An Artful Sky over Lofoten Islands
Philip.paulssonWoah
An Artful Sky over Lofoten Islands
Can the night sky be both art and science?
If so, perhaps the
featured image is an example.
The digital panorama was composed of 10 landscape
and 10 sky images all taken on the same night, from the same location,
and with the same camera.
Iconic features in the image have been artfully brightened,
and the ground nearby was
artfully illuminated.
Visible in the foreground is the
creative photographer
anchoring an amazing view from the rugged
Lofoten Islands of
Norway,
two months ago, by holding a lamp.
Far in the distance are three prominent arches: our
Milky Way Galaxy on the left, while a
scientifically-unusual double-arced
aurora
is documented on the right.
A meteor is highlighted between them.
Other notable skylights include, left to right, the
Andromeda Galaxy, the
planet Jupiter, the
star Vega, and the stars that compose the
Big Dipper
asterism.
Mystery Asterisk Destination

NASCAR driver stuns racing world with a move learned from Nintendo GameCube
Philip.paulssonThis is amazing... worth the click thru to watch the video!

On Sunday, NASCAR driver Ross Chastain made history with an unprecedented wall-riding maneuver that qualified him for a championship race and set the record for the fastest lap on the track at 18.845 seconds. Remarkably, Chastain said he learned the move playing NASCAR 2005 on the Nintendo GameCube when he was a kid.
The maneuver happened at the Xfinity 500 race hosted at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia. Martinsville is a half-mile short track built in 1947 that is well known for its tight, shallow-banked turns that usually require heavy braking to negotiate.
During the final lap of the race, Chastain found himself in 10th place but needed to pick up two positions to earn enough points to qualify for the Championship race on November 6. Instead of slowing down on the turn, Chastain shifted into fifth gear and gunned it, riding the outside wall and passing five cars to finish the race in fith place.
Return to Monkey Island's first gameplay trailer is a swashbuckling trip of nostalgia
Philip.paulssonHoo boy, did I love these games when I was younger! Will have to check this one out!
When Return to Monkey Island arrives later this year, players will finally discover the secret of Monkey Island. That’s the pitch series creator Ron Gilbert made in the game’s newest trailer, which premiered today during Nintendo’s latest Direct showcase. “My name is Guybrush Threepwood, and this is a story about the time I finally found the secret of Monkey Island,” voice actor Dominic Armato declares at the start of the clip.
As you might imagine, the trailer is full of allusions to past Monkey Island games, including some of the series’ best gags. At one point, Guybrush drifts to the floor of the Caribbean, a sign pointing to Monkey Island and noting it’s only a six-minute walk away. Good thing our hero can hold his breath for 10 minutes.
Many fan-favorite characters also make an appearance in the clip. Among others, I spotted used ship salesman and garish dresser Stan S. Stanman locked in the brig of LeChuck’s ship. Coincidently, you can chat to Stan on Return to Monkey Island’s updated website where he explains he’s in jail for “marketing-related crimes” that may have involved selling non-fungible items.
If you missed the news in April, Return to Monkey Island marks the, well, return of Ron Gilbert to the series he created back in the late ‘80s. Gilbert wrote and directed The Secret of Monkey Island, and went to work on the second game before leaving LucasArts in 1992. Fellow Monkey Island veteran Dave Grossman is also working on the new game, which will take place after the first two games. On consoles, Return to Monkey Island will arrive first on Nintendo Switch.
Dumbass Kid Bringing Mitt To MLB Game Must Think He’s Actually Going To Play

ANAHEIM—Earning looks of incredulity and pity from fans at his breathtaking stupidity, a dumbass kid bringing a mitt to a Major League Baseball game reportedly must think he’s actually going to play. “Yeah, they’re definitely going to glance into the upper deck and sign this 60-pound kid to come man shortstop because…
People are getting explosive gastroenteritis at the Grand Canyon
Philip.paulssonLOLOL the writing in this article...

