A philosophical perspective:

But while Descartes's overall view has been rightly rejected, there is something profoundly right about the connection between privacy and the self, something that recent events should cause us to appreciate. What is right about it, in my view, is that to be an autonomous person is to be capable of having privileged access (in the two senses defined above) to information about your psychological profile ­ your hopes, dreams, beliefs and fears. A capacity for privacy is a necessary condition of autonomous personhood.

To get a sense of what I mean, imagine that I could telepathically read all your conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings -- I could know about them in as much detail as you know about them yourself -- and further, that you could not, in any way, control my access. You don't, in other words, share your thoughts with me; I take them. The power I would have over you would of course be immense. Not only could you not hide from me, I would know instantly a great amount about how the outside world affects you, what scares you, what makes you act in the ways you do. And that means I could not only know what you think, I could to a large extent control what you do.

That is the political worry about the loss of privacy: it threatens a loss of freedom. And the worry, of course, is not merely theoretical. Targeted ad programs, like Google's, which track your Internet searches for the purpose of sending you ads that reflect your interests can create deeply complex psychological profiles -- especially when one conducts searches for emotional or personal advice information: Am I gay? What is terrorism? What is atheism? If the government or some entity should request the identity of the person making these searches for national security purposes, we'd be on the way to having a real-world version of our thought experiment.

But the loss of privacy doesn't just threaten political freedom. Return for a moment to our thought experiment where I telepathically know all your thoughts whether you like it or not From my perspective, the perspective of the knower -- your existence as a distinct person would begin to shrink. Our relationship would be so lopsided that there might cease to be, at least to me, anything subjective about you. As I learn what reactions you will have to stimuli, why you do what you do, you will become like any other object to be manipulated. You would be, as we say, dehumanized.

Suppose that, at a given moment, a certain number of people are engaged in the manufacture of pins. They make as many pins as the world needs, working (say) eight hours a day. Someone makes an invention by which the same number of men can make twice as many pins: pins are already so cheap that hardly any more will be bought at a lower price. In a sensible world, everybody concerned in the manufacturing of pins would take to working four hours instead of eight, and everything else would go on as before. But in the actual world this would be thought demoralizing. The men still work eight hours, there are too many pins, some employers go bankrupt, and half the men previously concerned in making pins are thrown out of work. There is, in the end, just as much leisure as on the other plan, but half the men are totally idle while half are still overworked. In this way, it is insured that the unavoidable leisure shall cause misery all round instead of being a universal source of happiness. Can anything more insane be imagined?

"Descobri que há vários planetas habitados, porque muita gente não vive no mesmo planeta onde eu estou", foi mais ou menos isso que a Cris (http://kikacastro.wordpress.com/) escreveu em algum lugar e eu só posso concordar com ela. Na quarta-feira passada, por exemplo, depois da quase-guerra na Praça Sete, um quase-ET me abordou. Eram cerca de onze horas da noite, eu estava na esquina das ruas Tupis com São Paulo junto com outros repórteres, fotógrafos e motoristas do jornal, já preparando para voltar à redação, quando ele atravessou a rua driblando os cacos de vidros, os estilhaços de bomba, as marcas de pneus, as portas de lojas retorcidas, tirou o fone do ouvido e, com a voz mansa e muito educadamente, me perguntou:

- Por favor, você pode me informar se aconteceu alguma coisa por aqui?

Eu esperei alguns segundos tentando entender o contexto da pergunta, mas ele ficou me olhando esperando a resposta. Eu disse:

- Olha, tinham 50 mil pessoas na rua, elas foram protestando até a Pampulha, voltaram, um grupo enfrentou a polícia, teve bomba, tiro, pedrada, spray de pimenta, correria. Foi isso que aconteceu.

Ele arregalou os olhos como se no planeta onde ele viveu nas últimas três semanas não tivesse chegado nenhuma notícia da existência dos protestos, agradeceu, recolocou o fone, atravessou a rua meio atônito e sentou num banquinho no ponto de ônibus e ficou olhando em volta, aparentemente tentando imaginar as cenas que eu tinha descrito.

Modeling can be a rather difficult business, with your career literally hanging on your appearance. Think of it like this: Most models don’t make it because one of the few who got chosen just happened to look a certain way.

Jourdan Dunn was cut from the Christian Dior Couture fashion show this morning for a reason that most men would have no problem with. Her boobs are too big. You read that right.

Model Jourdan Dunn didn’t take the news too hard either. In fact, she actually laughed it off. Apparently her chest size was too large for the clothes the fashion show wanted to display. The model took to Twitter, saying, “Ahahahahahaha I just [got] cancelled from Dior because of my boobs! I [love] fashion #Couture.”

Jourdan Dunn immediately added, “I’m normally told I’m canceled because I’m ‘colored’ so being canceled because [of] my boobs is a minor.”

It seems odd that a model’s boobs being too big would be a problem, but perhaps the outfits are meant for petite women or smaller cups and having voluminous mammaries would border on being indecent.

As for being the wrong color, it’s just another example of how much pressure models have to deal with. In real life, any woman can be beautiful in her own way, but what looks good to one may not be right for others.

In an interview with The Edit, Jourdan Dunn said she had been turned down a lot because clients “didn’t want any more black girls,” and one beautician who happened to be white said she didn’t want to put makeup on her face for the same reason.

Something similar happened with Filippa Hamilton, who was let go from Ralph Lauren because she gained weight and couldn’t fit their clothes any more, so Jourdan Dunn isn’t that put off for being rejected because her boobs are too big.

Two of the biggest problems with passwords is how hard it is to make a secure one and how difficult those are to remember. Solve both problems by using an assortment of vocabulary words to learn.

As we (and xkcd) have discussed before, longer, multi-word passwords are harder to crack than short ones with a bunch of random characters in them. Since you're already in the neighborhood, you may as well exercise your spelling skills at the same time by choosing some miscellaneous hard-to-spell words. This way, you'll get in the rhythm of typing them correctly. If you're looking for a few, here's one of the many lists of commonly misspelled words the internet has to offer.

Of course, the one downside to this is that some places have character limits for passwords or even require short lengths and extra characters. In many cases there's nothing you can do about that, though an email to the company asking for more complex password options couldn't hurt.

On his blog, Scott Adams suggests that it might be possible to identify sociopaths based on their interactions on social media.

My hypothesis is that science will someday be able to identify sociopaths and terrorists by their patterns of Facebook and Internet use. I'll bet normal people interact with Facebook in ways that sociopaths and terrorists couldn't duplicate.

Anyone can post fake photos and acquire lots of friends who are actually acquaintances. But I'll bet there are so many patterns and tendencies of "normal" use on Facebook that a terrorist wouldn't be able to successfully fake it.

Okay, but so what? Imagine you had such an amazingly accurate test...then what? Do we investigate those who test positive, even though there's no suspicion that they've actually done anything? Do we follow them around? Subject them to additional screening at airports? Throw them in jail because we know the streets will be safer because of it? Do we want to live in a Minority Report world?

The problem isn't just that such a system is wrong, it's that the mathematics of testing makes this sort of thing pretty ineffective in practice. It's called the "base rate fallacy." Suppose you have a test that's 90% accurate in identifying both sociopaths and non-sociopaths. If you assume that 4% of people are sociopaths, then the chance of someone who tests positive actually being a sociopath is 26%. (For every thousand people tested, 90% of the 40 sociopaths will test positive, but so will 10% of the 960 non-sociopaths.) You have postulate a test with an amazing 99% accuracy -- only a 1% false positive rate -- even to have an 80% chance of someone testing positive actually being a sociopath.

