The Straight Guy's Guide to Anal Play

by Vanessa Marin

Nope, we’re not talking about putting your penis in your lady’s asshole. We’re talking about stimulating your asshole. If you’re like many straight guys, your interest in this article just plummeted. Lots of straight men are turned off by the idea of anal play (to be fair, many bi and gay men are too), and as a result are missing out on a whole world of fun. Today we’re here to convince you that it’s time to stop ignoring your ass.

The paintings of Thomas Kinkade:Everett’s Cottage, 1997A...

The paintings of Thomas Kinkade:
Everett’s Cottage, 1997
A New Day Dawning, 1997
Footprints in the Sand, 2007
San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, 1995
Mountain Paradise, Mountain Retreat II, 2006

Eventually, no longer content with the letter N’s he added to honor his wife Nanette, Thomas Kinkade began hiding human corpses or other suggestions of grim violence within his idyllic paintings. These “little frownies,” as he called them, were Thom’s dark gifts to the viewer, small but unsettling reminders of mortality. As he wrote in his 2004 autobiography, LIGHT MAKES RIGHT:

“I have long-since found that no amount of dappled sunlight or perfectly fallen New England snow can mask the stench of shit and Death that has enveloped this corrupt world. The rotting flesh beneath the skin of this ‘life’ has ruined me with its acrid fumes, and until Lord Jesus himself finally wrenches these hateful brushes from my stiffening claws, I intend to make goddamned sure everyone fills their fucking lungs.”

Every Girl Needs a Gay is a new social media website that aims to connect heterosexual women with gay men who can help them live out their passe Sex And The City bullshit fantasies.

According to the company’s website, “Every Girl Needs a Gay is the first friend finder of its kind. We are an online matchmaking service for those seeking their GBF.”

The company was founded by self-proclaimed “consummate artist, accomplished web designer and developer, entrepreneur and digital marketing expert” Gini Garbick, who seems to believe she invented the concept of a fag hag.

“I knew it was imperative that I get this right,” Garbick said in a statement. “Being the first brings a great deal of responsibility. There is no room for error.”

“We’re calling our eNewsletter ‘CHER!'” the website reads. “Timeless, original, and FABULOUS. Her essence is an adjective that says it ALL!”

Membership to the site ranges from $9.99 to $19.99 per month depending on which level of membership you purchase. That’s right, fellas, you have to pay to be treated like a straight woman’s puppy that follows her around everywhere she goes, reassuring her that you’ll never break her heart the way that last jerk she dated did, and then being sure to get the hell out of the way when her Prince Charming finally does come along to sweep her off her feet.

So what’s in it for you?

Don’t ask.

Globalization and the Environment Collide in Mary Iverson’s Mixed Media Paintings of Shipping Containers

by Kate Sierzputowski

iverson-new

Mary Iverson fills natural and manmade landscapes with colorful shipping containers, objects haphazardly stacked on each other and taking up a majority of the otherwise tranquil scenes. The containers and boxes are cross-hatched with overlaid lines, connecting them a predetermined pattern seemingly known only by the artist.

Iverson explains her work by saying, “My paintings are colorful abstractions that spring from the theme of the industrial shipping terminal. The canvases feature mass accumulations of shipping containers and container cranes in various perspectives. My work employs a network of searching perspective lines and layers of interlocking, colorful planes and rectangles that suggest both deep space and flat surface.”

Part painting and part collage (the pieces often incorporate found photography), her artworks address what happens when globalization and the environment collide, material possessions doubling and tripling until they spill into the natural world around them. The Seattle-based painter gathers the bulk of her source imagery for her sketches through yearly trips to parks across the country, camping and photographing the landscape around her.

Iverson received her MFA in Painting from the University of Washington in 2002 and currently teaches painting and drawing at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, WA as a tenured faculty member. Iverson has two upcoming October exhibitions, one at Gallery FB69 in Munster, Germany and another at G. Gibson Gallery in Seattle. Check out more images of Iverson’s work on her Instagram here. The making of Star Wars at Madame Tussauds is beyond impressive

by Casey Chan on Sploid, shared by Casey Chan to Gizmodo

When Madame Tussauds nails a wax sculpture, they really nail it. And for Star Wars at Madame Tussauds in London, they perfectly recreated pretty much every character in the saga in such lifelike detail that it looks like the sculptors and artists are just applying makeup to the real actors in this behind the scenes footage.

Ontario-based photographer Stephen Orlando is fascinated with human movement and uses programmable LED light sticks attached to kayak paddles, people, racquets, and other objects to translate that movement into photographic light paintings. The act of recording motion on the surface of water surrounded by reflections creates a surprisingly unique effect, almost sculptural in nature. You can see many more photos in his kayaking, canoeing, and swimming galleries.

All Six Branches of Bill the Butcher Are Suddenly Closed

by Bethany Jean Clement

Mystery meat, money problems, and a mattress store magnate... what a saga it is.
  • ROBERT ULLMAN
  • Mystery meat, money problems, and a mattress store magnate... what a saga it is.

