Mario Kart 8's Women of Racing ⊟

I can’t keep up with all the Luigi GIFs/videos bombarding the internet and Fox News, so here’s a cute doodle from Gigi D.G. (Cucumber Quest) instead. It pairs well with these pics Social Justice Wario posted for Mario Kart’s “Women of Racing Organization” billboards.

I like this. My wife isn’t into Mario Kart at all, but she’s into racing and fixing cars, and I’m sure she’d get a kick of this. Also, Birdetta should be in the game instead of Waluigi.

by Unknown Lamer

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An anonymous reader writes "Netflix yesterday furthered its plans to ditch Silverlight for HTML5 on Macs, having already done so last year in IE11 on Windows 8.1. HTML5 video is now supported by Netflix in Safari on OS X Yosemite, meaning you can stream your favorite movies and TV shows without having to install any plugins." Make Your Own Dune Pain Box

Want to put someone through "gom jabbar," like the Bene Gesserit did in the Dune series? First you'll need a needle filled with "meta cyanide." That, I can't help you with. Then you need a box that can cause burning pain without harm. It's all possible if you use the "Thermal Grill Illusion."

Though popular for porn, Mobile Safari drops below half of mobile Web traffic

by Peter Bright
firehose

mobile Chrome appears to be done destroying Opera (which is rebounding???) and is now eating into Safari

As the now unsupported (unless you know the right workaround) Windows XP slowly declines, this month packed one surprise: mobile Safari lost its majority share of the mobile Web. Though the browser still holds a plurality of the usage share, it dropped below 50 percent this month.

In the desktop world, Internet Explorer was up 0.29 points, Firefox fell 0.19 points, and Chrome was also down by the same margin. Safari and Opera were up imperceptibly, gaining 0.06 and 0.02 points, respectively. Firefox's Chrome-like new interface appears to be doing little to attract users. The new interface was a risky move, as the change had the potential to alienate long-standing Firefox fans. Without seeing a win in terms of market share, one may wonder if the development effort was really worth it.

Mobile Safari was down a remarkable 3.05 points in May. Though the mobile market shows a lot more volatility than the desktop one, this is nonetheless a big swing, and it takes Apple's browser below 50 percent for the first time since the iPhone's explosive launch. In the long run, this was inevitable. Android is substantially outselling iOS, and even though Safari appears to be the mobile porn-browsing solution of choice, its time as the top mobile browser cannot last forever. It's still the most popular single browser, but the Android pair—Android Browser, down 0.69 points, and Chrome, up 1.39 points—will overtake it eventually. Opera Mini was also up, gaining two whole points. Internet Explorer and BlackBerry both fell marginally, losing 0.15 and 0.04 points respectively.

this fucking sport

None of the players passing along their wisdom seemed to realize that it was all completely arbitrary. No one came close to acknowledging, "You know, it's stupid and none of us know where it came from, and before we go fracturing some poor rookie's wrist because he looked too happy about going yard on a vet, we should really sit down and ask ourselves if the punishment fits the crime."

The Night That Elliot Rodger Put A Bullet Through My Leg

firehose

'I watched Elliot Rodger’s YouTube video a couple hours later. That was the moment when I realized someone tried to kill me. He pulled over his car and pointed at me and shot. I thought I was caught in the crossfire. And it turns out he saw me, pulled over, and shot at me. That that guy tried to fucking kill me.

There’s no way that any change in legislation would hurt. It can only help. It’s better than nothing. It’s better than just sitting here and thinking “well let’s just prepare ourselves for when it happens again.” We should never have to live like this ever. We should never have to think “let’s prepare ourselves for the next one.” No, let’s prevent the next one from ever happening again. That’s how it should be.

Yeah, it’s still gonna happen. This world is an ugly place sometimes.

I hate when people just say “It’s not gonna stop it.” I know I’m not gonna stop it! I’m not gonna snap my fingers and make everything perfect and one law is not gonna make everything perfect. But at least try. Try something. It’s not gonna hurt.'

Megan Carloto, a 22-year-old UCSB graduate, was one of the victims shot by suicide-killer Elliot Rodger. After her release from the hospital, Megan shared some of her recollections and thoughts with ANIMAL.

Insane video editor cut Star Wars into 11,684 single-word clips…then alphabetized them

by Abraham
firehose

#butts start at 4:50

For some unknown reason, Geek extraordinaire Tom Murphy, took all the lines from Star Wars that are spoken in English and divided the footage into a clip per word. He then took the 11,684 resulting bits and alphabetized them.

Here’s the dialog from Star Wars — or “ARST ARSW,” as Murphy fittingly titled it — in alphabetical order from the 201 instances of the word A to the single use of the word Zone

(via Reddit)

Some fun facts for those who aren’t watching and counting along with the whole thing…

  • The word lightsaber only appears once.
  • The most common word is the, of course, said 368 times.
  • The word with most screen time is you, at 52.56 seconds.
  • The 11,684 total words are comprised of 1695 unique words.
  • There is a 4-way tie for the longest word in Star Wars between responsibility, malfunctioning, worshipfulness, and identification, all 14 letters.

