That Mahler, he knew how to write a quiet, reflective passage, eh? This less-than-tranquil snapshot from the sixth symphony suggests that if the brass section have to put their fingers in their ears then it's probably only measureable on the Richter scale.

Minecraft mod incorporates quantum physics into gameplay
A new Minecraft modpack called qCraft allows users to dabble in quantum physics using the game's world, according to a post from Google Quantum AI Lab Team.
The pack, which you can see in action in the video above, adds new blocks with quantum entanglement, superposition and observer dependency characteristics. The idea sparked from Quantum AI Lab's desire to get smart, creative kids into quantum physics. The Team's goal is to "explore the potential" of quantum computing and seek out future scientists — in this case, the kids spending their time building, experimenting and discovering in Minecraft.
"Of course, qCraft isn't a perfect scientific simulation, but it's a fun way for players to experience a few parts of quantum mechanics outside of thought experiments or dense textbook examples," the post reads. "We don't even know the full potential of what you can make with qCraft, but we're excited to see what Minecraft's players can discover."
qCraft is available as part of the FTB Unleashed, Tekkit and Hexxit packs. It's also available as a direct install for Windows PC and Mac.

A tree grows inside this cylindrical transparent house

The inhabitants of this architectural concept by Masov Aibek might have to sacrifice a great deal of privacy in this towering windowed house, but they'd get to commune with both the nature outside and the tree growing through the middle of their home.
Is The South Bringing The United States Down?
firehose'The South – at long last – is industrializing. It’s going to continue to be a painful and noisy transition for awhile yet, and that’s hard for the rest of the country to understand since a lot of the fundamental changes happened decades ago elsewhere. The “Old South” is holding on and screaming, but the “New South” is a big part of America’s future.'

Spiders force Toyota to recall 800,000 vehicles
firehoseNOPE
NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOPE NOPE NOPPPE NOOOOOPE NOPE NOPE
Toyota has announced a voluntary recall of some 803,000 cars due to airbags inadvertently deploying — and the blame appears to be spiders inside the air conditioning units. Toyota's recall notice states that some 2012 and 2013 Camry, Venza, and Avalon vehicles are experiencing problems with their air conditioning condenser unit housing — apparently, condensation and water has been leaking into the airbag control module. In most cases, that's just causing the airbag warning light to turn on, but a few times the driver side airbag has deployed without warning.
However, according to CNN, the cause of the leak is rather unsettling if you suffer from arachnophobia. Spiders and their webs are apparently responsible for clogging the air conditioner drainage tubes, causing the water spillover onto the airbag control module. Fortunately for the hundreds of thousands of car owners potentially affected by the recall, this has only happened to a small number of cars — three airbag deployments and 35 warning light activations have been documented, according to Toyota. In all cases, spiders were a common factor — but given the very limited number of issues Toyota has seen, this feels like a "better safe than sorry" recall. In fact, Toyota notes that it's voluntary, and the fix sounds pretty simple. The company will apply a sealant and install a cover to eliminate the dripping.

Stainless steel steam juicer: turns fruit into juice for jarring
firehosefuck your steam juicer
freeze yo shit

This is a lifetime piece of kitchen equipment, made in Finland of quality stainless steel. With almost no mess or work, it turns quantities of fresh fruit into clear, sterile, hot juice which you can then pipe directly into Mason jars, where it will self seal with no further processing.
Picture a multi-layer double-boiler sort of arrangement, the size of a big soup pot. All stacked up, it’s 16″ high, and about 12″ across. The lowest pan gets water in it, to boil for the steam. The topmost pan is a 10.5 quart colander basket, where you put the fruit; this has a lid. The middle pan looks like an angel-food-cake pan, with a conical hole in the center. This is where the juice collects.
In a brilliant move, they attached a hose to the lower part of the juice-collector pan. This has a spring clamp to close it off, which clamp also serves as a hook, to park it on one of the side handles when not in use.
This juicer is especially useful when you have a sudden supply of fruit, and don’t want to spend days making jelly or heating up your kitchen. Once the juice is canned, it will keep for years, and can be made into jelly at any future time. The fruit needs hardly any prepping: whole cherries, grapes, blackberries, quartered apples or nectarines. I’ve stacked fresh rhubarb in vertically, yielding something akin to lemon juice. When you’ve simmered the water for an hour or two, you end up with about five quarts of juice and, in the top basket, some pulpy mush for compost (or you can stop after about 2 quarts, like I did with nectarines, and have mush still useable in a cobbler). The tastiest juice I ever made was when I got a case of Bing cherry “seconds”: a tiny jar of the juice was like nectar to drink straight.
The 48-page booklet that comes with it tells how you can use it to cook meat, vegetables and anything else you might want to steam. I once easily made steamed broccoli for 40 people.
The Lehman’s catalogue sells this one for about $200, and a somewhat smaller Chinese version for $80. I got my Finnish one on Craigslist second hand. Amazon has it, too. -- Lynn Nadeau
