Aboriginal lacrosse was a big game and quite often teams were made up of One Hundred to One Thousand young men on each team. The goals were normally five hundred yards to one-half mile apart. On occasion, the goals would be up to several miles apart.

Often a large rock or tree was considered the goal and a score was made by hitting the tree or rock with the ball. Some tribes used goal posts 6 to 9 feet apart, and the ball had to pass between them for a score, much like today’s game.

Games could last from dawn to dusk and stretched over the course of 2 or 3 days. Lacrosse games were originally used to toughen up the young fighting men for war. There were even times when games were played between 2 tribes to settle their arguments or disputes. [x]

The Fuggerei is the world’s oldest social housing...

The Fuggerei is the world’s oldest social housing complex still in use. It is a walled enclave within the city of Augsburg, Bavaria. It takes it name from the Fugger family and was founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Younger (known as “Jakob Fugger the Rich”) as a place where the needy citizens of Augsburg could be housed.   The gates were locked at night, so the Fuggerei was, in its own right, very similar to a small independent medieval town. It is still inhabited today, affording it the status of being the oldest social housing project in the world.

The rent was and is still one Rheinischer Gulden per year (equivalent to 0.88 euros), as well as three daily prayers.

awesome...i would have beer on my lap all the time though

A Pythagorean cup (also known as a Pythagoras cup or Greedy Cup) is a form of drinking cup that forces its user to imbibe only in moderation. Credited to Pythagoras of Samos, it allows the user to fill the cup with wine or any other liquid up to a certain level. If they fill the cup only to that level, the imbiber may enjoy a drink in peace. If they exhibit gluttony, however, the cup spills its entire contents out of the bottom (onto the lap of the immodest drinker).

A Geometric Gem on the Slopes of Whistler

by Caroline Williamson
Prettocraig

well that looks awesome and crazy expensive to build

A Geometric Gem on the Slopes of Whistler

This dreamy snow country house is a modern geometric haven located on a northwest slope with panoramic views of Whistler Valley in southwest British Columbia. Patkau Architects went bold on the wedge-shaped plot of land that barely had enough space for a garage and entrance on the street side of the lot.

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-2

Careful consideration was given to the design as there were restrictions as to the allowable building footprint and height. The other major concern was the home’s ability to shed snow from the roof into the proper storage areas on site.

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-3

Using a hybrid of monolithic and framed systems during construction, the slabs and walls on the lower floor are concrete, while the upper levels are made of a composite steel and heavy wooden structure with wood-frame infill. The exterior was then covered in diagonally placed, open-spaced boards that were laid over conventional roof and wall assemblies.

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-4

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-5

The lower concrete structure dampens temperature swings inside during the summer and winter months. In the summer, the interior is naturally cooled and ventilated by drawing air from the lowest level to vent at the top.

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-6

Large windows allow for mountain views while also bringing daylight to the interior.

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-10

The faceted surfaces continue on to the interior of the house where nothing appears to have right angles.

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-12

Stairs lead from the main level up to a bridge that joins the master bedroom suite and a study.

Hadaway-House-Patkau-Architects-13

The main level is one large open space that houses the living, dining, and kitchen areas, along with an outdoor deck that opens up to the valley.

The Hamilton Princess Gets An Artistic Refresh

hamilton-princess-exterior

Oh if only we were here right now. The 130-year-old Hamilton Princess & Beach Club has been newly renovated to marry traditional Bermudian elements and history with modern comfort, luxury and art.

The architect team included Botelho Wood Architects senior architectural technologists Mark Danforth and Gary Ince, architect and partner Ted Wood, architect Michael Strohecker and senior architectural technologist and partner Jason Mackertich. The build was carried out by D&J Construction, Somers Construction and Correia Construction. The team took into consideration the environmental impact of the build, doing undersea research to make sure they weren’t encroaching on sea life. The entire renovation included 33 rooms and 66 suites with a new infinity-edge resort pool and hot tub, a new full-service, 59-berth marina complete with electrical and water services for local and visiting craft and featuring dock master and customs offices, with a restaurant above. The entire project seemed to come together so well that it won an award.

The hotel’s newly-renovated Poinciana Wing guest rooms have modern touches with lots of soft gray blue hues, reflecting the beautiful water views. With designy furnishings from brands we love like Dedon, and beautifully-designed quality bath products like Le Labo—you know this is right up our alley.

But what really drew us to this place (besides the tropical weather and modern design!) was the artwork. People don’t always pay much attention to hotel artwork, which is unfortunate, because a lot of thought and energy goes into choosing the right art for every space. Choosing art for commercial spaces is not much different than doing so for your home, except that they do it with much greater quantity with the greater challenge to make sure it has mass appeal.

The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club boasts a very nice collection of modern art from Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Josef Albers, Philippe Decrauzat and more. Some are acquired pieces and others are on loan. Mixed in with the modern originals and prints are vintage Bermuda travel posters.

When you first walk in, the lobby is full of color. It features four multicolored works by Takashi Murakami and colorful Reigning Queens pieces by Andy Warhol, as well as Cineole (2004) by Damien Hirst from his famous dots series.

In the stairway, it only makes sense to see Philippe Decrauzat’s Sz, a swirly whirly black and white op-art piece, leading you upstairs.

Appropriated Alphabet by Peter Blake is a portfolio of 12 alphabets sourced from his personal collection of printed ephemera. The two alphabets that grace Crown & Anchor Restaurant off the lobby are a nice juxtaposition: one all black and white using stencils and the other is an incredibly colorful font-driven piece.