And finally, the most important question… Which edition did he use for this important project?

This is the Special Edition to troll Han-shot-first purists. Everyone knows the original is the most legit.

Data problems could jeopardize 2 million Obamacare signups

by Adrianne Jeffries

greeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Data discrepancies in healthcare signups could affect coverage for 2.1 million people, the Associated Press is reporting, relying on an internal government presentation. That means one in four Americans who signed up for Obamacare may find their coverage isn't quite what they thought it was.

The data problems involve income reporting as well as citizenship and immigration status, the AP says, and may mean that some people were wrongly granted subsidies.

The Health and Human Services Department denied to Buzzfeed that the data problems will "jeopardize" coverage. A department spokesperson told the AP that the "vast majority" of cases will work out in consumers' favor.

Healthcare.gov, the federal website where people could shop for health insurance, and its state counterparts have been plagued by technical issues. It's unclear whether the technical glitches contributed to the data integrity issues.

Newswire: Josh Trank will direct one of those standalone Star Wars movies

by Sean O'Neal

Trank has only one completed Hollywood feature film to his name (Chronicle)

Adding to a week already dominated by casting updates and space pigs from the set of Star Wars: Episode VII, Lucasfilm has reminded everyone that there’s still so much more to be preemptively overanalyzed by naming Josh Trank to direct one of its previously slated standalone Star Wars films. Trank joins Gareth Edwards as another filmmaker to make the jump from breakthrough indie fare like Chronicle and Monsters to big-budget versions of those, Fantastic Four and Godzilla, and now to the hyperspace of one of the biggest film franchises ever. As with Edwards, what character Trank will be tackling for his non-episodic Star Wars movie isn’t yet known, though rumors have persisted that Boba Fett and Han Solo are first on the docket. And hey, if Trank does end up making that “young Han Solo” movie, it goes without saying that his muse Michael B. Jordan would make ...

Japanese school girls practicing naginata (薙刀). Naginata is a pole weapon traditionally used by members of the samurai class. It consists of a wooden shaft with a curved blade on the end. In the modern martial art form of naginata, it is carved from one piece of Japanese white oak or it features a replaceable blade constructed from bamboo. Practitioners wear protective armor called bogu (防具). It is very similar to the armor worn by practitioners of kendo. In modern Japan, naginatajutsu is practiced especially by women.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and tag tamorapierce here because this is just too cool for words.

And that limb held, `cos here I am, with thanks!

Look at them, at the easy grace with which they wait, at their focus on the weapon and beyond it, the opponent.

okay yay this means i can add on to this
the reason the naginata is used primarily by women is because wives of samurai (who were part of the bushi/warrior class in japan, and everyone in the bushi no class no matter what was a warrior. and yes, women could be samurai too) would often be the ones to defend the house. which means they got trained in their own arts, a lot of them a lot more direct, efficient, and brutal than what samurai were trained in. because when your house/kids/livelihood are threatened, you want shit that works right now. that’s the most important thing you have is your house and family and in no way are you gonna let some punks threaten you like that. so it became very rapidly associated with women, which is a high honor for this, because it’s a scary, efficient weapon, with its long handle giving superior leverage that overcomes most swords with ease.
as someone training in the samurai arts, and who has fought against naginata a few times, these things are fucking effective and scary, and can easily take me out in less than a few seconds. i’ve fought against eishin-ryu, katori-ryu, and tendo-ryu style naginata techniques and they all kick my ass, with tendo-ryu ranking up there as one of the most deadly arts i’ve ever practiced against. the head of tendo-ryu lives near me, actually, and she’s a little old lady who takes absolutely no shit whatsoever and is confused as to why more women in the US don’t do naginatajutsu.
absolutely fear samurai women always. this is no joke. these women are the realest deal you can find.

Thank you! I sit here in delighted fascination. :3

I have one of these. (It was a super thing when my sensei told me years back that the best thing about finally having a female student was that now there was someone he felt happy to teach the naginata styles to.) It’s a lovely weapon… and incredibly effective. When properly used, no one armed with a mere sword can get anywhere near you. Also very effective against mounted opponents…

Why The Bechdel Test Is More Important Than You Realize

by Charlie Jane Anders
firehose

'the Bechdel Test is just the start of a conversation about how marginal women still are (in front of the camera and behind). And that, in turn, is part of an even larger conversation about how to have genre movies that 1) represent the human race more fully and 2) are less boring. And given how many men are getting to direct huge movies based on experience as production designers (Robert Stromberg), cinematographers (Wally Pfister) and writers (Roberto Orci) — none of which really guarantee that you'll be an accomplished director — it would be nice to see Hollywood also giving directing opportunities to women who've come at it via unconventional paths.'

Why The Bechdel Test Is More Important Than You Realize

We all talk about the Bechdel Test all the time, because it's so simple: Does a story have two women who talk to each other, about something other than a man? But almost every time it comes up, we all dismiss it, because it's too simple or too arbitrary. But actually, the Bechdel Test is more important than anyone realizes.
