The problem here is that honey, especially if you buy it ethically from an apiarist, isn’t actually detrimental to the well-being of the bee or the hive. In the wild, honey is used as a food stock, but in a domesticated honeybee colony, the bees are fed quite well, and so the honey is a surplus.

The alternatives, like sugar, relies on monocrops in third world countries, with transient labour. Growing up, there was a sugarcane field by my house, and I’m sure the Haitian men who worked backbreaking hours hacking a machete through knife-bladed leaves in 40 degree heat for a couple dollars a day would have traded a testicle to be a Canadian honeybee. Stevia’s going the same way, iirc.

Additionally, apiarists are actually huge proponents and activists for sustainable bee-keeping, and it’s estimated that the domesticated hive may be the last great hope for declining populations, because we can optimize their chances for survival.

It’s their life’s work, sure, but it’s not the death of them to use it responsibly.

"Judgement Day" by EC Comics. From wikipedia:

The story depicted a human astronaut, a representative of the Galactic Republic, visiting the planet Cybrinia inhabited by robots. He finds the robots divided into functionally identical orange and blue races, one of which has fewer rights and privileges than the other. The astronaut decides that due to the robots’ bigotry, the Galactic Republic should not admit the planet. In the final panel, he removes his helmet, revealing himself to be a black man.

Apparently the Comics Code Authority tried to prevent the author from making the main character black.

Best lesson from a Disney movie

This is an underrated movie

This is a grossly underrated movie.

Can I take a minute to rant? Good. Cuz I’m gonna.

I FLOVE this movie. And I HATE all the stupid hatred it gets. For a long time the buzz was “finally a black princess yay!” and now everyone is like “Fuck this movie, first black princess and she spends the whole movie a frog.”

You know what? Fuck that. Because Ariel spent a good majority of the movie not talking. Mulan spent the majority of the move pretending to be a man. Aurora and Snow White? Asleep (Hardly in the movie at all). They’re all just plot devices, not designed to take away from the traits of the women. 

And you know what else? Unlike some of the other princesses, Tiana is in control of her destiny every step of the way. When she turns into the frog does she lose hope and need rescuing? Hell naw. She busts Naveen over the head and gets the job done. She is consistently responsible and capable even after having her dreams crushed and turning into a freaking frog. 

So don’t tell me that Tiana is “less than” just because she gets turned into a frog. She’s still one of the most hardworking, badass, and capable chicks in animated history and I love her like crazy cakes.

Both commentaries are good. I feel that the creators, knowing how historic and important movie having a black princess, should have made a story where she was human! However, despite that political fuckery that took place, it is still a phenomenal movie

I’ve said this literally every time this photoset has come on my dash and I will keep saying it: I would just like everyone who constantly, uncritically praises this movie because Tiana is so hardworking and bad ass to stop and think for a moment about why it is that Disney chose the film with the first Black princess to break away from the traditional Disney narrative and send the message “you won’t get a fairy godmother, you have to work hard to achieve your dreams”. Why now, with this particular movie, with this particular Princess? 

My problems with this movie go a lot deeper than just ire at the fact that the first Black princess spent most of her movie as an animal, though that is certainly worthy of criticism. (After all, in her human form, she wasn’t allowed to have natural hair either, meanwhile people fall over themselves to praise Pixar for lovingly animating every ginger curl on some white girl’s head.)

Telling girls that they have to work hard to achieve their dreams is a good message. Girls having control over their own destiny is a good message. Girls of all races and ethnicities can benefit from hearing this. But these messages can’t be divorced from the reality of oppressive expectations for Black women and how we specifically experience racialized sexism in a kyriarchal society. They can’t be divorced from the way that Black women are specifically expected to shoulder our own burdens, are not allowed to dream too much or be too carefree. And we are expected to do this by everyone—white folks, Black folks (esp. Black men), everybody of every persuasion. Black women are told from the moment we are born, by our parents and by the world, that we have to work three times as hard to be half as successful, that toil is our lot in life, and not to expect a damn bit of help with any of these burdens. Not only that, we are told we have to shoulder everyone else’s burdens, too. And we can’t have a moment of complaint or vulnerability, we have to be Strong Black Women at all times. Some of us have our dreams literally beaten out of us by parents who fear for us—they crush us before the world can do it, for our own good. Dreams and whimsy are specifically not for us as Black women, we can’t “afford” to have those things, and we certainly can’t afford to dream of being swept off our feet by Prince Charming, not in a world that denigrates and denies our beauty and desirability as women worthy of love and romantic companionship at every turn, hypersexualizing us as animalistic exotic Jezebels and de-sexualizing us as Mammies by turns.

