Artist Paulo Grangeon is raising awareness for the conservation of endangered species by sculpting 1600 panda bears out of recycled materials and papier-mâché! The sculptures will brighten days of passersby in ten locations across Hong Kong during the month of June. Grangeon’s project seeks to bolster the government’s “Conserving Central” initiative by using the adorable pandas as unofficial mascots.

For one woman, an ordinary shopping day at Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan became something much more sinister. After arriving home with her purchases, Stephanie Wilson opened her shopping bag to find a note stuffed inside. The note was a plea for help from a prisoner working inside the Chinese factory that made the shopping bags. In his letter, which travelled over 7,000 miles to reach Wilson, he described the horrible working conditions through which he and his fellow inmates suffered, making a desperate cry for anyone who located the letter to do whatever possible to help.

All Hail, Mother Nature: Double Rainbow & Lightning Pic

double-rainbow-lightning.jpg This is a shot of a double rainbow while lightning strikes recently taken by Joan Wallner at the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. You and I should go move there in an RV and set up a mobile meth cooking operation. We'll be just like Breaking Bad. Come on -- what's the worst that could happen? Fine, how about we just grow some weed in my closet? I think I have a couple seeds I saved from a recent bag of schwag. "Schwag, really?" These are tough times I'm living in. Thanks to J-wadafuq, who allegedly gained the power to control lightning with his mind after a one-night stand with Storm from the X-Men. Lucky! I slept with Cyclops and now I'm blind.

Since Zipcar’s car-sharing service was introduced, one of the biggest drawbacks has been that you have to return the vehicle back to the original pickup spot – making one-way trips impossible. The company has just announced the start of a new One-Way service that enable members to take point-to-point trips within cities, and to and from select airport locations, with the 2015 Honda Fit.

IKEA is always looking for new ways to reduce its environmental impact – and the company’s famous Swedish meatballs are next on the list. The store’s most popular menu item is traditionally made using beef, but now shoppers will also be able to choose a vegetarian or chicken-based meatball. According to the company, the new option will provide fans with an option that is friendlier to the environment.

A Single Drop of Seawater, Magnified 25 Times

by Christopher Jobson

A Single Drop of Seawater, Magnified 25 Times water science nature microbes

You know when you’re horsing around at the beach and accidentally swallow a nasty gulp of salt water? Well I hate to break it to you but that foul taste wasn’t just salt. Photographer David Littschwager captured this amazing shot of a single drop of seawater magnified 25 times to reveal an entire ecosystem of crab larva, diatoms, bacteria, fish eggs, zooplankton, and even worms. Read more about what you probably don’t want to know at Dive Shield. We do admit the little crab larva in the lower right-hand corner is pretty darned cute. (via Lost at E Minor)

A lighter, healthier Greek twist on traditional nachos – made with whole wheat pita chips, hummus, cucumbers, tomatoes and feta.

I was asked to do a book review for the paperback book Snack Girl To The Rescue: Easy, Delicious Food for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. This book is a weight loss book as well as a cookbook, and although there are no photos, Lisa gives practical advice on getting healthy along with a bit of humor. The book has 100 recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I thought I would try one of her snacks, because after all, she's Snack Girl, right?

A lighter, healthier Greek twist on traditional nachos – made with whole wheat pita chips, hummus, cucumbers, tomatoes and feta.

This was super easy to make would even work as a light vegetarian lunch. Next time I make this, I might even add some Kalamata olives and bell peppers. Enjoy!

Watching this (and fearing broken ankles with each loop) I can’t helping thinking about that old quote Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels.

But no, if you watch closely you’ll see she doesn’t even step on the last chair. That means she had to trust that fucker to lift her gently to the ground while he was spinning down onto that chair. That takes major guts. I’d be pissing myself and fearing a broken neck if I were in her place. Kudos to her.

Reclaimed Plastic Furniture Can Help You Recline in Style

by Peter Grisby
danipretto

company out of ontario! when in need of new furniture... need the new patio first!

Isn’t it ironic that most things that are made of plastic are used only once and then thrown into the trash, but plastic itself is a material that lasts forever; something that the Earth simply cannot digest? We may not be able to eliminate single-use plastics such as grocery bags and beverage bottles, but we can recycle them into items that’ll be used long-term… like these Adirondack-style chairs, which are made of 90%-100% recycled plastic bottles and grocery bags. The folks at C.R. Plastic Products chose to make these gorgeous items from plastics that would have otherwise ended up in landfill sites, and the resulting furniture is as stylish and comfortable as it is long-lasting. Available in 16 colors, these weather-resistant items are built to last a lifetime (or longer).