This fallacy isn't new. It's the same thinking that caused us to intern Japanese-Americans during World War II, stop people in their cars because they're black, and frisk them at airports because they're Muslim. It's the same thinking behind massive NSA surveillance programs like PRISM. It's one of the things that scares me about police DNA databases.

Many authors have written stories about thoughtcrime. Who has written about genecrime?

We understand the concept [Jean] used to create a 3D scan of his face, but the particulars are a bit beyond our own experience. He is not using a dark room and laser line to capture slices which can be reassembled later. Nope, this approach uses pictures taken with several different focal lengths.

The idea is to process the photos using luminance. It looks at a pixel and it’s neighbors, subtracting the luminance and summing the absolute values to estimate how well that pixel is in focus. Apparently if you do this with the entire image, and a set of other images taken from the same vantage point with different focal lengths, you end up with a depth map of pixels.

What we find most interesting about this is the resulting pixels retain their original color values. So after removing the cruft you get a 3D scan that is still in full color.

Continuing a series of interviews with designers and artists that bring user interfaces and graphics to the big screens, today I’m honored to host Joseph Chan. You have seen his work on “Tron: Legacy” and “Oblivion”, as well as one quite a few motion ad campaigns for companies such as Sony, Google, HP, Intel, Blackberry and others.

Kirill: Please tell us about yourself and how you started in the field.

Joseph: I’m a motion graphic designer and I’ve been working in the industry since 2007. I graduated from Pasadena Art Center in 2006 with a degree in graphic design, specializing in motion graphics.

Before that I attended UC Irvine, I didn’t have a major and was deciding what I wanted to do as a career, and it was around the year 2000 when the .com boom was in full force. It was a great and inspiring time for me, people were designing amazing abstract graphics from 3D programs that I had never seen before. I learned Photoshop and put together a portfolio with personal projects that I did in my spare time. After I was accepted into Art Center, I transitioned from graphic design into motion design which had started to ramp up midway through my college years.

Kirill: What happened after you graduated?

Joseph: During school I took two internships. One was in an interactive design studio, creating graphics and content for websites. In my latter terms at Art Center, I took a class with Chris Do who owns and operates Blind which does motion graphics, and I interned under him and Tom Koh. From then on I decided to focus entirely on motion graphics.

Kirill: And here you’re not talking about Flash / VRML containers that were very popular at that time in the browser environment.

Joseph: I wasn’t into the technical side of Flash or into creating websites. I was mainly using it as a tool for simple layer and text animations, because that was what people used at the time. But the designers who were using Flash in amazing ways, creating beautiful websites full of motion really caught my eye and pushed me towards my career.

Kirill: So back to what you did after graduating…

Joseph: I graduated in mid December in 2007, took some time off for the holidays, and started freelancing at different motion graphics studios around LA and Santa Monica, and I’ve been doing it ever since. I’ve never been staff at a studio before, at this point in my career I feel freelancing is the way to go as I have a little bit more freedom in terms of studio and project choices.

Kirill: Are you also involved in art direction / concept design?

Joseph: Sometimes I am brought in to a project midway or near the tail-end, so therefore I won’t be as involved with the concept as someone who had been on the project since the beginning. So in that scenario I’d be helping out with animation and finishing. Other times I am brought in from the pitch phase, and that includes art direction, concepting, and designing. I do enjoy all parts of the process, designing and animating, and personally I like to find a balance between the two, trying not to do too much of one thing for long stretches of time.

Kirill: You’ve worked on projects with rather different styles. For example, the spot for the first launch of Google Chrome, the recent spot for Google Now and the one for the Gates foundation are semi-vintage illustration style, while Beats Envy and Sony spots have a very modern high-tech industrial feel. Do you like exploring radically different styles?

Joseph: Absolutely. I’m influenced by all kinds of different styles and I try not to limit myself to a particular one per se. I’d like to think that each project has a different and unique solution, so I keep my mind open to what the project asks for.

Kirill: How many people do you usually have collaborating on a single spot?

Joseph: It all depends on the project and what it entails. The spot for Google – compared to other big budget projects that I’ve worked on – was quite simple from the start and we knew that. We did everything from concept to delivery – illustrations, design, compositing and animations – with a team of four people. The spot for Beats Envy also had a small team, but it was a little bit more complicated due to the need for 3D modeling and animation. I worked on the UI designs, compositing of 2D and 3D elements, and the overall grade. The team was four or five people. And then of course we had producers and the creative directors.

Kirill: Was the spot for Sony more complex?

Joseph: The UI and graphic design, a little bit. We had a small graphics team in charge of about 30 screens, so that was a bit daunting. But the direction was very open and we had time to experiment in Cinema 4D and After Effects.

With regard to the overall project, it wasn’t too complex. We weren’t in charge of compositing the graphics so we did our own thing and handed it off.

Kirill: On a spot such as Sony, do you limit the design to be just beyond the edge of what is generally available in consumer electronics and software? Do you aim to create something explicitly futuristic?

Joseph: I feel designers are best when they aren’t constrained by the software. My philosophy is to really design without worrying too much about the technical limitations. That way, the design will be the best possible solution, and that rings true for animation as well. It can always be pushed, experimented with, and figured out.

On a spot such as the Sony Mouse & Cat, we were given free reign on the look of the UI, so naturally the designs were quite far out, futuristic. I think it fit quite well with the techy nature of the campaign.

Kirill: And then a few years ago you worked on “Tron: Legacy”. How was the transition to working on a much bigger project?

Joseph: I always wanted to work on something related to film, especially in the sci-fi genre because of the futurism involved. There’s always a lot of potential there, and I was very happy to be a part of Tron: Legacy. It was unlike anything that I’ve worked on. Not just being involved with and experiencing the massive Digital Domain pipeline (we were a small team of graphic designers and animators sitting in a small corner surrounded by them). But also knowing that your work is going to be viewed by people from all over the world, really challenged and inspired me.

We were creating our content with the usual toolsets (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, C4D), with the exception of some generative art, and handed the results off to the compositors.

Kirill: What is compositing?

Joseph: The compositors take the graphics that we’ve created – 2D or 3D – and implement them into the shots. It’s the layering of these separate objects, put together in order to get the final picture.

Kirill: And then you reunited with most of the people on the same team to work on “Oblivion”. How was it?

Joseph: It was fun. It was pretty much the same team, with a few newcomers. Gmunk contacted me to bring me in, and opined that it wasn’t going to be as big as Tron: Legacy, but it was with the same director (Joe Kosinski), with a lot of freedom to do what we do, so I was immediately on board.

It was also exciting for me because I took on much larger role than on Tron: Legacy. This time I was able to be involved with the project from pre-production to post, and that allowed me to have more design and animation input.

Kirill: How are you preventing yourself from falling into the trap of not using the same graphic and animation elements in different projects?

Joseph: Sometimes recycling ideas, elements or animation is required for the sake of time and to make ones’ life easier, but personally I try to push myself to learn something new, perhaps something that I’m not comfortable with, in the projects that I work on. It could be a very small or big thing, but I feel it’s a good challenge. In order not to fall into the trap of rehashing things, you just have to be aware of it.

Kirill: How did you handle the on-set playback schedule of “Oblivion”?

Joseph: The Light Table was shot on set, so we made sure that the graphics looped, with startup and turnoff animations. We packaged everything and delivered it to a company called i.Solve who took our graphics and ran them through their software. They were on set, controlling the specific timings of each animation.

Kirill: And then you had screen designs for the automatic drones. They don’t really need to project that information for themselves, but you also can’t just show a blank screen. You need to support the narrative with some kind of a menacing automated scanning interface.

