Watch Emma Watson launch a feminist campaign at the UN

by Kelsey McKinney
danipretto

go emma. go emma.

Emma Watson made a speech to the United Nations this weekend that both launched an initiative for global gender equality and underlined the world's need for feminism.

Notably, the speech also nodded toward misguided assumptions about what feminism actually is. "The more I have spoken out about feminism, the more I have realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating," Watson says at the beginning of her speech, before launching into a litany of reasons for feminism's necessity.

Watson, who is most famous for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies, was appointed as a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador six months ago. This weekend at the U.N. headquarters in New York City, she launched the "He for She" campaign, which aims to enlist 1 billion boys and men around the world to become advocates for women's rights globally.

Watson is not the first global celebrity to prominently announce her feminism recently. Beyoncé stood in front of a massive "feminist" sign at the VMAs, but Watson's campaign digs into some of the nuance around the topic. It's launching with the acknowledgement that the publicity around feminism as a movement is messy and complicated and in no way universally accepted.

Watson began by explaining how she became a feminist:

"When I was 8, I was confused about being called 'bossy' because I wanted to direct the plays that we would put on for our parents. But the boys were not. When at 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media, when at 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of their beloved sports teams, because they didn't want to appear 'muscle-y,' when at 18, my males friends were unable to express their feelings, I decided that I was a feminist.

This seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists. Apparently, [women's expression is] seen as too strong, too aggressive, anti-men, unattractive.

Why has the word become such an unpopular one? I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men."

The initiative seems a response to campaigns like Women Against Feminism that have built their foundations off of the idea that you cannot be both a feminist and a person who supports men. Watson acknowledges that claim by saying that this is a campaign meant to target men to become allies for women's rights in society.

In the "HeForShe" campaign, Watson notes that women have traditionally been the ones fighting for their equality when women's equality is a human rights issue that affects everyone. "HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity," the site says.

Watson also recognizes that people may not want to take her seriously because of her past as a child movie star.

"You might think: who is this Harry Potter girl? What is she doing at the UN?," Watson said in her speech. "I've been asking myself at the same thing.  All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make this better"

That seems like a small thing — to care about the plight of women in society and to strive to make things better — but, sadly, it's a monumental step. For women like Beyoncé to sign their names to a movement is one thing. Launching campaigns to create change is the next step. Watson and the U.N. hope to be at the forefront of that movement.

The Bash Bug: What you need to know about the latest security flaw

by Timothy B. Lee
danipretto

ruh roh

Right now, security professionals are scrambling to fix a security flaw some are calling Shellshock. It's a major vulnerability related to Bash, a computer program that's installed on millions of computers around the world. There's been a lot of confusion in mainstream media accounts about how the bug works, who's vulnerable, and what users can do about it.

In this explainer, I'll first give a high-level explanation of who is vulnerable and what they can do about it. Then, for those who are interested, I'll give a more technical explanation of exactly how the Bash bug works.

Who is vulnerable?

Bash (which we'll discuss more below) is installed on many computers running operating systems derived from an ancient operating system called Unix. That includes Macs, as well as a lot of web servers running operating systems such as Linux.

Whether these computers are actually vulnerable depends on whether they invoke Bash in an unsafe way. We already know that this is true of many web servers, and it's believed that other types of network services could also be vulnerable. But it'll take a while for security experts to audit various pieces of software to check for vulnerabilities.

1186846236_55c8eb1c46_b.0.jpg

(Bwana McCall)

Apple PCs such as MacBooks don't seem to be running services that use Bash in an unsafe way. That means they are probably not vulnerable to hacks from across the internet. But we won't know that for sure until security experts have had time for a careful audit.

Most Microsoft software doesn't use Bash, so users running Windows PCs, people with Windows phones, as well as websites built using Microsoft software, are probably safe from these attacks. Also, it looks like most Android phones are not vulnerable because they use a Bash alternative.

What should I do to protect myself?

Unfortunately, there isn't a ton you can do in the short run. Presumably, Apple will release updated versions of their software soon. So keep an eye out for that on your platform's software update service, and install it as soon as it's available.

There's a good chance hackers will use the vulnerability to create a worm that spreads automatically

There has also been some speculation that a service called DHCP might be vulnerable, though this is looking increasingly doubtful. This is a service that allows laptops, tablets, and smartphones to automatically configure themselves when they log into a wifi network. A malicious wifi router could use the bug to hack into users' laptops and mobile devices. So if you're a Mac user, it might be prudent to avoid logging into untrusted wifi networks — for example, at coffee shops — until Apple has released a security update.

