Remember Jay-Z’s terrible Android app? Privacy group wants feds to investigate

by Cyrus Farivar

You may recall our outrage over Jay-Z’s and Samsung’s new Magna Carta Holy Grail app. It was poorly designed and requested way more digital access than it should have for an app designed simply to provide customers with a new album. As we reported earlier this month:

This app's very existence is vaguely bewildering. The number of permissions it asks for verges on parody. Its (previous) ability to spam up your social feeds is obnoxious. Its presentation is perfunctory at best. It does nothing to protect the songs from downloading and sharing—of course, this would have happened with Samsung's cooperation or not, but if the point was "exclusivity," then somebody missed a memo somewhere.

Even Jay-Z, whose real name is Sean Carter, said the fact the app requires access to so much private data was disappointing. As he wrote on Twitter: “sux must do better.” Now, a privacy advocacy group wants the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate.

“Samsung failed to disclose material information about the privacy practices of the App, collected data unnecessary to the functioning of the Magna Carta App, deprived users of meaningful choice regarding the collection of their data, interfered with device functionality, and failed to implement reasonable data minimization procedures,” the Electronic Privacy Information Center said in a complaint (PDF) filed on Friday, July 12, 2013 and announced on Sunday, July 14 2013.

TV: Great Job, Internet!: New York's PBS station made some amazing fake reality show trailers to go with its amazing fake posters

by Kayla Reed

PBS has every reason to hate reality television. The latter is trampling all over the former as far as ratings and revenue are concerned, despite the utter lack of brainpower necessary to consume it. Following the success of its subway poster campaign, New York’s PBS affiliate, WNET, has created three fake trailers for ridiculous reality shows to reiterate that it is one of the last institutions providing meaningful, educational content. Each trailer cuts off just a second before it should, and a message appears on screen: “The fact that you thought this was a real show says a lot about the state of TV. Support quality programming.” There’s also information on how to donate and the official hashtag, #TVGONEWRONG. It’s a strong statement about the state of cable these days, but will it make a difference? Watch the trailers below.

Scott Walker Signs Mandatory Ultrasound Bill Into Law—In Private:

Wisconsin governor Scott Walker stealthily signed a bill into law on Friday requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals in order to perform abortions, and women to first have an ultrasound to “bond” with the fetus. The law, which brings the number of abortion clinics in the state down to two, goes into effect on Monday.

Signed in a private ceremony and announced in a press release proclaiming, “This bill improves a woman’s ability to make an informed choice that will protect her physical and mental health now and in the future,” the new law was immediately met with a lawsuit and restraining order filed in federal court by Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Services, which is being represented by the ACLU.

Go fuck yourself, Scott Walker.

The California State Government Is Now In Possession of $10,000 Worth of Star Wars Merchandise

Eric Hodgson, a California citizen who was attempting to defraud $2 million from the California State Department of Transportation, has lightened his sentence by relinquishing a number of his possessions to the state.  Among these possessions is $10,000 worth of Star Wars merchandise, which, apparently, now belongs to the state of California.

Music: Great Job, Internet!: Watch a scene from Kanye West's HBO pilot that never aired

by Kayla Reed
firehose

Kanye West actually referred to himself as a black Larry David. ("That's the first thing he said to me.")

Before he morphed into Yeezus and impregnated a Kardashian, Kanye West was in talks with HBO for his own improv comedy show in 2008. It was to be similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry Charles, who was producing the pilot, told Coming Soon that West actually referred to himself as a black Larry David. ("That's the first thing he said to me.") The show was ultimately deemed “too hardcore” for HBO, because the network has never aired anything the whole family couldn’t watch.

But, like other pilots that never aired, this one has also made its way to the Internet. Alison Quinn, the actress in the scene below, uploaded it as part of her reel. The concept itself is funny—a kid from the Make A Wish Foundation finally gets to meet Kanye, who he thinks is “alright,” though his real favorites are Lil Wayne and R. Kelly ...

Plastic bottles funnel rain into rain barrels

by Mike Szczys
firehose

"green hacks"
yep, unsubscribed

plastic-bottle-downspout

This is [Wombling's] no-cost solution to getting rain from his gutters into a rain barrel. It is literally just a bunch of plastic water bottles chained together. At one end he uses the original cap with some holes punched in it as a sieve.

We like the concept, but find the execution a bit dubious. In heavy rain the holes in the cap will not be able to keep up and we figure your gutters are going to overflow. That may be okay depending on the grade of your landscaping, but those who value keeping their basement dry should avoid this route.

Just a bit of improvement could change all that though. We suggest making the rain barrel the sieve. Add a bowl shape to the lid with a large piece of screen in the bottom to filter out debris. Then form some type of spout on the front side of the lid to channel overflow away from the house.

The amount of waste generated by bottled water has always troubled us, which is part of the reason we featured this. We also liked seeing those plastic bottle skylights, and could swear we featured a floating plastic bottle island built in the ocean but couldn’t find the link. If you know what we’re talking about leave the goods in the comments section.

Monaco dev 'very disappointed' with XBLA sales performance

by Danny Cowan
firehose

it's a damn shame, as it's a great revival of couch-based offline multiplayer, the sort of games that usually work way better on 360 than PC.

Monaco dev 'very disappointed' with XBLA sales performance
Responding to fan questions on Reddit, Monaco: What's Yours is Mine developer Andy Schatz claims that his studio's efforts in porting its co-op stealth game to the Xbox 360 were "largely wasted," due to unexpectedly low sales.

