“These things are possible. The impossible is possible. And that’s one of the reasons that I love Bernie Sanders. He sees an America that’s beyond the current limitations that we have. He sees an America where there’s hope - where things you thought could never be done can be done. That is why I support Bernie Sanders.” - Troy LaRaviere, award-winning Chicago school Principal
i’m a bit irritated at the way the idea of making public higher education free is being handled.
this npr piece (and i love me some npr) focused on one narrow point about how other highly educated countries don’t necessarily have free tuition, saying “at least on the face of it, that free tuition is not required to produce the most educated workforce in the world.“
but that’s not the point. how about we have a highly educated workforce that isn’t burdened by crippling debt? how about we even stay at our current #6 in global higher education attainment rates, but those educations don’t cause young americans to put off having children, buying homes, or saving for retirement. how about low income and first generation students being able to compete on a level tuition playing field?
how about free public education because it’s the right thing to do?
and before anyone says “how are we going to pay for it?”, read this.
