Morning scenes by early risers

by Arnold Chao
danipretto

i love mornings. well. not all of them.

At the break of dawn, many of you are already up and busy shooting landscapes bathed in dramatic sunlight. There’s a staggering abundance of exceptional pictures from a “morning landscape” image search, and we can only highlight a portion of the ones we appreciate, including a few captions from the photographers:

Dockey Wood Morning Light
Damian_WardDockey Wood Morning Light

“I’m lucky enough to live about 30 minutes away from Dockey Wood, which is well regarded as on of the finest bluebell woods in England. As part of the Ashridge Estate, it is owned and managed by the National Trust and offers clean and uncomplicated woodland views full of bluebells.” – Damian Ward

“A classic spot at Lake Constance. The Turmhof castle in Steckborn, Thurgau, Switzerland” – Philipp Häfeli

Folly

“This morning I finally managed to get back out there and experience the odd euphoria of having made it to the top of a hill at 5am as the sun rises, knowing that a world of more sensible people are still asleep. Bit of a mixed bag of conditions today so I didn’t quite get what I wanted, although this little burst of early light through the mist was kind of spectacular for a few minutes.”

“Squint and you can just make out Firle Tower amidst the furthest clump of trees, a squat little castle turret folly that was built as a gamekeepers watchtower in the 1800s. I think its now a house.” – Finn Hopson

“After I took the long way from Buttermere to Crummock which involved scrabbling up the hillside to escape a herd of cows and calves who were unimpressed with my presence (cows can be scary), I finally emerged by Crummock Water as the morning light began to catch, revealing the ridges and rolls of the landscape, almost flowing down the hillside.” – Vemsteroo

DIY: Make Your Own Bath Mat with Recycled Wine Corks!

by Diane Pham

that doesn't look very comfy to stand on

If you’re a connoisseur of fine wines, then you know that while the bottle can be recycled, the cork often finds its final resting place in the trash can. To make better use of these tiny stoppers, Danny Seo from the craft blog Daily Danny came up with an awesome DIY idea to keep them out of landfills: upcycling the wine corks into a comfy, absorbent, and eco-friendly bath mat.

Northern White-faced Owl Assists Illustrator Using Tablet

by Christopher Jobson
danipretto

i want an owl!

Apropos of nothing, here’s a quick video of a Japanese illustrator who goes by the name Satsuma, working with a Northern white-faced owl perched on his hand. The clip is humourous in and of itself, but it’s especially fascinating to see the stabilization of the bird’s head and eyes while he works. Strangely mesmerizing. (via Tastefully Offensive)

uh oh

The good news is that according to the latest IPCC report, if we enact aggressive emissions limits now, we could hold the warming to 2°C. That's only HALF an ice age unit, which is probably no big deal.

Illinois Becomes First State to Ban Plastic Microbeads in Cosmetics

by Beverley Mitchell
danipretto

i get it but i also love my microbeads

Illinois passed a bill last Sunday that makes it the first state in the U.S. to ban plastic microbeads in soaps and cosmetics. From the end of 2018 it will be illegal to manufacture products containing microbeads in the state, and from the end of 2019 it will be illegal to sell them as well. With other legislatures such as New York and California considering similar bans, it is hoped Sunday’s bill will set a precedent.

If you lack a green thumb but aren’t willing to settle for fake plants, you’ll love the zero maintenance Pikaplant Jar. Modeled after natural water systems, this tabletop plant consists of a specially selected blooming plant hermetically sealed inside a glass jar. The self-sustaining biotope recycles water and nutrients from the humid air so that the owner never needs to worry about watering the plant. Inspired by nature’s ability to make people healthier, happier, and more creative, the Pikaplant was designed with the aim of making gardening more accessible to everyone.

waste, recycling, biofuels, edmonton, enerkem

Edmonton, Canada just celebrated the opening of the world’s first waste-to-biofuel facility, which could radically transform the way we deal with our garbage. The Edmonton Waste-to-Biofuels and Chemicals Facility officially opened its doors last week and it’s expected to keep up to 90 percent of the city’s waste out of landfills. The main biofuel produced at the plant will be methanol, which can be used as a gasoline additive and to make products like windshield washer fluid.

As if itching and burning weren’t enough of a reason to keep the bug spray close, a new disease carried by mosquitos has been identified in the United States – and it’s a real doozy. The chikungunya virus manifests with high fever and intense pain that can last years – and there is no treatment. So far only 28 people in the U.S have been afflicted with the disease, but some researchers believe that it is likely to start spreading.

When most people board a plane they’re usually leaving home. But not if you’re Bruce Campbell, an innovative engineer who rejected the standards of traditional housing and decided to engage his flight of fancy. He purchased a retired Boeing 727, complete with wings and landing gear, for about $220,000 and situated it in a suburban wooded area outside Portland, Oregon. After many years of work the plane is now a makeshift home with electricity, a shower and kitchen. It’s like a young boy’s dream come true!