Somewhere between Yuma and Phoenix, Arizona on a desolate stretch of 2,400 acres of land, construction was just completed on the world’s largest fully-operational solar-power plant. Known as Agua Caliente, the renewable energy plant can generate 290 megawatts at peak capacity – which is enough to power 230,000 homes and is comparable to the energy output of the average coal-fired power plant. The power will be used by the San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and it’s just one more step in California’s plan to source a third of its power from renewable sources.

Beverly Hills Becomes First California City to Ban Fracking

Beverly Hills, fracking, ban, California, hydraulic fracturing, natural gas

Beverly Hills has become the latest city in the United States (and the first city in California) to ban hydraulic fracturing — the controversial practice of blasting a mix of water and chemicals into shale rock to extract natural gas. The Beverly Hills City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to ban fracking. Anti-fracking activists accuse the natural gas industry of contaminating groundwater and drinking water, contributing to climate change through methane gas flaring and causing earthquakes among other concerns.

Viceroy New York: hotel of the week

by Kate Thorman
danipretto

next time: "eels like a cross between a Wes Anderson fantasy, a ship’s officer’s cabin and Don Draper’s Central Park-view pied-à-terre."

Stately and sophisticated, with a hefty dose of downtown swagger, Midtown Manhattan’s Viceroy New York feels like a cross between a Wes Anderson fantasy, a ship’s officer’s cabin and Don Draper’s Central Park-view pied-à-terre.

Viceroy New York roof | Mr & Mrs Smith hotels

Style Tall, dark and handsome
Setting Middle of Manhattan

Why this week? New York City is getting ready for summer, and the Viceroy is leading the charge. Its just-opened Roof bar – on, you guessed it, their 29th-floor rooftop terrace – is one of the city’s hottest tickets for cocktails and craft beers when the weather turns steamy and sultry and the skyline stays backlit late. Lest you need a little extra encouragement, the hotel is also offering 15 per cent off weekend stays from now to September 1, 2014 – all summer long – just for Mr & Mrs Smith members.

Viceroy New York suite | Mr & Mrs Smith hotels

VIceroy New York bathroom | Mr & Mrs Smith hotelsOur favourite bits… The floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on Central Park, the polished-wood-and-leather Roman and Williams aesthetic, the blocks-to-any-theatre location, the hottest new restaurant in Midtown just downstairs… The Viceroy gets more than a few things right.

Mr & Mrs Smith say… ‘Carrying an air of business about it, our Viceroy Park View room follows the theme of dark wood, brass and up-lighting. If you’re familiar with plush boardrooms or wood panelled offices with subtle finishes and luxurious leather accents then you’ll feel right at home. Thoughtful details, such as the Roman and Williams design, custom platform bed and honey-hued built-in cabinets, make the room comfortable without straying into the austere.

Handsome as the decor may be, it’s out-weighed by the wide-open views of Central Park. From this height and vantage point you’re reminded precisely where you are: New York City. And with its twinkling lights, reaching buildings, nestled water towers and massive green space smack-dab in the city’s centre, there’s nowhere else quite like it.’ Read the full Mr & Mrs Smith review

When the idea of self-driving cars was first proposed, many critics wondered whether a computer would be able to make the kind of split second decisions that human drivers do. Putting these concerns to rest, Google has announced that their driverless vehicles are now able to recognize and cope with typical occurrences that take place on roads, such as jaywalking pedestrians, double-parked vehicles, and even cyclists.

Scarfs Printed With Images From Hubble Space Telescope

danipretto

love!

telescope-scarfs-1.jpg These are the $80 - $200 silk scarfs designed by Celine Semaan Vernon of Slow Factory using open-source images taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Plus they're organic and fair-trade and all that so you don't have to feel guilty about wearing one. But you should feel guilty about getting naked and rubbing one between your legs. That's dirty. Speaking of rubbing things between your legs -- I've decided to start buying the cheapest toilet paper they sell until my ass starts ACTING RIGHT. You know, that real shiny toilet paper that looks like it was made for kids to draw on. You want the soft stuff? Stop squeaking when I'm out on a date. Here I am trying to impress a girl and now she's wondering if I'm about to shit my pants. Plus remember that night after tacos last week when you woke me up at 4AM to RUN to the shitter so I wouldn't stain all the carpet between my bed and the bathroom? You're on my naughty list. "Haha!" No laughing, penis, you're not exactly teacher's pet either. Keep going for several other examples.