But for the most part, the vulnerability affects servers more than users' own computers. So most of the heavy lifting needs to be done by security professionals, not the rest of us.

What could attackers do with this vulnerability?

The bug can be used to hack into vulnerable servers. Once inside, attackers could deface websites, steal user data, and engage in other forms of mischief.

There's a good chance that hackers will use the vulnerability to create a worm that automatically spreads from vulnerable machine to vulnerable machine. The result would be a botnet, a network of thousands of compromised machines that operate under the control of a single hacker. These botnets — which are often created in the wake of major vulnerabilities — can be used to send spam, participate in denial-of-service attacks on websites or to steal confidential data.

As I write this, security professionals are racing to update their server software before the bad guys have time to attack it.

How hard will it be to fix the problem?

From a technical perspective, the fix shouldn't be too difficult. A partial fix has already been made available, and a full fix should be released soon.

Bash has been around since the 1980s, and it has become an industry standard

The tricky thing will be that, as with the Heartbleed vulnerability earlier this year, Bash is embedded in a huge number of different devices, and it will take a long time to find and fix them all.

For example, many home wifi routers run web servers to enable users to configure them using a web browser. Some of these devices may be vulnerable to a Bash-related attack. And unfortunately, these devices may not have an automatic or straightforward mechanism for upgrading their software. So old IT devices might have lingering vulnerabilities for many years.

OK, let's get technical. What's Bash?

Bash stands for Bourne-Again SHell. It's a computer program that allows users to type commands and executes them. If you're a Mac OS X user, you can check it out out yourself. Go to the Finder, open the Applications folder (from the "Go" menu), then the Utilities folder, and then open "Terminal." It looks like this:

Screen_Shot_2014-09-25_at_12.53.37_PM.0.png

You can see in the menu bar that it says "bash," indicating that the program running inside this terminal window is the Bash shell. The Bash shell understands a wide variety of commands. For example, "cd" stands for "change directory," and tells the Bash shell to navigate to a new folder on your hard drive. Typing "ls" lists the contents of the current directory, while "echo" prints out text to the screen.

Bash has been around since the 1980s, and it has become an industry standard. To this day, it's one of the most popular ways for systems administrators, computer programmers, and other tech-savvy users to execute complex commands on computers.

Because the Bash shell is entirely text-based, it's particularly useful for administering a computer remotely. Running a Bash shell on a server halfway across the world feels exactly the same as running the Bash shell on your local computer. IT professionals use remote shells like Bash extensively to configure, diagnose, repair, and upgrade servers without having to physically travel to their location. As a result, Bash is a standard feature on almost all servers that run an operating system not made by Microsoft.

What's the bug in Bash that people discovered this week?

Bash has a feature where users can set "environment variables" and retrieve them later. It works like this:

Screen_Shot_2014-09-25_at_12.54.25_PM.0.png

That's a trivial example, but environment variables turn out to be an extremely useful feature when executing complex commands.

So what's the bug? Here's a slight variation on the previous example:

Screen_Shot_2014-09-25_at_2.04.47_PM.0.png

The "env" command sets an environment variable (in this case COLOR=red), and then executes a command based on that environment. Here, it's executing a second Bash shell which in turn echoes the string "My favorite color is $COLOR." Because the shell was running in an environment where COLOR=red, it prints out "My favorite color is red."

The exploit works like this:

Screen_Shot_2014-09-25_at_2.05.49_PM.0.png

Notice that the command "echo I hate colors" doesn't use the $COLOR variable at all. So if Bash were working correctly, the command "echo vulnerable" should be ignored — it's just random text in a variable that never gets used. So the word "vulnerable" shouldn't be in the output.

But the malicious string '() { :;}; echo vulnerable" takes advantage of a bug in the way Bash handles environment variables to trick it into treating the string "echo vulnerable" as a command rather than just a string of letters. Even worse, it does this automatically, even if it's evaluating a command (like "echo I hate colors") that doesn't use the $COLOR variable at all!

Of course, in a real attack, the bad guys would do something a lot scarier than printing out the word "vulnerable." They'd use this same mechanism to tell your computer to run spyware, send your private files to a remote server, send out spam, or do other bad stuff.

Wait, doesn't an attacker need to have physical access to my computer to pull this off? That doesn't sound very scary.

