A Folha de quinta-feira trouxe quadrinhos de Angeli, Allan Sieber, Caco Galhardo, André Dahmer, Adão Iturrusgarai e Fernando Gonsales feitos para protestar contra a permanência de Marco Feliciano (PSC-SP) na presidência da Comissão de Direitos Humanos. In 1982 Richard Feynman and his friend Tom Van Sant met in Geneva and decided to visit the physics lab at CERN. “There was a giant machine that was going to be rolled into the line of the particle accelerator,” Van Sant remembered later. “The machine was maybe the size of a two-story building, on tracks, with lights and bulbs and dials and scaffolds all around, with men climbing all over it.

“Feynman said, ‘What experiment is this?’

“The director said, ‘Why, this is an experiment to test the charge-change something-or-other under such-and-such circumstances.’ But he stopped suddenly, and he said, ‘I forgot! This is your theory of charge-change, Dr. Feynman! Per Software generiert er Nano-Modelle in einer Software und fügt die zu 3D-Printer-Collagen zusammen, oder so ähnlich. Ich liebe es, wie der Promo-Text der Galerie am Ende in einem Future-Gibberish mündet: „chmodder-fodder for smartdustormin’ mass-mod-mood-meds runnin’ on you runnin’ on hyper-necker-deathcubes“. Das Technobabble ist fast schon interessanter, als die Arbeiten selbst. Aber nur fast.

The ends of an airplane’s wings generate vortices that stretch back in the wake of the plane. Most of the time these vortices are invisible, even if their effects on lift are distinctive. Here an A-340 coming in for a foggy landing demonstrates the size and strength of these vortices. Notice how the fog gets swept up and away by the vortices. Alexander Graham Bell, apesar de ser considerado o inventor do telefone (há controvérsias) não deixou nenhuma gravação de sua voz (ao menos não de fácil acesso às gerações futuras), então as pessoas simplesmente não sabiam como ele falava e se ele possuía algum sotaque, já que ele era natural da Escócia e viveu na Inglaterra e Estados Unidos. Nos últimos anos de sua vida ele fixou residência na Ilha Cape Breton, no Canadá, um dos poucos lugares do mundo em que ainda se fala gaélico, e lá é o dialeto principal.

A única pessoa que conheceu Bell ainda viva era sua neta, Dra. Mabel Grosvenor, uma pediatra de Washington. Quando entrevistada em 2004 ela já tinha 99 anos, mas mesmo assim permanecia lúcida. Ela disse que ele falava “como a entrevistadora” – no caso uma britânica que imigrou cedo para o Canadá. Quando a Dra. Mabel faleceu em 2006, o último link com alguém que conheceu a voz Graham Bell se foi, ou assim se pensava.

Entre 1880 e 1886, Bell e seus associados conduziram diversos experimentos para gravação de voz usando os mais díspares materiais — de cera a gesso, passando por papel e vidro —, porém os métodos empregados por ele se perderam no tempo. Os mais de 400 discos e cilindros doados ao Instituto Smithsoniano não são mais do que “registros mudos”, segundo a curadora do Museu de História Natural Carlene Stephens.

Exceto que um físico chamado Carl Haber, do Laboratório Nacional de Berkeley, conseguira recuperar áudios ainda mais antigos, dos anos 1860. Stephens o contatou em 2011 e começaram a decodificar o material, a maior parte bem danificada e por isso, ilegível, usando luz e uma câmera 3D, que permite analisar os sulcos do disco e convertê-lo em áudio digital.

Dentre as várias gravações foram identificadas sequências numéricas e citações de Hamlet, mas um disco, datado de 15 de abril de 1885, era especial – ele é assinado por Graham Bell e poderia conter sua voz. Após submetê-lo à técnica, eis o resultado, uma frase nítida em alto e bom som, em que ele diz:

“Hear my voice. Alexander Graham Bell.”

Os técnicos também identificaram a voz de seu pai, Alexander Melville Bell, em uma gravação de 1881.

É no mínimo arrepiante pensar que uma gravação tão antiga ficado pelo menos 128 anos sem que ninguém pudesse ouví-la, e ainda hoje sua voz soa tão clara. Quem sabe o que mais há nas outras gravações?

“Quando penso nos meus filhos, hoje com dez e cinco anos, um dia podendo colocar em seus currículos que têm ‘português fluente’, me sinto satisfeita”. O relato é da correspondente da revista The Economist à publicação americana More Intelligent Life, que publica um texto em que defende que o idioma falado no Brasil é o melhor para se aprender no mundo atual.

Segundo a revista, o português falado no Brasil é o melhor “investimento” em termos de estudo de línguas. A justificativa da publicação parte do tamanho da população brasileira, da perspectiva da economia do país, da importância do Brasil no mundo, da relativamente baixa dificuldade de aprender o idioma e da sua utilidade no mundo.
