Marvel at the Work Involved in Bringing Deadpool’s Mask to the Big Screen

by Blake Rodgers

Yeah, we said “Marvel.” You know we’re not above something like that! With the Blu-ray of Deadpool being released on May 10, 2016, there is barely enough edge left on our seats to sit on. Not only because we get to re-watch every glorious bit of ultra-violent content that made it the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, but we’ll also get to absorb all the sweet, sweet DVD bonus content.

Deadpool

In the IGN featurette above that was recently shared by Gizmodo, we get a taste of the behind-the-scenes stuff we’re craving more than a delicious chimichanga. Now you can see the extensive amount of work involved in giving Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool an emotive face on-par with that of his comic book counterpart.

Cloth masks, as we assume most are in comic books, just won’t work in the real world for a litany of reasons and it’s fantastic we don’t have to settle for such things anymore. For Deadpool, the mask turned out to be a high-tech amalgam of traditional costume design, computer-aided models, and 3D-printed parts. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the masks is that some actually have detachable eye pieces that appear to be held in place with small magnets. This design feature allowed for a number of different eyepieces of varying detail and utility to be swapped out on the fly, depending on the shots needed.

We have a few more weeks to wait for more behind-the-scenes content from the DVD, but until then we’ll just perfect our plans to eventually pilfer one of those masks away from the filmmakers. Let’s discuss Ocean’s 11-style capers to do so in the comments below!

The Last Donut Ignites A Civil War Between Chris Evans And Robert Downey Jr.

by Erik Amaya

In a parody of the Captain America: Civil War ads, actors Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans enact a civil war of their own over the last donut with red and blue sprinkles. But as the video posted to People Magazine’s Twitter account reveals, the real star of the spoof is Elizabeth Olsen as the background performer watching it all transpire.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6th.

THE FORCE AWAKENS Aligns Perfectly with DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

by MacEagon Voyce

For cosmic explorers—a euphemism for both the curious and the stoned—“The Dark Side of Oz” is a rite of passage. The eerily synchronous mash-up of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz has impressed many-a-dorm room. Also known as “The Dark Side of the Rainbow” and “The Wizard of Floyd,” the phenomenon works by using the Floyd record as the film’s score. Just turn the volume up on the record player and down on the TV, hit play, and watch as visual and audio cues align, evoking a wild sense of synesthesia that’s been blowing minds for decades.

Apparently, three consecutive plays through the Floyd soundtrack also fits exceptionally well with The Force Awakens. A video of the film’s first eight minutes, paired with the first eight minutes of Dark Side has surfaced (see above), and some Reddit users went ahead and documented all the notable synchronizations:

– When Poe (Oscar Isaac) wakes up in Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) torture chamber, the lyrics of “The Great Gig in the Sky” go, “I’m not afraid of dying/ Anytime will do,” and the song’s scream happens right as Poe opens his own mouth.

– “Time” plays while we witness the repetitive mundanity of Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) life making a living by scavenging old electronics.

– The “Us and Them” lyric “And after all, we’re only ordinary men” is sung right as Finn (John Boyega) tells Rey that Resistance fighters look like him. “Some of us,” he says. “Others look different.”

– Twice during the “Keep your hands of my stack” line in “Money”, someone grabs a lightsaber: First it’s Rey taking hold of Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill), then Han Solo (Harrison Ford) grabbing Kylo’s.

– “Us and Them” again syncs with the battle of Battle of Takodana. As Finn surveys the battleground, the lyrics go, “God only knows/ It’s not what we would choose to do.” Then, as Gilmour sings, “Blue,” Finn ignites the blue blade.

– In what turns out to be his final scene, the camera focuses right on Han Solo as the lyrics, “I never said I was afraid of dying” are heard.

– During Kylo and Rey’s final fight, the “Us and Them” lyrics go, “Black and blue/ Who knows which is which and who is who,” echoing the fight between going to the Dark Side or staying with the Light Side of the Force.

– “Brain Damage” in almost its entirety seems to fit with the movie’s final scene as Rey makes her way towards Luke: “The lunatic is on the grass/ Remembering games, and daisy chains and laughs/ Got to keep the loonies on the path.”

The Force Awakens isn’t available for purchase yet, and since we know none of you would stoop so low as to pirate the film, you’ll have to wait to experience–wait for it: “The Dark Side Awakens” (no wonder they fit together). It’ll be well worth the wait, cosmic explorers; see you in space.

