Thomas Frank is scorching on the subject of university tuition hikes and the complicity of the press in blaming everything except for bulging administrations and cuts to state universities for the 30-year spiral of super-inflationary price-hikes from America's post-secondary sector. Where he really nails it, though, is about two thirds of the way through, when he discusses the mental shift that allowed all this to happen: once universities started advertising themselves as paths to individual high-earnings (instead of seats of learning and forces for national prosperity), there was no reason for anyone to want to see them as subsidized, universal, accessible institutions:

Peanut, a rescue dog who survived being set on fire as a puppy won the dubious distinction of being the “World’s Ugliest Dog” for 2014 at the Sonoma Marin Fair. Peanut’s human, Holly Chandler of Greenville, South Carolina, has said that she entered Peanut in ugly dog contests in order to raise awareness around the subject of animal abuse.
Chandler wants to use the national contest as a platform to bring awareness to animal abuse and the damage that it can cause. “It will not be about winning or losing. It will solely be about telling people his story and showing that we cannot stick our heads in the sand,” said Chandler. “Animal abuse happens, it is time to face it and come together to stop it.” Because of the fire, “Peanut” lost his lips so his teeth show, and his eyes don’t close because his eyelids were burned. She said many people have called her dog hideous, and she gets disgusting looks when they are out in public. But Chandler says after lots of love and understanding, “Peanut” is now a happy and healthy dog.- WITN 7

Christopher LantzSo true, dudes do confuse the two.

she wants him to ram the soul out her body
I actually looked into this once, because it seemed so odd to me. He’s actually talking about how his mom supported him through all his years of training and that she died before she got to see him win or something like that. So that’s her sad, sympathetic face…not her “ram my soul out of my body” face.
Dudes frequently confuse the two…
Christopher LantzHurrah!

"QUANTUM SHOT" #873 Link - article by Avi Abrams You cannot "step into the same river twice", but some rivers are so full of heavenly colour that you are tempted to linger

![]() ![]() ![]() (images via) To access the river you will have to fly to La Macarena and then take a horseback trip into the "Serrania de la Macarena" National Park, so it is not that easy to get there - but the rewards of witnessing and even swimming in all this radiant glory speak for themselves. Christopher LantzI really like this video because I really like English accents.
Siobhan Thompson of Anglophenia gives a wonderful verbal tour of the British Isles, performing 17 of the regional accents found in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Yesterday President Barack Obama hosted the first ever Maker Faire at the White House (see previous post). The event featured more than 30 DIY inventions, including a robotic giraffe and a low-cost newborn incubator. The President announced several initiatives during the event intended to help support and educate American makers. He also named July 18th a National Day of Making.
“Our parents and our grandparents created the world’s largest economy and strongest middle class not by buying stuff, but by building stuff — by making stuff, by tinkering and inventing and building; by making and selling things first in a growing national market and then in an international market — stuff “Made in America.” — President Barack Obama

House of Halo has stripped the music out of the music video for the 2013 song “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry. They left in some of Katy’s actual vocals and then added in silly noises, voices, farts, and burps. We previously wrote about their musicless version of the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
Here is the original music video:

In this new animated episode of Realistic Garfield by The Pete Holmes Show, a veterinarian finds the famous comic strip cat Garfield to be morbidly obese and his owner Jon Arbuckle turns out to be a flat-out psychopath.

The Robot Restaurant is a Tokyo club that has gained notoriety for its mind-boggling sci-fi cabaret show and its garishly illuminated interior. Completed in 2012 at a cost of $10 million, nearly every surface of the club is decorated in lights, mirrors, or flat panel monitors. The robot cabaret show, however, is the main event. The spectacle encompasses seven or so acts including robot boxing, dancers riding a robot tank, and other sci-fi madness. For more on the Robot Restaurant, see this For 91 Days in Tokyo post (featuring a couple videos) and this Tokyo Weekender article.