Want your own airplane home? “You need to acquire two things: An airliner, and suitable land to host it.” Well, it may not be quite that simple but Campbell has a how-to guide on his webpage to shed light on the process. According to the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA) there will be 500 – 600 aircrafts retired annually over the next two decades. That’s 10,000 – 12,000 potentially new aircraft homes coming on the market. Better start making plans now! (via Bored Panda and Huffington Post)

While the government is trying to prevent sea level rise from washing away the northeastern seaboard, a team of designers have launched an imaginative new concept that’ll make sure a sandy beach is always within reach for New Yorkers. Developed by Blayne Ross and a team of designers, City Beach NYC is an artificial floating beach that is meant to dock anywhere along the Hudson River. Still in its initial conceptual phase, the City Beach NYC team plans to launch their Kickstarter next week and, if successful, aims for an opening date as early as 2016.

Caution Wet Floor Cones That Look Like Banana Peels

caution-wet-floor-banana-cones.jpg Note: Official website for Bananaproducts HERE. These are a couple caution wet floor cones that look like banana peels. Pretty cute right? I bet if I sat on one naked I could slide down to at least the start of the text. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of banana peels? "Mario Kart." Haha -- YEP. It's one of those shared experiences that makes us all human. Unless Mario Kart isn't the first thing you thought of, in which case congratulations, you're a cyborg and your adoptive parents have been lying to you this whole time. Your real parents were made by Sony. Thanks to whoever sent this whose email I couldn't find again because it didn't include the words banana, wet floor, or cone. That was your bad and I hope you learned a lesson.

Coca-Cola wants to bring the world icy-cold beverages without the use of electricity or batteries with their new Bio Cooler. The little can dispenser takes advantage of ancient technology that uses evaporation and mirrors to cool things down. Best of all, the technology works better the hotter it gets. Coke brought its cooler to the off-grid town of Aipir, Colombia, where temperatures of 115 degrees are not unheard of – and a frosty drink would no doubt be a nice treat.

San Francisco police recently found a woman living in a small room with 300 rats – and there’s not much they can do about it. The 43-year-old woman known as Erica J., or more colorfully as “Rat Girl,” has been living with a variety of tame and feral rats in a squalid residential hotel room and releasing them in local parks, making contributions to the local rat problem.

Obviously You're Not A Golfer: Insane Bowling Trick Shots

danipretto

@craig! these are ridiculous!

bowling-trick-shots.jpg This is a video of some insane bowling trick shots by Australian pro bowler Jason Belmonte. Jason teamed up with trick basketball shot pros Dude Perfect (of this video fame) to deliver a video that I can only imagine is giving The Dude a monster boner right now. I mean, if he had a TV or computer to actually watch. Instead he's probably just listening to this on his Walkman and confused about the sounds he's hearing. "Yeah, well, you know that's just like, uh, your opinion man." But is it not true? And be honest -- keeping in mind I just chugged six beers. "Not on my rug, man." Just answer the question. Keep going for the video, then meet me at the lanes tonight for cosmic bowling.

The sea star wasting syndrome has reached epidemic proportions and researchers expect that local starfish extinctions are all but guaranteed at this point. The awful disease causes starfish to tear themselves apart, and it has been devastating starfish populations for months now with no signs of slowing. The Oregon coast in particular has seen an explosion in wasting cases, and scientists expect that the purple ochre sea star will likely be wiped out in the near future, which could have a crippling impact on the ocean ecosystem.

AWESOME THING WE ATE #918 | Balls & Bowls At Bowen Island’s “Shika Provisions”

by Scout Magazine
danipretto

@craig - new on bowen. said no one ever. until now.

14322669841_cc19e9dd5c_z

Shika Provisions is a new, tiny take-away restaurant housed in an adorably shingled shack at the edge of the Marina Pier in Snug Cove on Bowen Island. The space was a taco joint until Mitsumi Kawai took it over in mid-May. She quickly drew up a tasty Japanese-influenced menu, applied some clean, modern branding (a Shika is species of wild deer in Japan – and Bowen, as you might be well aware, is practically overrun by wild deer), and threw open the doors for the summer season.

If it looks, tastes, and feels reminiscent of East Hastings’ Basho Cafe, it might be because Mitsumi is the daughter of Miju and Hiroshi Kawai and sister to Moeno Kawai — Basho’s owners. And if her name sounds familiar, it’s probably because she’s part of the Scout team. We’re very proud of what she’s accomplished in a short time. Great style and a love of good food runs in her family!

The Veggie Rice Bowl ($9) is loaded with fresh/roasted vegetables and comes finished with a cilantro pesto or miso tofu gravy (both are delicious). The Taco Bowl sees teriyaki pulled pork over rice with guacamole, sour cream, salsa, and cheese ($10), while the tuna bowl includes a healthy serving of sliced sashimi-grade albacore tuna with truffle vinaigrette and a side of avocado ($12).

Grilled rice balls are exactly what they say they are: grilled balls of rice with cheese, pork, or sesame/seaweed centres. They are fantastic take-away snacks and only $3 a pop. Shika also offers ice cream, cold drinks, and little gluten free, vegan matcha muffins.

Exploring beaches and forests on Bowen is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. There’s no need for a car. If you catch the 11am boat from Horseshoe Bay as a walk-on passenger you will arrive at the Marina Pier just about the same time Shika opens. Fill up on a rice bowl and then hit the nearby trails for a hike before landing back at the dock for the 3:10pm departure. Hours are Thursday-Saturday 11am-8pm, Sunday 11am-6pm, and Monday 11am-6pm.