Iron Lightyear Takes to the Skies in this Awesome Figure Customization

by Donnie Lederer

Toy customization can be a tricky thing. When it goes wrong, you get something off the rails like “Surf-Blast Spider-Man” or “Skydiving and Marathon Running Batman” that you would probably see in the aisle of Target. When it goes right, you get a creation like the one Sam Kwok made. He took a Hot Toys 1/6 scale Iron Man Mark 39 figure and turned it into the ultimate Buzz Lightyear. Let’s just say the ending of Toy Story 3 would have been a little different if Andy had THIS Buzz in his collection.

Iron Buzz 1

Iron Buzz 2

What’s cool with this figure is that depending on who you are imagining inside the suit, you get two distinctly different possibilities.

Iron Buzz 3

On the one hand, you have a Tony Stark that just wants to goof around. His guilty pleasure is Pixar movies so he decides, “Meh, what the heck.” Next thing you know, Captain America‘s next upgrade includes a cowboy hat (this version takes place BEFORE Civil War).

Iron Buzz 4

On the other hand, you have the dark and gritty reboot of Buzz Lightyear. He’s a no-nonsense space cop that that’s been on the job for 25 years. After retiring to his space houseboat, he’s pulled back in after the space-drug lord Zurg has finally reappeared. Buzz is the only one who can stop him.

Iron Buzz 5

Iron Buzz 6

If either one of those scenarios occurred, Disney and Marvel would have my money because that’s something I would need to see to believe.

You can check out more of Sam’s creations on his Facebook page here.

So what do you think? Has the Disney/Marvel mashup been taken to the next level? What other combinations would you like to see? Which of the above versions should be made a reality? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.

News Post: No Moles Were Harmed

by Brian
Brian:

Hi. Ok. I’m posting on the front page of Penny Arcade. Cool. No big deal. I can just write some stuff and everything will be fine, right? If I hurry up and finish writing this, I can even—maybe—start breathing again.

We made new notebooks.

Even better, they are Moleskines. Real, actual, beautiful Moleskines! They look amazing (as Moleskines always do), and we have 4 different versions available. But… one of them can ONLY be found at PAX shows. The other 3 are available on the store now.

3 beautiful moleskines

If you like a lined notebook to organize your flowing words, I recommend the Tycho Moleskine. It has Tycho debossed right there into the oilcloth cover and has words specifically designed to inspire you, the dauntless writer.

If you prefer to throw down some shapes and sketches, take the Gabe Moleskine. It is totally unlined and has a jovial Jonathan Gabriel on the cover, encouraging your arts. This one also has some choice words on the inside cover, designed for maximum and lasting impact.

And if you see yourself as more of a serious businessperson, you can get the First Party Moleskine and get one step closer to being as well-prepared, well-appointed and well-equipped as, well, Robert. The First Party Moleskine is lined and has a simple First Party logo debossed in one corner of the cover.

All three are the 5.5 inch x 3.5 inch Pocket Moleskine with custom-designed paper bands. You know, the full Moleskine treatment.

moleskines in their natural habitat

I think they came out stunning. This post will probably be late because I keep opening and closing my Tycho notebook appreciatively. I mean… the quote gets me EVERY time and the elastic band is just so satisfying to seat and unseat and seat. And unseat. And seat.

I can speak for their thirst for notes and words and drawings. I’ve already filled one up. They are incredibly portable and are, if it ever comes to this for you—and I hope it doesn’t, geez—highly effective as spider-killing projectiles.

Or so I’ve heard. From a friend. I would NEVER!

In conclusion. Penny Arcade Moleskines! Get one! Or collect all 4! You can get 3 right… NOW!

Clever STAR WARS Fan Hits the Road With BB-8

by Michael Walsh

As a Star Wars fan you probably rolled with the Rebel Alliance against the Empire before, and you roll with Resistance against the First Order now. You follow the path of a Jedi Knight, and you would never travel down the road to the Dark Side. Yeah, you go traverse the galaxy like Anakin and not Darth Vader, but do you roll with BB-8? No, I mean do you literally roll with BB-8 when you hit the road, like this clever fan?

BB-8-Car-Full
Reddit user dubsalidy saw this Star Wars fan and their decked-out car driving down the road with BB-8 rolling alongside the back. Well, it wasn’t really BB-8, but the back passenger side tire made it look like The Force Awakens‘ little round astromech droid was following the car, as though the car was Rey on Jakku.

Considering the person was operating a metal death machine at the time, we won’t hold it against him or her for not managing to get decent video.

