President Obama Gets To Watch "Game Of Thrones" Early Because He's The President
Philip.paulssonHahah awesome.
Damn it feels good to be the president.

Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP
Perks of being president: Controlling the world's most powerful army, having Air Force One at your disposal — and getting to find out if Jon Snow is dead or alive before the rest of us.
That's right, Obama has requested — and has received — advance screeners of Game Of Thrones, according to the show's creators.
At Sunday's Hollywood premiere of the show's sixth season, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss revealed the president is a huge, demanding fan of the show.
"When the commander-in-chief says 'I want to see advanced episodes,' what are you going to do?" Benioff said.
"It was a very strange moment," said Weiss. "He's the leader of the free world."

HBO / Via catebrecht.tumblr.com
Not even television critics are getting advance screeners of this latest season, such are the concerns over piracy and spoilers.
But Obama's pretty obsessed with the show, telling GQ last year he most identified with Tyrion, but admitted he found it hard to remember all the characters' names.
"I remember the characters, so when I watch it, I know exactly what's going on," he said. "But if you read a review of the show afterwards and they're mentioning such and such, the only one I remember is Jon Snow, because I can pronounce Jon Snow."
If you're not the president, then Game of Thrones returns on April 24 on HBO. If you are the president, then please drop us hints in all your upcoming press conferences.

Review: Hardcore Henry is the crazy cyborg beatdown movie you always wanted
Philip.paulssonI did not expect this movie to get a good review. Also.... voiceless? That's very FPS video game style. Interesting.

Do not mess with anyone whose knuckles are literally made of metal. (credit: Hardcore Henry)
If you need an antidote for the overblown blah of Batman v Superman, your medicine has arrived in the form of Hardcore Henry, a surprisingly great sci-fi shoot-em-up that moves at the pace of a first-person shooter on speed—and crack, and some LSD for good measure. It’s the comic-violent tale of deadly cyborgs, dope-smoking clones, and a telekinetic gangster-corporate oligarch in Russia. And it has a great soundtrack, too.
Shot entirely from the perspective of Henry with head-mounted GoPro cameras, the movie begins with a familiar cyborg premise. We watch through Henry’s eyes as he boots up, looks down in confusion at the newly installed power ports in his chest, then watches as an engineer screws on his new bionic arm and leg. The engineer tells Henry that she’s his wife, and she hopes one day he’ll remember how much they loved each other. But there’s no time for lovey-dovey, nor to install Henry’s voice box, because the lab is immediately attacked by bad guys. As they run for their lives, Henry discovers that the lab is actually in a zeppelin, and he and the engineer barely have time to launch themselves in the sole remaining escape pod.
In the middle of all this, we realize that the engineer—who jokes that Henry “never liked” her work—has done kind of a half-assed job covering Henry’s bionic arm with skin. She’s left his knuckles bare, so that four gleaming metal joints show through. Of course, these perma-brass knuckles will come in handy, because Henry is going to spend this entire movie wordlessly pounding the crap out of people using every weapon on his body and in his arsenal.
Breakthrough Starshot announces plans to send ship to Alpha Centauri

NEW YORK CITY—The top of the new World Trade Center building was buried inside the clouds, but everyone's focus was on the stars. Yuri Milner, the man whose investments have helped fund the Breakthrough Prizes and Breakthrough Initiatives, was here to announce his newest venture: Breakthrough Starshot, an effort to send hardware to the nearest stars quickly enough for many of us to live to see their arrival.
Present to back the project was physicist Stephen Hawking. "I believe what makes us unique is transcending our limits," Hawking told the audience. "Gravity pins us to the ground, but I just flew to America."
He went on to ask, "How do we transcend these limits? With our minds and our machines. The limit that confronts us now is the great void between us and the stars. But now we can transcend it."
SpaceX shares photos so we can relive the glory of landing a rocket on a boat
Philip.paulssonNice.
SpaceX
SpaceX flew its Falcon 9 rocket into space on Friday and then landed it on a drone ship. Here's what that looked like from on board.

On Friday, the Falcon 9 rocket soared into space and launched its cargo toward the International Space Station. And then for the first time in history, the rocket fired its engines to slow its horizontal velocity and make a guided descent back toward an ocean-based platform where it landed—without toppling over.
After the autonomous drone ship made its return to Port Canaveral early on Tuesday morning, SpaceX collected images from the on-board cameras and released them. They show the dramatic landing up close and in your face.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk said this rocket and its nine engines will be tested 10 times to ensure that everything functions properly. And if that's the case, this rocket could be launched into space as early as June. Luxembourg-based satellite company SES has already indicated that it would be willing to fly on a reused rocket.

