Booze Production in Dripping Springs, Austin in ‘The Onion,’ and More A.M. Intel

by Nadia Chaudhury

The latest three restaurant tidbits in Austin served right now.

— Dripping Springs has become the epicenter for alcohol production recently, especially with Treaty Oak’s new distillery. KVUE spoke to some businesses, including Dripping Springs Vodka, Swift Distillery, and Twisted X Brewery, about the Hill Country city's welcoming nature.

— The Hightower is closed today for some upkeep, but will reopen tomorrow, Tuesday, September 22.

— Of course Austin would pop up on The Onion’s satirical list of "Best Cities for Millennials," where pastimes include "food trucks" and "unsuccessfully pursuing misguided dreams longer than any of your other college friends."

Android Wear now works with iPhones

by Unknown
Carl Knutson

Interesting. I wonder if this was the plan all along or if someone decided to do this specifically after the Apple watch was already out.

Editor's note: As of September 2, you can check out new watches from Huawei, ASUS, and Motorola that all work with iPhones.

(Cross posted on the Official Google Blog)

When you wear something every day, you want to be sure it really works for you. That’s why Android Wear offers countless design choices, so you can find the watch that fits your style. Want a round watch with a more classic look? Feel like a new watch band? How about changing things up every day with watch faces from artists and designers? With Android Wear you can do all of that. And now, Android Wear watches work with iPhones.

Android Wear for iOS is rolling out today. Just pair your iPhone (iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, or 6 Plus running iOS 8.2+) with an Android Wear watch to bring simple and helpful information right to your wrist:
  • Get your info at a glance: Check important info like phone calls, messages, and notifications from your favorite apps. Android Wear features always-on displays, so you’ll never have to move your wrist to wake up your watch.
  • Follow your fitness: Set fitness goals, and get daily and weekly views of your progress. Your watch automatically tracks walking and running, and even measures your heart rate.
  • Save time with smart help: Receive timely tips like when to leave for appointments, current traffic info, and flight status. Just say “Ok Google” to ask questions like “Is it going to rain in London tomorrow?” or create to-dos with “Remind me to pack an umbrella.”

Today, Android Wear for iOS works with the LG Watch Urbane. All future Android Wear watches, including those from Huawei (pictured above), ASUS, and Motorola will also support iOS, so stay tuned for more.

Dr. Seuss once said: “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” We agree. So whoever You are, and whatever You like—Android Wear lets you wear what you want.

Rooftop Bar, Dance Club, and More to Open in Domain’s Rock Rose

by Nadia Chaudhury
Carl Knutson

Looks like the Domain is getting some interesting new places to eat and drink. Good thing we can ride our bikes there.

New bars for the far north mall.

The Domain’s Rock Rose shopping district is getting bigger with the addition of four new bars and restaurants. There’s rooftop and rum cocktail bar 77 Degrees, dance nightclub The Rose Room, cocktail lounge Saint Genevieve, and beer-focused Jack and Ginger’s Irish Pub. The projects are helmed by Jeff and Darren Van Delden of the Union Venture Group, which also oversees sports bar The Park on South Lamar and in the Domain, and edible cocktail provider Somersault.

The two-story dance club Rose Room will serve as the "flagship party spot" with table reservations. Like the group’s now-shuttered Houston location, Saint Genevieve will offer internationally-inspired shared plates, wine, and Sunday brunch with a Bloody Mary bar. Jack and Ginger’s will have 82 beers on tap and Irish/American comfort food. The establishments are projected to open sometime in the fall.

Dick Clark and Associates's Jeff Krolicki planned the overall building on 11500 Rock Rose Avenue where the four bars will be found. The firm also worked on Star Bar, Amy's Ice Creams, Hangar Lounge, and others. Chris McCray (Lenoir) designed 77 Degrees and The Rose Room, while Darren Van Delden worked on Saint Genevieve and Jack and Ginger’s.

Other planned restaurants in the works for the new Domain district include East Side King’s Thai Kun brick and mortar, and another Second Bar + Kitchen.

Campus Institution Dog & Duck Pub Will Reopen in East Austin

by Nadia Chaudhury

Check out that plywood.

After shutting down last October, the adored Dog & Duck Pub will reopen on Webberville Road sometime this summer, as first reported by Community Impact. There were many rumors about one of Austin’s saddest shutters before it closed, but the owners made immediate plans to restart in a new location in East Austin.

Dog & Duck 2.0 will look similar to its first iteration, including many of the same returning staffers. Co-owner Susan Forrester told the publication that they took furniture items, like the bar, tables, and chairs, from the old building before it was demolished. There will be seating inside and out. 40 beers will be on tap, and the British-focused menu will be changed slightly.

The team behind the bar were initially going to renovate the existing building on the property, but pricey improvements made them decide to wreck it instead and start all over. The second version will be found in Suite A on 2400 Webberville Road by the end of August.

It's nice to see that Google is integrating some of the Chrome to Phone features directly into their website. In addition to this, if you are signed in to Google you can search "find my phone" and it will bring up the phone locator page for you.

Headed somewhere? Instead of opening up your phone and searching for a location, you can now just type “Send Directions” into Google on your computer, and send those directions right to your Android device.