Joseph: It’s part of the magic of designing these interfaces because we’re essentially creating stylized, almost exaggerated versions of information that may not make perfect sense in the real world. Like you said, the drones would obviously not display information for themselves, but we decided to allow it anyways while also maintaining its menace, danger and mystery.

Kirill: Are you concerned about how this work will look like in 15-20 years? How it will have “survived” the actual technological advances known to that future audience?

Joseph: I’m not too concerned. Things change, technology, styles, taste. New things will get introduced and change the way we think and that’s just the nature of it.

I guess if you look back at Oblivion in 15-20 years, it’d be like looking into a little time capsule, where you can see the choices we made based on the technology available at the time. Our research and influences–the functionality of interfaces and HUDs that exist today–reflect the times, and we used that as a base to make sure it was grounded in reality.

We also looked at other interfaces to see what others have come up with. Movies, video games, all have great examples of what others have thought up. I think we’re all in the same camp where we don’t really know what the future may hold, but we’re excited and we’re inventing as we go along.

Kirill: Are you comfortable with having this work described as Fantasy UIs?

Joseph: I think that’s a nice way to put it. Technology is all about enriching humans in some way or another, so inventing the design, look, and animation of how we interact with new technology really gives it that fantasy element.

It’d be a totally different beast if we were designing for real life applications though. The research and development process alone would take years, every detail has to have a real function. So it’s nice working with Fantasy UIs.

Kirill: How were you able to validate some of the explorations for this big light table in “Oblivion”?

Joseph: The Light Table was basically three flat screens horizontally and one that went vertical. Joseph Kosinski [director], the director, decided to use HDTVs and even shared a photo of himself sitting and interacting with a screen laid flat just to give us a sense of scale. So the design fit the 1080p dimensions of the screens perfectly.

The main section was the map which the character in the movie, Vika, interacts mainly with. Then we had a Drone monitor, HydroRig monitor, and a weather map, which took up the vertical screen.

After the design phase we took a trip to i.Solve’s studio with some stills of the Light Table, and we were able to get it up on the screens. We checked for any color or size discrepancies, and they took it from there.

Kirill: What are you thoughts on the software tools that you’re using? Are you frustrated by them? Do you wish to see a radically different way to interact with them?

Joseph: You learn not to be frustrated by them. They are just tools and in the work that I do the concept is always the most important. When you get to art directing and having a more hands-off approach, then the software tools and its limitations do not become so much of a problem as you have technical teams that take your direction and help bring your designs to life.

In terms of interaction, I am open to new things. Years ago I never experienced working with a Wacom tablet and now I can’t work without it. Touch screens allowed us to interact with our fingers. And if something new becomes introduced that changes the way we interact with software, then I’ll be the first to try it.

Kirill: Where do you see the human-computer interaction heading in the near future?

Joseph: I sometimes wish that I’d be able to interact with holograms the way Tony Stark does in Iron Man. As a viewer, it just looks so cool, but I don’t know how functional that would be in real life. I can only guess, but I do think touch screens are going to be more and more relevant in the future, and so the devices that we have now, iPhones and iPads etc. which use natural gestural elements, are maybe preparing us for that.

Kirill: What happens the first time you watched the movies you’ve worked on?

Joseph: It can be quite distracting. Personally I have a hard time focusing on the story the first couple of times. I watched “Oblivion” three times. The first was an early cut on our first day of work, which didn’t have any VFX and graphics in it. The audio and sounds effects also weren’t complete so it really left a lot to the imagination. We were invited to the screening a few weeks before the premiere, and this time it was distracting because I was mainly paying attention to our work, trying to pinpoint anything that might have went wrong, even though there is no way that we could have made changes. It was however great just experiencing for the first time our graphics composited, colored, and implemented into the shots. Digital Domain and Pixomondo did a great job, obviously. The third time I watched it with a few friends, and that’s when I enjoyed it the most, being able to take in the story, the great audio and visuals.

Kirill: Where do you see yourself moving forward?

Joseph: It was a great experience working on several film projects as it’s completely different from motion graphics. I had the chance to work with small tight-knit teams that allowed me to have more creative freedom and input. Working directly with a film director like Joseph Kosinski allowed a close collaboration that sometimes is rare in a motion graphic setting as things get convoluted dealing with agencies and clients.

I hope to continue doing what I’m doing, having fun working and learning from great people, on meaningful projects that I care about. And to continue growing as a designer and story teller.

O Brasil tem uma dívida de gratidão com o governador Geraldo Alckmin. Se ele não tivesse soltado a tropa de choque em cima dos manifestantes que protestavam em São Paulo contra o aumento do preço das passagens, é possível que o maior movimento social do país jamais tivesse chegado às ruas. A onda de indignação começou a se formar assim que as primeiras fotos e vídeos das agressões da polícia circularam pela internet; ela se transformou em tsunami quando, horas depois, o governador veio a público defender a polícia e atacar os manifestantes. Como assim? Quer dizer que o cidadão, que paga a conta, ainda tem que aguentar todos os desaforos do governo caladinho, fechado em casa?! É isso?!

Para quem estava nas redes sociais, o que aconteceu a partir daí rolou como um filminho. Subitamente, todos os outros assuntos retrocederam, como fez a maré na Ásia, e as timelines foram tomadas pela insatisfação geral. No sábado, o Twitter e o Facebook mal aguentavam o peso da comoção. Algo de grande e de inesperado estava se formando. No dia seguinte, tentei definir o que estava sentindo:

” Estou maravilhada com o que está acontecendo no país. Há quem se queixe que a população não se manifestou em relação ao mensalão, à PEC 37, à roubalheira em geral e à da Copa em particular, e que o preço da passagem seria uma causa “menor”; mas a gente nunca sabe qual é a gota d’água, qual é o estopim que faz com que todo mundo tenha vontade de gritar junto. O que no começo era só um protesto contra 20 centavos virou o protesto que todos queríamos, contra todas as desfeitas que nos vêm sendo feitas de todos os lados, por todos os partidos, por todos os poderes.

É um protesto que, pelo menos à primeira vista, “pegou”.

Ao longo dos últimos anos, fui chamada para N manifestações diferentes, muitas das quais coincidiam com a minha opinião. Nenhuma, porém, tinha jeito de dar liga. Faltava sempre alguma coisa que não sei definir — e que talvez fosse até a polícia na rua, quem sabe? Faltava a empolgação geral, o arrepio na espinha, a massa crítica.

Agora é diferente.

Pela primeira vez em muitos anos — mais especificamente, desde o impeachment do Collor — dá para sentir uma tensão no ar, um alento, o brilho de uma esperança coletiva que não discrimina sexo, idade, classe social.

As manifestações da semana que vem podem não dar em nada. A ideia dos panos brancos nas janelas pode — sem trocadilho — passar em branco. É possível até que o momento de indignação geral já tenha passado quando a quinta-feira chegar e for a nossa vez de, aqui no Rio, ir às ruas (eu estava mal informada, não sabia que já tínhamos protesto marcado para a segunda-feira). Penso muito nisso, para não dar corda demais às minhas expectativas e não me amargurar se nada acontecer.

Mas também pode ser que estejamos diante de um grande momento. Que não será apenas um protesto contra o aumento das passagens, mas uma formidável manifestação de cidadania — algo de que nos orgulharemos no futuro, e que contaremos, cheios de saudades, aos nossos filhos e netos.”

Até agora, 2h12 de quarta-feira, não tenho motivo para amargura; ao contrário, estou feliz, orgulhosa do meu país e da minha cidade. Quem pede foco aos manifestantes ainda não entendeu que, antes de qualquer coisa, este é um movimento pela cidadania, um movimento que diz ao poder canalha que temos que ele não nos representa.

