It makes perfect sense. The sensors that capture images for a digital camera and the sensors that convert light into electricity for a solar cell rely on the same technology. So why not build a device with a sensor that does both, and create a self-powered video camera? Some Columbia University researchers did just that.

Head over to Microsoft’s how-old.net, upload a photo of yourself, and the site will spit out a prediction for how old you are—as well as your gender. Did it guess right? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.

Last month, a microbiology lab in Nottingham, England made international headlines when it unearthed a substance that kills methicillin-resistant staph, one of the deadliest superbugs of modern times. The most astounding part about the find? It was a 1,000-year-old Viking potion.

Do you think you could ride a bicycle that steers backwards...aka it turns left when you turn right and vice versa? It sounds easy but years of normal bike riding experience makes it almost impossible. Destin Sandlin of Smarter Everyday taught himself how to ride the backwards-steering bike; it took months. Then he tried riding a normal bicycle again...
Loved this video...great stuff. (via ★interesting)

Amongst Banksy imitators, Hanksy ain’t got shit on Wanksy, an anonymous street art vigilante who draws pictures of dicks around potholes in Manchester, England, with the intention of attracting attention to the holes so they get fixed. As the English would say, it’s right bloody brilliant.

It’s working, too. The dick holes are getting filled.

He’s annoying “think of the children” pearl-clutchers, too, which makes this even funnier. Wire should change the lyrics to “In Manchester” to be about this once local, now international hero. He’s doing great work, using graffiti as a public service. God Save the Wanksy.

For the past five years data artist Eric Fischer’s been working on something called the Geotaggers’ World Atlas, a project which hopes to discover the world’s most interesting places by examining beautiful Flickr photos. As it turns out, the maps showing the routes between them are just as beautiful.

Every year, Nikon hosts a Small World Photomicrography competition, bringing together the neatest (and smallest) images from microscope slides across the world. The 2014 winners are in, and the results are as wonderful — and creepy — as ever.

Front launched a brand new series of abstract rugs for Moooi Carpets, an offshoot of the Moooi brand, that look like someone took a set of colored pencils out and went to town. Scribble Rugs are irregularly shaped and appear to be sketches that have been blown up.
The colorful hand-drawn scribbles seriously look just like drawings with each pencil line perfectly visible. Scribble rugs are available in seven colors.

Evidence has been piling up that neonicotinoids, a class of ubiquitous pesticides, play a role the recent decline of bees. A new study adds worrying and unexpected evidence: Bees actually prefer food contaminated with neonicotinoids—probably because it’s getting them high.

PrettocraigYou can't make this shit up...North Vancouver RCMP notified that a large group of high school students were fighting with pipes.
When police arrived, they found an 18-year-old man bleeding profusely from his back after allegedly being stabbed.
Police soon determined that the teens were not fighting with pipes, but foam pool noodles.
The injured man had been knocked down by a noodle and fallen on his back. At the time, he was wearing a backpack with a glass bottle of rum inside, which consequently shattered on impact. A shard of glass pierced into the man’s back causing a deep and serious wound.
In Surrey, kids are shooting each other in a violent turf war over drugs, meanwhile in North Vancouver, teens are fighting each other with foam pool noodles. Believe it or not, an “altercation of sorts” involving high school students fighting with the foam pool toys sent one teenager to hospital with serious injuries. According to […]