Iran executed at least 977 people last year, Amnesty found – a 31% rise on 2014. The report said the vast majority were for drug-related offences. At least four of those killed were under 18 at the time they committed the crime, according to Amnesty, which pointed out that Iran is one of the last countries to continue executing children, in violation of international law.
Two notable cases are those of Himan Uraminejad (aged 21) and Saman Naseem (aged 22), both of whom are facing execution despite being convicted of crimes that took place when they were aged 17.
Uraminejad was sentenced to death in 2012 after being convicted of murder over the fatal stabbing of a boy during a fight. Naseem was sentenced to death in 2013 after being convicted of “enmity against God” and “spreading corruption on Earth”. He was involved in a Kurdish armed opposition group that was apparently involved in armed activities against Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

The country is believed to have the largest number of death row inmates in the world, with 27 crimes carrying the death penalty.
One of the most recent cases to grab international attention has been that of Abdul Basit, a paraplegic who is on death row for murder.
Elsewhere, Chad had not executed anyone for more than a decade, but in 2015 it resumed executions and 10 people were put to death. However, four countries – the Republic of Congo, Fiji, Madagascar, and Suriname – abolished the death penalty last year.

In a statement, Amnesty International’s secretary general, Salil Shetty, said: “The rise in executions last year is profoundly disturbing. Not for the last 25 years have so many people been put to death by states around the world. Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have all put people to death at unprecedented levels, often after grossly unfair trials. This slaughter must end.”

Much of this pressure has centered on Ali al-Nimr, Dawood Hussein al-Marhoon, and Abdullah Hasan al-Zaher, who are all facing execution for offences allegedly committed when they were under the age of 18.
According to Amnesty, the kingdom executed at least 158 people last year – a 76% increase on 2014 and the highest number recorded there since 1995. The charity said most were beheaded, but firing squads were also used and the executed bodies were sometimes displayed in public.
Maya Foa, director of the death penalty team at the charity Reprieve, said: “The sharp rise in executions in countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Egypt over the past year is extremely troubling. It is all the more disturbing, therefore, to see what the foreign affairs select committee this week described as an ‘apparent deprioritisation’ of human rights by the UK government.”
She added: “Now more than ever, Britain needs to be speaking out against the grave abuses – including mass trials, torture, and death sentences handed down to juveniles and political protesters – being committed by its allies.”

Department Of Transportation Introduces Padded Bumper Lane For Intoxicated Drivers
Philip.paulssonNice.
WASHINGTON—In an effort to reduce motor vehicle injuries and fatalities stemming from drunk driving, officials at the Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the opening of new highway lanes lined with padded bumpers, which have been installed on interstates nationwide for use by intoxicated drivers. “It’s really quite simple—if you’re already behind the wheel and you feel like you’ve had too much to drink, simply veer into the special lane at the first entry point and careen safely from bumper to bumper until you reach your exit,” said department secretary Anthony Foxx, noting that the bumpers were specially constructed to cushion the impact of a swerving vehicle and gently push it back toward the center of the lane. “You can also use your car to lightly nudge other intoxicated motorists out of your way and into the padded barriers, or even doze off for a little ...

Overwatch has its sights set on e-sports, but it’s too much fun for that
Philip.paulssonLooking forward to this game.
A few months ago, Blizzard launched a closed beta for its upcoming shooter Overwatch—and I've been engrossed in the PC version ever since. For all its faults—and there are many faults—it's hard not be impressed with not just how much fun Overwatch is, but how Blizzard's managed to successfully combine a solid first-person shooter along the same lines as Team Fortress 2 with the mechanics of a modern MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) like its own Heroes of the Storm and Riot's League of Legends.
That Blizzard's managed to create a compelling online experience comes as little surprise. This is, after all, the same studio that kept millions upon millions of players hooked to World of Warcraft for over a decade, and created Hearthstone, one of the most popular online collectible card games. With Overwatch, it has its sights set not just on creating the most popular online shooter, but one that can take on MOBAs on their home turf: the e-sports arena.
It's been hard to picture Overwatch as a crowd-pleasing, e-sports giant as I've sat alone in my bedroom moaning about what a bully Bastion (a transforming battle robot character) is to others over a clip-on voice mic. But now, sat with a team playing a huge multiplayer game at an event in London's Soho, and struggling against an unfair number of turrets from the opposition, Blizzard's e-sports vision is a little clearer.
A New Mom Who Rejected A Vaccine Is Speaking Out About Her Baby's Whooping Cough "Nightmare"
Philip.paulssonFinally, someone with some sense! Instead of coming up with conspiracy theories, they realize they were wrong and speak out to try and warn others about the danger!
“If I could turn the clock back, I’d definitely take 10 of those vaccinations.”
A woman is warning other parents after her rejection of a vaccine led to her infant daughter contracting whooping cough.

Gold Coast Health / Via Facebook: GCHealth
Cormit Avital, a first-time mother in Australia, discussed her baby daughter Eva's ordeal in a video for Gold Coast Health, her local health authority.
Avital said she had been offered the vaccine for pertussis, or whooping cough, in her 28th week of pregnancy, but turned it down.
"Being the healthy, fit, organic woman I said, 'Leave me alone, I don't need this crap,'" Avital said she thought at the time.
At first, Avital said the illness seemed like a simple cold. However, it soon became terrifying.
Eva's cough became something out of a "horror movie," and her baby turned blue and floppy, Avital said.
"For a moment there, you think they're dead in your hands," she said. "[It's] a lot of suffering for a tiny little cute thing you love so much."
Eva has since spent a month in intensive care, but is improving, Gold Coast Health Staff Specialist Dr. Paul Van Buynder told the BBC.

