The number of planets on which complex life could exist in the Milky Way may be as high as 100 milli

by Mark Strauss

The number of planets on which complex life could exist in the Milky Way may be as high as 100 million. Researchers arrived at the number by computing a "Biological Complexity Index," which rates planets on a scale of 0 to 1.0, based upon characteristics assumed to be important for supporting multicellular life.

Darth Maul Makeup Tutorial

by Amy Ratcliffe

Darth Maul makeup

If you take a quick glance at the above photo of Darth Maul, it looks like a fantastic makeup job with prosthetic horns that have been blended in to look natural. Once you examine the image though, you’ll see it’s all flat – even horns are painted on with makeup. Alexys Fleming is a talented artist and has transformed herself into a shark, Mystique, Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and many other characters. In this video, she goes over the specifics on how to apply Darth Maul makeup using the following products:

Mehron Paradise Paint: Red
Graftobian Pro Paint: Black
BH Cosmetics Eyeshadows: dark red, light gold, gold, light brown, dark grey, black
NYX Cosmetics Eyebrow Marker (medium)

3D Design Tips — Finishing and Post-Processing Your 3D Printed Objects #3DThursday #3DPrinting

by Matt

Pasted Image 5 29 14 7 14 AM

For those looking to pick up a few new finishing techniques for design for 3D printing, you can now read most of the Skill Builder that I wrote for MAKE Issue 34 online here:

The domain of finishing techniques (i.e., everything that takes place after printing) is the craftsman’s workshop, where patience, tools, skills, and experience can transform the raw products of these machines into fully realized models. Like builders of dollhouses and model trains, many 3D printer jocks appreciate a loving and accurate rendering of a miniature world.

The results are impressive, but why should you tackle these craft skills when you could spend that time printing more plastic objects?

Makers who have mastered finishing techniques are granted wizard status by fellow 3D practitioners. Take artist Cosmo Wenman, who creates pieces that accurately mimic distressed metals and stones. And sculptor Jason Bakutis, whose sanded, painted, and polished faux marble and jade prints look remarkably like the real thing. Through careful work, pieces printed in crazy pink, green, and translucent filaments are made to resemble clay, stone, metal, and wood. How do they do that?

The desktop 3D printing community has a lot to learn from the sculptors, model railroad builders, and tabletop gamers now joining their ranks. …these extra steps aren’t just cosmetic. Your capacity to transform your models into “magical” replicas is a crucial means of communicating your inventions….

Dish Network to Accept Bitcoin as Satellite-TV Bill Payments @ Bloomberg.

Dish Network Corp. said subscribers will soon be able to pay their bills using bitcoin, the online virtual currency that’s drawn scrutiny from regulators. The satellite-TV company, which has more than 14 million customers, will begin accepting bitcoin payments in the third quarter, according to a statement today. Dish says it’s the largest company to accept bitcoin as well as the first pay-tv provider to do so.

We thought it could be interesting to someone out there to share how the orders placed at Adafruit using bitcoin was going. We launched mid November 2013 and the average amount of total bitcoin orders per day was about $1,572.14 USD, with an average order size of $231.20 USD. Peak orders was around 100/day using bitcoin, in the last 30 days it’s about 5 to 10 orders / day using bitcoin and average amount per order being $170.86 USD. Other online stores in the maker world started taking bitcoin too, if you have some coins to spend, head on over to EMSL (Evil Mad Scientist). The coolest part of this experiment for us was an Adafruit community member built a bitcoin miner and then used the coins they mined to buy Adafruit electronics with the mined coins. More bitcoin news here…. Oh, would we add bitcoin now if we didn’t have it, based on what we know now? Sure, the big spend-coin-rush is over, glad we added it when we did!

Turning Cardboard Into a Devastator Costume

by Amy Ratcliffe

Constructicons Devastator

Becoming a Transformer is a commitment. Not only is the costume challenging to construct, it’s also hot and uncomfortable. Instructables user SpicyPandaCreations has tackled a few of the characters from the series already, and this time it’s all about Devastator. I never get tired of seeing how he uses cardboard to make full blown, impressive costumes. Besides cardboard, he incorporated soda caps, mini LED flashlights, shoe laces, and other every day items in the Transformer. Making the face seems like one of the easier portions of the build:

1. The face is comprised of 6 main pieces: 2 cheeks, a mouth, 2 cheek bones, and a forehead (pic 1 + pic 2)

2. Once glued, add a nose. we cut a small slit in the nose to assist with breathing. Also, add a mouth, and add lips (pic 3)

*sometimes it is good to have a open mouth. if this is the case, place some black fabric on the inside of the mouth. this also helps with breathing.

3. Take your red acetate and wrap it around the eyes like a visor. If you want it a bit more sturdy, grab some clear plastic and glue the acetate to that first, and THEN wrap it around the eyes.