The saga of the local butcher-shop chain known as Bill the Butcher goes back to 2010 here at The Stranger, when Matthew Richter wrote about how the business would not divulge its purportedly local/organic meat suppliers, nor label its meats by source. After the article appeared—and after Richter made 18 phone calls and every certified organic beef ranch in Washington state said they did not supply meat to Bill the Butcher—Bill the Butcher became more transparent in its labeling and suppliers, and opened more stores.

Along the way, cofounder William Von Schneidau and the C.O.O. parted ways with Bill the Butcher, filing lawsuits for breach of contract and more. Cofounder and marketing consultant J'Amy Owens runs the company now, and in summer 2012, the Madison Valley and Bellevue branches closed.

Now Eater Seattle and Wallyhood report that all six branches of Bill the Butcher are closed, with an ambiguous sign posted at each shop:

Due to circumstances beyond our control we are closed until further notice.

Thank you for your support, your patronage and welcoming us to your neighborhood. We hope to see you soon.

The Seattle Times noted the company's cash flow problems in 2011. Then last week, the Times reported that Sleep Country USA founder Sunny Kobe Cook says Bill the Butcher's J’Amy Owens owes her more than $40,000 from a personal loan, as Cook wrote in a blog post entitled "The Price of Friendship":

...the prompt of this post... is the story of J’Amy Owens. If you Google her name, you will find countless hits noting her as a “retail guru”, a “Diva of Retail” and currently a “Meat Activist” and the CEO of a publicly traded company, Bill the Butcher. She once graced the cover of Inc. Magazine under the headline “Sales Guru to the Stars”. Even such illustrious credentials does not preclude one from being a deadbeat...

My reason for sharing this is to serve as a warning to others – NEVER loan money to family or friends. You are not doing them a favor, no matter how much it seems true in the immediate.

Sage words from the mattress-store magnate. Meanwhile, William Von Schneidau—originally the Bill in Bill the Butcher—now runs BB Ranch butcher shop in the Pike Place Market; he has not yet returned a call asking for his take on the matter.

J'Amy Owens' voicemail is full.

This Is the First Weekend in America With No Saturday Morning Cartoons

by Robert Sorokanich on Gizmodo, shared by Mike Fahey to Kotaku

This Is the First Weekend in America With No Saturday Morning Cartoons

Saturday morning American broadcast TV was once animation's home field. Filling a cereal bowl with artificially colored sugar pebbles and staring at the tube was every kid's weekend plan. Not any more: For the first time in 50-plus years, you won't find a block of animation on broadcast this morning. It's the end of an era.

Japanese artist Shintaro Ohata (previously) currently has two new sculptural paintings on view at Mizuma Gallery in Singapore. Ohata places vibrantly painted figurative sculptures in the foreground of similarly styled paintings that when viewed directly appear to be a single artwork. In some sense it appears as though the figures have broken free from the canvas. These artworks, along with several of his other paintings, join works by Yoddogawa Technique, Enpei Ito, Osamu Watanabe, and Akira Yoshida, for the Sweet Paradox show that runs through August 10th. No, No, NO: Seattle's Hurricane Cafe Is Closing

by Bethany Jean Clement

hurricane-420.jpg
  • JMazzolaa/Flickr

At the end of this year, Seattle will lose yet another landmark old-school spot: the Hurricane Cafe. Guess who bought the downtown property and will be tearing the Hurricane down? Amazon (under the name of its cuter, smaller-sounding affiliate Acorn Development LLC).

Owner Neil Scott confirms that after two decades of 24-7 service, the Hurricane's last day will be New Year's Day 2015 (which is considerate for those who'll need it after New Year's Eve partying). Before it was the Hurricane, the space was the also-awesomely-divey, also-24-hours the Dog House for approximately a grazillion years—and before that, it was another 24-hour place called the Bohemian Continental, which moved into the building in the 1920s, meaning almost 100 years of 24-hour service on the site. Scott started out as a dishwasher at Beth's Cafe (which, miraculously, is staying open, for now, as far as we know), and was at the Hurricane when it opened. He says he's got two employees now who've been at the Hurricane for a dozen years, two more who've been there for a decade, and two clocking in at seven years each. Morale is "pretty good," he says. "Everybody's sticking around until the end."

"It’s not the way we wanted to go out for sure—losing a lease and getting torn down," he says. "But we’re a standalone building downtown with a parking lot—it was bound to happen."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo.......................

Thanks, Slog tipper Justin.

UK sculptor Robin Wight creates dramatic scenes of wind-blown fairies clutching dandelions, clinging to trees, and seemingly suspended in midair, all with densely wrapped forms of stainless steel wire. The artist currently has several pieces on view at the Trentham Gardens and sells a number of DIY wire sculpting kits from his website where he also discusses in great detail how each piece is built. See more over on Facebook. (via Reddit).
