The Menil Drawing Institute in Houston is implementing the Menil Drawing Institute Scholars Program. The pre-Doctoral Fellowship comes with a stipend of $3,000 per month, and the Research Fellowship comes with up to $5,000 per month for living expenses. With an application deadline on December 11th, artists and scholars (with masters degrees) are invited to apply.

The fellows will be provided with furnished housing in a recently refurbished historic bungalow on the Menil campus. The fellowship is nine months long, following the academic calendar (September-June). The pre-Doctoral Fellowship is intended for researchers who work in fields pertaining to modern and contemporary drawing practices. The Research Fellowship is for scholars, conservators, artists, choreographers, writers, or others whose practice pertains to modern and contemporary drawing. The fellows are expected to reside in Houston for the duration of the fellowship, and to be an active part of the cultural and intellectual life at the Menil, and deliver a public presentation of the their research. 

The fellows will have access to the collections, archives, and staff at the Menil, and to libraries throughout Houston, including the Menil’s library, Fondren Library at Rice University, the Libraries of the University of Houston, and the Hirsch Library at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In addition, they can request references via Inter-Library Loan via the Menil Library. Fellows will be assigned offices at the Menil Drawing Institute.

The Menil Drawing Institute opened in late 2018. The establishment of a Fellowship Program is a key component of the Menil Drawing Institute as it aspires to become a major research center on modern and contemporary drawing. The program will foster the highest level of scholarship and make possible rich, interdisciplinary, object-based conversations on the drawing medium’s history, theory, criticism, and practice.

Put down your paintbrush and art supplies. And before you sit down for your favorite holiday dishes and all-day football — walk over to your city’s holiday parade. Here are five in the state, selected from the dozens of holiday parades taking place in Texas during this week of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The H-E-B Thanksgiving Parade: Houston, Thursday, November 28 at 9:00am

The Parade is located in downtown Houston and is FREE for all. For those who would like to purchase general seating, you can do so here. For more on this, the largest Thanksgiving day parade in the state, go here.

The Dallas Holiday Parade: Saturday, December 7 at 8:00am

The Holiday parade is the City’s largest one-day, outdoor event. More than 350 television stations in 159 markets have syndicated the parade. It has become a holiday tradition for thousands of families throughout North Texas and coast to coast.

Sun Bowl Thanksgiving Day Parade El Paso: November 28 at 10:00am

The El Paso Downtown Lions Club organized the Parade in 1935. The parade was held on New Year’s Day from 1936 until 1978 when the event was rescheduled for Thanksgiving Day. The holiday pageant is planned, coordinated and produced by volunteer efforts and draws an annual crowd of over 250,000 spectators. The Sun Bowl Parade is the largest community event in the West Texas, New Mexico and Mexico area and brings together service clubs and civic organizations as well as all sectors of business and industries within the community.

The Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony, San Antonio: Friday, November 29 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Chuy’s Children Giving to Children Parade, Austin: November 30 at 11:00am

2019 marks the 31st Annual Children Giving to Children Parade, benefiting Austin Police Operation Blue Santa. To date, we have collected over a quarter of a million toys for the children of Central Texas. And it is made possible by the thousands of spectators, young and old alike, who come oute, who came out each year and share in the great joy of giving. it’s an event complete with giant inflatable balloons, festive holiday floats, spectacular marching bands and Santa, that brings a smile to the child who gives and to the child who otherwise might not see anything under the tree Christmas Morning.

The much-hyped unveiling of Tesla’s electric pickup truck went off script when supposedly unbreakable window glass splintered twice when hit with a large metal ball.

Law enforcement has struck a blow against the group that compromised Twitter chief Jack Dorsey's account, albeit relatively late. Motherboard has learned that police arrested a former leader of Chuckling Squad (unnamed as the person is a child) roughly two weeks ago. The suspect allegedly used SIM swapping to obtain Dorsey's phone number, while others in the group helped with defacing the CEO's account with random messages and slurs.

Debug, another member of the group, also claimed that the suspect was responsible for multiple other hijacks, including one against Santa Clara County's Deputy District Attorney Erin West. The attack was a response to West convicting Joel Ortiz, a SIM swapper who pleaded guilty to using the swap to steal $5 million in cryptocurrency.

The unnamed individual has so far denied the allegations.

Chuckling Squad has taken credit for compromising other high-profile accounts, including that of actress Chloe Moretz. The campaign led to Twitter temporarily disabling tweeting via SMS until it could find a security measure to prevent similar incidents.

It's a significant arrest, but Debug suggested that it won't do much to affect Chuckling Squad's cohesion. The individual was reportedly booted out of the group in October, and there's no indication that the others are facing arrest as we write this. The arrest might serve as a deterrent to some potential account hijackers, but it might not do much to dissuade Chuckling Squad itself.

Current Charles Adams Studio Projects (CASP) Artist-in-Residence, Danielle Demetria East, is curating and hosting “The Ultimate Zine Party” on December 6 as part of the popular First Friday Art Trail (FFAT) in Lubbock, Texas. Featuring more than 30 zines from around the globe, Texas artists represented include Ashley Hoff and Julian Garza of San Antonio; Sabina Gartler, Ryan Holloway, Alexandra Constantinou, Mary McCall-Pineda, and Veek of Houston; Lisa Huffaker, Julia Baar, and Angela Faz of Dallas/Arlington; and Jessica Lambert, Gabrielle Walter, and Courtney Tyler of Lubbock. 

East is a self-published artist/author herself. (See her book of poetry, Melanated Magic.) About “The Ultimate Zine Party” East states, “…the art world sees [zines] as crafty, and the writing world doesn’t see them as professional as projects editors or with big publishers. The goal is to exhibit self-published and small books as an art form.”

More about the event’s curator, artist Danielle Demetria East:

“Originally from La Grange, Texas, East lived the majority of her life around her family (in particularly her grandmother) and in the rural areas of Fayette County, Texas. Recently, East was a graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a degree in Studio Arts where she studied abroad in Prague, Czech Republic and received the Austin-Burks Award for Most Outstanding Art Major.”

East’s work consists of mixed-media collage sculptures and zines that explore the complexities of Black Feminism through the Black Girl Magic Movement and Afro-futurism. She uses found objects to create some of her sculptures including, but not limited to, predominately black magazines, black hair products, synthetic hair, and black hair tools. She is inspired by the works of Black women such as Toni Morrison, Beyte Saar, Black beauticians, and the need for a deeper understanding of renewal within the Black femme community. East “uses a variety of culturally classed materials, found objects, and African-American Vernacular Phrases as tools for processing generational pain.”
