Coming Distractions: The Joe Dirt 2 trailer is the Back To The Future/Forrest Gump homage of your dreams

by Sam Barsanti
Alecbugg

Huh

The original Joe Dirt, that classic fable about a janitor with a mullet wig attached to his skull, is essentially a road trip movie. It’s about David Spade as the eponymous Joe Dirt, traveling around the country in an attempt to find the parents who abandoned him at the Grand Canyon as a child. For Crackle’s Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, Spade and director Fred Wolf (both of whom co-wrote the script) have decided to raise the stakes by introducing one of the most difficult road trip obstacles anyone can face: time travel. As seen in this trailer, Dirt finally has the family he’s always wanted, but when an unfortunate tornado somehow drops him into 1965, he has to figure out how to get back home without altering the timeline too much. Along the way, he runs into Dennis Miller and Christopher Walken reprising their roles from ...

Newswire: The wheel of ka turns once more, finds a new director for The Dark Tower

by Alex McCown
Alecbugg

They make him look so badass here. Shame he lost a hand, and told a whole book story about being 10 years old, and can't even gunsling anymore.

The adaptation of The Dark Tower fled across the desert, and Ron Howard followed. Despite its many starts and stops, the long-gestating project is back on track—for now, anyway—and in addition to a new studio and a new script, the project now has a new director in its sights. Deadline reports Danish director Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) is being offered the job of helming the first installment in a massively ambitious translation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. Hopefully, this news will last long enough to once more get our hopes up, before the whole thing falls apart for the umpteenth time.

Arcel, who also write the screenplay for the original The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, would oversee a rewrite of the script, and shoot the first in what would be a series of films. The initial movie will feature a story adapted from ...

Newswire: Jonah Ray and Mikal Cronin recreated the video for “You Can Call Me Al”

by Marah Eakin
Alecbugg

A hilarious re-creation of my favorite music video of all time. The song's not bad either

A couple of weeks ago, the internet was gifted with a new video from Mikal Cronin. Directed by and starring Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal, the clip was a semi-accurate recreation of Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn,” right down to Schaal’s shaggy little haircut.

Now, there’s a new Mikal Cronin video, and it’s every bit as nostalgic, and creative. Directed by and starring Jonah Ray, the clip is a witty recreation of the beloved video for Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al,” right down to the exaggerated hand movements. Ray plays Chevy Chase to Mikal Cronin’s Simon—at least until some other comedians get involved and things get a little bloody. It’s a fun clip, especially for fans of both the original video and Cronin.

MCIII is out now on Merge.

See Jason Segel as David Foster Wallace in Bittersweet 'The End of the Tour' Trailer

by Gina Carbone
Alecbugg

Looks great

Without context, the trailer for "The End of the Tour" kind of looks like an odd couple road trip comedy. Like "Almost Famous" for the book tour set, with Rolling Stone writer David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) on tour with author David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel).

The movie is based on Lipsky's book, "Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip With David Foster Wallace." It's based on a true story and follows the Davids during their five-day interview as they bonded, competed, and talked about the big picture of life while promoting Wallace's 1996 novel "Infinite Jest."

Here's the trailer:

The elephant in the room, not addressed in the trailer, is the fact that Wallace committed suicide in 2008. The Rolling Stone article was never actually published, but Lipsky's book was published in 2010, after Wallace's death. The David Foster Wallace estate released a statement saying they did not endorse the movie and Wallace would never have approved using the transcripts from that interview for this project. So there's some real-life tension that you won't see on screen.

Studio A24 is promoting "The End of the Tour" with the tagline "Imagine the greatest conversation you've ever had," trying to honor the man, the author, the spirit, and the message he left behind.

"The End of the Tour" will be released on July 31.

Coming Distractions: Stephen Colbert and Jim Carrey are the latest Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee

by William Hughes
Alecbugg

Yay!

....I still have like 4 to watch from last season...

