Nokia Was Working on an Android Phone While Microsoft Was Working on a Surface Phone

by John Gruber

Nice scoop by Nick Wingfield:

And now, it is clear that a Nokia Android phone was more than a possibility. It was real.

A team within Nokia had Android up and running on the company’s Lumia handsets well before Microsoft and Nokia began negotiating Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s mobile phone and services business, according to two people briefed on the effort who declined to be identified because the project was confidential. Microsoft executives were aware of the existence of the project, these people said.

And Tom Warren reports for The Verge:

While Nokia was testing Android in a variety of different ways, Microsoft was busy experimenting with a Surface Phone. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans have revealed to The Verge that the company built a number of prototype devices to test the viability of such a phone. We’re told that Terry Myerson, who now heads the Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox operating systems, was in charge of the secret Surface phone project. We understand the company had originally considered the idea of its own phone devices as a “Plan B” if Nokia wasn’t successful with Windows Phone.

Think of all the wasted and duplicated effort between these two companies; if they were going to get married they should have done it two years ago.

Obama espionou até a fábrica do Guaraná Dolly

by @sensacionalista

by @sensacionalista

Assessment of Schizophrenia in Early Infancy and Interventions to Reduce Cognitive Deficits

by Shefali Sabharanjak, PhD

Schizophrenia is an adult-onset disorder that can significantly disrupt the life of patients as well as their primary caregivers. Diagnosis is essentially a post-hoc assessment, but by then, neurocognitive deficits are permanent and curative treatment options to improve the quality of life of patients are more limited. Early assessment of the risk of developing schizophrenia is essential to bring in interventions to reduce the impact of these deficits.

Although the entire set of genes involved in schizophrenia has not been identified, genetic analyses indicate that some chromosomal regions show strong correlations with characteristic behavioral deficits seen in schizophrenic patients.

One early diagnostic test is the assessment of auditory inhibition to a repeated auditory stimulus. In people without schizophrenia, a particular sound is ‘heard’ when the stimulus is provided once and is manifested as the firing of neurons. However, if the same signal is provided repeatedly the response of the neurons is diminished thereby enabling people to ignore repetitive sounds or background noise. This loss of auditory inhibition has been recorded in adults suffering from schizophrenia. The diminished inhibitory response is gauged as the ratio of responses evoked by paired auditory stimuli (S2:S1).

Similar assessments were made by Hunter and colleagues (2011) on infants 0-6 months of age to attempt to understand the role of parental psychosis, maternal depression and smoking. Recordings of responses to paired auditory stimuli were made when the infants were in their active sleep, a state that is similar to REM sleep in adults.

These scientists found that children of psychotic parents displayed impaired auditory inhibition. The auditory response to the second stimulus resembled the response to the first one, indicating lack of inhibition. In contrast, infants of parents not suffering from psychoses demonstrated intact auditory inhibition in response to paired stimuli.

Other risk factors that produced similar results were incidence of maternal depression and smoking by mothers. All infants assessed in the study had similar gestational periods of 33-38 weeks which rules out delayed development as a cause for the evident responses. These results indicate that an early diagnosis of schizophrenia is possible in early infancy and may provide a good time window of 16-18 years to bring in therapeutic interventions.

Auditory responses are shown by neurons that express the alpha-7 acetylcholine receptor. Activation of this receptor by choline is responsible for development of cerebral inhibition to auditory stimuli. In another study, Ross and colleagues (2013) have investigated a dietary intervention to establish cerebral inhibition. Pregnant women were asked to consume a supplement of phosphatidylcholine throughout pregnancy as well as for three months post delivery.  Infants were also fed with this supplement for up to three months following birth. The supplement contained twice as much phosphatidylcholine as is present in normal diets.

Recordings of auditory responses of infants showed that supplementation with phosphatidylcholine helped to restore normal cerebral inhibition to auditory responses. These results show that early developmental interventions are possible to restore the normal physiological functions of neurons that express the alpha-7 acetylcholine receptor.

Interestingly, in placebo-treated individuals, infants with the CHRNA7 genotype (bearing the defective gene for the alpha-7 receptor) displayed diminished cerebral inhibition. However, in the supplementation group, infants with the same genotype showed normal cerebral auditory inhibition.