“O povo unido protesta sem partido”, gritava a moçada em Porto Alegre. Eles me representam.

A hashtag #ForaDilma disparou para o primeiro lugar nos TTs (trending topics) do Twitter na terça-feira à noite, logo após a burocrática e irrelevante declaração da presidente sobre as manifestações. Não tenho nenhuma simpatia por ela, muito antes pelo contrário, mas acho que definitivamente não é por aí — mesmo porque as alternativas para substituí-la, ao menos no momento, são Michel Temer e Renan Calheiros.

A meu ver, as manifestações não são contra A, B ou C, mas contra a classe política como um todo. Cansamos de ver o nosso dinheiro indo para o lixo, cansamos de ver Brasília transformada num balcão de negócios, cansamos da roubalheira e do deboche dos nossos governantes. Todos eles. De todos os partidos, de todos os poderes e de todas as esferas.

“O povo acordou, o povo decidiu, ou para a roubalheira ou paramos o Brasil”, entoavam os manifestantes em Juiz de Fora. Eles me representam.

Há pouco tempo, vi uma foto da Avenida Rio Branco muito parecida com a que vimos no dia da manifestação. Era a foto do desfile do Bola Preta no carnaval, lembram? A diferença é que naquela foto, segundo a polícia, havia um milhão de pessoas. Eu não sei como essas contas são feitas, mas eu gostaria muito que alguém me explicasse por que a avenida cheia no carnaval tem um milhão de pessoas, e a avenida cheia na manifestação tem cem mil. We've seen plenty of phones that support wireless charging, but it's still not a common feature on most phones. Over on Instructables, user Harari shows you how to add a wireless charging system to just about any cell phone that charges with a USB.

The hack uses an old Palm Touchstone charger, and a handful of cheap coils and wires. When you're done, you'll be able to simply rest your phone on the Touchstone and it should charge. It's similar to a hack we've seen before, but the end result is a bit cleaner and functional. As with any power-related hack, you'll want to proceed at your own risk, but if you have an old phone you want to try this out on it's certainly worth a shot. Back in May of this year, NEC unveils the “world’s first” liquid cooled smartphone. Forget about pumps and radiators, this is a smartphone we’re talking about after all; it uses heat pipe technology. The principle is really simple to understand. Fill a metal tube up with a liquid, usually a mix of water and ethanol. Attach one end of it to something hot, like a CPU, and the other end to something cool. In what might be seen as a harbinger of license changes to come for MySQL, the MariaDB blog is reporting that the man pages for MySQL 5.5.31 have changed licenses. Formerly covered by the GPLv2, the man pages are now under a more restrictive license, the crux of which seems to be: "You may create a printed copy of this documentation solely for your own personal use. Conversion to other formats is allowed as long as the actual content is not altered or edited in any way. You shall not publish or distribute this documentation in any form or on any media, except if you distribute the documentation in a manner similar to how Oracle disseminates it (that is, electronically for download on a Web site with the software) or on a CD-ROM or similar medium, provided however that the documentation is disseminated together with the software on the same medium. Any other use, such as any dissemination of printed copies or use of this documentation, in whole or in part, in another publication, requires the prior written consent from an authorized representative of Oracle."

Ser feminista é um trabalho de Sísifo. Você escreve, explica, tenta evoluir o debate, daqui a pouco tem que fazer TUDO DE NOVO. Do zero. Porque sempre vai aparecer algum indivíduo no tabuleiro da vida que vai fazer você voltar 20 casas e ficar uma rodada sem jogar para explicar coisas óbvias que você já explicou trocentas vezes antes. Cansa. Dá rugas.

Aí a pessoa não entende por que você não teve paciência com ela. Porque essa pessoa geralmente acredita que ela foi a primeira a cruzar o seu caminho com aquele argumento asno e aí fica pensando que ela é especial e merece a sua atenção. Coitada.

Como minha paciência esgotou há muito tempo, resolvi escrever as respostas para as questões que eu mais ouço nesse mundão véio sem porteira quando o assunto é feminismo. Para facilitar, né? Se alguém aparecer repetindo qualquer um desses argumentos, dou um ctrl+c ctrl+v para responder. Sinta-se à vontade para fazer o mesmo.

 

Oi. Essa comparação é tão sem pé nem cabeça quanto dizer “não sou nem flamenguista nem dentista”. Uma coisa é uma coisa, outra coisa é outra coisa e está na hora de aprender o que é cada uma delas.

Machismo é uma cultura de dominação que oprime especialmente as mulheres, que nega a elas humanidade, que as trata como inferiores e incapazes. Feminismo é um movimento de pessoas que lutam contra essa opressão e a favor de um mundo mais justo e igualitário para todas e todos.

Feminismo é sobre liberdade, sobre escolha, sobre respeito. Se você acha que mulheres devem ser tratadas como seres humanos e ter os mesmos direitos dos homens, parabéns, você é feminista. Juro, é só isso. Não tem letras miúdas.

A Clara Averbuck explicou isso muito melhor. Mais claro que isso, nem desenhando.

 

Inclusive os paraquedistas, os trapezistas, os ciclistas, os economistas (ah, os economistas!), os fisiculturistas, os autistas, os turistas, os massagistas, os baristas, os malabaristas… Todos esses “istas” são um perigo para a sociedade. Ah, não fode. (Acabou de ganhar um passaporte grátis de volta para o tópico 1 desta lista).

 

‘Xô te dizer o que é sexista: se incomodar com um nome só porque ele faz referência a algo feminino. Porque temos todo um idioma contaminado pelo machismo, com palavras depreciativas exclusivas para mulheres e com o masculino como norma, mas isso não parece incomodar muita gente, né? Aí você vem dizer que o nome de um movimento de MULHERES pelo fim da opressão contra MULHERES não deveria se chamar feminismo?

Essa implicância é só mais um reflexo do machismo: ficar incomodado quando mulheres ganham evidência, mesmo quando é em um pedacinho da palavra. Quer dizer, a gente já luta por espaço na política, no trabalho, na sociedade… e tem que lutar pelo nosso espaço até em uma palavra. Isso só mostra o quanto o feminismo é necessário – e faz todo sentido se chamar “feminismo”. Lide com isso.

Para finalizar, feminismo não se chama Humanismo pelo mesmo motivo que não se chama pão de queijo ou Hello Kitty: porque é OUTRA coisa. Humanismo é uma doutrina filosófica centrada no ser humano, em oposição ao sobrenatural, a deus e a metafísica. Então vamos deixar de ser tontos e parar de querer chamar bicicleta de pterodáctilo? Vamos.

 

Coisas como ganhar salários iguais, ter autonomia sobre o próprio corpo e não ser desumanizada em cada canto desse planeta realmente são privilégios. Mas sabe por que são privilégios? Porque só um gênero tem. Queremos os mesmos direitos que qualquer ser humano merece; se isso te parece “demais”, é porque quem tem privilégios demais é você.

 

Não lutamos pelo alistamento obrigatório porque é uma ideia imbecil. Por que alguém com algum bom senso lutaria para ser obrigado a fazer alguma coisa, meu deus? É muito mais sensato lutar pelo alistamento voluntário para AMBOS os gêneros e brigar para que as mulheres que queiram entrar na carreira militar consigam. É, porque é muito difícil para as mulheres terem uma carreira em uma instituição tão machista quanto as Forças Armadas. Se para você a questão militar é tão importante, você deveria comprar a briga dessas mulheres. Just saying.

 

Onde estão afinal essas feministas que tanto odeiam os homens? Hoje, no History Channel, logo após “Alienígenas do Passado”. O programa vai trazer depoimentos inéditos: “fui abduzido por uma feminista que odeia homens! Elas existem, juro!”, diz o cara que odeia feministas.

