ha ha, imagine some oceanographer loser at the national environment research council having to board the s.s. boaty mcboatface! imagine her having to tell all her associates that that’s the name of the boat

imagine the ship taking on water in rough seas, and the captain knows he’s made a mistake, and he has to radio for help — “mayday, s.o.s., this is s.s. boaty mcboatface, need immediate assistance” — lololol

ah man. the thing where you take a word, and you put a Y on the end, and then “mc[word]face” or “mc[word]ington” on there like a last name. brilliant

Newswire: Banning kids under 6 from R-rated movies is becoming a trend

by Katie Rife

Today in “I can’t believe this wasn’t already a thing,” The Hollywood Reporter has a story about a “quiet” new movement among movie-theater owners: Banning children under the age of six from attending R-rated movies after 6 PM. Like several other exhibition trends (the theater is famous for its full menu and strict “no cell phones” policy), this one was pioneered by the Texas-based Alamo Drafthouse chain, whose founder, Tim League, tells THR that he picked the age of six by “determin[ing] at what age a kid can behave themselves and not blurt out the first thing in their heads.”

Now several other theater chains, including AMC and Cinemark, are quietly adopting the policy as well. Regal Entertainment, America’s largest theater chain, is going one step further and banning children under the age of six from attending R-rated films at all. Technically, this is in violation ...

Announcing “Ordinary Women” Crowdfunding Campaign

by Anita

Feminist Frequency is proud to announce a crowdfunding campaign for Ordinary Women: Daring to Defy History, a new video series that spotlights the incredible true stories of women in history. This series is something that we’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

Visit our campaign page for more information!

Rather than heroes, leaders and innovators, women are too often depicted—and treated—as secondary characters in history, objects of affections, damsels to be rescued, or merely the wives, mothers and assistants to the men who achieved important things. But a closer look back at history can tell a different story, one full of defiant, daring women who challenged stereotypes and refused to settle for the status quo.

bts-clothing

Narrated by Feminist Frequency founder Anita Sarkeesian, Ordinary Women will tell the stories of exceptional women from history: Murasaki Shikibu, the inventor of the modern novel; Ada Lovelace, the writer of the first computer program, Ching Shih, a pirate captain; Emma Goldman, a political revolutionary; and Ida B. Wells, a civil rights leader and journalist. Each episode will features an original score and original animation, with a distinct visual style inspired by its subject.

ada-emma

Their accomplishments are a reminder that the stories we tell about women too often reflect the limitations that have been placed upon them, rather the things they can do–and have already done. We hope that our project can help shift perceptions of what girls and women can do, not just in exceptional cases but in perfectly ordinary ones.

USA Today’s Embattled Crossword Puzzle Editor Is Stepping Back, For Now

by Oliver Roeder

The longtime editor of two major crossword puzzle series is temporarily stepping away from his editorial role, the puzzles’ publishers announced Monday, three days after FiveThirtyEight published an investigation into accusations of plagiarism against him.

The subject of the investigation, Timothy Parker, edits both the USA Today Crossword and the syndicated Universal Crossword. The copyright for both puzzles is owned by Universal Uclick (formerly the Universal Press Syndicate). According to an analysis of a newly completed database, 65 puzzles edited by Parker perfectly replicated themes and theme answers that were originally published in New York Times puzzles, with some using the same clues and grids. Hundreds more USA Today and Universal puzzles, edited by Parker, were re-published in those same two outlets with extremely minor changes and often under fake author names.

Since FiveThirtyEight published its initial article, USA Today and Universal Uclick have issued statements in response, and it appears that Parker is, for now, no longer in charge of either puzzle.

On Monday afternoon, Universal Uclick said the following:

Timothy Parker has edited thousands of puzzles for Universal over many years, and we have high regard for his work. So we are naturally very concerned by the recent story by FiveThirtyEight.com that puzzles he edited contained many similarities to puzzles edited by others.