So, dietary supplements of phosphatidylcholine can restore the physiological defects that are evident in schizophrenic individuals, at least in neuronal systems that express the alpha-7 acetylcholine receptor. Together, these studies illustrate that it may be possible to bring in restorative measures to correct schizophrenia. However, long-term follow up studies are needed to understand whether these interventions can truly bring about permanent restoration of neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenic individuals.

Facebook is No Friend to Mental Health

by Jennifer Gibson, PharmD

Roughly a half billion people interact on Facebook every day, with many more engaging in other social networking sites. With all these friends, it would seem that social networking followers have a great support system and a happy life. New research points out, however, that Facebook may actually be undermining well-being and life satisfaction.

Researchers at the University of Michigan examined two weeks of Facebook use and concluded that the more people use Facebook, the more negative they feel about their life moment-to-moment, and the more dissatisfied they were with their life in general over time. The results were not affected by gender, self-reported loneliness, baseline symptoms of depression, the size of the social network, the motivation for using Facebook, or the perceived level of support from Facebook friends.

Several other studies have reported negative associations with social networking, including tension between romantic partners. Social networking sites foster attachment issues, uncertainty, and partner surveillance, all of which lead to negative relationship outcomes. Another study reported that the use of social networking sites leads to decreased intimacy in relationships, mostly owing to perceptions about the quality and quantity of the romantic partner’s use of social networking. Divorce and cheating has also been attributed to Facebook, especially in relationships that are less than 3 years old.

Social networking sites appear to offer a means for individuals with low self-esteem or difficulties establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships to grow relationships and share connections with other people. However, these individuals most in need of positive social relationships actually suffer from social networking sites owing to an inability to communicate appropriately and negative reactions from other people, which led to lower self-esteem and negative effects on well-being in several studies.

All of this is not to say that there are no benefits to social networking, or that all people who use it end up depressed and dissatisfied with life. Patients with chronic illnesses or rare conditions are able to find information on their diseases and gain support from others around the globe, which has led to improved disease education and clinical outcomes. And, younger people who have grown up in the digital age are living proof of the transformation of intimate relationships. For many in this demographic, larger Internet-based social networks lead to higher levels of life satisfaction and social support. The internet may offer permanent relationships in a mobile world.

Most people spend their days constantly connected to things (phones, computers, tablets) and not to other people. Growing a digital network of people who “like” you, “share” things with you, and want to be your “friend” does not, at least according to recent research, create life-sustaining, life-fulfilling friendships. Social networks can certainly be used in a healthy, appropriate way and offer a modern way to communicate. But, they cannot replace true, meaningful relationships that lead to improved overall well-being.

by Carlos Cardoso

sapatofone

Claro, a agilidade conseguida será impressionante.

by Carlos Cardoso

DIY kindle scanner from peter purgathofer on Vimeo.

Homework problems for 2090

by John
Albener Pessoa

Lembrei do livro do Arthur Clarke The last theorem

In his 1990 article “Has progress in mathematics slowed down?” Paul Halmos mentions two of the longest proofs in mathematics: the Four Color Theorem and the classification of finite simple groups.

The proof of the Four Color Theorem appeared in 1976. The authors manually broke the problem into 1,936 cases which were then verified using a computer. The classification of finite simple groups was the culmination of many journal articles totaling around 10,000 pages.

Halmos believed that these were not “good” proofs. They establish the truth of their claims, but they are so large and tedious that they don’t give much insight into their subjects. He also believed that over time the proofs of both theorems would be simplified.

A hundred years from now both theorems (maps and groups) will be exercises for first-year graduate courses, provable in a couple pages by means of the appropriate concepts, which will be completely familiar by then.

(Emphasis added.)

So where do we stand, 23 years later? The number of special cases required for the Four Color Theorem has been reduced to 633, about one third of the original number. The proof has been verified via the Coq proof assistant software but is still requires a computer. There is an ongoing effort to produce a “second generation” proof of the classification of finite simple groups. This effort is expected to fill around 5,000 pages, half the original count, and also to be easier to read.

Halmos said that over time,

… mathematics shortens proofs, gives insight, and deepens understanding by the discovery of new concepts and by the subsumption of old ones under a suitably general theory that took years, decades, and sometimes centuries of labor to construct.

