Google Chrome Requires TSYNC Support Under Linux

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes Google's Chrome/Chromium web browser does not support slightly older versions of the Linux kernel anymore. Linux 3.17 is now the minimum requirement. According to a thread on the Debian mailing list, a kernel feature called TSYNC is what makes the difference. When a backported patch for the Debian 8 kernel was requested, there were hostile replies about not wanting to support "Google spyware."

Apple will make it easier for schools to use iPads by dropping Apple ID requirement

by Dante D'Orazio

Everyone with an iPhone or iPad has to put up with the mild annoyance of entering their password when downloading apps or content from iTunes. But for teachers and IT administrators at schools, the situation is far worse. Imagine having to generate and manage hundreds of unique Apple IDs for each and every iPad owned by a school. Or, in situations where an iPad is shared among several students, the login information would need to be shared as well. Trying to load new apps or content onto devices in either of these situations would be a major hassle.

That's why Apple is moving to modify the current Apple ID requirements for iPads used at schools. According to an email obtained by 9 to 5 Mac and MacRumors, Apple will allow administrators in education settings to download apps and content to iPads without assigning an Apple ID to each device. The schools will, however, retain an option to disable downloads from students.

In addition, students under 13 currently require parental permission to set up an Apple ID, even if it's a school iPad. In 2016, schools will be able to set up and manage IDs for younger students without going through the trouble of formally obtaining parental permission. According to Apple, these changes "will make it far easier to enroll, manage, and support a large deployment — and reduce many of the steps schools have to go through to get setup."

Check it out, parents-to-be!  This amazing androgynous pregnancy line is about to open, so you don’t have to compromise your look, your gender presentation, or your comfort.

butchbabyco is founded by two awesome people, Vanessa Newman and Michelle Janayea:

“The story of Butchbaby & Co. began with two best friends and a dream. I met my best friend freshman year of college. It was bromance at first sight, and after we hit it off on the first week, we knew we’d be friends forever. We dreamt of growing old together, getting married not too far apart from each other, and having children at the same time so that they too could repeat the cycle of friendship. The thing was, the both of us are butch. Whenever we envisioned our future together, the dream always stopped short at carrying children. We both knew we wanted to, but we could never imagine what we’d wear. And when we did imagine ourselves in pregnant butch attire, that’s exactly what it was— only a figment of our imaginations because these clothes didn’t exist. Then one day, it hit me: I could change that. I could create more androgynous maternity wear not just for me but for every masculine identified individual who dreams of carrying a child and looking handsome doing it. And that’s how Butchbaby & Co. was born. Out of a dream and out of a necessity for all child bearing parents-to-be to have a more comfortable alternative to the current maternity wear we are provided.

ESPN: The Case for Trading Drew Brees

by Aaron Schatz

fuck the saints

A couple weeks ago in a look at bold moves teams could make in the NFC South, I threw out a quick mention of the idea that the Saints might look to trade Drew Brees and become the NFL's first tanking experiment. Today's article for ESPN fleshes that idea out a bit more with a point-counterpoint of why the Saints should trade Brees to tank, and why tanking wouldn't work in the NFL.

eff-blog:Dororo is being crowdfunded for a stream release with...

eff-blog:

Dororo is being crowdfunded for a stream release with subtitles for the very first time! This is one of the classic series produced by Mushi Production which started anime as a whole beginning with Astro Boy in 1963. Dororo was released in 1969 as the last black and white anime and the first title from the World Masterpiece Theater staple.

Here are a few reasons why you should definitely pledge (all money is sent only if the goal is reached):

  • One of Osamu Tezuka’s best anime.
  • From an all-star crew of anime makers. (Gisaburô Sugii, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Osamu Dezaki, Noboru Ishiguro, Isao Tomita, etc.)
  • Based on one of Tezuka’s best manga which was adapted into a cult video game and popular movie.
  • It’ll have a chance at a DVD release later if popular enough.
  • Ensuring at least a few series are successful will keep Anime Sols afloat and all the classic shows they are giving a chance to.
  • For fans of classic anime, this would be the oldest TV anime ever to get a subtitled release.

