Chris Evans visits Seattle Children's hospital as Captain America

by Rodger Sherman

The Patriots won the Super Bowl, but Chris Evans and Chris Pratt weren't going to deny kids in the Seattle Children's Hospital an awesome day.

Remember when Seahawks fan Chris Pratt and Patriots fan Chris Evans made a Super Bowl bet? If the Pats won, Pratt had to dress up as Star-Lord and visit a Boston children's hospital. If the Seahawks won, Evans had to do the same in Seattle as Captain America.

Of course, the Patriots won, and Pratt did go to a Boston hospital in costume. But how could the duo not make an amazing day for Seattle kids just because of the result of a sporting event? So Evans and Pratt went to Seattle Children's Saturday:

The kids were beyond excited to meet Captain America and Star-Lord. #TwitterBowl pic.twitter.com/SSkdJk3pwW

California Driving, on Such a Portland Day

by Anonymous

Ok California drivers, this one's for you. I know car rants are played out and everyone hates them. But I hate getting cut off in traffic by you. I hate that you zip around busses dangerously. I hate that you crowd cyclists out of lanes on purpose and then laugh about it. I hate that I can't get in a crosswalk without one of you (and it's ALWAYS CALIFORNIA PLATES) almost taking me the fuck out with your lack of regard or awareness of pedestrians. You are in a metal machine that will fucking flatten me. Have some patience, smoke your wood pipes and keep on over using the word hyphy, twiddle your newly waxed mustaches, keep your new sugar skull tattoos lotioned, but please, please stop driving like assholes.

Classic Mac Icons Archive Bought By MOMA

by timothy
mikejuk writes Susan Kare is the artist responsible for many of the classic Mac icons that are universally recognized. Now her impact as a pioneering and influential computer iconographer has been recognized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She designed all of her early icons on graph paper, with one square representing each pixel. Now this archive of sketches has been acquired by MoMA, jointly with San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, and has gone on show as part of a new exhibition, This is for Everyone: Design Experiments For The Common Good. So now you can think of the smiling Mac, the pointing finger and scissors as high art.

GET IT, STEPHEN.

North Florida is hosting the Atlantic Sun championship game, and they're doing it in front of a raucous crowd and student section. That student section is led by freshman band member Stephen Putnam, who has become a celebrity for his preposterous dance routines.

We're rooting for North Florida to make the NCAA Tournament solely for more Stephen Dancing. We need those gyrations. Those arm swings. That unfortunate shirt lift that lets us see stomach.

Go ahead, Stephen. Dump that bottle of water on yourself. You deserve it.

DDoS attack targets Femsplain on International Women's Day

by Dante D'Orazio

Feminist blog Femsplain was taken offline earlier today by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, according to the site's founder, Amber Gordon. She tells The Verge that the site was offline for roughly three hours before service returned intermittently late Sunday afternoon on the East Coast. The timing seems far from random: today is International Women's Day.

In a tweet, Gordon — best known online as @missambear — shared a screenshot showing the massive influx of traffic from the DDoS attack. Such attacks overwhelm the servers that host websites with a avalanche of requests.

"Unfortunately it happened on a day that's meant to celebrate women."

According to Gordon, these sorts of attacks are not rare. "We constantly have people attacking us and attempting to bring our website down. It’s unfortunate but the reality of our mission." She added in comments to The Verge that prior attacks are "never to this severity and I think it's because it's International Women's Day." Social media accounts taking credit for the attack used the hashtag #internationalwomensday, suggesting the harassment is tied to today's date.

The blog started up late last year as a place for women to discuss topics from online harassment to Gamegate. It has a group of female contributors who publish stories to the site. It also shares reader submissions. Gordon says that "our community is so vocal about supporting us that tons of people were sending messages out on social media to raise awareness that this was happening." She added, "unfortunately it happened on a day that's meant to celebrate women."

Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad

firehose

hyhomnb, PR&N

The predecessor to the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad was a line built by the Pacific Railway and Navigation Company between 1906 and 1911.[7] The line, whose reporting mark was "PR&N", was sometimes known as the "Punk, Rotten, and Nasty" because of the wet and muddy working conditions for crews building the railroad through the Coast Range.[7] The line became the Tillamook Branch Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1916.[7]

Juuuuuupes

This week's Sailor Moon Crystal was a little all over the place. Instead of focusing on a single story like the excellent character piece for Sailor Mercury , it tried to be two things at once, never quite hitting highs in either. But it did tell us this: Sailor Jupiter seriously needs to step up her flirt game.

Creator spotlight: Floyd E. Norman

Floyd Norman (born June 22, 1935) is an American animator, writer, and comic book artist. Over the course of his career, Norman has worked for a number of animation companies, among them Walt Disney Animation Studios, Hanna-Barbera Productions, Ruby-Spears, Film Roman and Pixar.

Norman had his start as an assistant to Katy Keene comic book artist Bill Woggon, who lived in the Santa Barbara, California area Norman grew up in. In 1956, Norman was employed as an inbetweener on Sleeping Beauty (released in 1959) at Walt Disney Productions, becoming the first African-American artist to remain at the studio on a long-term basis.

Following his work on Sleeping Beauty, Norman was drafted, and returned to the studio after his service in 1960 to work on One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) and The Sword in the Stone (1963). After Walt Disney saw some of the inter-office sketches Norman made to entertain his co-workers, he was reassigned to the story department, where he worked with Larry Clemons on the story for The Jungle Book.

After Walt Disney’s death in 1966, Floyd Norman left the Disney studio to co-found Vignette Films, Inc. with business partner animator/director Leo Sullivan. Vignette Films, Inc. produced six animated films and was one of the first companies to produce films on the subject of black history.

Norman and Sullivan worked together on various projects, including segments for Sesame Street and the original Hey, Hey, Hey, It’s Fat Albert television special conceived by Bill Cosby, which aired in 1969 on NBC.In 1972, a different Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids Saturday morning cartoon series was produced for CBS by Filmation Associates). In 1999, Norman and Sullivan created a multicultural internet site, afrokids.com, designed to present a variety of African-American images to children.

Norman was a recipient of the Winsor McCay Award for Recognition of lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation at the 2002 Annie Awards. Norman was named a Disney Legend in 2007.

In 2008, he appeared as Guest of Honor at Anthrocon 2008 and at Comic-Con International, where he was given an Inkpot Award. In 2013 Norman was honored with the “Sergio Award” from The Comic Art Professional Society (CAPS). (X)

decadentlullaby:

When women used to be depressed or were not “taking care of their men” properly their husbands could send them to the psych ward for attitude adjustments. This was part of conditioning them to always wear a smile. They believed that if a woman saw herself smiling that it would become natural practice and that she would be “cured”. This often went along with shock therapies.

This gives a whole new level of creepiness to when random men tell you to smile.