Um especialista descobriu como encontrá-las e conta para a gente: se você disser três vezes na frente do espelho “misandria, misandria, misandria”, uma feminista que odeia homens aparece para você.

O programa também entrevistou transeuntes. Feministas que odeiam homens: você acredita? “Olha, acho que não dá para provar que elas existem, mas também não dá para provar que não existem.” Imperdível.

 

Desconfio que Valerie Solanas é referência em feminismo somente para aqueles que odeiam o feminismo. Porque, sinceramente, o resto das feministas está cagando pra ela. Mas sabe o que é o mais engraçado disso tudo? Se incomodarem tanto com um manifesto odioso escrito por uma suposta feminista que nem está mais viva, que só é conhecida por anti-feministas, que nem é levada a sério pela maioria das feministas que atuam hoje em dia, enquanto não se importam nem um pouco com um “SCUM Manifesto” contra as mulheres que é recitado e colocado em prática todos os dias, em todos os cantos desse planeta e que tem matado mulheres de verdade. Sim, existe um “SCUM Manifesto” contra mulheres e ele se chama… mundo. Bem-vindo à realidade.

 

Porque você já viu os preços nos salões de beleza? Estão pela hora da morte! Brincadeira. Não é nada disso. Feminismo não é revista feminina que tem regrinhas sobre como devemos nos vestir, o que devemos fazer, o que não podemos fazer e outras 1001 “dicas” para agradar seu homem. Aliás, o feminismo quer justamente pegar todas essas regrinhas, picotar em mil pedacinhos, jogar no chão e sambar em cima. Depilar, fazer as unhas, alisar o cabelo, usar salto alto e essas coisas que definiram como “femininas”, nada disso deve ser feito por obrigação. Depila quem quer. Uma feminista não se define pela quantidade de pelos que tem no corpo. Se ainda tem dúvidas do que é feminismo, volte para o tópico 1.

 

Cê jura? Eu nunca iria imaginar que um sistema opressor tão profundamente arraigado na nossa sociedade pudesse ser internalizado e reproduzido justamente por suas vítimas. Falando sério: o fato de existirem mulheres endossando o machismo NÃO É licença para você ser machista. Você é obrigado a pisar em alguém só porque essa pessoa voluntariamente se deitou no chão? Aliás, o fato de existirem mulheres endossando o machismo só reforça a importância e a urgência do feminismo.

 

Feminismo não é um livro de regrinhas que impede você de fazer coisas legais. O nome disso é cristianismo, feminismo é OUTRA coisa. O feminismo quer quebrar todos esses padrões que aprisionam as mulheres, inclusive em relação ao próprio corpo. Mulheres que percebem que podem amar o próprio corpo, que podem ter muito prazer no sexo e não apenas fazer sexo para dar prazer ao homem, que se despem do moralismo e da vergonha que tentam colocar sobre o sexo, não só dão de quatro, como dão de cinco, de seis, de quadradinho de oito, gozam e fazem coisas inimagináveis para essa sua cabecinha formatada pelo pornô mainstream que nem é sexo de verdade. Ou seja: feministas fodem bem melhor.

 

Deve ser porque você só conhece as feministas da sua cabeça. Além disso, mulher nenhuma, sendo feminista ou não, tem obrigação de ser bonita. Não somos objetos decorativos, sabe? E já que tocou no assunto, você nem é lá essas coisas, querido.

 

Ninguém defende o aborto. O que se defende é que o aborto seja descriminalizado para salvar a vida de mulheres que fazem na ilegalidade e MORREM. Ser contra a descriminalização do aborto legal e seguro é condenar mulheres à morte, especialmente mulheres pobres e negras.

Trazer uma questão de saúde pública para o nível de ser “contra ou a favor” do aborto é ficar na parte rasa do debate. Aliás, não interessa se eu sou pessoalmente contra ou a favor do aborto. A minha opinião pessoal e minhas crenças não deveriam nortear as leis. Porque eu sou contra babacas, mas nem por isso o governo está criando leis para impedir as pessoas de serem. Inclusive, tem gente por aí sendo babaca sem vergonha nenhuma.

É contra o aborto? Nunca faria um? Ótimo, não faça. O corpo é seu e ninguém deve te forçar a fazer qualquer coisa que você não queira (aliás, o aborto ser descriminalizado não significa que se tornará obrigatório, ok?). O quê? Você é homem e por isso não pode engravidar nem precisaria abortar? Então por que RAIOS você acha que sua opinião sobre um corpo que não é o seu conta? Vai plantar batata e tira a sua opinião do meu útero. ‘Brigadinha.

Não sei se você sabe, mas o aborto JÁ É crime, exceto em casos de estupro, risco de vida para a mãe e fetos anencéfalos, e isso NÃO ESTÁ adiantando para reduzir o número de abortos. As mulheres não vão parar de abortar, mas se o aborto continuar ilegal, elas não vão parar de morrer.

Sei que dava para fazer um FAQ inteiro só sobre essa questão, mas é o que temos para hoje. A Feminsta Cansada (tão cansada quanto eu) e a Clara já escreveram bem melhor sobre isso, fiquem também com as palavras delas.

 

Para muita gente, querer se igualar aos homens no que eles têm de pior é… transar com quem bem entender. Mas aí vai uma novidade: mulher gosta de sexo tanto quanto homem. Queremos poder viver isso sem que nos julguem como vadias, da mesma forma que os homens não são julgados. Aliás, nem existem palavras o suficiente para condenar homens que fazem sexo. Acredito que uma sociedade é bem melhor quando homens e mulheres podem fazer sexo livremente. Desde que tenha consentimento, segurança e seja gostoso, qual é o problema?

Ao meu ver, o que os homens têm de pior é justamente um sistema opressor a favor deles. O que os homens têm de pior é saber que são amparados por esse sistema (que, felizmente, nem todos endossam) para poderem agredir mulheres, estuprar mulheres, intimidar mulheres e calar mulheres. Então não, não queremos nos igualar ao que os homens têm verdadeiramente de pior. Queremos explodir esse “pior”. Com uma bazuca.

 

Sim. O pau não cai, se é esse o seu medo (aliás, pau nem é requisito para ser homem, sabia?). Inclusive, homens feministas fodem bem melhor (faz uma visitinha no tópico 10). Mas a primeira lição que o homem feminista aprende é: ouça as mulheres e respeite o seu espaço. Achar que pode dizer às mulheres como elas devem atuar no feminismo é um tanto machista. Quer ser feminista? Ótimo. Em vez de ficar chorando para ter espaço entre as feministas, você pode usar os espaços masculinos que você já frequenta para combater o machismo e ensinar a mais homens sobre como o feminismo é foda.

 

Eu aprendi sobre o feminismo na internet. É grátis, é prático, é jovem. Para começar, você pode acompanhar os blogs da Lola, da Nádia, da Clara, da Feminista Cansada, das Blogueiras Feministas, das Blogueiras Negras, do Diogo e da Gizelli, que além de ter textos excelentes também fez uma lista com vários outros textos e blogs bacanas. I discovered John Green when a reader sent me the link to the awesome Crash Course World History series, which Green hosts and co-writes. The series tells the entire history of civilisation in over forty, very entertaining 10-minute videos. I was totally addicted to it and I highly recommend it. There have since been a Literature series and Green is currently updating a series on American History. For you science buffs, John’s brother Hank has done a biology, chemistry and ecology series. All the videos can be seen on the Crash Course YouTube channel.