Best I can tell that little hashtag on the car, #ISPYBB8, is another creation of the driver, making this the coolest (or nerdiest–for some of us those are the same thing) around. So try to keep an eye out for it in California (that’s the best guess based on the car’s plates), or possibly any imitators that might start driving around elsewhere.

Oh, and if you do find the car, do not follow it. It will NOT bring you to the location of Luke Skywalker, but it might scare the driver.

What is your favorite use of BB-8 so far? Roll into our comments section and let us know.

DEADPOOL Now the Highest Grossing R-Rated Film of All Time

by Matthew Hart

We all know that Deadpool wears a red suit so the bad guys can’t see him gush blood, but Wade Wilson may need a green suit now too, ’cause the merc con una boca is making it rain!

That’s right, The Little Foul-Mouthed Engine That Could, Deadpool, is now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, despite a relatively slim production budget and a February release date. So everybody please give the film a (tiny, slimy) hand for pulling off a miracle.

So far, according to Box Office Mojo, the film has grossed a whopping worldwide total of nearly $746 million, which is enough to supplant the previous chart topper, The Matrix Reloaded, which came in at a grand total of $742.1 million. Domestically, Deadpool is only number three however, with $349.5 million, but considering the film is still going strong in theaters, there’s an excellent chance it can topple both American Sniper, which is #2 with $350.1 million, and The Passion of the Christ, which is #1 with $370.8 million.

While this is obviously stellar news for director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds—as well as everyone else involved with the film—a sequel is already in the works, which means audiences have done their job of convincing Hollywood that this is the kind of movie that should be gracing silver screens. But remember that Deadpool was successful, as our own Kyle Anderson points out, not only because it delivered R-rated raunch, but also “took risks… challenged the establishment, and was chiefly faithful to the source material.”

Now on a scale from “jump off a highway overpass” to “cut off your own hand,” how excited are you to see Deadpool become the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time? Let us know in the comments section below!

Daniel Radcliffe Shared a Photo of HARRY POTTER and Neville Before 1st Movie Filmed

by Michael Walsh

How do you prepare when you have just been cast in a role that will see a classic war waged between the forces of good and evil–an epic battle that will be played out for all the world to see? You go to a wrestling show obviously.

Daniel Radcliffe shared an old photo of a very young Matthew Lewis, who you might know better as Neville Longbottom, and himself at a WWF show (the old moniker for the WWE) in England from 2001, two days before they started filming the first Harry Potter movie. Radcliffe says that they were brought there by one of the movie’s producers, David Heyman, and the only bummer about this picture is that Rupert Grint who was also there with them isn’t in it too. (He was probably at the concession stand getting another snack.)

Daniel-radcliffe-Young
…..I feel very old right now.

As for what’s actually happening in the picture, he pointed out how everyone else seems to be jeering the entrance of William Regal, but that they “weren’t quite brave enough to boo him.” Well, considering William Regal is English that would have been rude anyway, but even if William Regal was playing a bad guy at the time (known as a “heel” in wrestling lingo), he is totally awesome. So in spite of Radcliffe’s lime green zip-top, looking back on it now they are the coolest people in the photo.

(Because I know at least a couple of you are wondering, Regal lost that night to Chris Jericho.)

Not only did Radcliffe share a cool throwback picture with his fans, he stayed loyal to House Gryffindor and promoted Lewis’s second season of Happy Valley on Netflix. For both the photo and encouraging people to watch his friend’s show we award 50 points to House Gryffindor.

For the lime green top we deduct 10.

Have any other photos of a young Harry Potter cast out there you like? Share them with us too, right here in the comments section below.

Ryan Reynolds Celebrates Deadpool’s Monthiversary With New Ad

Just when you thought Ryan ReynoldsDeadpool social media blitz was taking a pause, he’s back with a new video celebrating the film’s “monthiversary.”

Happy #monthiversary everybody.https://t.co/7bkZgDsXX6

— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) March 11, 2016

The style of the ad replicates Academy Award nominee ads from the late 1990s and earlier part of the century. It also captures many of the elements audiences responded to in the film, including the irreverent tone.

Deadpool is still in theaters, but one imagines Reynolds is already anticipating the home video release.