If Bash were only a mechanism for accepting commands from human users, this wouldn't be such a big problem. The problem is that Bash has also become a popular way for computer programs to invoke other computer programs.

For example, when you load a website with dynamic content on it, the server handling the request may be using Bash commands to access the information you requested. So while most people never use Bash directly, we're all using it constantly — indirectly — as we're browsing the web.

The problem is that Bash hasbecome a popular way for programs to invoke other programs.

Even worse, when a computer program uses Bash to invoke another computer program, it often uses environment variables to pass along user inputs. For example, when you visit a website, your browser sends the server a variable known as the "User Agent," which tells the server something about which browser you're running. (In my case, I'm running Chrome.)

Web servers often set this user-agent string as an environment variable before using Bash to execute code that generates the web page the user asked for. That allows the server to generate a different website for mobile and desktop browsers, for example.

But malicious parties can manually change their user-agent variable to contain, not a textual description of their browser, but a snippet of malicious code. And if they then visit a server that invokes a vulnerable version of Bash, the server will automatically execute this code, allowing the attacker to hack into the server.

Is anyone actually taking advantage of this bug?

Yes. Malicious software exploiting the vulnerability has already begun to appear online.

Correction: I originally stated that mobile devices running Android and iOS run Bash, but that appears to have been incorrect. Most Android phones ship with a competitor that, so far, does not appear to be vulnerable. I've updated the article accordingly. Also, I stated that a software patch to Bash would fix the problem, but it has since been discovered that the fix is incomplete.

Watch: Where the White House intruder went, in one GIF

by Sarah Kliff
danipretto

maybe google mapping the white house wasn't such a great idea after all

A White House intruder armed with a knife made it deep into the White House earlier this month before Secret Service stopped him, the Washington Post reported Monday.

Omar Gonzalez, the intruder, overpowered one Secret Service agent to make it as far as one of the entrances to the White House's Green Room before being stopped. It's easiest to understand just how far he got with this GIF that Vox's Adam Baumgartner created with Google Street View, using information from the Washington Post's article to trace Gonzalez's path.

white house intruder

(Adam Baumgartner/Vox)

Here is the route that Gonzalez took from the White House's front door entrance, as described by the Washington Post's Carol Leonnig:

After barreling past the guard immediately inside the door, Gonzalez, who was carrying a knife, dashed past the stairway leading a half-flight up to the first family's living quarters. He then ran into the 80-foot-long East Room, an ornate space often used for receptions or presidential addresses.

Gonzalez was tackled by a counter-assault agent at the far southern end of the East Room. The intruder reached the doorway to the Green Room, a parlor overlooking the South Lawn with artwork and antique furniture, according to three people familiar with the incident.

There are two doors to the Green Room; the Post does not specify which one Gonzalez used.

The new Washington Post story is the latest revelation in a series of articles revealing gaps in the White House's security. You can read more of the Post's reporting here.

The 9 college majors that earn the most money are all in engineering

by Libby Nelson
danipretto

i always thought i should have done engineering. or architecture.

What major you choose, not what college you go to, matters the most when looking at lifetime earnings. The Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution looks at what undergraduate majors earn the most and the least over their lifetimes:

major pay chart

As usual, engineering majors are at the top, earning more than $2 million on average during their working lives. People who majored in early childhood or elementary education are near the bottom — below the average associate's degree recipient. The chart only includes people with bachelor's degrees, so it doesn't look at history majors who go on to law school, who presumably earn more.

And the gender wage gap plays a role here — as sociologist Ben Schmidt points out, while the average finance major earns more than the average nursing major, women who are nurses earn more than women who majored in finance.

Man Slips A Disc In His Back, Now Has 100 Orgasms/Day

danipretto

so this seems legit. i would assume this would make one the happiest being alive...

thats-too-many.jpg This is a video documenting the sad story of Dale Decker, a man who slipped a disc in his back in 2012 and now has 100 involuntary, and often debilitating, orgasms a day. And you thought that was your dream world.
Dale Decker is the first man to ever speak publicly about Persistent Genital Arousal Syndrome - a condition he developed in September 2012 when he slipped a disc in his back while getting out of a chair. On his way to the hospital he suffered his first five orgasms and has been given no respite from them since. The painful pelvic episodes have left him housebound and isolated through fear of suffering a public orgasm. Dale lives in Two Rivers, Wisconsin with his wife April and two sons Christian, 12 and Tayten, 11. While she does everything she can to support him, April, 33 is finding Dale's condition just as hard to live with as he is. The horrific condition has cost Dale many of his friends and the relationship he shares with his sons has also been affected. Despite suffering from a near constant erection Dale and April rarely have sex.
Not so funny now, is it? The video was actually pretty sad to watch. Granted I don't know too much about doctoring, but it sounds like they need to re-slip that disc back into place and turn Dale's boner switch off. That or remove it altogether and install it in my back. I don't really have any friends or family to embarrass and am cool with 100 orgasms a day. I already spend 23 hours a day home alone, the only real difference would be like, 15 orgasms. Keep going for the video.