Why is it that the first Black princess is the one who is saddled with a lazy man-child that she has to whip into shape for a prince?

And these are things that are never ever ever told to white girls, not in a million years, because they are placed on pedestals, they are told to expect Prince Charming to sweep them off their feet. The very fact that this movie is specifically set in the real world and grounded firmly in real history as opposed to a fantasy mashup only inspired by various times and places like every white Princess movie was a deliberate choice, make no mistake. It was about denying Black girls a fairytale princess like Cindy or Aurora or Ariel. Dreams and whimsy and fantastic flights of fancy are not for us. Even Tiana’s requisite cute animal sidekick died.

And in the very end, how did Tiana actually achieve her dream? It wasn’t even through all the hard work and toil and struggle that the movie kept harping on as being the way to go for her. It wasn’t even though the closest thing to a fairy godmother the movie gave us, in Mama Odie. In the end, it was through the benevolence of a rich, spoiled white woman who took pity on her.

I’m not saying don’t like the movie. It’s a good movie in a lot of ways—the animation is beautiful, the songs are amazing (esp. Mama Odie’s song), the characters are great, and it’s got way more emotional punch than most Disney movies. Tiana is truly an amazing character and one of my favorite Disney Princesses. I love Naveen, flaws and all, and I felt like their romance was probably the best one out of all of them because it felt the most genuine, even with my problems with it. And just the fact that Black children, particularly Black girls, finally have a princess to call their own and be included means the absolute world to me. All my younger relatives have PatF everything, by design, because I want them to be able to see themselves in the stories they love the way I never could when I was coming up, and my generation of Black girls had to adopt Jasmine because she was The Brown One and we figured she would be the closest thing we would ever get. I’m not saying don’t love Tiana and what she means, or don’t love the movie.

What I’m saying is think about this movie on more than just a “yay Tiana is so badass” type of level, think about what mindset went along with the message (again, a message crafted by a white corporation). What might appear on the surface to be a wholly positive message really isn’t when you look at it on a deeper level, and you place this film in its proper historical context of media messages sent about and to Black women and girls—particularly when juxtaposed against the historical context of media messages sent about and to white women and girls.

You can enjoy and appreciate the movie for what it means, especially to little black girls, while still criticizing it for the undertones of misogynoir lurking under the pretty surface. You can love Tiana while recognizing that she is a product of a society that believes Black women only exist to work hard, carry everyone around them, and then die.

I was thinking of two long-running media franchises today. First, because last night was the 26th season premiere, The Simpsons. Second, because I was listening to the very awesome Rachel and Miles X-Plain the X-Men podcast this afternoon, the X-Men comics (and all their attendant media incarnations). While they are different in most respects, they have certain key elements in common; both have large (if steadily dwindling) fanbases; both take place in vast multiverses filled with dozens, if not hundreds, of supporting characters; and both went through "golden" eras very early in their runs, which attracted a tremendous audience of loyal followers, many of whom now feel that the respective franchises have all but exhausted their potential and need to be, if not retired, then downsized considerably in the interest of preserving what was great about them in the beginning.

The Daily Show aired its long awaited segment on the Washington, D.C., NFL team name, in which fans were confronted by Natives on the set.

Before it even aired, the segment proved controversial. The satirical cable television news program had recruited team fans for the segment via Twitter; four were ultimately chosen to participate. But those participants told the Washington Post they felt like they were attacked.

Kelli O’Dell, who says it was unfair for The Daily Show to have her debate Amanda Blackhorse—the lead plaintiff in Blackhorse v. Pro-Football, Inc., which resulted in cancelling six of the team’s trademarks—says she felt like she was placed “in danger.” O’Dell later called authorities to pull The Daily Show tapes she had consented to appear on:

Two days later, O’Dell said she called D.C. police and tried to submit a police report, but authorities told her no crime had been committed.