Check Out: A New Index of Copyright Fair Use Cases

by David Malki
Carl Knutson

I feel like Nate will be interested in this. Also, Cindy might be interested in the MGM vs Honda thing for Bond reasons.

THE BATTLE OF COPYRIGHT 2011
Source: Christopher Dombres via Flickr

The U.S. Copyright Office has launched a new Fair Use Index:

Fair use is a longstanding and vital aspect of American copyright law. The goal of the Index is to make the principles and application of fair use more accessible and understandable to the public by presenting a searchable database of court opinions, including by category and type of use (e.g., music, internet/digitization, parody).

The Fair Use Index is designed to be user-friendly. For each decision, we have provided a brief summary of the facts, the relevant question(s) presented, and the court’s determination as to whether the contested use was fair.

The Index itself is a series of summaries of key legal decisions regarding copyright and fair use, largely from the last sixty years.

It’s super interesting to me! Wondermark is, of course, created using images from the public domain. Which is not the same as fair use; public domain works have no copyright, whereas fair use is made of works that are copyrighted.

But copyright in all its gleaming facets is still a topic near and dear to my heart as an artist, author, and attentive internet citizen: I’ve written a fair amount about copyright and intellectual property.

The Fair Use Index includes some watershed copyright cases, such as 1978′s Walt Disney Productions v. Air Pirates, the precedent that defines the infringement threshold for copying copyrighted characters for “parody” purposes.

It might be said that under the Air Pirates test, the entire product line of the t-shirt website TeeFury is illegal, and I notice that very conveniently, most of their designs are only available in strictly limited, before-they-can-send-us-a-cease-and-desist editions.

Also included is the “Betamax” case, 1984′s Sony Corporation v. Universal City Studios, which ruled that recording a free broadcast of live television onto videotape for later home viewing — referred to as “time-shifting” — was, indeed, legal. “Home taping” (of both television and radio) was the big I.P. boogieman threat before “piracy”, and this court decision was what enabled the VCR, as a consumer device, to exist at all.

In browsing, I also came across some interesting cases I hadn’t heard about before, such as:

• 1985′s MGM v. Honda Motor Corp., in which MGM sued — and won — claiming that a spy-themed Honda commercial was too reminiscent of their copyrighted character, James Bond (and that it damaged the James Bond brand to show him in a Honda);

• 2004′s MasterCard v. Nader 2000, in which MasterCard sued — and lost — a copyright infringement suit against Ralph Nader’s presidential campaign commercials which copied/parodied its “priceless” slogan;

• 2006′s CleanFlicks v. Soderbergh, in which the company CleanFlicks, which edited objectionable content out of Hollywood movies and re-sold them to customers who preferred them that way, sought a declaratory judgment that doing so was legal — and lost. They thought they’d be OK because they’d buy a copy of the actual DVD, add in the edited version, and re-sell that precise physical DVD — not unlike buying a book, blacking out various passages, and then re-selling that physical book. Anyway, they lost;

• And of course, 2011′s CCA and B v. F+W Media, which ruled that the parody book Elf Off the Shelf (featuring a drunken, naughty elf), was, indeed, legal. Thank God for that.

The Fair Use Index: really great browsing, if you’re interested in copyright!

Peach State Ale Trail Passport Promo

Carl Knutson

This seems like a cool idea. I know that Oregon and San Diego have something similar. I haven't really seen something like this that covers all of Texas, although the Austin Beer Guide is pretty close.

I also like this idea:
http://www.peachstatealetrail.com/product/georgia-cap-map/
Would be cool to make one for Texas.

With over 40 breweries throughout the state, Georgia’s beer culture continues to thrive and if you want to experience it all you’re going to need a proper guide. The folks at Peach State Ale Trail are here to guide you through your exploration of southern breweries. Whether it’s self guided or a full fledge tour you can enjoy discounts and social events along the way with the Peach State Pale Trail Passport program.

Specially for Untappd users, the Peach State Ale Trail would like to give you the chance to unlock a $5.00 discount on your Passport purchase. Simply checkin to any beer in the state of Georgia between now and May 6th and this sweet discount could be yours.

To get all the details, just head on over to http://www.peachstatealetrail.com/passport.

New breweries in Austin area this year:
http://spirits.blog.austin360.com/2015/02/26/2015-seeing-a-boom-of-austin-area-breweries/
I met Chris Orf at some beer event a while back. I feel like he's been talking about opening his brewery for years.

Easy Tiger staffer joins Juliet.

BEER WIRE — 2015 is the year of local breweries, as pointed out by Austin360. Altogether, there are ten new breweries and brewpubs opening this year. The cover piece takes a closer look at four of them: Bluebonnet Beer Company, Last Stand Brewing Company, Red Horn Coffee House and Brewing Company, and Strange Land Brewery. [Austin360]

CHAIN CHARITYWIRE — Help Chipotle earn money for nonprofit Urban Roots by dining out at any of the fast casual chain’s Austin locations today. Their goal is to raise $15,000 to donate towards the organization’s youth farm field trips program. [EaterWire]

CHEF SHUFFLE — Easy Tiger’s Carly Rossmeissl will join the staff of Juliet as the executive pastry chef. She previously worked at Maialino Trattoria in New York. The new Italian restaurant is set to open on Barton Springs this spring. [EaterWire]