This School Has A Bench For Kids To Sit On When They Don't Have Anyone To Play With
Philip.paulssonOh Canada.
“Somebody will come find you and they’ll include you in their game.”
When you're a kid, finding someone to play with can be hard. That's why the Willowgrove School in Saskatoon, Canada, just installed a new bench in their playground called the "buddy bench." Kids can sit on the bench when they'd like to be invited to play.
When 7-year-old student, Matthew Henkelman, was asked by CBCNews if he had used the buddy-bench before, he said he had. He said only took about "a minute" for other kids to ask him to join them on the playground.

The kids at Willowgrove seem to love the buddy bench, as it provides them with a subtle way to let other kids know they need a friend.

Once again, Canadians got this whole "friendly" thing down.

How would you feel if a robot asked you to touch its buttocks?
Philip.paulssonLOL

The researchers told study participants that they were taking part in an anatomy lesson. As each body part was named, they were asked to touch it on the robot's body. Meanwhile, researchers measured their levels of physiological arousal. (credit: Jamy Li)
Humans didn't evolve in an environment full of machines, and as a result we have a lot of instinctive reactions to robots that mirror our reactions to other humans. Studies have shown that people have a hard time being rude to a robot's face, just as we do with other people. We even use the same part of our brains to recognize robot and human faces. A research group at Stanford recently wondered if our instinctive reactions to robots would extend to the way we touch their bodies. And they did a series of tests in which subjects were asked to touch robots in "accessible" regions like the hands and then "inaccessible" ones like the buttocks and genitals.
The researchers will present the results of their work this week at the Annual Conference of the International Communication Association in Fukuoka, Japan. They wanted to focus on people's reactions to touch because there is already a large body of evidence showing that humans have complex reactions to touching each other, ranging from emotions to physiological changes we aren't always aware of. As robots take on the roles of caretakers, workplace helpers, and service workers, it's important to explore whether touch should be incorporated into how we design robot interfaces. But first, we need to understand whether humans react to robot touch the way they react to human touch.
To answer that question, the researchers used a human touching scale developed back in the 1960s by Sidney Jourard. Jourard used the term "body accessibility" to rank body parts based on how willing people were to allow others to touch them. As the researchers wrote:

Man Prowling At Airport Gate Ready To Pounce Like Jungle Cat At First Sign Of Boarding
SAN FRANCISCO—Slinking stealthily as he scanned the departure desk for any sudden movement, local man Aaron Smith reportedly prowled San Francisco International Airport’s gate 33 Friday like a jungle cat ready to pounce at the first sign of a boarding announcement. Smith, whose pupils had fully dilated after witnessing the gate agent lean in toward her microphone, is said to have frozen in place, tightening the grip on his carry-on bag and tensing his entire body as if he were a jaguar ready to lunge at a marsh deer drinking from an Amazonian water hole. According to onlookers, Smith tracked the elderly travelers and passengers with disabilities during the pre-boarding process like an apex feline predator eyeing the weakest member of a herd to isolate and ambush, his gaze fixed and intense as attendants guided the group’s wheelchairs down the jet bridge. At press time, after the ...
Astronaut Prime: Here’s how Jeff Bezos plans to remake spaceflight
Philip.paulssonI think I like Musk's approach better because it means more space faster, but it's also a lot riskier I think, so it's good to know that if he fails, we've got Bezos in the background going slow and steady.

The New Shepard rocket made its third flight on Saturday from West Texas. (credit: Blue Origin)
After Blue Origin completed the third flight of its New Shepard launch system on Saturday, the spaceflight community applauded the effort. And on Sunday, after video emerged showing the dramatic firing of its engines just before the rocket would have struck the ground, the response was again approbation. This third test in a little more than four months demonstrated that Blue Origin has continued to progress toward its goal of launch, land, and repeat—the holy grail of low-cost spaceflight.
But among the cheers were also a few mutterings. What does it matter if all Jeff Bezos is going to do is take rich people on joy rides, some said. Or, if researchers want to do suborbital experiments, can't they get those done in conventional aircraft flying parabolas? Others have complained that New Shepard's propulsion module is relatively small and has only a single engine, and flying to suborbital space requires a fraction of the energy that getting into orbit does. In short, some critics say Bezos is just dabbling at the edges of space, not doing the hard stuff of going all the way.
This may all be true, but it misses the point. Much like Mercury represented America's first tentative steps into outer space, so does New Shepard represent only a beginning for the company. New Shepard, after all, is named after Alan Shepard, the first American in space who rode inside a Mercury capsule. It may or may not succeed, but Blue Origin aspires to be much more. It's trying to build a scalable, reusable architecture from the ground up, and that takes time.
