Straight Outta Compton is an upcoming biopic directed by filmmaker F. Gary Gray (Friday) that charts the rise of fall of the legendary Southern California rap group N.W.A., which kickstarted the careers of hip-hop superstars Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. The film, which is scheduled to release on August 15, 2015, features a trailer introduced by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre.

Today Deadline reports that BattleBots, the competitive robot combat television show that aired on Comedy Central for five seasons, is returning, this time on ABC. The relaunched show will feature the same single elimination tournament format found in the original series, though weight classes will be abolished. Six episodes are scheduled to air this summer on ABC.

Beat Blox is a clever system for creating simple beats developed by Swedish designer Per Holmquist that utilizes small wooden blocks placed on a turntable. The faux record player’s arm uses a proximity sensor to detect when a block passes beneath it, creating one of a number of synthesized sounds. Holmquist’s current system utilizes three turntables programmed to play bongo, bass, and snare drum sounds, respectively, all turning at the same speed, so the beats are always in sync.

To add a bit of fun to popcorn making, designer Jolene Carlier has created Popcorn Monsoon, a popcorn maker that shoots the finished product out of a curved pipe and–mostly–into a waiting bowl. Popcorn Monsoon was Carlier’s graduation project at Design Academy Eindhoven back in 2014.

Brazilian clothing store Camisaria Colombo found a clever (if decidedly creepy) method for advertising menswear to busy executives who never leave the office. The company dressed up headless mannequins for Black Friday, added a price tag and flew them past high-rise windows on quadcopters. The effect is unsettling, particularly from afar.
Former Iceland basketball player and strongman competitor Hafthor “Thor” Bjornsson – known for playing the part of Gregor Clegane (a.k.a. “The Mountain”) on Game of Thrones – recently just won the World’s Strongest Viking Contest and broke a 1,000-year-old weightlifting record by carrying a 1433 pound log on his back and walking five steps. According to IronMind, “The legend of the Icelander Orm Storulfsson says that he walked three steps with this MONSTER WOODEN LOG which weighed over 650kg (1,433 lb.) and was 10 m (33 feet) long!”
We previously wrote about Bjornsson deadlifting an amazing 994 pounds during a strength competition.
“Hafthor Julius Bjornsson made history today in the World’s Strongest Viking competition,” Ilkka Kinnnen reported to IronMind, “breaking a record that has been part of history for 1000 years.”??
“The record has been described in Icelandic Saga book,” said Kinnunen. “The legend of the Icelander Orm Storulfsson says that he walked three steps with this MONSTER WOODEN LOG which weighed over 650kg and was 10 m long! It took 50 mere mortals to help him placing it on his back! After he took his third step, his back broke under the enormous pressure and he was never the same after that!
“Thor carried the 650kg and 10m log for 5 steps. The result was unbelievable and puts Hafthor Julius Bjornsson’s name in Viking history books,” said Kinnunen.

In the otherworldly short film “Ocean Gravity”, a diver tumbles above the sea floor like an untethered astronaut, creating an effect more astronautical than nautical. The film was co-directed by underwater filmmakers and expert free divers Guillaume Néry and Julie Gautier, who together make up the film studio Les films engloutis–they also have a daughter together. Gautier shot the film in the waters of the Tiputa Pass in French Polynesia, where strong currents helped propel Néry above the sea floor as the mysterious tumbling diver. The film’s score is by The Glitch Mob.

A determined white-and-orange cat named Rudiger does his best to dig himself and his human James out of the four-foot snow drift that reached the front door and left them unable to go outside. He eventually managed to break through and enjoyed a bit of sunlight before shaking the snow off of his back foot.
When Ann Bosche found that she couldn’t keep the tabby with a white-tipped tail whom she nursed back to health, she resigned herself to the fact that he would be safest at the local shelter, where he could find a new home. A few weeks later, however, Ann was surprised to learn that Fancy broke out of the shelter only 20 minutes after she left and had been making his way back to her and her husband ever since.
I looked at the clock and wondered who was at my house at 5:30 am. …I got up to see and what I found was nothing short of a miracle. I saw a cat, sitting at my husband’s feet, talking to him. I kept trying to focus on the cat and when he flipped his tail around, I saw proof. There was the white tip. I started crying and quietly said ‘Oh my baby, Hi Fancy.’ He turned, saw me and ran to me, talking and squealing the whole way. I truly think he was saying ‘I found you! I’m home now. …I think he had a guardian angel looking out for him, directing him back to my house. I love him so much and feel we were meant to be together. He belongs here. Mr. Fancy will never want for a home, food or love again.

Atchoum (“Sneezy”) is a unique cat who has very long and abundant hair along with a set of piercing golden eyes who lives in Quebec, Canada with his human Nathalie. Atchoum’s long hair is due to a hormonal disorder called hypertrichosis, which causes rapid hair growth in animals and humans. This long hair makes Atchoum look a bit messy and even like a small dog at times, but Atchoum is all cat all the time.