Schatz theorizes that many factors contributed to Monaco's poor sales performance on Xbox Live Arcade, including a weak demo and a last-minute delay that prevented a simultaneous release on PC platforms. Schatz revealed that a widespread bug related to online play proved especially troublesome, due to his team's inability to reproduce the issue on developer hardware.

"I was never depending on the Xbox being our primary revenue generator, but I was very disappointed in Xbox sales nonetheless," Schatz said. "We put a ton of effort porting the game, and to have that effort be largely wasted was really disappointing."

The PC version of Monaco is currently taking part in Steam's Summer Sale, and will be featured in an upcoming community vote.

Innovative Packaging: WikiBar by Mathieu Lehanneur

by Samantha Fox

Opening next summer in Paris, this new eco-aware café will serve food and products in edible packaging.

WikiBar, designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, endeavors to tackle global water and waste issues that are, in part, caused by excess packaging.

The WikiBar and WikiFoods concept was initially developed by Harvard professor David Edwards, designer François Azambourg and biologist Don Ingber, as a way to design and create foods that could remain fresh without protective plastic.

Merging science with innovative technology and design, food products in the range include non-melting ice cream and cheeses that require no protective film. In addition, a range of yoghurts can be eaten without a spoon, while biodegradable bags enable products to be taken home by customers.

The café’s interior design also looks to science and the molecular formation and structure of food, and features geometric patterns and shapes dotted throughout the space that reflect and emit light. Explore our S/S 14 Megatrend Rational for more on this design aesthetic. You can also read our recent Futurist report Future Flavors & Fragrances, in which we uncover the latest innovations in food packaging. – Samantha Fox

HBO solicita remoção do VLC Media Player dos resultados de busca do Google

by j. noronha
firehose

via Tadeu

"In an attempt to remove pirated copies of Game of Thrones from the Internet, HBO sent a DMCA takedown to Google, listing a copy of the popular media player VLC as a copyright infringement."

Direct link: http://torrentfreak.com/hbo-asks-google-to-take-down-infringing-vlc-media-player-130715/

Pirate VLC

A culpa é do sistema automatizado.

PARIS: Behind the Seams

by Sarah Hecht

The Musée des Arts Décoratifs will unveil an ‘underworld’ exhibition on July 5th that explores the history of both the female and the male silhouette – and its undergarment counterpart – dating as far back as the 14th century. This retrospective presents intimates of various shapes, sizes, materials, and functions according to the changing fashions and the ideal beauty of the time. Showcased here are techniques that span the pannier and the bustle through to the corset and the stomach belt, while materials range whalebones, hoops, and padding. Such rather “mechanical garments” were used as a means for women and men to draw their silhouettes. La Mécanique des Dessous reinterprets the seductive intimates market of today through the illusory garments of the past. –Sarah Ryan Hecht

Newswire: Weekend Box Office: Adam Sandler and friends un-cancel the apocalypse

by A.A. Dowd
firehose

' Actually, the real winner of the weekend was neither a live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion nor Sandler getting pissed on by a deer. Audiences instead went back for more Minion action, forking over an additional $44.8 million to make Despicable Me 2 the number one movie in America two weekends in a row. That puts the sequel on pace to not only outgross Pixar's vastly superior Monsters University, but just about every other movie released so far this summer that doesn't tie directly into The Avengers. To reiterate: Start digging those bomb shelters.'

Maybe Idris Elba bellowed too soon: Only in a world teetering on the edge of total, fiery annihilation could Adam Sandler dicking around with his comedian friends make more money than monsters fighting robots that are controlled by mind-melding soldiers and led by Stringer Bell from The Wire. Despite its mostly awesome configuration of geek-friendly elements, Pacific Rim had to settle for third place this weekend, bringing in a Manila-sized sum of $38.3 million. (Put in perspective, that's only a hair more than the last Transformers made in its first full day of release.) Confirming that the apocalypse remains firmly un-canceled, audiences said "Hey, why not? I like that sitcom with David Spade" to Grown Ups 2, handing over $42.5 million to the worst-reviewed movie of the summer. Did ticket buyers forget what it was like to sit through the first Grown Ups? Have giant, city-destroying ...

Who needs a HUD? Metro: Last Light and the return to realism

by Ars Staff
Keep an eye on that meter on your wrist... it's pretty important.

The world of Metro: Last Light isn’t pretty. To escape nuclear war, millions of the game’s Russian citizens descended into subway stations the instant the air raid sirens cried out, forced to leave their lives on the surface behind. Below ground, life is bleak. The irradiated world above means no access to fresh air or sunshine. Money means nothing, and ammunition is currency. Fathers nearly break down when sons ask where Mom is and when she’s coming home—and they have to repeat a variation of the same lie they’ve told for countless years. Radioactive mutants attack the subterranean train-station-based encampments.

The setting is easy to buy into because few blinking indicators and status updates slap you in the face, offering constant reminds that you’re playing a video game. This is deliberate, according to Andrey Prokhorov, creative director and co-founder at 4A Games, the studio behind Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light.

“If you look at your monitor (or TV set) as a gate into the world of the game, the heads-up display (HUD) elements become the bars keeping you from entering that world,” he told Ars in a recent interview. And it's part of a trend.