Por incrível que possa parecer, não existe uma boa definição, simples, clara e curta que pode definir o que é ser um “gerente”. Gerente não é uma profissão. Você não pode “aprender” a ser um gerente numa escola ou curso. A única forma de aprender é tentando, errando, melhorando, continuamente e indefinidamente.

Uma das melhores definições que encontrei é de ninguém menos que o professor Henry Mintzberg, em seu recente livro “Managing”, publicado em 2009. Uma leitura madura e leve.

Recomendo a leitura desse livro. Se você é um gerente iniciante ou quer ser um gerente, talvez este livro lhe dê alguma visão do que vai enfrentar à frente. Se você já é um gerente, vai ficar surpreso pois muitos livros teóricos pintam cenários que você nunca viu na prática – fazendo-o se questionar se você está fazendo a coisa certa ou não – e este livro talvez defina melhor os problemas reais que você enfrenta.

Quero trazer alguns trechos da primeira metade do livro.

Gerenciamento Não é uma Profissão

Depois de anos procurando por Santos Graal, é hora de reconhecer que gerenciar não é nem ciência nem profissão; é uma prática, aprendida primariamente através de experiência, e enraizada em contexto.

Certamente não é uma Ciência. Ciência tem a ver com o desenvolvimento de conhecimento sistemático através de pesquisa. Isso nem de longe é o propósito de gerenciamento, que tem a ver com ajudar a conseguir realizar coisas em organizações. Gerenciamento não é nem mesmo uma ciência aplicada, porque isso ainda é ciência. Gerenciamento certamente aplica ciência: gerentes precisam usar todo o conhecimento que conseguir. E eles certamente usam análise, enraizada no método científico (que significa aqui mais prova científica do que descoberta científica).

Mas gerenciamento efetivo é mais dependente na arte e é especialmente enraizada em ofício. Arte produz o “insight” e “visão”, baseado em intuição (Peter Druker escreveu em 1954 que “os dias do gerente ‘intuitivo’ estão contados”. Meio século depois, ainda estamos contando.) E ofício tem a ver com aprendizado a partir de experiência – trabalhando nas coisas à medida que o gerente avança.

Portanto, vale repetir o que Mintzberg costuma dizer: é impossível formar gerentes na escola. Não é um “talvez”, é uma certeza. Na escola você pode aprender técnicas de contabilidade, de marketing, conhecimento técnico repetitível. Nada disso gera um gerente e muito menos um líder. Se uma escola, um curso de MBA diz “Formamos Líderes”, isso é mentira. Essas escolas formam técnicos; técnicos que vão trabalhar em atividades técnicas até crescerem para começar a acumular responsabilidades e, talvez, um dia conseguirem realmente gerenciar alguma coisa.

Gerenciamento é uma Prática

Coloque junto uma boa porção de ofício com o toque correto de arte junto com algum uso de ciência e você acaba com um trabalho que é, acima de tudo, uma prática. Não existe “uma melhor maneira” de gerenciar; tudo depende da situação.

Nem mesmo é uma Profissão. Já foi apontado que engenharia também não é uma ciência ou uma ciência aplicada tanto quanto uma prática em seu próprio direito. Mas engenharia aplica uma boa porção de ciência, codificada e certificada quanto à sua eficiência. E portanto ela pode ser chamada de profissão, que significa que ela pode ser ensinada antes da prática, fora de contexto. De certa maneira, uma ponte é uma ponte, ou pelo menos ferro é ferro, mesmo que seu uso tenha que ser adaptado para a situação do momento. O mesmo pode ser tido sobre a medicina. Mas não sobre gerenciamento:

Muitas capacidades médicas de diagnóstico, inferência e tratamento … assumem que uma doença pode ser decomposta em problemas separados que não diferem muito entre pacientes e podem ser tratados por remédios razoavelmente padrões … Em contraste, muito do trabalho gerencial envolve lidar com problemas que são muito interdependentes com outras partes da organização, são específicas a esta firma, mercado e indústria em particular e não facilmente reduzíveis para uma síndrome padrão geral que pode ser tratada por técnicas específicas.

Gerenciar é um trabalho de negociação, de trocas, de ceder, de conquistar. Não existe um procedimento, não existe uma metodologia, não existe um corpo de conhecimentos rígido que define esse papel. Não dá para saber “qual é o nível” de um gerente porque não existe um “padrão” de comparação. Existem bons gerentes e maus gerentes, apenas isso. Os “maus gerentes”, na realidade, sequer poderiam ser chamados de “gerentes” porque de fato não estão gerenciando.

Gerenciamento Real

Já foi dito que um expert é alguém que sabe mais e mais sobre menos e menos até que finalmente ele ou ela sabe tudo sobre nada. O problema do gerente é o oposto: saber menos e menos sobre mais e mais até finalmente ele ou ela saber nada sobre tudo.

Muitos acham que fazendo diversos cursos, pós-graduação, MBAs, etc vão necessariamente torná-lo um bom gerente. E não existe essa correlação. Sim, existem excelentes gerentes que tiveram uma boa formação, mas não foi a formação que o tornou um bom gerente. Não confundir, correlação com causalidade. No caso geral, essa pessoa simplesmente está postergando aquilo que realmente lhe daria chance de se tornar um bom gerente: a prática.

Gerentes que não fazem e lidam, e então não sabem o que está acontecendo, podem se tornar incapazes de surgir com decisões sensíveis e estratégias robustas.

Também existe a idéia de que gerentes não devem colocar a mão na massa. Claro, porque ou ele gerencia ou ele executa. O que não significa que o gerente deve ser ignorante quanto à área onde atua. Muito pelo contrário, um gerente que tem um excelente conhecimento técnico de sua área tem mais chances de conseguir entender o contexto.

Pensar é pesado – pensar demais pode cansar demais um gerente – enquanto agir é leve – agir demais pode fazer o gerente não conseguir parar.

Da mesma forma, liderança demais pode resultar em um trabalho sem contexto – sem mira, sem foco, sem ação – enquanto muito relacionamento pode produzir um trabalho desconectado de suas raízes internas – relações públicas em vez de conexões tangíveis. O gerente que somente comunica nunca termina nada, enquanto o gerente que somente “faz” termina fazendo tudo sozinho. E o gerente que somente controla riscos termina controlando uma casca vazia de homens e mulheres “sim”. Nós não precisamos de gerentes orientados-a-pessoas, orientados-a-informação ou orientados-a-ação; precisamos de gerentes que operam nesses três planos. Somente juntos todos esses papéis em todos os três planos fornecem o balanço que é essencial à prática de gerenciamento.

O que Mintzberg coloca, e que é óbvio, é que se você quiser ser um autor renomado de gerenciamento, escrevendo livros, dando palestras, deve focar em um e apenas um aspecto e exaltá-lo como a “peça que falta”. Porém, a realidade é que um gerente que foca apenas em um aspecto da prática de gerenciamento com certeza está fazendo a coisa errada. Um bom gerente sabe equilibrar os diferentes papéis em diferentes situações, mas usa todos sempre que precisa.

Enfim, como podem ver, o papel do Gerente é muito mais amplo do que parece. Apenas estudar procedimento não o torna um gerente, assim como estudar uma tabela de cores não o torna um pintor, ou saber ler uma partitura não o torna um compositor.

Arte, Ofício, Técnica e Prática. Esta é a definição de Gerenciamento. Um gerente que não entende isso sempre será um péssimo gerente.

Como adendo, cuidado, às vezes vemos – não somente gerentes – mas profissionais muito ativos, que parecem que fazem muita coisa porque falam com muitas pessoas, agem bastante, estão sempre acelerados. Porém este sempre parece ser o sintoma do “profissional-herói”. E na minha definição significa justamente o indivíduo que está fazendo seu trabalho da forma errada: parecendo que está fazendo muito mas na realidade está apenas sendo ineficiente e, pior, corrigindo os próprios erros que gera no caminho, parecendo que está resolvendo muita coisa mas, na realidade, está apenas correndo atrás do próprio rabo.