We are taking the allegations very seriously, and will explore them thoroughly and quickly. Until then, Tim has agreed to temporarily step back from any editorial role for both USA Today and Universal Crosswords. In the meantime, we are well prepared to immediately provide our customers crossword puzzles from a different source. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this situation may have caused our clients and their readers.

Earlier Monday, USA Today published the following editor’s note:

USA TODAY is investigating claims made by FiveThirtyEight.com that crossword puzzles provided by Universal Uclick and edited by Timothy Parker were plagiarized from parts of puzzles that appeared in The New York Times. As we investigate, we will publish crosswords edited by other contributors.

The paper’s print-edition crossword on Monday listed no editor byline but did carry a Universal Uclick copyright credit. USA Today’s online puzzle on Monday, however, still listed Parker as the editor. An email to USA Today asking who edited today’s print puzzle was not immediately returned.

Pretty Good, episode 6: The Dumbest Boy Alive

by Jon Bois
adamcz

click through for actual video

In 2008, there was an argument on a message board. It was closed two days later. Since then, it has been viewed more than three million times. It is perhaps the dumbest argument in the history of the Internet.

Above is the sixth episode of Pretty Good. Pretty Good is a documentary series about stories that are pretty good. It is written, produced, edited, and narrated by Jon Bois.

This episode is about a Bodybuilding.com message board from 2008. You can see it here. It was unearthed on Reddit in 2015. By the way, a quick note: you may notice that throughout the course of the thread, certain posters seem to have multiple screen names (for example, early on in the thread, "TheJosh" is displayed as "m1ndless"). I'm not sure why this is, but it's probably because of computer internet computer database computer things.

Last month on Pretty Good: A story about the New Orleans Saints, and the sort of bad luck that only comes around every 15 centuries or so.

Newswire: Comedy Central’s Review to end with an abbreviated third season

by Sam Barsanti
adamcz

Not looking forward to Daly's talents being wasted on a broadcast sitcom. broken_heart

It looks like Forrest MacNeil’s endlessly miserable quest to “review life” will soon be coming to an end, as The Hollywood Reporter says that Comedy Central and Andy Daly have come to the “joint decision” to end Review after an abbreviated third season. THR suggests that the reason for this is that Daly has been “fielding comedy pilot offers from the broadcast networks,” but he wants to give MacNeil and Review a proper sendoff. As for the season being “abbreviated,” Comedy Central hasn’t officially decided how many episodes it’ll get, but it’s currently looking at “a minimum of three installments” that will either air once a week, three nights in a row, or lumped together as a “movie-type event.”

Now, this news might be disappointing for Review fans, but at least we’ll finally get to see whether or not Forrest MacNeil’s mission really ends ...

A 14-Year-Old Just Solved A Rubik’s Cube In Under Five Seconds

by Oliver Roeder
adamcz

Watch the video not for the solving of the cube, but for the nerds' reaction afterward.
(says the guy who was solving a cube 2 minutes before reading this article)

roeder-rubikcube-1-highres

Fourteen-year-old Lucas Etter is now the Roger Bannister of the Rubik’s cube. On Saturday, Etter became the first person to solve a Rubik’s cube in less than five seconds under sanctioned competitive conditions. That’s the kind of breakthrough that Bannister made in 1954 when he became the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes. Etter’s time was 4.90 seconds, 0.35 seconds better than the record-holder going into Saturday’s competition, Collin Burns.14 The chart above shows the progression of the official world record, according to the World Cube Association.

In these competitions, the colorful cubes are randomly scrambled according to a computer program, and a solver has 15 seconds to inspect a cube before racing to spin it back to its organized state. The first official record — 22.95 seconds — was set at the first world championship, held in 1982 in Hungary, home country of the cube’s inventor, Erno Rubik. But speed cubing went into hibernation for two decades, until the next world championship was held in 2003. From there, the record has fallen precipitously, thanks to innovations like the Fridrich method, the Petrus system and even “cube lube.”

If you’re curious what it looks like to solve a Rubik’s cube in less than five seconds, here’s video of Etter’s feat, which occurred at a tournament in Clarksville, Maryland.