This has happened for the two theorems under discussion here, but not yet to a very large extent. If we assume the size of the classification of finite simple groups is decreasing exponentially, it will still be 625 pages in the year 2090. But progress in mathematics isn’t so predictable. The proof may hover at 5000 pages for decades, then suddenly collapse to 100 pages after some brilliant breakthrough. A two-page proof by 2090 seems unlikely. I doubt Halmos meant his prediction literally, but it would be interesting to see where things stand by then. (Someone mark your calendar to write a follow-up blog post in 77 years in case I stop blogging before then.)

Converta 140 tipos de arquivos com o CloudConvert

by Ricardo Fraga

cloudconvert

Six-Clawed Lobster Caught Off the Coast of Massachusetts

by Rusty Blazenhoff

6 clawed lobster

GrindTV is reporting that Captain Peter Brown and fisherman Richard Figueiredo of The Rachel Leah pulled in a rare six-clawed lobster while lobster-fishing off the coast of Hyannis, Massachusetts. They discovered the freaky-looking four-pound lobster’s left side sported five claws and its right side had just one big normal-sized claw. According to scientists, its deformity is caused by a genetic mutation. The lobster, which has been named “Lola,” will be sent to Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay Harbor, Maine where it will be publicly displayed with other unique lobsters.

Russian Author, Lesbian Activist, and Mother: "Get Us the Hell Out of Here"

by Dan Savage
Albener Pessoa

As if things were not bad enough there. This is exactly the kind of shit that may happen if we let the bigots take charge

This is required reading:

Masha Gessen is a Moscow-based writer, journalist and activist who's been speaking out in recent months on Russia's anti-gay propaganda law. Though she's an American citizen, she's from Russia and has lived in Russia for many years, raising three children with her lesbian partner, a Russian citizen. Gessen hoped Western pressure in recent months would help change the course of Russia's crackdown on its LGBT citizens, but now she believes that that's not going to happen, and that it's time to for Russian LGBT people to flee the country to escape what she says has now become "all-out war" against LGBT people in Russia. And she's calling on the United States to allow political asylum for LGBT Russians, and for LGBT activists here to focus on making that happen.

Yesterday, after months of rumors, a bill was introduced in the Russian Duma that compares LGBT people to alcoholics and drug abusers and would deny LGBT Russians custody of their own biological or adopted children.

Gessen had already sent her oldest son overseas, fearful that he'd be snatched by the government.

"My situation is that my partner and I are raising three kids, one of whom is adopted and two of whom are biological," Gessen explained to me yesterday on my radio program in an interview from Moscow. (Listen to clips of the interview below.) "In June the Russian parliament banned adoption by same-sex couples. It was a fair assumption that the law could be used to annul the adoption of our oldest son, so we made the decision to send our oldest son out of the country immediately." But now, if the new law passes—the adoption law passed in four days—Gessen's biological children could be taken too.

Same for mass shootings which are almost entirely done by white males.

If it was done by, literally, ANYONE ELSE of any other race or gender, I can’t even IMAGINE the shit that would be said by people.

I read somewhere, someone had this theory that the reason shootings are mainly committed by white males is because when women or poc feel alienated, depressed, etc, we are trained to keep it to ourselves, whereas white men are raised with a sense of entitlement that allows them to make their own problems everyone’s problem.

I wonder if it is true for shooting or for road rage or both or neither.

Official: Microsoft To Acquire Nokia Devices and Services Business

by Unknown Lamer
Albener Pessoa

"A classic Trojan horse maneuver" final act

Many submitted, and symbolset emailed me to wake up, sending this bit of interesting news out of Redmond: "Microsoft Corporation and Nokia Corporation today announced that the Boards of Directors for both companies have decided to enter into a transaction whereby Microsoft will purchase substantially all of Nokia's Devices & Services business, license Nokia's patents, and license and use Nokia's mapping services. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will pay EUR 3.79 billion to purchase substantially all of Nokia's Devices & Services business, and EUR 1.65 billion to license Nokia's patents, for a total transaction price of EUR 5.44 billion in cash. Microsoft will draw upon its overseas cash resources to fund the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia's shareholders, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions." And, yep, Elop is part of the deal (quoting Ballmer): "Stephen Elop will be coming back to Microsoft, and he will lead an expanded Devices team, which includes all of our current Devices and Studios work and most of the teams coming over from Nokia, reporting to me."

by Manoel
Albener Pessoa

Sensacionalista prevendo o futuro ? :-)