Ainda me lembro quem me ensinou que eu não poderia confiar em outras mulheres. Ele me disse, cochichando no ouvido, que mulher é tudo falsa. Que minhas amigas eram invejosas, interesseiras, que a qualquer momento iriam me trair.

Ele me ensinou que outras mulheres deveriam ser vistas sempre como uma ameaça. Que elas iriam roubar meu namorado. Que iriam chamar mais atenção do que eu. Então ele me deu um tapinha de aprovação quando eu chamei aquela garota de vagabunda. “Boa menina”, ele disse.

Ele me ensinou que todas as merdas que eu passava por ser mulher eram culpa dessas mulheres que não se dão valor. Que por culpa delas, as mulheres – inclusive eu, tão boa e comportada – seriam para sempre vistas como objetos sexuais.

Então algo aconteceu. E o patriarcado arrancou os cabelos de desespero quando eu percebi que eu não precisava sentir raiva de outras mulheres. Ele esperneou quando eu parei de tratar outras mulheres como minhas inimigas. Ele gritou de ódio e até babou, porque se eu parasse de brigar com as outras mulheres, ia poder lutar CONTRA ELE.

O patriarcado é um velho autoritário que não gosta de mulheres. Quer dizer, até gosta, porque o patriarcado faz questão de ser macho e extremamente hétero. Mas só gosta de mulher em posições que ele consegue dominar facilmente: cuidando da casa, dos filhos, em empregos mal remunerados, em papéis sexualizados e estereotipados na televisão, fora da política.

O patriarcado, como o bom exemplo de velho amargurado que é, só pensa em sabotar as mulheres, deixá-las sempre na pior. Sua existência gira em torno desse único e mesquinho propósito de vida. Fazer mulheres acreditarem que são todas inimigas é uma de suas táticas. Fazer elas se sentirem sempre insatisfeitas com seus corpos é outra. Mas ele tem outros mil e um truques na manga para garantir que mulheres continuem sendo desprezadas.

O patriarcado até se acha poderoso e inabalável, mas se uma mulher começa a questioná-lo, ele só falta mijar nas calças. Ele se treme todo. Por isso, ele precisa de pessoas que o defendam, porque nem isso ele é capaz de fazer sozinho. Se alguma mulher ousa levantar a voz para questioná-lo, logo aparece um de seus defensores para dizer que ela devia estar lavando a louça em vez de estar falando qualquer coisa.

Ele lambe os beiços. Tente tirar isso dele e você vai ver como o velhote fica furioso. Porque se o patriarcado não puder nos explorar, ele definha. Seca até os ossos.

O patriarcado é um velho que só tem uma coisa maior do que seu ódio às mulheres: medo de acabar. Mas ele vai. Ele já começou a acabar. E acaba um pouquinho mais toda vez que uma mulher percebe que suas “inimigas” não existem. Que é só uma cortina de fumaça.

É aí que o patriarcado começa a se quebrar, pedacinho por pedacinho: quando mandamos um recado para as nossas “inimigas” e não é ódio; mas um “estamos juntas”. Porque só juntas podemos combatê-lo. Só juntas sobreviveremos.

After months of acquisition speculation, it appears that mapping company Waze may actually be, really and truly, getting bought. And the lucky winner? One of the few companies on the planet that probably doesn't need Waze at all: Google.

Israeli business publication Globes is reporting that Google will acquire the Ra'anana-based Waze for $1.3 billion. Naturally, neither party in this reported deal is confirming the details, no doubt until their ghostwriters can get the corporate blogs ready to post.

Update: Tuesday morning, the acquisition was officially announced by Google.

If this deal does go through, it essentially knocks a major mapping-data resource off the board. Waze's social-oriented traffic app has generated a lot of map data, independent of vendors Google, TomTom, NAVTEQ and the crowd-sourced OpenStreetMap Project.

The fact that there have been so few collections of geographic data out there for commercial use has made Waze very attractive to anyone looking to build a mobile platform without relying on Google Maps. When Apple decided to discontinue using Google Maps data in its own Apple Map app for iOS, Waze and TomTom were used for map data.

It was likely this association that helped create rumors earlier this spring that Apple was courting. Apple CEO recently publicly denied ever having made a bid for Waze.

Facebook, on the other hand, was very much in the hunt for Waze, with rumors that the social media company was throwing around billion-dollar checks to pick Waze up. Facebook reportedly backed off when it learned that Waze, unlike other Facebook acquisitions, wanted to remain open and maintain its offices in Israel.

It is not clear what Waze's role within Google will be when all is said and done, though early reports indicate the company will remain independent. Likely, a scenario like Google's 2010 acquisition of travel vendor ITA Software will unfold. Today, ITA is still a separate entity, and its passenger and airline reservation systems software powers travel apps like Kayak and Hipmunk.

While Waze data would be superfluous to Google's mapping data, the social aspects of the Waze app, which enables users to report traffic conditions in real time, could be folded into Google's mapping system, which would increase the accuracy and robustness of Google's existing traffic-reporting systems.

However Google opts to use Waze, one thing is for sure: Waze and its data would now be out of reach for any company that needs mapping data without going through Google. This puts Apple and Facebook in a particular bind.

Which may have been the whole $1.3-billion point.

Porn has long been one of the leading content sectors of the Internet. Yet, it is getting shut out from the latest cutting-edge mobile device coming down the pike, Google Glass.

Google updated its developer policies for creating Google Glass apps (called Glassware) over the weekend to ban sexually explicit material, building an Apple-like walled garden for Google Glass.

From the content policies, Section D – 1 of Google’s Glass platform developer policies:

We don't allow Glassware content that contains nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material. Google has a zero-tolerance policy against child pornography. If we become aware of content with child pornography, we will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution.

This will come as a disappointment to any people that desired to see naked, copulating bodies hover in their line of vision all day long. Or developers looking to serve those people.

Porn's Leading Innovator Already Has An App For Glass

The news comes as leading adult mobile app maker MiKandi is ready to release a porn app on Glass called “Tits and Glass” (NSFW). It would allow users to browse adult content and vote on it. Also, since one of the prime features of Glass is the fact it is a camera attached to your face, MiKandi allowed for users to shoot their own videos with Glass and upload them to the site. 

MiKandi has its own adult app store for Android. Google bans adult content from the Google Play Android app store, but MiKandi apps can be side-loaded as third-party apps outside of Google's purview. It is likely that the MiKandi Google Glass app could also be side-loaded, but that would likely mean a user would have to root their Glass, which Google has explicitly said will void their warranty (while also showing them just how to do it). 

You have to give credit to MiKandi for realizing the potential of Google Glass as a porn distribution mechanism. The ability to watch porn as a small screen hovering above your eye really could bring a whole new kind of, err, interaction to the medium. Just as happened with smartphones, many industries are probing the capabilities of Glass, from content properties like the New York Times to social networks like Path to real estate platform Trulia. 

Porn Always Finds A Way

Google may be able to stop an app maker like MiKandi from creating porn apps for Glass, there is really nothing Google can do about the ability to record and upload people’s sexual adventures. With Glass, Google has given people cameras. It just so happens these cameras are attached to peoples’ faces. Google cannot regulate what people do with their own cameras or where they upload that content. 

