The Bizarre Tale of 'ISIS Book Club'

by Damaris Colhoun

The stash of books about ancient coins and Egyptian pyramids seemed to belong more in a 1950s library in Germany than on the back of a truck filled with shoulder-fired missiles. Then again, if you’re an Islamic State fighter with plans to loot and sell antiquities to the West in order to fund your cause, it helps to know which objects to look for.

How ISIS fighters came into possession of the books was anybody’s guess. But amid a stream of reports that the group is looting and destroying precious cultural heritage in Syria and Iraq, the news of the volumes sparked a miniature flurry of detective work on Twitter.

The library’s appearance in a photograph on the Conflict Antiquities blog, alongside a post about a cache of hundreds of antiquities and receipts that were seized by U.S. Special Forces members, was reportedly “the first material proof” that the Islamic State was trafficking antiquities.

Driven largely by archaeologists and numismatists, the stream of retweets and pleas for help–“it’s a super-long shot, but does anyone recognize this book?” one tweet read–quickly yielded fruit. Recognizing the ancient Phoenician coins that appear one of the pages, the numismatist Ute Wartenberg correctly identified it as a scholarly tome that isn’t easy to come by: La Syrie Sous la Domination Achéménide by Maurice Sartre.

It's a super-long shot, but, does anyone recognise this book? #archaeology? #coins? #numismatics? v @hasavrat pic.twitter.com/NxDaDrDKI9

— Sam Hardy (@samarkeolog) June 4, 2015

“It’s not a book that you look up. It’s not even one that you can find in a bookstore. It would be one that you would find in an academic library,” says Sam Hardy, the author of Conflict Antiquities and a specialist in illicit antiquities. “It suggests that they’re making educated choices.” The other titles were identified as German-language books on the pyramids of Egypt.

As for the seized receipts, they dated back to the 1980s, prompting a slew of other questions. Where were the objects headed? Who was buying them? What would an ISIS book club look like and was it an accurate predictor of where its readers might strike next (for instance, the pyramids of Egypt)? Was this really “the first material proof” that the Islamic State has been trafficking antiquities?

According to Hardy, not exactly. “In terms of evidence, this is not significant in any new way. It just confirms what we already know, that items have been strategically trafficked in and out of Syria and the region, by various actors inside and outside the state, long before ISIS was ever around,” Hardy says.

Yet his posts can provide a glimpse into how archaeologists and other antiquity experts are documenting the extent to which antiquities are being traded and destroyed by the Islamic State. Like Hardy, many such experts are not on the ground in Syria, but are working from other countries. So instead of using shovels and picks, they are relying on digital tools like satellite imagery, Twitter, and open source sites like Bellingcat to excavate information and bring it to the public.

article-imageA lamassu at the North West Palace of Ashurnasirpal II, in Nimrud, Iraq. It was reported that the site was destroyed by ISIS in 2015. (Photo: Public Domain/WikiCommons)

And by crowd sourcing their knowledge, such experts are fleshing out details and context in ways that mainstream news outlets cannot. A recent post by the Association for the Protection of Syrian Archaeology showing an image of the license that the Islamic State granted to excavators, to curry funds and local favor, is a good example of academic investigators diving into the weeds. Other sites like this include Pocket Change, and the blog run by the British archaeologist Paul Bradford.

What’s more, these ad hoc digital efforts seem to mirror the ad hoc efforts of archaeologists that are working in conflict zones. Despite recent moves to stop the destruction and looting, the international community can only do so much. Demand for these objects is high (the U.S. is one of the largest importers). And major museums and institutions like UNESCO, which typically partner with local museums and organizations, are hamstrung in a place like Syria, where the regime is an international pariah and 70% of the country is controlled by rebels. As a result, most efforts to save a site from being looted or destroyed are being led by individual actors.

“Forging strategic partnerships with the Syrian state is nearly impossible, so the protection of the sites is often left to local activists, local NGOs, local archaeologists and museum curators, who are trying to do what they can, for the most part pretty much unsupported,” says Amr Al-Azm, a professor of Middle East history at Shawnee State University, and former head of the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Damascus.

“Let me be clear, this is not a single network, this is a multiplicity of networks,” says Azm. “These partners are trying to find some sort of financial assistance to keep them going and get the information out.” Azm says that the archaeological networks are often fractured by competition. “You have a clique in Berlin, a clique in Paris, a clique in London, a clique in Italy, a clique in Spain, you have some mad Dutch antique books dealers. It’s very, very ad hoc.”

article-imageThe Lion of Al-lāt in Palmyra, Syria, from early 1st century AD. It was destroyed by ISIS on 27 June 2015. (Photo: Mappo/WikiCommons CC BY-SA 4.0)

Azm says he personally has about 20 to 30 people on the ground in Syria who are relaying information back to him and running missions to save precious sites. Mother Jones recently reported how Azm’s network saved one of the largest corpus of mosaics in Syria by packing it into sandbags three months before it was barrel bombed. Other groups are performing similar rescue missions across the country.