Despite its many desirable qualities and potential applications, graphene still isn't as widely used as it could be for one main reason – it's difficult to apply to surfaces, particularly large ones. Attempting to do so often causes damage to the graphene, or otherwise results in a non-uniform, flawed coating. Now, however, scientists have devised a method of simply spraying the stuff on, that actually improves the graphene in the process. .. Continue Reading Scientists create "spray-on graphene"

Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira (previously) recently completed work on his largest installation to date titled Transarquitetônica at Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade in São Paulo. As with much of his earlier sculptural and installation work the enormous piece is built from tapumes, a kind of temporary siding made from inexpensive wood that is commonly used to obscure construction sites. Oliveira uses the repurposed wood pieces as a skin nailed to an organic framework that looks intentionally like a large root system. Because the space provided by the museum was so immense, the artist expanded the installation into a fully immersive environment where viewers are welcome to enter the artwork and explore the cavernous interior. Transarquitetônica will be on view through the end of November this year, and you can watch the video above by Crane TV to hear Oliveira discuss its creation.

Man Builds Concrete 3D Printer in His Garage

by Adam Fabio

ConcretePrinter

[Andrey Rudenko] is building a house in his garage. Not with nails and lumber, but with concrete extruded by his 3D printer. We’ve seen concrete 3D printers in the past, but unlike those projects, [Andrey] isn’t part of a of a university or corporation. He’s just a contractor with a dream. His printer is directly derived from the RepRap project. It’s even commanded by Pronterface.

[Andrey] started with an Arduino Mega 2560 based RepRap RAMPS style controller. His big printer needed big NEMA34 stepper motors, far beyond the current capacity of the stock RAMPS stepper drivers. [Andrey] got in touch with [James] at MassMind who helped him with an open source THB6064AH based driver. [James] even came up with an adaptor cable and PCB which makes the new drivers a drop-in replacement.

Now that his printer was moving, [Andrey] needed a material to print. Concrete chemistry is a science all its own. There are many specialty blends of concrete with specific strength and drying times. Trucking in custom mixtures can get expensive. [Andrey] has come up with his own mixture based on bags of regular concrete mix, sand, and some additives. [Andrey's] special sauce doesn’t cure especially quickly, but it is viscous enough to print with.

Every piece of [Andrey's] printer had to be designed and refined, including the nozzle. The concrete printer works somewhat like a frostruder, extruding concrete in 20mm wide by 5mm tall layers. He’s even managed to print overhanging layers and arches exactly like a giant RepRap Mendel.

The printer’s great unveiling will be this summer. [Andrey] plans to print a playhouse sized castle over the course of a week. He’s looking to collaborate with architects, builders, and other like-minded folks. We’d suggest uploading the project to  Hackaday.io!

An example of the printer’s output:

Meet Jimmy: An Open Source Biped Robot From Intel

by Adam Fabio

Jimmy_Arm_Up

Intel’s CEO [Brian Krzanich] stopped by the Re/Code conference to announce Jimmy, the first robot from the 21st Century Robot project. The project is the brainchild of [Brian David Johnson], Intel’s resident futurist. We love the project’s manifesto:

Robot Is: Imagined first. Easy to build. Completely open source. Fiercely social. Intentionally iterative. Filled with humanity and dreams. Thinking for her/him/itself.

Jimmy may not be all those things yet, but he definitely is exciting. For starters, he wasn’t built in some secret lab at Intel HQ. Much of Jimmy’s construction took place at Trossen Robotics, a name well known to Hackaday. [Matt] and [Andrew] at Trossen describe all the details in their video down past the break.

This version of Jimmy is a research robot, which mean’s he’s not going to come cheap. Jimmy sports an Intel i5 NUC motherboard, 20 Dynamixel servos, a 5052 aluminum frame and a host of sensors. A  4S 14.8v 4000mAh LiPo battery will power Jimmy for 30 to 60 minutes between charges, so be sure to budget for a few spare packs. The most striking aspect of Jimmy is his 3D printed shell. The 21st Century Robot Project gave him large, friendly eyes and features, which will definitely help with the social aspect of their goals.

Jimmy is all about open source. He can run two flavors of Linux: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or a custom version of Yocto Pokey. There is a lot to be said for running and developing on the same hardware. No specialized toolchains for cross compiling, no NFS shares to move binaries around. If you need to make a change, you can plug a monitor (or launch an VNC session) and do everything with Jimmy’s on-board computer. Jimmy’s software stack is based upon the DARwIn OP platform, and a ROS port is in the works.

We’re excited about Jimmy, but at $16,000 USD, he’s a bit outside our budget. Thankfully a smaller consumer version of Jimmy will soon be available for around 1/10th the cost.