There may not be much Google can do in the long run against porn on Glass. Porn has taken over many other mediums on the Internet, despite efforts to fight against it. Tumblr is notorious for porn and Instagram has its own shadowy porn subculture. Google can threaten porn developers with bans of their Glassware developer licenses or other such penalties. But, as we have seen through the history of the Internet, porn finds a way.

In a conversation at All Things D's D:11 conference this week, Motorola Mobility's head of advanced technology and projects group Regina Regan lamented the fact that for all of the technological advances that we have made over the decades, we are still relying on outmoded password-based authentication, the kind the guys in the lab coats were using back in the day.

And we're doing it a lot. Regan speculated that power users would have to authenticate themselves nearly a hundred times a day.

Regan presented two options for better ways to securely access information in the near future: tattoos and "authentication vitamins."

The electronic tattoo, which Regan demonstrated on stage at the conference, are biostamps made by the firm MC10, which can be used by healthcare professionals to monitor a patient's vital signs. In a medical context, these tattoos, which are thin and stretchable, could be implanted within the body to monitor conditions like irregular heartbeats or brain activity.

The technology, Regan explained, can also be used as an authentication tool, worn right on the user's skin.

Ink not your thing? Regan pulled out another conceptual idea: a small pill-like device that, when swallowed, would turn your whole body into a authentication device.

The device runs "like a reverse potato battery," Regan explained, pulling power from the acids in your stomach to generate an 18-bit authentication signal from the embedded chip inside. The pill has reportedly been approved already by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Motorola seems to be taking a shortcut to the coveted holy grail of pure biometric identification with these interim bio/tech hybridized tools. The more technology that an authentication system employs, however, the bigger the more chance it can be hacked.

That said, tattoos and pills are a pretty interesting place to move the authentication conversation.

An anonymous reader sends news of a study which found that "two out of five medical students have an unconscious bias against obese people." The study, published in the Journal of Academic Medicine (abstract) examined med students from many different cultural and geographical backgrounds. "The researchers used a computer program called the Weight Implicit Association Test (IAT) to measures students’ unconscious preferences for 'fat' or 'thin' individuals. Students also answered a survey assessing their conscious weight-related preferences. The authors determined if the students were aware of their bias by seeing if their IAT results matched their stated preferences. Overall, 39 percent of medical students had a moderate to strong unconscious anti-fat bias as compared to 17 percent who had a moderate to strong anti-thin bias. Less than 25 percent of students were aware of their biases. 'Because anti-fat stigma is so prevalent and a significant barrier to the treatment of obesity, teaching medical students to recognize and mitigate this bias is crucial to improving the care for the two-thirds of American adults who are now overweight or obese,' Miller said. 'Medical schools should address weight bias as part of a comprehensive obesity curriculum.'"

Sometimes, Windows downloads important updates and decides it's going to restart your computer whether you like it or not. Here's how to disable that behavior.

This has been part of Windows for a long time, and while Microsoft tried to fix it in Windows 8, the annoyance still remains. When you see that screen that says your computer's going to restart in 15 minutes, you just grit your teeth and accept it.

But, there's actually an easy way to fix this—and it works in Windows 7, too. You just need to make a small tweak to the registry:

1. Head to the Start menu or screen and type "regedit" (no quotes). Start the Registry Editor that pops up.
2. Navigate to:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

   On many computers, you won't see the "WindowsUpdate" key. To create it, right-click on the "Windows" key in the sidebar and go to New > Key. Name the key WindowsUpdate, then right-click on that key and create a new one called AU.
3. Click on the AU key and, in the right pane, right-click on the empty space and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. Name the new DWORD:

   NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers

   Double-click on the new DWORD and give it a value of 1.
5. Reboot your machine and from now on, Windows will not force you to reboot after installing updates. Of course, when you install updates, you should still reboot your computer—and that responsibility is now on you—but this makes sure Windows doesn't catch you by surprise.

Again, this registry key has been around for a long time, and should work in Windows 7 as well (but we thought it was worth revisiting for Windows 8). You can also perform the same task with the Group Policy Editor if you're on Windows 8 Pro. Hit the link below to see how.

O texto a seguir é uma tradução do excelente artigo Standards: excellence vs mediocrity, escrito por Jason Yip, consultor da Thoughtworks, que tive o prazer de conhecer pessoalmente ano passado.

Antes de iniciar o texto traduzido, uma pequena introdução: todos sabemos como muitos conceitos que temos como fundação no mundo ocidental podem ser radicalmente diferentes no mundo oriental. Um desses conceitos difíceis de transpor do mundo oriental para o ocidental é justamente o de “padrões”. No mundo ocidental “padrão” é um denominador comum, estático, rígido, difícil de mudar, o status quo. No mundo oriental, a idéia de “padrão” é “o melhor”. Se amanhã aparece outro “melhor”, este deve ser considerado o novo padrão. Não é algo inatingível, que admiramos de baixo para cima sabendo que dificilmente vamos alcançar, como um “recorde”.

Imagine um mundo onde o “recorde” é o “padrão”. Eu falei sobre isso em outro artigo chamado Padrões, Commodities e Inovação, recomendo ler. Agora sim, segue a tradução do artigo do Jason:

Alguns anos atrás, eu participei de um tour de estudos de Lean no Japão. Como esperado, fizemos uma visita à uma fábrica da Toyota. De forma não esperada, essa visita foi conduzida por um gerente da fábrica que também nos acompanhou no tour. Em um ponto, estávamos olhando para uma área de demonstração de treinamento de capacidades fundamentais – desenvolvendo capacidades básicas necessárias para ser um membro produtivo na linha de montagem. A maioria era sobre coordenação de mãos com olhos e capacidades motoras. Por exemplo, teve um exercício onde você pega uma corda finha e a conduz ao redor de pregos seguindo uma sequência conhecida na direção do relógio ou contra o relógio. Eu rascunhei um exemplo do que isso poderia parecer:

Eu fui capaz de fazer o exercício em 8 segundos. Então olhamos um vídeo mostrando o campeão da fábrica fazendo em 4 segundos. Então perguntamos ao gerente da fábrica qual era o padrão, esperando que a resposta seria algo entre 5 e 6 segundos. Sua resposta? 4 segundos, claro. Se alguém é capaz de fazer em 5 a 6 segundos, eles o treinariam para atingir 4 segundos, mas mais lento que isso, e eles provavelmente encontrariam outra coisa para o candidato fazer.

Nossa premissa básica era que “padrão” deveria ser alguma coisa fácil o suficiente que qualquer um poderia fazer. Às vezes esse “padrão” vem com a expectativa de treinamento mas muitas vezes acaba sendo sobre o menor denominador comum de forma a obter consistência. Obviamente, não podemos obter consistência se nossos padrões só podem ser atingidos por um subconjunto de pessoas. A consequência dessa forma de pensar é que “padrões” inevitavelmente empurram a organização em direção à mediocridade.

A premissa da Toyota é que o melhor deveria ser o padrão. Ainda existe a expectativa que as pessoas podem atingí-la (com treinamento) e uma expectativa de consistência mas é um padrão de excelência em vez de um menor denominador comum. Isso cria uma expectativa muito maior de performance e desafio. A consequência desse jeito de pensar é que “padrões” inevitavelmente empurram a organização em direção à excelência, especialmente à medida que as capacidades das pessoas continuam a se desenvolver com o tempo.

Em um dos casos, padrões são uma âncora; no outro caso, padrões são um motor.

E isso é diferente em nosso mundo de tecnologia da informação e desenvolvimento de software? Eu acho que não. Pense sobre o último padrão que você encontro (ex. padrões de código, padrões de design, etc.) Ele foi desenvolvido como uma âncora ou um motor? E como seria se todos os padrões fossem desenvolvidos para serem motores?