Standing Desks Help Kids Lose Weight at School, Improve Attention Spans

It’s widely known that sitting is bad for your health, but a new study of elementary school students reveals that standing desks can actually reduce obesity in children while improving their attention spans. Texas A&M associate professor Mark Benden tested out the theory by introducing “stand-biased” desks into the classrooms of 480 elementary school students in the College Station Independent School District. Each student donned a sensor on their arm to record their “step count” and “calorie expenditure” over a period of five school days. The results? Giving kids more standing time during class time helped them burn more calories – up to 15 percent more than traditional desks – and also seemed to improve their attentiveness.

Eight fast fashion retail giants, including H&M, New Look, Next, and Zara’s parent company Inditex, have agreed to increase the minimum wage for their garment makers in Cambodia. Thousands of garment workers had previously rallied across the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, as they continued to demand that the current $100 per month minimum wage be lifted. The agreement has been heralded as “unprecedented” by labor-rights groups, despite the agreed new wage not matching the $177 per month demanded by the workers. In a letter to Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Keat Chhon, the retailers acknowledged that “Workers in all production countries have the right to a fair living wage.”

Baby Cow Born With Giant Lucky Number 7 On Its Head

danipretto

adorable!

lucky-seven-cow-1.jpg Meet Baby Ben, a calf born at the Vale Wood Farm in Pennsylvania with a giant number 7 on its head and named after Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who shares the number 7. When reached for comment about the coincidence, the cow appeared to have no idea what football or numbers even were. Although, to be fair, it clearly couldn't speak human and Charlotte wasn't there to weave a web and translate.
Carissa Itle-Westrick, the director of business development for the family-owned food-and-grocery farm, is hoping Roethlisberger won't mind. The farm plans to display the calf when it opens its pumpkin patch for business next month. Itle-Westrick told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that she's seen a variety of cow patterns over the years such as a state, a continent, and once even a Nike's swoosh. Vale Wood Farms has been around since 1933 and while it processes its own milk and dairy, it doesn't use any meat from the cows.
Sometimes I wish I was born with a unique birthmark. Something like, I dunno, A SKULL AND CROSSBONES. Or a naked lady trucker mud flap. Then I could have saved myself the pain and money from getting the tattoos. But nooooooo, apparently I was stuck in the one-leg-way-longer-than-the-other line when God was handing out cool birthmarks. Keep going for one more shot.

Belgium Brewery Building A 2-Mile Beer Pipeline To Connect Brewery To Bottling Plant

danipretto

NEED TO GO! i love tunnels. and i need to go to belgium. Lau, let's get on that!

belgium-beer-pipeline.jpg The award-winning De Halve Maan brewery in Bruges (weird movie) has just been approved to construct a 1.8-mile beer pipeline to connect its downtown brewery (where it's been brewing beer for almost five centuries) with a newly constructed bottling plant outside of town. The pipeline will eliminate the need to transport the beer by truck every day, reduce traffic, cut down on pollution, and lead many ex-truck drivers to start drinking.
Instead of making the 3-mile drive in one of dozens of tankers that traverse town each day, the award-winning beer will flow through a 1.8-mile polyethylene pipeline, making the trip in 15 to 20 minutes. The pipeline will move 6,000 liters of beer every hour
Obviously, I'm going to drill a hole in the pipeline halfway to the bottling plant and siphon off some of the beer. Not enough to be detected and caught, just enough to get drunk. And, okay, maybe sell a little on the side for some spending money. "What do you need money for if you've already got beer?" VALID QUESTION. Ha, I guess I don't. Thanks to Thaylor H, who agrees the key is buying a piece of property that the pipeline has to run through, then claiming a beer tax.

Is Black-ish the next Modern Family?

by Kelsey McKinney
danipretto

i want to watch it. looks funny.

