Flying drones is a lot more complicated than it used to be. These days, drone pilots need to register their toys with the FAA, be aware of drone-specific laws and even notify local airports of their flights in certain sceneries. It's a lot to keep tr...

Plant life cycle shows a breathing Earth

by Nathan Yau

NASA mapped the annual cycle of all plant life on the planet in this animated map.

Satellite instruments reveal the yearly cycle of plant life on the land and in the water. On land, the images represent the density of plant growth, while in the oceans they show the chlorophyll concentration from tiny, plant-like organisms called phytoplankton. From December to February, during the northern hemisphere winter, plant life in the higher latitudes is minimal and receives little sunlight.

Need to start saving up for this beast. $5k for 4k.

Dell seems not to have gotten the memo that CES is actually short for the Consumer Electronics Show. With few exceptions, the company has mostly used its time in Vegas this week to unveil business-grade products, including a 2-in-1, a budget notebook...

Some good ideas in there.

When you're using power tools to complete a big project, battery life is a big problem. You probably don't want to find out you need a battery swap when you're in the middle of drilling. Thankfully, Black and Decker has a way to give you a heads-up:...

A Logarithmic Map of the Entire Known Universe in One Image

by Christopher Jobson

map-1

Trying to imagine the scope of the cosmos is nearly impossible, but musician and artist Pablo Carlos Budassi decided to make a visual attempt by cramming the entire known universe into a single image. Using scores of satellite images and photos snapped from NASA’s rovers, he painstakingly pieced together many of the prominent features of the universe as observed from our solar system in the form of a logarithmic map. Logarithms are useful for understanding large numbers or distances, so in Budassi’s map each consecutive ‘ring’ around the circle represents several orders of magnitude further than the one before it.

Budassi was aided by similar (though less visually stunning) logarithmic maps produced by astronomers at Princeton back in 2005. In this map, our sun and solar system are seen in the middle, followed by the Milky Way Galaxy, another ring of nearby galaxies like Andromeda, all the way out to cosmic radiation and plasma generated by the bing bang on the furthest outskirts of the image.

You can see a much larger version of the map here and read a bit more about it on Tech Insider. (via I F*cking Love Science)

Residential Murals Mix Signature Street Art Styles With Elements of Island Life

by Kate Sierzputowski

Recently several street artists including Gorg One, Seth Globepainter, and Meo gathered for a street art festival on Reunion Island to turn the La Rose des Vents neighborhood into a mural haven, covering many of its large walls in representational depictions of children, elephants, and sea creatures. The hosting island is a French region located just east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, an exotic location for the festival put on by the Ville Musée.

The participating artists slightly tweaked their own street art styles to include hints of island flair, some even painting images of the local inhabitants on their designated walls. Seth Globepainter brought his signature trompe l’oeil subject matter of children peering over the tops of buildings (previously featured here) to the side of one residence, while also including a collaged depiction of the ethnically diverse island on another facade. You can see more Reunion Island murals on the festival’s Facebook page here. (via Arrested Motion)