The hotel even offers a special art-themed package during specific dates called Art Connoisseurs Weekend, featuring accommodations and an Art Walk. We’re hoping to get a chance to visit soon!

What: The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, a Fairmont managed hotel
Where: 76 Pitts Bay Road, Pembroke, Hamilton, Bermuda HM 08
How much? From $529 per night. To make reservations, call 866.540.4447
Design draw: Incredible new modern addition and renovation plus an extensive modern art collection.

Summer Lounging: Modern Outdoor Seating from Lujo

by Jaime Derringer

The following post is brought to you by Lujo. Our partners are hand-picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.

Summer Lounging: Modern Outdoor Seating from Lujo

I’m just finishing up our backyard project and we’re missing one thing: lounge furniture. We’ve got the basic seating, outdoor dining, but no outdoor space is complete without that special place for relaxation. You know the spot: the go-to spot for reading, napping, or good conversation.

lujo-outdoor-bean-bag-chairs-3

While looking at options, I was reminded about the great modern furniture from New Zealand-based brand Lujo. From free-standing hammocks to outdoor bean bags to giant outdoor cushions, Lujo’s large selection of modern lounge seating is larger and more diverse than most. Designed and made in New Zealand, Lujo’s products elevate the outdoor in a stylish way and create relaxing environments your neighbors will envy.

The fact that they use high quality materials, like marine grade Sunbrella® fabric, durable hardwoods and quick-dry outdoor foams mean they will far outlast most other outdoor furniture options and look good while doing it.

Plus, they stand behind their products with a 5-Year Warranty and free international delivery through lujoliving.com. I’m definitely considering some of these pieces for my yard—I think the hardest part now is deciding what to get from their huge selection!

lujo-outdoor-bean-bag-chairs-1

Lujo’s Outdoor Bean Bag Chairs are a serious upgrade from those unsightly blobs that your older brother played video games on in your mom’s basement. These structured cushions are both and comfortable, and will withstand anything the outdoor elements can throw at them.

lujo-outdoor-bean-bag-lounger-1

If you’re looking for a more laid back lounging experience their Outdoor Bean Bag Lounger are the answer. When you’re not using them outside they can be used inside, making them highly versatile.

lujo-outdoor-bean-bag-chairs-2

lujo-modern-hammock-1

Lujo’s Modern Hammock with Stand is an architectural sculpture for your backyard that you can also lounge in 24/7. Made with durable Kwila hardwood, you can put this hand-crafted freestanding design anywhere. And you have the option of purchasing additional accessories like attachable side pockets or a Bluetooth speaker to stream your favorite summer sounds.

lujo-modern-hammock-2

lujo-outdoor-cloudcushion-2

lujo-outdoor-cloud-cushion-4

These Large Outdoor Cushions are exactly that: gigantic pillows for your backyard or patio space. Great for kids and adults alike, these are both waterproof and filled with soft yet compression-resilient balls of “spongy” polyester fiber for a really decadent lounging experience.

lujo-outdoor-sun-lounger-2

And, for serious lounge lizards, Lujo’s Sunlounger is sophisticated and modern—perfect for poolside or patio.

These unique sun loungers have been cleverly designed to allow multiple lounging positions by utilizing a stopper to lock it into different positions. Laid back or upright, the choice is entirely yours.

Alternatively, you can remove the stopper completely to experience the relaxing rocking motion as you drift off into absolute bliss!

Audi TT Augmented Reality Brochure Brings a Virtual Cockpit to Life

by Gregory Han

very cool

Audi TT Augmented Reality Brochure Brings a Virtual Cockpit to Life

I’ve got a soft spot for the Audi TT. It was the first car I followed from concept renders to production line availability, and also the first car I saved to purchase (I loved the car so much, I ended up buying another years after). It was a revolutionary design, a seamless aerodynamic bean envisioned by a collaboration between J Mays and Freeman Thomas, a car only made possible by the innovative laser beam welding back in 1998. The original still looks fresh and modern even 17 years later.

Now maturing into its third iteration, the 2016 Audi TT captures some of that same innovate spirit as its 1st-generation predecessor, an angular and tech-equipped sports car with a gigantic 12.3-inch hi-resolution LCD display – the Virtual Cockpit, as Audi calls it – replacing the traditional instrument panel as the car’s interior centerpiece.

How befitting such a futuristic automobile has even been upgraded in the brochure department. Incorporating conductive print and a Bluetooth chip within the Audi TT Brochure Hack, a designated page becomes an app-compatible smart surface, complete with haptic feedback, highlighting the Audi TT’s Virtual Cockpit interior. The experience enlivens a static overview into an interactive preview of the car’s features, complete with configuration options and test drive requests via app.

Audi_TT-Brochure-Hack-03

Considering my long lasting affinity for the TT, I might very well find myself at the dealer looking at the possibility of a third Audi TT if the 2016 model lives up to expectations…if only to get my hands on one of these brochures to fiddle around with.

From Mashable via Demilked:

In a similar vein to 3D printing, the images are captured using Autodesk 123D and 3D designs are prepared. Then a CNC router is used to carve the designs into the ice block, according to AdWeek.

The router is chilled at -7 degrees Celsius (19 Fahrenheit), and a thick drill bit is used to create the overall shape before a finer bit is used to perfect the tiny details. The project is completed when “a touch of chilled whiskey polishes the surface of the ice and gives a beautiful shine to the sculpture,” Miwako Fujiwara from TBWA/Hakuhodo told CNET.