Jerry Seinfeld’s ongoing effort to distill human existence into the only three things he actually likescoffee, classic cars, and a relentless stream of witty asides with funny peopleis continuing for another year, with Crackle releasing a trailer for the upcoming sixth season of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. This year, Seinfeld is chatting and sipping with some of the biggest names in comedy, including his old co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jim Carrey, and a heavily bearded Stephen Colbert, sounding enormously relieved to be taking a break from having to “shovel words into a lens.”

Unsurprisingly, there’s nothing new about the show’s formula this seasonpeople drive, people drink, people quipbut it’ll be interesting to see how Seinfeld’s permanently detached energy interacts with the boisterousness of a Steve Harvey, for example, or Carrey’s never-controlled glee. Also, it’ll be worth watching to see ...

'Game of Thrones-esque' digital boardgame Armello is heading to PS4 in September

by Megan Farokhmanesh
Alecbugg

Hmmmm

Fantasy-driven digital boardgame Armello will launch on PlayStation 4 in September, League of Geeks founder and director Trent Kusters announced today via the PlayStation Blog.

"After our successful Kickstarter campaign and a solid stint on Early Access, Armello's community has helped us hone the game into the unique, polished and deeply thoughtful experience it is today," Kusters wrote. "However, we've also been secretly working away on a PlayStation version of Armello that uses every inch of the console, with brand new high end assets, redesigned UI and controls specifically designed to ensure feels right at home on PS4."

Armello "thrusts players into a Game of Thrones-esque struggle for power" in strategic, boardgame-stye gameplay....

First 'Point Break' Remake Trailer Pulls a 'Fast & Furious'

by Phil Pirrello
Alecbugg

Soooooo....this is happening

I groaned 3 times during the trailer. Can you beat that?!

If Michael Bay, "The Fast & the Furious," and XTreme Sports had a baby, it would be the trailer for the "Point Break" remake.

Our first look at the film -- from director Ericson Core, the cinematographer for the first "Fast and Furious" movie -- takes a page from that franchise's playbook in terms of delivering a crime thriller with crazy, adrenaline-fueled action scenes. Unlike the "Fast & Furious" films, this remake seems to have a very serious tone as FBI Agent Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) struggles to take down a team of Xtreme athletes-turned-crooks lead by Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez). In between shots of the bad guys literally skydiving through piles of money and jumping off cliffs without parachutes, the trailer drops uh-maz-ing bits of dialog -- like this one from Agent Utah:

"I believe that, like me, the people behind these robberies are extreme athletes... Using their skills to disrupt the international financial markets."

There is life before, and life after, that line.

"Point Break," which also stars Teresa Palmer, hits theaters Christmas Day.

This Mario Kart: Fury Road remix is bananas

by Michael McWhertor
Alecbugg

B-A-N-A-N-A-S! THIS SHIT IS BANANAS!

The Mad Max: Fury Road parodies are starting to come in fast and furious, but they're going to have a hard time outclassing this Mad Max/Mario Kart mash-up, which squeezes in just the right amount of smart, sometimes subtle Mario references.

From War Boys with Bob-ombs to sand-hungry Bullet Bills, it's a little scary how well Mario Kart reimagined as a post-nuclear wasteland race to the death works out.

For viewers who haven't seen Mad Max: Fury Road yet, don't worry; this is just a remix of one of the already-released trailers and won't spoil much beyond a few explosive set pieces.

Destiny players: Never turn your back on a 'dead' Warlock

by Ben Kuchera

Warlock 4 Lyfe

So, a bit of background before you enjoy this video.

"We received a message from the enemy saying 'we are on 8/9 wins for trials of osiris please let us win,'" the video's description states. "So this is what we did..."

The three-person Trials of Osiris team pretended to throw the match, and of course the other team didn't expect the Warlocks to self-revive and take them out with the quickness of a sudden middle finger. As trolls go this is pretty light, but it's still an amusing watch.