People want their right to be racist. But the minute they approach facing real life consequences—and mild ones, given what they should expect for years of violence and slurs—look how they shake and cry. I just don’t understand where this concept of ‘fake geek girls’ came from. Like, AT ALL.

Cus when I look for fandom related stuff like 90% of the fan art and the fanfiction and the meta, zines, comics, etc. Like 90% of the shit that I’ve seen is created by women & girls.

And all that stuff take’s a lot of work and research and critical analysis and staring at reference photos for hours.

We are literally the most well versed and invested group in the fandom. So, like, What the fuck boys? You mad you can’t keep up?

I saw an argument, and I can’t find it now, but it totally made sense, that there’s a gender split in fandom. Male fandom tends to be a curator fandom; male fandom collects, organizes, and memorizes facts and figures. Male fandom tends to be KEEPERS of the canon; the fandom places great weight on those who have the biggest collection, the deepest knowledge of obscure subjects, the first appearances, creators, character interactions.

Female fandom is creative. Females create fanart, cosplay, fanwritings. Female fandom ALTERS canon, for the simple reason that canon does not serve female fandom. In order for it to fit the ‘outsider’ (female, queer, POC), the canon must be attacked and rebuilt, and that takes creation.

"Male" fandom devalues this contribution to fandom, because it is not the ‘right’ kind of fandom. "Girls only cosplay for attention, they’re not REAL fans!" "Fanfiction is full of stupid Mary Sues, girls only do it so they can make out with the main character!" "I, a male artist, have done this pin-up work and can put it in my portfolio! You, a female artist, have drawn stupid fanart, and it’s not appropriate to use as a professional reference!"

In the mind of people who decry the ‘fake geek girl,’ this fandom is not as worthy. It damages, or in their mind, destroys the canon. What is the point of memorizing every possible romantic entanglement of heterosexual white Danny Rand if someone turns around and creates a fanwork depicting him as a bisexual female of Asian descent (thus subverting Rand’s creepy ‘white savior’ origins)? When Danny Rand becomes Dani Rand, their power is lessened. What is important to them ceases to be the focus of the discussion. Creation and curatorship can work in tandom, but typically, in fandom, they are on opposite poles.

This is not to say that there aren’t brilliant male cosplayers or smashing female trivia experts, this is to say that the need of the individual fan is met with opposing concepts: In order for me to find myself in comics, I need to make that space for myself, and that is a creative force. Het white cis males are more likely to do anything possible to defend and preserve the canon because the canon is built to cater to them.

This morning I’m thinking about manpain. Specifically, superhero angst.

Specifically Batman. And Captain America.

As a digression, I feel like what distinguishes “manpain” from just regular pain is not so much the man but the shooting directions. Like, you know it’s manpain when the camera goes into tight closeup on their clenched jaw, or when they are shot backlit in an alley with smoke swirling around their feet. Or with a big fire blazing behind them. Or if they are trudging through a crowded cityscape that’s all black and white and they are the only ones in color.

Case in point: this is Batman. His parents are dead. It’s very sad. He has a lot of manpain.

Because of all his pain, Batman is not fully able to trust anyone. He pushes everyone away. Sometimes he lashes out against those closest to him.

This is Batman at Christmas time.

Batman is not ever going to go to therapy and deal with his trust issues, or talk about whether he might have something like depression and whether it might respond to medication, even though he could definitely afford it because he is a billionaire. He’s not going to do these things because of editorial decree.

Anyway, so Captain America has a lot of manpain too.

Because he’s grieving and lonely, Captain America works hard at forming connections with the new people he meets. He doesn’t understand their frame of cultural reference, so he diligently follows up whenever somebody gives him a book or movie or other kind of recommendation.

He visits a support group for veterans.

He also checks in with his teammates regularly, and makes sure they know that he cares about them. He listens to their problems and offers his support.

So my point here is pretty simple. I think the Captain America characterization is a lot more interesting and complex. It just gets boring to have a character like Batman who is always going to have the same shit because he’s never gonna deal with his shit because he’s not allowed to deal with his shit. By contrast, Steve Rogers is warm and human and adult and fucken’ heroic. He’s got shit too but he mans up and carries it the best he can.

Both Batman and Captain America are actually team leaders, but Batman isn’t allowed to be a very good one because he also has to be a brooding loner who hangs out on top of gargoyles most of the time. Preferably in the rain.