The Kate Leth/Joe Quinones Tim Burton-Style Batman ’89 Comic That DC Turned Down

by Rich Johnston
tumblr_o3qrjlg77b1r3j9f2o1_1280

Posted by Joe Quinones to his blog yesterday…  Batman ‘89.

tumblr_o3qrjlg77b1r3j9f2o4_1280

Which he describes as,

a bunch of proof of concept art I did for a Batman miniseries pitch Kate Leth and I put together last year.

tumblr_o3qrjlg77b1r3j9f2o3_1280tumblr_o3qrjlg77b1r3j9f2o2_1280

Inspired by DC’s recent Batman ‘66 series, our story would have picked up the threads left by Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. We would have seen the return of Selina Kyle/ Catwoman as well as introductions to ‘Burton-verse’ versions of Robin, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. It also would have showcased the turn of Billy Dee Williams’ Harvey Dent into Two-Face.”

tumblr_o3qrjlg77b1r3j9f2o7_1280 tumblr_o3qrjlg77b1r3j9f2o6_1280

We had a lot of fun ideas for the series overall, but in the end it was turned down. Regardless, these were fun a lot of fun to draw and Kate and I got to bond over our love of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman.

Which of course is ironic, considering what’s happening in the main Catwoman title...

Here’s What Happened When Some Dude Ate Like The Rock For A Month

by Walt Hickey

Mark Webster saw the most ludicrous diet plan on the planet and decided to try it out.

As I wrote last year, the movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, in order to maintain his legendary physique, eats more than 5,000 calories a day. The calories, spread over seven meals, include roughly 2.3 pounds of cod, a fish particularly rich in protein. The rest is eggs, steak, chicken, vegetables and potatoes — all told, about 10 pounds of food per day. In one year, The Rock consumes more than one-third of a ton of cod alone.

Unlike Johnson, Webster is not a former pro wrestler, nor is he a staple of the “Fast and Furious” movie franchise. He does not have a show on HBO. He’s just a normal self-employed guy who’s tried to get in shape over the past couple of years. And when he read about Johnson’s daily routine, he did not feel awe or disgust or fear, but instead saw a life he wanted to try for a month. Here’s that routine:

MEAL CALORIES CARBS TOTAL FAT SATURATED FAT PROTEIN MEAL MASS
Meal 1 610 38g 15g 4g 77g 24oz
Meal 2 594 84 3 1 56 25
Meal 3 1069 125 28 7 72 27
Meal 4 909 121 18 6 62 28
Meal 5 769 69 25 9 70 22
Meal 6 816 115 4 1 73 28
Meal 7 398 14 16 6 50 15
Other 225 5 3 0 47 0

Webster did this from Feb. 1 through March 1 — and chronicled his progress online (I kept in touch with him throughout). The main takeaway: Being The Rock is exhausting, expensive and exactly as rad as you would think.

Based on the data Webster sent me — scrupulously compiled over the course of this exercise — he spent a total of $1,262 on food. That’s about $42 per day, including $18 worth of cod.

So it costs a lot of money to eat like The Rock, but it also takes time. Every two or three days, Webster said, he spent an hour and a half on food prep. He got a break partway through the challenge when he realized the seafood store would just steam-cook the cod on the spot for no charge. Still, making 30 pounds of food every three days is probably the worst part of the process, he said. For a while his only succor was a daily sweet potato.11

Two days-worth of meals.

Two days-worth of meals.

Courtesy of Mark Webster

Eating each of his seven daily meals takes about 20 minutes — two hours and 20 minutes a day just shoving meat and vegetables into his mouth. “The biggest thing with the eating is the interruption of your day,” Webster said. “Every few hours, you have to stop and eat again.”

The Rock diet hasn’t affected Webster’s work life, besides the occasional need to sneak out for his protein fix. “I had business meetings at a different office last week,” he told me, “and I had to bring three meals with me, and eat in a conference room while I was having a meeting with other people.”

To offset the calories, he imitates The Rock and does an hour of cardio and an hour and a half on weights six days a week, with one day of rest. “When I read that in the spring, I was so enamored by it,” Webster said. “How does a human being do that six days a week?”

The exercise routine burns about 3,550 calories every day. “It’s sort of modeled on that workout he did for that movie ‘Hercules,’ and he did that for six months. If I did that for six months, I imagine there would be a pretty significant change in my body.”

From Feb.1 to March 1, he worked out for about 60 hours, an average of two hours per day. In total, that’s about five hours a day spent prepping food, eating food and working out. I’ve checked with my sources, and I’ve learned that there are only 24 hours in a day, so this was a massive time commitment.

The upside? Being The Rock is great.

By the end of the project, Webster’s weight had barely moved — already an active person, he started out at 206 pounds and finished 30 days later at 207 — but he had gained a solid amount of muscle mass.