In other Warlock news, this is why you make sure you're clear before the tea-bag.

You never know when your target has a self-revive waiting for you, even if they look dead. Always be careful around Warlocks, my friends. Always.

Colin Gibson (Production Designer): You bet your sweet… George — unfortunately — doesn’t like things that don’t work. I have in the past built him props that I thought were just supposed to be props, and then he goes, “Okay, plug it in now.”

The first version of the guitar which — I think I put too much into the flame thrower, not enough into the reverb. And yes, the flame throwing guitar did have to operate, did have to play, the PA system did have to work and the drummers… Unfortunately, I did get practice in all positions and I’ve got to tell you, the drumming was very uncomfortable at 70 [kilometers] an hour, eating sand.

[…]  George actually had the guitarist come over, fairly early on in pre-production in Africa. And so he had a month or six weeks of getting used to it, of actually being able to play at full speed, while bungee jumping and blind.

Newswire: Netflix releases first images from its Wet Hot American Summer prequel

by Katie Rife
Alecbugg

They look exactly the same! This is gonna work!

Netflix has released its first batch of cast photos from its Wet Hot American Summer prequel series, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp, which, as the title implies, takes place on the first day at Camp Firewood ’81. As expected, the photos feature lots of funny people, some of whom are big movie and TV stars, having fun in outfits sourced from the ironic ’80s wear section of the local Salvation Army. Many of the new cast members, like Mad Men’s John Slattery and Jon Hamm, aren‘t featured in the initial batch of photos, but we already know they make it to the end of camp in one piece, so it’s fine. (Unless they’re lepers.)

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp will deliver 10 episodes’ worth of quotable lines on July 17—a date that it can’t change, presumably because it ...

The New 'Batkid Begins' Trailer Is Super (and Super Emotional)

by Katie Roberts
Alecbugg

It's just raining on my face...

The heartwarming story of a young leukemia survivor getting his wish to be Batman for a day is coming to the big screen, and a new trailer for "Batkid Begins" takes a closer look at the planning of the event, as well as the intense, passionate reaction that it elicited across the globe.

The documentary focuses on Miles Scott, a then-5-year-old who had just finished treatment for leukemia in the fall of 2013. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Miles requested to become Batman, a challenge that was met with some creative brainstorming, ultimately culminating in the city of San Francisco transforming into Gotham for a day and Miles saving a damsel in distress and fighting off villains, surrounding by thousands of cheering onlookers.

It was a feel-good story that resonated with millions, quickly going viral the world over, and eliciting responses from President Barack Obama and Batman actors including Adam West and Ben Affleck, among many others. And while the trailer reveals that there were some bumps in the road -- how do you install a carseat in a Batmobile replica? -- it ultimately aims to explain how and why acts of kindness can unite the globe.

"Batkid Begins" itself came together in a similar fashion to Miles's wish, with filmmakers raising money through an Indiegogo campaign to finish the flick. It's now set to make its debut in theaters backed by Warner Bros., the very company behind the blockbuster "Batman" flicks. If that isn't super, we don't know what is.

Check out the trailer -- and a poster -- below, and prepare to get emotional. Spoiler alert: this story has a (very) happy ending.

Batkid Begins
"Batkid Begins" is due for a limited release on June 26.

Yes, Coffee Naps Really Work. Here's Why. — Smart Coffee for Regular Joes

by Anna Brones
Alecbugg

This is right up my alley

I, like many children, hated naps. I remember being put to bed after lunch, only to lie in bed and listen for the calming sound of my mother pouring coffee beans into the grinder, this the holy moment of her day when she was child-free and had a moment to herself. I was so attuned to the sound of those beans falling into the grinder that one time, when she poured some M&Ms into a glass bowl, I apparently shouted from my bedroom, "What are you eating?"

I was a precocious (obnoxious?) little thing. But all to say, that naps really weren't my thing. I always felt that time could have been better put to use.