Uber’s epic DB blunder is hardly an exception. GitHub is awash in passwords

by Dan Goodin

Recent revelations that Uber stored a sensitive database key on a publicly accessible GitHub page generated its share of amazement and outrage. Some Ars readers called for the immediate termination of the employees responsible or for the enactment of new legal penalties for similar blunders in the future.

Left out of the discussion was a point Ars first tried to drive home more than two years ago. To wit, GitHub and other public code repositories are awash with personal credentials posted by tens of thousands, or possibly even millions, of people, some of whom work for extremely sensitive organizations. A case in point are GitHub entries that appear to include everything needed to log into many Secure File Transfer Protocol accounts. One GitHub search revealed almost 269,000 entries like the one pictured above, showing the domain name or IP address, username, and password needed to log in to each account. Similar searches generated almost two million entries for WordPress accounts.

A quick scan of the results shows that many of them represent no security threat at all, since the password fields are blank or the credentials belong to non-existent accounts or accounts that are accessible only to users already connected to the local network. But a mind-numbingly large percentage of the results appear to provide credentials for accounts on production servers. Whether percentage is 33, 25, or even 10, it's way too high. It wouldn't be surprising if many of the credentials offered shell accounts that ran with highly privileged administrator rights. To protect the careless, this post won't reveal the specific search terms used, even though they are extremely easy for readers figure out on their own or to find on Twitter, in blog posts, or in other venues.

20 percent of Mars' surface was likely water 4.5 billion years ago

by Lizzie Plaugic

YOOOOOOOOOO ROSALIND

Mars once had enough water to cover its entire surface, a study published today in Science suggests. Around 4.5 billion years ago, Mars was host to a body of water that was larger than the Arctic Ocean. At around .085 miles deep, the water would have covered Mars' surface, but it's more likely the pool was slightly greater than one mile deep. In that case, it would have covered around 20 percent of the planet, The Washington Post reports.

Mars also probably had seasons

The new findings come from a team of researchers who collected data via three large telescopes on Earth: the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, and the Keck II telescope and NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii. The scientists measured the amount of water and the amount of HDO — water's heavier form — in Mars' atmosphere. The test was similar to measuring the separation of oil and water, one of the study's authors, Geronimo Villanueva, told The Washington Post. "If you're losing material — which the atmosphere of Mars has been doing since it was formed — you'll lose more of the light material first," he said.

By measuring the ratio of H2O to HDO against their atmospheric rates of escape over nearly six years, the researchers were able to determine the planet's water content billions of years in the past. The research also indicates that Mars once contained several regional atmospheres and a climate divided into seasons.

It's not news that water once existed on Mars. In 2013, grooves and slopes in the planet's surface hinted at recent water flow and last year, findings by NASA's Mars Curiosity rover suggested the planet's 96-mile-wide Gale Crater was once the location of a massive lake. But today's findings suggest that Mars' water supply was not fleeting. That Mars once hosted such a large body of water implies the planet may have been habitable for much longer than previously thought.

NASA plans to evaluate these findings from space with the launch of an orbiter in 2016.

Golf otter plots world domination, begins by chasing golfer

In the otter's defense, it doesn't look like it's chasing Lee ... but this is a still photo, so anything is possible.

Perhaps the otter is simple giving her golf tips and trying to help improve her putting?

Or maybe golf otter is growing bolder?

otter

Maybe the otter was just jealous of this ram's TV time.

Whatever the case, be on alert! Don't let their furry cuteness lull your defenses!

Yet another reminder that AD is really good.

While Zach Randolph wasn't exactly demonstrating any blazing breakaway speed, Anthony Davis still did a great job following the play and making the block.

He was probably inspired after watching Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns block everything Florida put up earlier in the day.