“Oftentimes ISIS is coming into one side of town while our trucks are rolling out of the other. It’s stuff that movies are made of,” Azm says.

At the same time, he is exasperated by the media’s obsession with ISIS and antiquities, especially when it obscures the complicity of the Syrian regime, international smuggling routes, and the market in the West. “I am sure there is some mongol warlord looting in outer Mongolia but no one cares. The minute ISIS raises the black flag, everyone wants to talk about it.”

Hardy agrees: “I just called it a book club because some Islamic State activists follow my blog, so I think it's good to make them sound ridiculous as well as repulsive. But it does show that they are very organized in their criminal activities.”

Scandinavian Diary

by kokkap2
Wondrous Stories Born from One’s Imagination

Scandinavian Diary is a textile by Danish designer Lisa Grue, who is active in illustration and graphic work for fashion magazines and fashion brands. Grue says, “Since I was a child I have always been captured by getting magic into my everyday life. To make my life full of colors, joy, music, flowers, laugh etc. I love making dinner parties with themes, to set the table with flowers from my city garden, old Scandinavian porcelain, beautiful tablecloths etc. Making movie nights with my girlfriends seeing romantic films and eating luxury chocolate and cupcakes and drinking tea in English teacups. Picking eatable thing in the forest and making jam, fruit juices and mushroom risotto. Like really trying to make my days enchanting and worth remembering. The “Scandinavian Diary” are different motifs that pops up in my head, and reminds me of getting the magic in my life. “

“This is a motif that came to me once I walked in the Scandinavian forest. Actually in Sweden. The forests in Sweden can be full of mystery I think. Like a fairytale with animals that speaks. Animals that are friendly and wants to help you. This is how it popped up in my head.” (by Lisa Grue)

Owls JG50300-301 Cotton Linen Canvas

“I find owls very magical. And these owls are full of stories they have seen in the forest in Scandinavia. What they tell is up to the viewer, and that is the enchanting thing about illustrations. We all make our different stories in our heads. These owls says things to me like: “There is Magic on the Moon” “Take care little Sister” “Be Wise” “We are the new Superheroes.” (by Lisa Grue)

Babushka JG50300-302 Cotton Linen Canvas

“When I was a little girl I had a Babushka. And I was really excited about that inside the big babushka there is a smaller babushka and inside that babushka there is a even smaller Babushka and so on. It like inside every story there is another story, and another story and so on. If you bring the same wisdom into life, then there is always something new to explore.” (by Lisa Grue)

northeastnature:

Here are four words that should never be together. This is a chocolate tube slime mold (Stemonitis sp.). It’s related to the stereotypical blob-like amoebae you may have seen in science class. The cells of this creature live independently, but they come together to form reproductive structures like the ones shown above. Here’s an incredible time-lapse video of part of the process.

Kyle McLachlan’s Special Agent Dale Cooper will “encounter a fresh crop of quirky locals (this is in addition to lots of familiar faces)” in the new installment, according to TV Line.

According to the publication, series creator David Lynch is “adopting a rather unorthodox audition process” to find these “new oddballs.”

“Rumor has it he’s asking prospective new cast members to prepare and perform a lengthy monologue about themselves. Also, he’s specifically looking for interesting, character-y, preferably unknown actors,” the media outlet continued.“

Shooting Down Drones

by Bruce Schneier
Russian Sledges

via firehose

A Kentucky man shot down a drone that was hovering in his backyard:

"It was just right there," he told Ars. "It was hovering, I would never have shot it if it was flying. When he came down with a video camera right over my back deck, that's not going to work. I know they're neat little vehicles, but one of those uses shouldn't be flying into people's yards and videotaping."

Minutes later, a car full of four men that he didn't recognize rolled up, "looking for a fight."

"Are you the son of a bitch that shot my drone?" one said, according to Merideth.

His terse reply to the men, while wearing a 10mm Glock holstered on his hip: "If you cross that sidewalk onto my property, there's going to be another shooting."

He was arrested, but what's the law?

In the view of drone lawyer Brendan Schulman and robotics law professor Ryan Calo, home owners can't just start shooting when they see a drone over their house. The reason is because the law frowns on self-help when a person can just call the police instead. This means that Meredith may not have been defending his house, but instead engaging in criminal acts and property damage for which he could have to pay.

But a different and bolder argument, put forward by law professor Michael Froomkin, could provide Meredith some cover. In a paper, Froomkin argues that it's reasonable to assume robotic intrusions are not harmless, and that people may have a right to "employ violent self-help."

