NFC tagging and smart diagnoses for its upcoming smart appliance lineup, a scheme that'll help you avoid unnecessary repair visits, download new washing machine cycles and more. All of this will arrive in the flesh at CES 2014, but if you're interested, maybe avoid seeing Maximum Overdrive in the meantime.

Living Clay: Artist Johnson Tsang Brings Ceramic Bowls and Cups to Life

With an adept understanding of ceramics and anatomy, Hong-Kong based artist Johnson Tsang (previously here and here) creates strange and unexpected anthropomorphic sculptures where human forms seem to splash effortlessly through functional objects like bowls, plates, and cups. While the works shown here are mostly innocent and comical in nature the artist is unafraid of veering into more macabre subject matter in other artworks that grapple with war and violence.

Tsang recently opened a solo show, Living Clay, at the Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan that runs through January 19, 2014. You can see many more pieces from the exhibition over on his blog where you can also catch a glimpse of works in progress.

What Antarctica looks like underneath the ice

by Nathan Yau

Based largely on satellite data and the results of an airborne data collection mission compiled by the British Antarctic Survey, Bedmap2 by NASA Goddard is a construction of what Antarctica looks like underneath the giant sheet of ice. This iteration of the map used 25 million more observations than the original Bedmap1, which was released in 2001, and provides a more granular view.

Speaking of different body shapes. These are all basically peak human bodies.

How come 99% of them don’t conform to what the entertainment industry tells us is the perfect body?

Time to bring back this body reference sheet!

One of the better body references I’ve ever seen.  All of these people are ridiculously fit, operating in the top echelons of their sports world-wide.  But there’s a vast array of body types, and types of fitness.

I know this is off point, but Table Tennis dude is my favorite.

The Pirate Bay muda su dominio de Perú a Guyana, con 70 dominios restantes. Cómo acceder a TPB cuando está caído?

by Arturo Goga

2013 12 18 10 48 39 Fotor