Black-ish, a new family comedy, premiered last night on ABC. 10.78 million people watched Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) and his wife Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) banter wittily. Those millions watched because ABC placed the show in the best possible position to succeed: right after its massively popular, Emmy-winning hit Modern Family. But even with that hefty lead-in, Black-ish's performance was impressive.

Black-ish's viewership, at 10.78 million, was only slightly less than Modern Family's 10.93 million viewers. That's 98.7 percent of Modern Family's total viewers. Since the number of viewers a show retains from the show leading into it is a very important number from a network's point-of-view, that's phenomenal for the new show.

Of course, some small number of Black-ish's viewers were likely people who tuned in to watch it specifically, but 89 percent of Modern Family's audience among 18-49 year olds (the group advertisers care the most about) stayed to watch Black-ish, another phenomenal retention number for any show, but especially a new show.

That's the best premiere night for any show gifted with the post-Modern Family slot in four years. Cougar Town only kept 86 percent of Modern Family's viewers in 2010, and Super Fun Night kept 76 percent last year.  Happy Endings kept just 54 percent in 2011, and The Neighbors only 58 percent in 2012.

Part of this is because Modern Family is no longer pulling in the viewers it was in 2010 and 2011, which makes it easier for Black-ish to pull a higher percentage of a smaller number. But of all the shows that have premiered after Modern Family, Black-ish came in second to only Cougar Town in terms of total viewers, with 11.28 million viewers.

Cougar Town, though not always perfect, will end up running for six seasons, so the future looks bright for Black-ish.

The following chart displays how well shows have done after Modern Family among the 18-49-year-old audience. Each number listed is a Nielsen rating, a rough percentage of the total number of TVs in that demographic that were turned to the program at that time.

That's A Hell Of A Deep End: New Deepest Swimming Pool Is 40-Meters (131-Feet) To The Bottom

danipretto

why?

worlds-deepest-pool.jpg This is Montegrotto Terme, Italy's recently completed 'Y-40' (aka 'The Deep Joy', which I've actually been called before), the new world's deepest swimming pool (previously: this one). The pool's central well reaches a depth of 40-meters (~131-feet) and is used for deep-sea diving practice. The pool also features several underwater viewing areas (including a clear tunnel) and is filled with spa water kept at 32 - 34°C (~90°F). That's nice and toasty. Still, 131-feet deep? How high is the high dive, a mile? Because I jumped off the highest Olympic diving platform once and I'm pretty sure I got brain damage. My mom said it was just swimmer's ear, but she keeps a lot of things from me. Keep going for a video of the pool, including a guy heading to the bottom.

Canadian man found with 51 live turtles stuffed in pants

by Colin Perkel, Canadian Press

WHAT???

TORONTO — A Canadian man facing charges in the U.S. over an alleged reptile smuggling operation was caught at the border with 51 live turtles stuffed down his pants, recently unsealed court documents say.

The U.S. federal court documents say officers with the Canada Border Services Agency intercepted Kai Xu as he attempted to cross into Windsor, Ont., from Detroit last month.

“During the secondary inspection, Xu was found to have 51 live turtles tapped (sic) to his person,” Kenneth Adams, a special agent with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, stated in an affidavit outlining the criminal complaint.

“Specifically, Xu had 41 turtles tapped (sic) to his legs and 10 hidden between his legs.”

Canadian authorities seized the turtles, which included North American varieties such as eastern box turtles, red-eared sliders and diamondback terrapins — some of which sell for $800 each — and turned them over to American officials.

While the interception occurred in August, details were only made public after Xu and a second Canadian, Lihua Lin, 30, of the Toronto area, were arrested and charged in U.S. district court this week following an investigation by the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Xu, 26, and Lin appeared in federal court in Detroit on Thursday charged with smuggling, illegal trading and exporting. They could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

In a separate criminal complaint against Xu’s co-accused filed with the court, Special Agent Matthew Martin described how wildlife officials witnessed “known reptile smuggler” Xu pick up several boxes of live turtles in Novi, northwest of Detroit, on Tuesday.

The document said he then drove to a hotel near the Detroit international airport, where he placed the reptiles in a room he had booked for two nights, later meeting up with Lin at the hotel.

On Wednesday, the document said, Xu dropped Lin off at the airport bound for Shanghai, China. Lin, who checked in two pieces of luggage, was arrested after a search turned up more than 200 North American pond turtles.

None of the allegations has been proven in court and the accused have not offered a defence.

The turtles are apparently prized as food or pets in China.

