Swan Brothers

It happened one summer that a curse fell on my family. The details aren’t important. We could be here all night with who married whom and who cursed what. There was a curse, that’s all you need to know.

All seven of my brothers were turned into swans. From loud, hard-handed boys, they became mute birds, with wings as white as cloud and eyes as dark as heaven.

There was a great deal of chaos. There usually is, when someone turns into a bird. They went mad indoors and had to be ushered out into the gardens, to flap and sulk and arch their necks in beautiful reproach.

The wise woman of the woods came to me, with her hair wrapped up in leaf and copper wire. She told me that I was given the task of weaving seven shirts in silence, and only then would they be restored to human form.

A single word spoken, a single stitch unsewn, and they would be swans forever.

As soon as the wisewoman left the room, I pitched my spindle into the fire and sang aloud the raunchiest song I knew.

I never liked my brothers. They made much better swans.

The End

Host John Oliver Discusses Native Advertising on ‘Last Week Tonight’

by Rollin Bishop

Host John Oliver discussed native advertising on a recent episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Oliver comes back again and again to the idea that the combination of news and advertising compromises the former.

The line between editorial content and advertising in news media is blurrier and blurrier. That’s not bullshit. It’s repurposed bovine waste.

YOO.

If you try to tell me the Hunger Games isn’t good enough to go toe-to-toe with shit like 1984, Lord of the Flies, and Farenheit 451 then we are gonna have to throw the fuck down

This. All of this. It applies to shoujo manga and anime as well.

YES YES YES!!

i remember reading about gothic literature in the 18th century, and how these novels all started off being called romances (borrowing from the french term) and a lot of their authors were women. when men entered the game prominently, they started calling their works novels—which were more ‘logical’ and based in more ‘honourable’ traditions of classical works, to give a distinction from the sentimental gothic works of women authors*.

and actually (and i hope i’m right here, i’m going off memory) gothic fiction was coined that rather early on and was meant to be an insult. because  when gothic fiction got its start, gothic architecture was so passé (this was well before the victorian gothic revival) and everyone was doing, i think, like neo-classical. which was a big cultural thing, w the age of enlightenment digging up classical greek and roman works & getting back into philosophizing etc etc. so calling it gothic after gothic architecture was meant to be a huge insult to a genre of these romances that were being written by women, and then men strolled in and gave their gothic works the classical distinction of novels.

so anyway. yeah. sexism.

—-

*but anyone who’s read gothic fiction, by men or women, knows that it’s just a huge vat of seeping, garish absurdity (and it’s marvellous.) so really, who were these dudes kidding.

“Of course, whether Obama opposes Internet “fast lanes” right now is immaterial since the only thing that matters is the opinion of Wheeler, who had served as president the National Cable Television Association in the 1980s and as CEO of CTIA until 2004, and who was confirmed as the new chairman of the FCC last year. If Obama really wanted to preserve net neutrality, then maybe he should have put a little more thought into appointing the public official most responsible for deciding its fate.”

#and I just don’t feel entitled to someone else’s life’s work.

That comment exactly!! It’s not mine and I can survive without it, so I will.

This is why honey is not vegan.

The problem here is that honey, especially if you buy it ethically from an apiarist, isn’t actually detrimental to the well-being of the bee or the hive. In the wild, honey is used as a food stock, but in a domesticated honeybee colony, the bees are fed quite well, and so the honey is a surplus.

The alternatives, like sugar, relies on monocrops in third world countries, with transient labour. Growing up, there was a sugarcane field by my house, and I’m sure the Haitian men who worked backbreaking hours hacking a machete through knife-bladed leaves in 40 degree heat for a couple dollars a day would have traded a testicle to be a Canadian honeybee. Stevia’s going the same way, iirc.

Additionally, apiarists are actually huge proponents and activists for sustainable bee-keeping, and it’s estimated that the domesticated hive may be the last great hope for declining populations, because we can optimize their chances for survival.

It’s their life’s work, sure, but it’s not the death of them to use it responsibly.

literally read anything about the history of sugarcane and the cuban sugar industry if you think sugar is or ever has been more ethical than honey

Hell, read up on the Haitian revolution(s) or sugar cane production in the US from the 1800s-present.

Look, be vegan, because: you do you. Just don’t be a lying, unscientific dick about it.

*rubs face with hands*

Somewhere, an aging worker addresses a tumble of bright-skinned larvae. “Those gardens you’ll visit? Each one is the result of a single sloth-like hominid, working for thousands of bee lifetimes in service to the flowers that feed us.”

"No way!" chorus the larvae, who are all female.

"It’s true," says the worker, who is venerable at over two months old. "No one knows how long they live. We believe there are some over a decade old." (The larvae gasp.) "But they have very poor vision and can only see a couple of shades of blue, and they live very widely spaced. Be kind to them. They are probably very lonely creatures."

…a lifetime’s work is relative, after all.

Four Reasons Why You Should Read Literature

by Patrick Allan

You can probably remember the feeling of discontent that came when you were assigned literature to read in school. It's hard to find the desire to read old books about old things when there are things happening right now, but here are four very big reasons why you should anyway.

I don’t know why we keep equating Birth Control pills with Condoms, they are not the same thing. There ARE female condoms, and they are the same thing. Not often used I don’t think but they do exist.

Birth control pills however are a drug, and have side effects. And fuck up the environment severely. There are comparable pills for men too, but they are iffy as to whether they will permanently damage the male. You can get monthly shots though if you’re a man, and I’ve read that those are more effective than birth control.

Because there isn’t currently a male equivalent for hormonal BC on the market, as you noted, so this is the most convenient comparison to make. It doesn’t say anywhere in it that condoms have side effects; the entire purpose of this not to comment on condoms, it’s to show cis men what it’s actually like to get birth control, because so many of them seem to be under the impression you can pop into Sams Club and pick up a mega-pack for a cool $2.50 or some shit.

Also, RE: the sentence I bolded above, hormonal BC pills have caused lasting health consequences and in some cases DEATH in the people who take them, and yet it’s concern that cis men MIGHT experience side effects down the road that’s keeping male BC from the shelves. People with working uteri are regularly expected (by their cis male partners) to take responsibility for pregnancy prevention by taking birth control even though it’s potentially hazardous to their health, and then we get shit on by everyone from your local religious pharmacist to the god damn Supreme Court.

I was on birth control pills for twenty years. ‘Round about my mid-thirties, my doctor suggested I get an IUD instead.

When I asked why, he looked up from his chart and said “Because nobody really knows what those things are doing to you long-term, and I’d feel much better if you were off them before you turn forty.”

I switched a month later. The Pill was great when I needed it, but Christ, we’d need to do more and better.