The Grand Canyon is an immense, vibrantly painted geological wonder, treasured for its awe-inspiring stratified architecture, which has been spectacularly sculpted over millions of years. Up close, it will blow your mind and take your breath away—and if you've visited recently, it may also violently flush your colon and have you projectile vomiting your granola bars.
That's right—the majestic natural wonder has been the site of a months-long outbreak of gastrointestinal illness, likely caused by norovirus. The virus was confirmed to be the cause of illnesses among at least eight rafting trips. Overall, more than 150 river rafters and backcountry campers have fallen ill since April, according to a recent update from the Grand Canyon National Park Service.
While many may have sought the outdoor grandeur in hopes of avoiding the pandemic coronavirus, it seems they were instead met with a different germ that has been savagely hollowing out innards at a pace many orders of magnitude faster than the Colorado River gutted the southwestern section of the Colorado Plateau. Amid the smoothly carved buttes and intricately chiseled chasms serenely shaped over eons, park-goers are blowing chunks from both ends in hot seconds. And instead of reaching both the North and South Rims during their visits, some are forced to remain perched on the edge of a far smaller basin.

Milky Way Galaxy Doomed: Collision with Andromeda Pending
Philip.paulssonSo cool.
Milky Way Galaxy Doomed: Collision with Andromeda Pending
Will our Milky Way Galaxy collide one day with its larger neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy?
Most likely, yes.
Careful plotting of slight displacements of M31's stars
relative to background galaxies on recent
Hubble Space Telescope images indicate that the center of M31 could be on a direct
collision course with the center of our home
galaxy.
Still, the errors in sideways velocity appear sufficiently large to admit a
good chance that the central parts of the two galaxies will miss, slightly, but will become
close enough for their outer halos to become gravitationally
entangled.
Once that happens, the two galaxies will become bound,
dance around, and
eventually merge to
become one large
elliptical galaxy --
over the next few billion years.
Pictured here is a combination of images depicting
the sky of a world (Earth?) in the distant future when the outer parts of each galaxy
begin to collide.
The exact future of our Milky Way and the entire surrounding
Local Group of Galaxies
is likely to remain an active
topic of research for years to come.
Porsche and Audi are both going to enter Formula 1 in 2026
Philip.paulssonCan't wait for that season of Drive to Survive!

Rumors that Volkswagen Group is poised to enter Formula 1 have circulated for years. Every few months, often in a European car magazine, we'll read about an unnamed VW Group board member who says it's happening, then it all goes quiet for a few more months. But now it's really for real, says VW Group CEO Herbert Diess, as the 2026 rule change offers the perfect opportunity.
For a while, VW Group moving to F1 barely even made sense. The two high-technology, high-engineering brands in the group—Porsche and Audi—were both already spending F1-sized budgets to compete against each other in sportscar racing. That's a far more road-relevant form of motorsport, and one where both companies proved new technology that's now commonplace in their road cars.
But then Dieselgate happened, and Audi's diesel-powered hybrid Le Mans conquerer had to go. A year later, Porsche's even faster hybrid program was shuttered, having won everything there was to win. Across the group, brands scaled back their motorsports programs, focusing on electric ones like Formula E and VW's Pikes Peak champion.
The Bagworm Caterpillar’s DIY Mobile Log Cabin
Philip.paulssonSo cool!
The bagworm caterpillar is quite the animal architect. In preparation for its transformation into a moth, the caterpillar builds itself a house that it carries around on its back out of materials it finds in its habitat, like sticks or leaves. When it enters the pupa stage, the caterpillar fastens the house to something solid and hunkers down inside.

I couldn’t source the top photo but the bottom two were taken by John Horstman, who has a bunch of incredible photos of bagworm caterpillar houses on Flickr. Nicky Bay has also taken many photos of bagworm caterpillar architecture.

Researchers may have ID’ed first deer-to-human SARS-CoV-2 transmission
Philip.paulssonOh fucking great.
(credit: .imelda / Flickr)
One of the more disturbing aspects of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is its ability to readily hop between a variety of species, ranging from domesticated animals like cats and mink to wild deer. This creates a potential risk. While spreading in other animals, the virus can pick up mutations that make it look unfamiliar to the human immune system or evolve to cause a different collection of symptoms.
These risks, however, depend on the virus being able to move back to humans after evolving in a different host. And, so far, the only cases where that's known to have happened all involve people who have worked on mink farms. But a recent manuscript that is currently awaiting peer review indicates that Canadian health authorities have identified an instance in which a SARS-CoV-2 variant circulating in deer ended up back in a human patient.
Deer season
In response to findings in the US, where SARS-CoV-2 appears to be widespread in both wild and farmed deer populations, Canadian health authorities decided to initiate screening of their own deer population. During the last two months of 2021, which overlapped with deer hunting season, samples were collected from nearly 300 deer killed by hunters; the unfortunate beasts were all screened for the presence of SARS-CoV-2.