Angel!: Zebra/Donkey Zonkey Born At Mexican Zoo

danipretto

a zebra / donkey named Khumba. sounds like it's straight from a disney movie.

zebra-donkey-zonkey.jpg Meet Khumba, a zonkey (previously: this one) recently born at the Reynosa Zoo in Northern Mexico. Allegedly zebra and donkey genetics aren't normally compatible, yet here we are. LOVE CONQUERS ALL. Ooooor animals will just try to bone other animals. Do they choose the order of the name based on which parent was which breed, or just because zonkey sounds cooler than donkbra?
Zebra and donkey chromosomes generally are not compatible, but in this case Raya, the mother zebra, and Ignacio, a dwarf, blue-eyed, donkey made the magic happen. This is especially impressive when you see the relative sizes of the mom and pop in the video below.
Can you really blame a donkey for wanting to bone a zebra? They're like, exotic. Those stripes -- those stripes drive a donkey wild. You know what else I heard donkeys want to have sex with? Tigers. Unfortunately it's something they can only masturbate to in their wildest fantasies, because those f***ers will kill and eat you if you try. Keep going for a video which includes the baby zonkey dancing around, as well as both parents.

Simple Times: Wild Garlic Bread Recipe

by decor8
danipretto

ramps??

Hello lovely decor8 readers! It’s Rincy again with another Simple Times post. How have you all been doing? While the year started off slowly for some of us, life is well and truly catching up this month. Cherry blossoms, florals and herbs are bursting on the scene with such humbling beauty it’s impossible not to be infected with that spring spirit. A few weeks ago, one of our friends broke the mould of a seasonal gathering and led us out for an afternoon of foraging wild garlic. What followed thereafter was six hours of real conversation, a shared meal over bread and dips and that feeling of ‘why didn’t we do this sooner’? There really is something about breaking bread together that draws friendships closer.

Here’s hoping that this encourages you to do the same this month. This bread recipe is one of the simplest to put together and a complete treat to accompany any meal.

Wild Garlic Bread -
Recipe courtesy of Jette Virdi (adapted from Ballymaloe)

450g plain flour
12-14fl oz butter milk [if you don't have butter milk: try regular milk with juice of 1 lemon squeezed in, stirred and left for a little. should go a little thicker/lumpier]
pinch of salt
big handful of wild garlic

Preheat oven to 230C, Mix flour, salt and wild garlic. Add half milk and mix in circular motion. Then add remaining milk in stages. Once it comes together turn out dough onto lightly floured surface then make it round. Try not to play around with it too much as it will lose it’s ‘rise’. Cook for 15mins at 230C then turn oven down to 200C and cook for roughly 30-40mins. To check if cooked, turn upside down and tap the bottom, should sound hollow if cooked.

Fully Electric E-FAN Aircraft Completes its Maiden Flight in France

was wondering when this would happen.

E-Fan aircraft, E-Fan Airbus, battery-powered airplane, flight carbon emissions, electric airplane, electric aircraft, Airbus experimental aircraft, green transportation, small aircraft, hybrid airplanes, aircraft technology

The world’s first battery-powered airplane, E-Fan, has just successfully completed its first flight in Bordeaux, France. The small experimental aircraft is powered by 120 lithium-ion polymer batteries and can fly up to 220kmph. According to its manufacturer, Toulouse-based Airbus, an hour long commercial flight with the E-Fan could cost only $16, compared to $55 for a flight in a petrol-powered plane of the same size.

COOL THING WE WANT #431 | This Mighty Clever Gardening System For City Dwellers

cool!

(via) Vancouverites are, for the most part, largely bereft of backyards, so yearning for a little garden of one’s own is rife. This window contraption – dubbed Volet Végétal – by French designers Nicolas Barreau and Jules Charbonnet employs a pulley system that lowers plants out and away from the window so as to provide them with direct sunlight.

When vertical, the unit sits directly within a window frame and provides plenty of space for three large planters. When it’s time for some sunshine, the plant-owner pulls the cord system, the bottoms of the planters rotate slightly, and the device lowers into a horizontal position outside of the window. Additionally, the product can be a freestanding, tiered plant holder inside the apartment but the concept is the most space-saving when mounted in the window. The designers say, “Our desire was to make a clever solution to the lack of space for a small garden.

Despite not being NIMBY-proof (“The damn thing violates my view corridor and thus lowers my property value, mwaaaah”), it’s pretty brilliant. Watch the video below to see how it’s made…

When Tesla announced that it wanted to build a super charging network that would blanket the nation, it seemed like a lofty dream. But when Tesla cut the ribbon on its 100th Supercharger station in Hamilton, New Jersey this week, the dream seemed to be much closer to reality. The event marks a milestone for the little electric car company that could – and a crowd of over 100 people, including state legislators, turned up for the event.