Papilio Duo: FPGA, Logic Analyzer, Debugger, and Arduino Compatible

by Brian Benchoff

Back

It’s been a while since we’ve seen some new boards that combine an FPGA and an Arduino, so naturally the state of the art is a little bit behind. The latest from [Jack Gassett], the Papilio Duo, aims to change that by addressing all the complaints of the original Papilio and adding some neat, modern features that you would expect on a board designed in 2014.

On board the Duo is an ATMega32u4, the same chip used in the Arduino Leonardo, allowing for easy integration with your standard Arduino projects. The top of the board is where the real money is. There’s a Spartan 6 FPGA with 9k logic cells, enough to run emulate some of the classic computers of yore, including the famous SID chip, Yamaha YM2149, and the Atari POKEY (!).  With host and device USB, 512k or 2M of SRAM, and an ADC on the FPGA inputs, this board should be able to handle just about everything you would want to throw at it. There’s even a breakout for HDMI on the bottom.

There are a few interesting software features of the Duo, including a full debugger for the ATMega chip, thanks to an emulated Atmel JTAG ICE MKII. Yes, an Arduino-compatible board finally has a real debugger. The FPGA can also implement a 32 channel logic analyzer, making this not only an extremely powerful dev board, but also a useful tool to keep around the workbench.

Alternatives to Thingiverse, For Upset Designers

by Site Admin

With controversy brewing around the most popular 3D model repository, Thingiverse, some ask what alternative repos may exist. We found more than a few.

No two repositories are identical, however. They differ in:

  • Pricing (some are free, some priced, some mixed)
  • Size (some have tens of thousands of models, while others have only dozens)
  • Content (some focus on specific topics, others are general)
  • Printability (some exclusively hold printable objects and others don’t)
  • Usage (some hold models only for use on their printers or service)
  • Modifiability (some hold static models, some have dynamic adjustable models)
  • Usability (some sites are far more usable than others)

Like Thingiverse there are some repos built by manufacturers to provide their users with things to print:

YouMagine (Ultimaker)
Treasure Island (Pirate3D, obviously)
123D’s Gallery (Autodesk)

Some manufacturers offer models usable only on their equipment or services:
Shapeways
Sculpteo
MakerBot’s Digital Store
Cubify (some content is generally usable beyond 3D Systems equipment)

In no particular order, here are a few of the larger or more recently launched 3D model repositories, all with different characteristics. Note that some include non-printable models, so be careful what you select.

CGtrader
Turbosquid
SketchFab
3D Via
TF3DM
GrabCAD
Uformit
Bld3r
Redpah
3DAGOGO
Cults
3D Model Free
FABFabbers
Cuboyo
MyMiniFactory
FabMe
SproutForm
Repables

We’re quite certain we missed MANY other repos; our apologies.

There are also innumerable small boutique sites, like BHold, which offer a very small selection of their custom-designed products.

For an alternative approach, you could also consider using the code control service GitHub to store 3D models, as it now includes STL file support. Similarly, you could also roll your own server with something like Media Goblin, which also offers 3D model support.

The world of 3D printing does not end with Thingiverse; there are literally dozens of other places to find and distribute 3D models - and we expect many more in coming months.

rollership:

Man Arrested After Drinking Iced Tea In Public Must Take Deal Or Go To Trial

A man drinking canned iced tea in a parking lot was accosted by a plainclothes beverage cop who demanded to inspect his drink.  He was placed in handcuffs and arrested.   Even though the man was innocent and was only drinking tea, prosecutors are still trying to set him up with probation and community service.

One man, Christopher Lamont Beatty, was holding a canned beverage, while his friend, Tino Brown, was recording video using his cell phone.  That’s when the two were interrupted by a man who was interested in the man’s choice of refreshments.

A man in plainclothes, claiming to be “the police”, insisted that he turn over his beverage for an inspection.  Beatty refused the stranger’s requests, but pointed out that it was only an AriZona-brand drink, “Half-and-Half” iced tea and pink lemonade — not alcohol.

Brown and Beatty pointed out that they didn’t know the identity of the nosy man and that Beatty had committed no crime.   Still, the man demanded to examine his beverage and would not take no for an answer.

The stranger then claimed that Mr. Beatty was under arrest.  He became grabby and ended up putting Beatty in a choke-hold as he took him down to the ground.

The bully, who turned out to be Alcohol & Beverage Control Law Enforcer Rick Libero, forced Mr. Beatty face-down onto the concrete and placed him in handcuffs.

The government requests that Beatty “submit to a year of probation, do 24 hours of community service, have a mental health assessment, and submit to drug testing and warrantless searches,” reported the Fayetteville Observer.

“It would get it dismissed at the end, but I would still have to take responsibility for my actions, and I felt like I did nothing wrong,” Beatty said
