berniesanders: “These things are possible. The impossible is...

berniesanders:

“These things are possible. The impossible is possible. And that’s one of the reasons that I love Bernie Sanders. He sees an America that’s beyond the current limitations that we have. He sees an America where there’s hope - where things you thought could never be done can be done. That is why I support Bernie Sanders.” - Troy LaRaviere, award-winning Chicago school Principal

i’m a bit irritated at the way the idea of making public higher education free is being handled.

this npr piece (and i love me some npr) focused on one narrow point about how other highly educated countries don’t necessarily have free tuition, saying “at least on the face of it, that free tuition is not required to produce the most educated workforce in the world.“

but that’s not the point. how about we have a highly educated workforce that isn’t burdened by crippling debt? how about we even stay at our current #6 in global higher education attainment rates, but those educations don’t cause young americans to put off having children, buying homes, or saving for retirement. how about low income and first generation students being able to compete on a level tuition playing field?

how about free public education because it’s the right thing to do?

and before anyone says “how are we going to pay for it?”, read this.

Ghostly Portraits Painted Onto Layers of Netting by Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew

by Kate Sierzputowski

“Nostalgic” (2014), translucent fabric, wooden bed, size is not fixed, all images courtesy of Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew

Thai artist Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew paints portraits on layers of fine netting or tulle, deftly producing an analog 3D effect with subjects who appear to be sitting in chairs or lying down on beds. When circling the paintings they morph and shift, changing form depending on the viewer’s distance and location to the piece. These subjects are often his family, a way for the artist to pause his loved ones’ aging process and preserve them in time.

Nimmalaikaew first discovered the technique while a student at Silpakorn University in Bangkok after a stray speck of paint landed on a mosquito net in his studio. Witnessing the dimensionality the surface afforded the paint, he began to explore new ways in which to paint on the utilitarian material.

For each piece Nimmalaikaew begins with a digital drawing which he then prints life-size to determine the subject’s form and texture. He then begins to paint the layers with oil paint in a style that he calls “tulle-painting style.” In an 2014 interview he explained, “Over time, I have learnt that the tulle demands a different way of creating realistic light and shadow for the material. The top layer gives details for the optical illusion. Then I connect each layer with clear copolymer line to make it all fit together and create depth in the image.”

You can see more of the 33-year-old artist’s work on Yavus Gallery or the artist’s Facebook. (via Juxtapoz and Booooooom)

Crank Out Infinite Geometric Designs With The Wooden Cycloid Drawing Machine

by Kate Sierzputowski
DrawingMachine_03

Cycloid Drawing Machine, all images provided by LEAFpdx

DrawingMachine_05

Looking more like a vintage turn table than drawing device, the Cycloid Drawing Machine is inspired by drawing machines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, long before the invention of the Spirograph. Although these early toys like the harmonograph also produced complex designs, they were limited in scope. The Cycloid Drawing adjusts this previous oversight by utilizing a moving fulcrum and providing several interchangeable gears to make the machine infinitely adjustable.

Like its ancestors, this drawing machine by LEAFpdx requires no electricity and has no motors. To start one of its complex drawings all you must do is crank it by hand. The set comes with the base, three geared turntables, 18 gears, colored pens and test paper to allow for a customized device. To watch the machine’s set-up and see it in action, watch the video posted below. (via My Modern Met)

Cooper Griggs

I have been doing this for about a year now :)

just a reminder, if you’re shopping at amazon anyway, sign up your favorite charity on smile.amazon.com and shop there. it’s a tiny donation for each thing you consume, but if we’re all already spending the money, those little fractions can add up.

Murals of Faceless Figures by Seth Appear to Witness the Unseen

by Christopher Jobson

seth-1

French muralist Julien Malland (aka Seth) has been extremely prolific over the last year, traveling to far flung locations around the world including China, Tahiti, New Zealand, Italy, Canada, and even the Reunion Islands in just the last few months alone. Seth paints large-scale human figures—mostly children—that appear faceless, cut off by the edges of buildings or turned completely away from the viewer, as if looking out into the world or witnessing something we cannot see. From his artist statement:

Since 2003, [Malland] ventured across the world to exchange with street artists from different cultures, in order to broaden his horizon on life and on mural painting. From this experience he has been compelled to draw simple characters, mostly children, somehow connected to the chaotic environment in which they are revealed. Witnessing the outcome of globalization, its creations are celebrating traditions. Thus they are defining a hybrid culture between modern expression and traditional representation. His approach aims to arouse an artistic dialogue, whether it is a collaboration with local urban artists or a learning process of traditional techniques from local craftsmen.

Seth recently launched a new website sharing many new pieces and a handful of behind-the-scenes videos. You can follow him on both Instagram and Facebook.