As he did so, Special Agent Fuller noticed irregularly shaped bulges under Xu’s sweatpants on both his legs

In his detailed complaint, Adams described how his agency had received a tip Aug. 5 from a courier company in Detroit about a parcel addressed to Xu that was awaiting pickup.

The brown box, which had been shipped from Alabama, weighed about three kilograms and had no air holes but carried the notation “Live fish — keep cool.”

On the same day, U.S. border agents notified the fish and wildlife agency that Xu had crossed into Detroit from Windsor in an SUV.

Adams and other agents then staked out the courier depot, where Xu arrived to pick up the brown parcel.

The complaint states Xu then apparently opened various boxes in the rear of the SUV, took out several round clear plastic containers, and placed their contents into plastic baggies, and was also seen with packaging tape and scissors.

“Xu turned towards me as he looked around the parking lot,” Adams states.

“As he did so, Special Agent (James) Fuller noticed irregularly shaped bulges under Xu’s sweatpants on both his legs.”

Xu then drove toward Windsor, where he was stopped.

He is due to appear in bail court in Detroit on Friday, said Gina Balaya, a spokeswoman with the U.S. attorney’s office.

Lin was released on US$10,000 bail. Conditions include having no contact with Xu and entering the U.S. only for court.

Learning By Looking: All Disney Movies In Chronological Order Of When They Took Place

danipretto

so many great movies!

disney-movies-chronological-order.jpg This is a chart of all Disney movies in the chronological order of the time period they're set in. I learned a lot by looking at it. I'm kidding, I learned almost nothing. Same goes for high school. I'm pretty sure I learned way more from listening to Wu-Tang. Thanks to Jessie, who at least taught me chronological order doesn't mean what I thought it did. I dunno, I thought it had something to do with chromosomes or something. Maybe I should have paid more attention in high school.

Simpsons-Family Guy Crossover Episode's Rape Joke Draws Criticism

by Brian Trinh
danipretto

it is interesting to note all of the differences in the shows but i agree this one was too far

The long-awaited crossover episode featuring "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons" drummed up plenty of buzz back when the teaser trailer dropped in May. Now, with days before the episode's debut, a joke from the teaser has critics talking again — but for a different reason.

Some critics have said a joke in the teaser went too far when it made light of rape. The scene in question involves Bart teaching Stewie how to pull off a prank phone call. In classic Simpsons fashion, Bart calls Moe's Tavern asking if there's someone by the name of Lee Keybum. Moe turns to his patrons asking for a "leaky bum".

Bart passes the phone to Stewie who calls Moe again only to say, "Hello Moe? Your sister's being raped." You can see the scene in question starting at the 0:48 mark.

As Mediaite points out, the scene shows a stark contrast between the two shows' styles of humour -- one favouring puns and gags, the other shock appeal.

The joke didn't sit well with members of the Parents Television Council, a U.S. advocacy group.

I was blown out of my shoes when I saw the scene with the rape joke in it,” PTC president Tim Winter told the Associated Press. “It really troubled me.”

Winter, a long-time fan of "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening's work, said the joke comes at a time where sexual assault at post-secondary institutions and the fallout from violence against women in the NFL have dominated headlines.

When rape is turned into a punchline "it becomes less outrageous in real life," he added.

Winter wrote to Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy but neither he nor Fox have replied to his letter. Fans of MacFarlane's work will know that the cartoonist and voice actor has never shied away from controversy.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, MacFarlane said he foresaw the media would attack him for the rape joke but added "but in context, it's pretty funny."

The Simpsons-Family Guy crossover episode is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, Sept. 28 on Fox.

What do you think about the joke? Let us know in the comments below.

Zig-Zagging Constellations Bar Rocks Urban Rehabilitation in Liverpool’s Arts District

We love urban rehabilitation projects, and this one in Liverpool is especially inspiring. The zig-zagging Constellation Bar is an outdoor venue located on a former industrial site that has been converted into a creative quarter known as the Baltic Triangle. A large waffle-like canopy made from green oak shelters along with a cast-concrete bar and wooden stools establishes a large space for parties and events. The canopy, created by furniture designer Hugh Miller and his brother, architect Howard Miller, was conceived and built in under three months.

Self-driving vehicles are expected to arrive within the next decade, but one type of driver desperately needs the technology now. Truck drivers spend countless hours on the road transporting goods, and accidents with their giant, heavy vehicles are often ugly. Mercedes-Benz hopes to make it easier and safer for them with its Future Truck 2025, an autonomous truck that should be available within the next ten years.