Froomkin's paper is well worth reading:

Abstract: Robots can pose -- or can appear to pose -- a threat to life, property, and privacy. May a landowner legally shoot down a trespassing drone? Can she hold a trespassing autonomous car as security against damage done or further torts? Is the fear that a drone may be operated by a paparazzo or a peeping Tom sufficient grounds to disable or interfere with it? How hard may you shove if the office robot rolls over your foot? This paper addresses all those issues and one more: what rules and standards we could put into place to make the resolution of those questions easier and fairer to all concerned.

The default common-law legal rules governing each of these perceived threats are somewhat different, although reasonableness always plays an important role in defining legal rights and options. In certain cases -- drone overflights, autonomous cars, national, state, and even local regulation -- may trump the common law. Because it is in most cases obvious that humans can use force to protect themselves against actual physical attack, the paper concentrates on the more interesting cases of (1) robot (and especially drone) trespass and (2) responses to perceived threats other than physical attack by robots notably the risk that the robot (or drone) may be spying - perceptions which may not always be justified, but which sometimes may nonetheless be considered reasonable in law.

We argue that the scope of permissible self-help in defending one's privacy should be quite broad. There is exigency in that resort to legally administered remedies would be impracticable; and worse, the harm caused by a drone that escapes with intrusive recordings can be substantial and hard to remedy after the fact. Further, it is common for new technology to be seen as risky and dangerous, and until proven otherwise drones are no exception. At least initially, violent self-help will seem, and often may be, reasonable even when the privacy threat is not great -- or even extant. We therefore suggest measures to reduce uncertainties about robots, ranging from forbidding weaponized robots to requiring lights, and other markings that would announce a robot's capabilities, and RFID chips and serial numbers that would uniquely identify the robot's owner.

The paper concludes with a brief examination of what if anything our survey of a person's right to defend against robots might tell us about the current state of robot rights against people.

Note that there are drones that shoot back.

Here are two books that talk about these topics. And an article from 2012.

EDITED TO ADD (8/9): How to shoot down a drone.

Kraft Recalls Cheese Because People Are Choking on the Plastic

by Sam Frizell

That might be the last burger you’ll ever eat.

Kraft has recalled some American cheese singles after reports of several Americans choking on plastic wrapping. Some sections of the plastic may remain connected to the cheese after it’s unwrapped, causing three Americans to choke and 10 complaints, according to a company statement.

The recall applies to 3- and 4-pound sizes of Kraft Singles American and White American pasteurized prepared cheese with a use-by date of December 29, 2015 to January 4, 2016. That’s about 36,000 cases of the recalled product in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Grand Cayman.

“We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed,” Kraft said.

Rescuing Wonderful Shivery Tales

by Marina Warner
Russian Sledges

obsessed with this book

'In 2009 the news that around five hundred fairy tales, collected by the nineteenth-century ethnographer Franz Xaver von Schönwerth, had been found in the Regensburg municipal library in Germany created headlines. The Grimms have achieved one of their ambitions: nobody casually exterminates fairy tales. The scholar Erika Eichenseer sifted and transcribed and published them in German as Prinz Rosszwifl (Prince Dung Beetle); in English they have now appeared under the less rebarbative title The Turnip Princess. The eminent Harvard professor of comparative literature Maria Tatar acts as the presiding good fairy at this christening, and lively and lucid as ever, has translated, introduced, and annotated around seventy stories, making for an anthology comparable in size to the Grimms’ first edition.

'An enthusiastic folklorist working in Bavaria, Schönwerth, a contemporary of the Grimms, saw his task in the same terms as the brothers: to rescue local storytelling from extinction. Jacob Grimm knew of his work and praised it highly (“No one in Germany has gathered tales so thoughtfully and thoroughly and with such finesse”), yet strangely Schönwerth does not appear among their contributors, and Zipes is also silent on the subject. Schönwerth’s collection has some of the same stories as the Grimms (e.g., “Seven with One Blow”) and shares many motifs and characters—with variations. There are also migrants and blow-ins from the Arabian Nights (“The Beautiful Slave Girl”). But it presents interesting differences because, above all, as Tatar points out, his Cinderellas, tricksters, and even blond beauties are male.'

News in Brief: Black Man Bids Tearful Goodbye To Family Before Daily Commute

MILWAUKEE—Frequently choking back tears, African-American computer technician Michael Shaw bid an emotional goodbye to his wife and 6-year-old son before making his morning commute Thursday, sources confirmed. “I don’t know when or if I’ll see you guys next, so I just want you to know how much I love you,” Shaw said, his voice breaking as he prepared to embark on the 25-minute trip, including a stop at a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru, from which he might not return. “Kevin, you take care of Mommy. Whatever might happen before I get to the office, you have to be strong, okay?” According to sources, Shaw then grabbed his briefcase and his car keys and took one last look over his shoulder before opening the front door and walking down the lawn to the driveway.