“My arms have gotten a little bigger, the upper parts of my legs have gotten bigger, and I’ve gotten leaner, which is again totally unexpected,” he said. “I feel amazing. I’m 37, I get little aches and pains all the time; I have none of those anymore. I feel better than I did before I was doing this. My resting heart rate has dropped by like four beats per minute over the past month. I feel fantastic.”

While he does many different kinds of lifts, he estimates his strength has gone up 10 to 15 percent across the board. When he started his Rock routine, his incline bench press was 115 pounds; now it’s 150. He was originally doing 80 repetitions of a 180-pound leg press, but now he’s at 240.

Still, it can be laborious.

“It’s a trade-off,” said Webster, presumably between mouthfuls of Atlantic fish. “Apparently The Rock hasn’t eaten candy since 1989.”

The plan is, surprisingly, not for everyone. “You could definitely not go from couch potato to doing this plan,” Webster told me. “You would probably kill yourself. I’ve spent the last couple of years getting into shape.

“That dude works really really hard,” he said about The Rock. “This is what this guy does; this is his livelihood, the fact that he looks like this and trains like this every day of his life while making his movies, being on set 14 hours — that kind of discipline to me is absolutely amazing. To me this is less about ‘Can I look like him?’ and more about ‘Can I work as hard as this dude?’”

In the end, I felt terrible that our interview took time away from Webster that could otherwise have been spent preparing cod. Dwayne Johnson is incredible, and even the best of us can manage being him for only a month.

How to Lie to a Child

by Scott Meyer

We all joke about how weird the traditions of telling kids about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are, but, when looked at from a parent’s point of view, they both have a certain utility.

The Easter Bunny hiding eggs gives the parent two different wholesome activities to entertain their kids with: egg dyeing and egg hunting. Also, along with the bounty of Easter candy (which, let’s be honest, is usually some pretty cheap candy—it’s the only food that you actually dress up by putting it in a pile of fake grass), it gets them eating healthy, inexpensive hard boiled eggs.

Santa Claus supplies parents with a mythical figurehead to whom they can direct their kids’ begging, and who they can use as a scapegoat when that begging proves fruitless.

“Don’t tell me what you want for Christmas. Make a list for Santa.”

“You didn’t get the expensive thing you want? That wasn’t my decision. It was Santa. Maybe you weren’t good enough this year. You should probably try to be better next year.”

There’s also the Tooth Fairy, who serves to distract kids from the fact that their teeth are falling out of their heads for no apparent reason, and that soon a new, larger tooth will erupt out of their tender mouth-flesh to replace it. I’d say keeping your kid from obsessing about that is well worth a quarter.

Confirmed: THE DARK TOWER will Star Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey

by Kyle Anderson

Sometimes it’s nice to just have rumors and speculation confirmed from the highest of sources, isn’t it? After months of assumptions and probabilities, we got the Twitter-verse’s equivalent of a press release, which translates to a “nailed it” to all of the entertainment pundits waxing theoretical. Author Stephen King has confirmed via Twitter that Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey will indeed star in the long-awaited big screen adaptation of his beloved book series The Dark Tower, as gunslinger Roland Deschain and his nemesis the Man in Black, respectively.

King’s book series has been been up for either a movie franchise or a television franchise, possibly HBO, for years now. He spoke to EW and revealed the movie will take place in “our day, in the modern world,” and that aside from beginning with the first line of the first book, the movie’s plot will actually pick up in the middle of the story, possibly to the chagrin of some fans. But with a massive literary tome like this, it’d be silly to expect a direct page-to-screen relation.

For their part, the two actors also took to Twitter to engage in some friendly “we’re about to play enemies in a film” banter.

Elba will play the series’ hero, the first book’s titular Gunslinger, a man in a wasteland who has to walk across the country in order to reach the fabled Dark Tower. Standing in his way will be McConaughey’s black-clad uber villain (a.k.a. Walter Padick or Walter O’Dim). Roland will then have to gather a group of other heroes to help make the journey, though no word yet on who might be cast as those characters.

It’s definitely in good hands with actors of this level of talent and standing, so we’re about as stoked as anyone can be to see how this project all comes together. And we truly won’t have all that long to wait; The Dark Tower movie is slated to be released Jan 13, 2017. (Really? January? What are release dates anymore?!?!)

What do you think about this casting? Are you prepared to trudge across the land with these two? Let us know in the comments below!
